Breaking News Analysis

Section 1:

For this assignment, I chose the article Fever rising: How an illustrators images helped

the fight against Ebola. In brief summarization, this article is about an African man, Leslie

Lumeh, who was sought out by Unicef to spread awareness of the disease with his artwork.

Leslie decided to make his images of the aftermath of the outbreak of this disease instead of

focusing on the devastation it brought to the continent. He wanted to show that even though the

countries are slowly being declared Ebola free, it still has a lasting impact on the citizens of

Africa who had to be so cautious for so long and also for the families who lost many loved ones

to the disease. His artwork portrayed where Liberia was heading in the future which encouraged

others to work towards what he saw for the country.

Section 2:

In class, we spent some time learning about diseases and how they have affected African

countries. HIV and Aids pose a serious threat to the success of Africas citizens. It effected it so

much that as said in the notes, In Botswana, the life expectancy was sixty in 1994. Ebola not

only added to the long list of diseases that already excited there, but it also threatened the lives of

many more spreading at a fast rate.

Section 3:

The issue of Ebola is something that causes a lot of attention and I think this is

very important. Spreading the word is the most important action to take just as artist

Leslie Lumeh did with his artwork. People who could possibly be affected by the

outbreak of diseases need to be informed of the possible devastation that could occur. I

think that more people should take part in spreading awareness of this sort of thing and

instead of just talking about doing something, take action. This was an event that first

took Africans by surprise in 1976 and again more recently. This shows that this is still a

very current issue that most people have stopped worrying about which is very surprising

to me. I thought such a big issue that caused so much attention would cause more people

to take action and help prevent more outbreaks in the future but it seems as though most

have just moved on. This is a big part of why Africa still struggles today because other

countries have given up on the countries within the continent. The article Fever rising

from CNN shows that showing support for Africa is crucial and this is something I

especially agree with.
