SAYING GOODBYE
When I was a child I would get myself in trouble because I hated saying
goodbye. Arent you forgetting to say something? my grandparents would ask as
I was walking out the door. Decades later, goodbyes are not any easier. Perhaps that
is why I defer to common colloquialisms: See ya later. So long. Take it easy. Im
off. Catch ya later. Its been real. Shout if you need me. Call me. Email me. Each
of these conveys a temporary absence, an absence far easier to accept than the
finality of a formal goodbye.
Few people are aware of the etymology of this simple but challenging farewell.
The term goodbye originated as Godbwye a contraction of the phrase God be
with ye. In other words, when departing from friends and loved ones, saying
goodbye implies that when they are no longer in our physical presence, it is our
wish that God be with them.
We are attuned to this goodbye as we read Sefer Bamidbar the Book of
Numbers. This fourth book of the Torah recounts the journey of our ancestors from
Egypt the greatest leave-taking of any nation in history. Certainly our ancestors
did not leave Egypt to take it easy or see ya later, and while it had indeed been
real, it was not the sort of real one would want to repeat. For the departing
Israelites, the Exodus was both a goodbye to hundreds of years of slavery and more
importantly, a hope that God would be them in their journeys ahead. We remember
this latter yearning every week in our celebration of Shabbat a sign between us
and God of Gods presence in our lives. A Jewish goodbye need not be forever;
rather, it can be a moment to share a sign of lasting presence, a desire to remain with
those we love most.
In just a few weeks, Mirza Lopez will retire and conclude her tenure as our
Executive Director. While this moment was inevitable, that does not diminish the
challenge of saying goodbye to a beloved member of our Senior Staff. She has been
a leader at Agudas for the past 14 years, welcoming members, managing our
facility and staff, laughing and crying at moments of joy and sorrow, and making
this community stronger with her care and compassion for every individual. Mirza
has made this community a part of her family and I believe I speak for us all in
saying she is an extension of each of ours. But the time has come to say goodbye
and to give Mirza our sign, the pledge to remember the sacred relationships she has
created. Like the Israelites of old, this goodbye is not forever. We will continue to
see Mirza and Rafael in shul as much-loved members of our community. We wish
Mirza happiness and contentment in her years of retirement. May God be with her.
And may the sparks she kindled at Agudas remain forever as a sign of our friendship.

Co-PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Chaverim,
This month marks the end of our co-presidential term and our transition to
immediate past co-president positions on the board and in service to the community.
In this column we want to thank those who helped us lead the community for the past
two years and share some thoughts about where we are and hope to go.
First, the thank yous. We could not have succeeded without the magnificent support
of the board. Each member made valuable contributions of time and energy to the
numerous regular and special activities over the year. We want to acknowledge the
extra efforts that members of the Executive Committee Ken Labowitz, Meredith
Ludwig, Don Melman, Bob Shapiro, Gwen Stokols, Naffer Miller, Nancy Hailpern,
and Larry Altenburg made in leading their respective committees and providing
guidance to both of us. We also want to recognize Joel Goldhammer for his excellent
leadership development work which will enable us to have informed current and
future lay leaders. Also, Alex Perry has done fantastic work creating our new
website, debuting soon. One more thank you to Bob Myers on his inspired
leadership of the Executive Director search committee. His patience and extra work
paid off and we were able to select the right candidate for our community (welcome,
Barry Nove). Finally, we want to thank Stan Blacker for his steady hand guiding our
endowment funds.
We are grateful for our exceptional clergy and staff Rabbi Rein, Rabbi
Emeritus Moline, Hazzan Dientsfrey, Chaya Silver, and Jen Halpern for their
spiritual leadership, sage counseling and learning, and wonderful education
programs, and of course for Mirza Lopez for her day-to-day management of our
facility. We also want to congratulate Mirza on her long tenure as Executive
Director and look forward to celebrating her on June 25. We are happy that she will
be remaining with us as a valued member of our community.
In addition, the staff that make so many things happen have been incredible
assets over these past years. The office staff Doris Parker, Boulade Rasul, Marya
Runkle, and Wayne Sparrock provide fantastic support, and Lawrence Mawunya-
Yawson (KB) and Elmer Reyes keep our building looking great. Diana and Jack
Weil, along with Cheryl Nelson and Allen Forman have made each event special
with their wonderful food and attention to details, ensuring everything from
preschool snacks to festive events run smoothly.
One additional thank you to Lynne Sandler, an esteemed member of our
community, who has given, and continues to give, so much. Lynne has always been
the first to help with anything this Congregation needs, and we wanted to specifically
thank her for all her contributions.
We unfortunately do not have space to individually recognize all the other
members who contributed their thoughts, time, and money to help us succeed over
the past two years. We do, however, thank you all and believe that your continued
support of the Congregation will allow us to thrive in the coming years.
As we conclude our tenure, wed like to highlight two issues. First, the recently
announced strategic planning process, under the able leadership of Jim Robbins and
Rachel Goldberg, represents an opportunity for everyone to be involved in helping
our community evolve and grow. We thank them and Rabbi Rein for their leadership

Remembering the St. Louis: A Jewish Response to
Todays Refugee Crisis
In early June 1939, the U.S. turned away S.S. St. Louis, a
boat populated by nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees fleeing the
Holocaust. What does this mean for us today? Join Riva
Silverman, Vice President of external affairs at HIAS
(founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), to learn
more about the global refugee crisis and to explore how
Jewish values and history call on us to respond both here
in the U.S., and internationally. HIAS is the worlds
oldest, and only Jewish, global refugee agency.

Please join us for a screening of The Return, the award-
winning documentary about the collateral damage and
impact of long prison sentences. The film chronicles the first
time in national history people voted to shorten prison
sentences. The film has screened in festivals, on Capitol Hill,
in a national community screening tour, and in prisons
across the country.
One of the biggest barriers for individuals post-release is
finding employment. The makers of The Return have teamed
up with The Ford Foundation for an employment screening
tour in order to bring the film to the private sector to
encourage companies to re-think their hiring policies. We
welcome individuals and local business owners to attend the
screening so they can learn about this critical issue and be
part of a tangible solution in helping returning citizens find
employment.
Following the screening, there will be a panel
discussion, featuring:
Bilal Chatman, a subject from the film who served 11 years of
a life sentence. Kari Galloway, Executive Director, Friends of
Guest House. Robert Leggon, Vocational Opportunities,
Training, Education and Employment (VOTEE) Division,
Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA).
Moderated by Josh Kraushaar, Political Editor, National
Journal.

SHALOM,MIRZALOPEZ!
Mirza Lopez, Agudas Achims esteemed
Executive Director, is retiring on June 30. It is very hard to
say goodbye to Mirza, who for the past thirteen years has
treated each of us like a special friend and every challenge
with a smile on her face. Mirza says she has already been
greeted by congregants who hug her and tell her how much
they will miss her in times of crisis and joy. Anyone can be
an administrator, but I feel like I am doing a good job when
I can make a difference in the
lives of our members, says
Mirza.
Mirza and her husband,
Rafael, were born in Puerto Rico
and raised as Catholics. After
being childhood sweethearts,
Mirza and Rafael married in
1972 and began a long-term
search for something they felt
was missing in their lives. They
began reading a lot of Jewish
books, and as soon as they
learned something new they put
it into practice in their home.
Their sons Dax and Caleb, who
now have families of their own, grew up thinking they were
Jewish.
The best gift God gave me was my family, and my
grandfather, who may have been born Jewish, was my
mentor. She traces her ability to study and question to her
grandfather who encouraged everyone in the family to get a
college education. He taught me to ask questions, think for
myself, and pray directly to God, recalls Mirza.
Rafael credits his father for making the familys
transition to Judaism easier. My father was extremely happy
when we converted, and we believe his family may have
been Marranos. These are Jews who converted during the
Inquisition to escape death but practiced Judaism in secret,
adds Rafael.
The entire Lopez family converted twenty-three
years ago with the help of Rabbi Michael Wasserman of Beth
El Congregation in Birmingham, Alabama, where they were
active synagogue members before moving to Northern
Virginia nearly twenty years ago. At Beth El Mirza
volunteered with social services, served as vice president of
the Sisterhood, and participated in a Federation leadership
program. In 1998 she became the synagogues Operations
Manager, similar to our Executive Director, a position she
held for two years.
While in Birmingham, the Lopez family formed a
close friendship with Mike Gettinger, a rabbi, social worker,

and author who served as Executive Director of the Atlanta
Jewish Federation for twenty-five years and a mentor to them.
Before and after we converted we spent every Shabbat and
many holidays with Mike and his family, who became our
family too, says Mirza.
When Mirza became Executive Director, she saw an
opportunity to make positive changes in the synagogue, and a
lot of her improvements can be seen throughout our building.
When I began my job here, the roof was leaking and the floor
in the Lainof Auditorium was in terrible condition, she
recalls. These have been repaired and are now in good
condition. We also have a new sound system, new lines have
been painted in the parking lots, and the library has been
improved and reorganized.
Mirza hired an artist to create an alcove in the lobby
with more space to house the congregations memorial
plaques. The Agudas Achim Cemetery has been refurbished
and is being well kept in honor of our loved ones who are
buried there. Before the maintenance of the grounds was done
by volunteers, but now it is being done professionally on a
regular basis. Of all her synagogue projects, Mirza says that the
pre-school has become her baby. I didnt know we were
having a pre-school when I came here, but I have been working
with six different directors to create the excellent pre-school
we have now, Mirza beams.
Mirza says that the most difficult part of her job has
been the emotional roller coaster she has ridden each day from
news about our congregants. A baby is born, someone is in the
hospital, somebody diesit all affects me. To receive so much
good and bad news every day is one of the hardest parts of my
job, she says. The happiest part of my job is when I receive
news that someone is better. When I find out someone who
was dying is now in remission, it makes me so happy, she adds.
One of Mirzas hopes for the future of our
congregation is to see more work done with fund-raising. It is
the only way to secure our future, says Mirza. She would like
to see the congregation work with the Jewish Federation of
Greater Washington on their Legacy Program which
encourages people to dedicate a portion of their estate to the
synagogue to help it grow. We will have to select a
chairperson and make it happen, she adds.
Faith in G-d has also helped Mirza handle the ups and
downs of being a synagogue administrator. Each day as she
makes the hour-long commute from Manassas to Alexandria,
Mirza prays in her car for the wisdom to help the people she
will encounter that day. She says that her hourly commute has
become a blessing because it allows her quiet time to pray and
think about her day. For me this position is not a job, its a
calling, Mirza says.

WHAT HAS MIRZAS IMPACT BEEN ON AGUDAS ACHIM, OR YOU PERSONALLY, OVER THE PAST 14 YEARS?
Mirza has brought warmth to the position of Executive Director. She has the support and affection of her
administrative and custodial staffs, and interfaces on a daily basis with the professional staff. When it was
necessary, she hired new staff and trained them to be productive.
She negotiated new mortgage payments for us. When Sisterhood gave up the AAC kitchen, Mirza was right
there and filled in until Harriet Moulder was hired. She managed the operation, including the purchase of new
equipment and appliances as necessary. When Harriet moved away, Mirzas plan was to hire someone to fill the
position, but when that didnt work out, she came up with the hiring of staff who were already familiar with the
workings of the kitchen and over the past few years, the kitchen has made money.
Mirza interfaced with the various committees and departments of the congregation to assist them as
necessary in their projects.
Mirza is an observant Jew and is knowledgeable on kashrut and our many religious customs. She oversees
High Holiday tickets and all the details associated with them, and makes sure the Cohen sanctuary, the Flax
chapel, and the lobby are set up properly for those important days.
Mirza is a friend to many of our congregants, as well as an administrator. She attends Shabbat services on a
regular basis and is on friendly terms with all who come. She has been a source of inspiration to me over the
years, and I will miss that but Im so glad she will still be a member of the congregation! Lynne Sandler
