when my comedy account is overdrawn

with my routine hay and grain order, I
manage to forget and return for either

enthusiasm, as if we both have just an-

peach again?
A: Greer isnt the only city
applying a fresh coat of paint
to its old water tower (For
those that werent aware, the
downtown Greer water tower
has been redesigned to display
the GreerMade logo).
Nope, now experts have
decided that the Gaffney Peach
isnt a dark enough and could
use a touch up.
Whats the problem with
that?
Well, it was just painted in
2015.
Honestly, Gaffney
should do whatever it
takes to maintain the
integrity of that peach.
According to an interview
with our fellow journalists over
at WYFF 4, The Gaffney Board
of Public Works wasnt pleased
with the color of the peach fol-
lowing the 2015 painting, and
wanted a deeper peach color.
Since then, another artist has
taken over the project, and is
applying a few more coats to
one of South Carolinas most
recognizable landmarks.
Apparently, this repainting is
coming at no extra cost to the
taxpayer.
Honestly, Gaffney should do
whatever it takes to maintain
the integrity of that peach.
If that big, beautiful piece of
fruit needs a little more burnt
orange added to it, it must be
done.
We cant have North Carolina
folks criticizing us for portray-
ing peaches inaccurately!
Hopefully, it wont take as
long this time, however.
Good for you, Gaffney.

Should fatal ODs make
us rethink drug policy?
You dont have to read or watch the news ev-
ery day to know people everywhere are dying
from drug overdoses.
A lot of these fatalities have been attributed
to gray death, a Chinese-made heroin mix cut
with fentanyl and carfentanyl. Fentanyl is used
for human surgery and hospice care. Carfen-
tanyl, meanwhile, is a drug so potent that its
only legitimate purpose is to tranquilize huge
wild animals like elephants and hippos. A lit-
tle speck the size of a grain of salt can kill an
adult. Its supposedly 10,000 times stronger
than morphine.
Police and paramedics carry the medication
Narcan to save overdose victims. But while one
shot of Narcan can typically revive an ODd
heroin patient, it can take over a half dozen
injections to save someone from a Fentanyl or
Carfentanyl OD. A lot of first responders just
dont stock that much.
The epidemic of opioid-induced overdose
deaths is nothing new, of course. The rates have
been going up exponentially since Oxycontin ar-
rived on the scene in the late 1990s. In 2002
there were about 23,000 OD deaths in the US.
In 2015, there were over 50,000.
What we now have is a complicated and iron-
ic addiction crisis that prescription painkillers
started and a government crackdown on them
somehow made worse. Doctors prescribed so
much hydrocodone and oxycodone over the
course of two decades that millions of patients
became addicted, forcing them to find more
pills any way they could. Not surprisingly,
dealers began selling them on the street and a
full-fledged prescription opiod problem began.
Eventually, reform at the state and national lev-
el decreased the amount of painkillers doctors
prescribed, thereby reducing their availability
on the streets. That shrinking supply, com-
bined with the high cost of prescription opiates,
forced many opiate addicts to look elsewhere.
Suddenly, white, well-to-do prescription drug
addicts were forced to look elsewhere for their
fix. They started doing something most swore
theyd never do buying bags of heroin off
the street. Some discovered a little too late that
what they were snorting or shooting was a fatal

the next 25 years, based
on current funding levels.
It is hard for us to
drum up interest in this
topic, as many of the proj-
ects we're looking at have
timeframes of 25 years or
more; however, any proj-
ect that is done with state
and federal transporta-
tion planning funds must
go through this process,
Brockington said.
GPATS and the SCDOT
recently completed the
widening of North Bun-
combe Road in Greer
north of Wade Hampton
up to the Hwy 101 and
Hwy 290 split.
That project was added
to the GPATS Long-Range
Transportation Plan in
2007, Brockington said,
It took eight years to get
to and construct, but had
we not heard from the
public about that project
back when we did that
plan update, it would not
be done today.
Every Metropolitan Plan-
ning Organization (MPO)
is required to have a LRTP
that is reviewed and up-
dated over time. GPATS
reviews the LRTP every
five years and updates it
every ten. This particular
update began with a kick-
off meeting on September
7, 2016, and is currently
ongoing.
The kick-off event was
supplemented with a parts of Greenville, Pick-
series of meetings (i.e.
Sub-Regional Community
Meetings) throughout the
Upstate, where communi-
ty members could provide
input to the visioning and
issues identification phase
of the Horizon 2040.
According to the GPATS
website, respondents in
the region indicated they
would like to see the im-
provement of the con-
dition of existing roads,
highways, interstates,
and bridges in the region
above all else with 63 per-
cent of respondents indi-
cating they would like to
see existing roads repaved
in the region.
The second most im-
portant item is typically
traffic and congestion
management on roads and
highways, the report con-
tinues.
The input we received
last fall and in the surveys
resulted in over 33,000
points of data that are
being used to identify,
refine, and rank projects,
and also determine re-

recommendations, across
all transportation modes,
stressed the need to im-
prove the Safety of the
users.
Each potential road
project is evaluated by
the GPATS Study Team,
comprising local planners,
and engineers, and other
transportation profession-
als in conjunction with the
South Carolina Depart-
ment of Transportation
(SCDOT) and the Federal
Highway Administration
(FHWA).
As high-priority road
projects get closer to con-
struction, they are moved
from the Long Range
Transportation Plan to the
Transportation Improve-
ment Program (TIP), which
schedules funding for
projects to be completed
in the next six years.
When completed, Hori-
zon 2040 will identify
transportation improve-
ments that can be funded
through the year 2040.
The GPATS study area is
approximately 900 square
miles and incorporates

in Upstate South Caroli-
na, containing 16 munic-
ipalities and more than
500,000 people.
With an increase of near-
ly 92,000 people between
2000 and 2014, the Up-
state grew approximate-

to experience more than a
50 percent population in-
crease from 2000 to 2014,
and Greer added the most
people overall, with an
increase of 9,783 or 58
percent. Population den-

Angela Napier Thier-
er, 52, of Taylors, passed
away after a second epi-
sode of sepsis on Wednes-
day May 3, 2017 at St.
Francis Downtown. Angela
was born May 9, 1964 in
Marlboro to Gordon Pond
and Betty Sue (Hicks) Pond
(both deceased).
Angela is survived by
her three children: Holly
Harrison, Acacia Baer and
Amelia Thierer; and by
three grandchildren: At-
ley Harrison, Sarah Harri-
son and Natalya Sanchez.
She leaves behind a sister
Sharlene Pond, and two
brothers: Chris Pond and
Mike Pond, and numerous
relatives and friends.
She was known for her
sense of humor and for
brining life to the party. In
her free time, she enjoyed
painting, cooking, garden-
ing, music and cleaning
with the windows open
and attic fan on. There
was no one that had a spir-
it quite like hers and she
will be early missed by all
who knew her.

ging around frantically.
Police saw him pushing
a reflective vest into the
glove box.
A narcotics dog was
called to the scene and
gave a positive alert to the
vehicle. In the passenger
door panel, officers found
a pistol and magazine,
as well as a baggy with a
rock-like substance in-
side. The officer identified
the drug as a speedball, a
mix of cocaine and heroin.
Gamble was arrested and
taken to Greer City Jail.

Bradley Esuary, 38, of
115 Pennsylvania Ave. in
Greer has been charged
with Malicious Damage.
According to the Greer
Police incident report,
two officers responded to
the above address in ref-
erence to a disturbance.
There, the complainant
stated that Esuary had
blocked the driveway with
his truck, not allowing her
to leave. Then, she says, he
punched her windshield
until it broke. Soon there-
after, the subject arrived
bleeding from his left arm
and hand.
He was issued a citation
for Malicious Damage.
The Taylors Fire Department said no injuries were reported in this two-car collision near
the intersection of Wade Hampton Boulevard and Fairview Road in Taylors. The incident
occured at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Jail without incident. He
blew a .18 percent on the
breathalyzer.

53, of 110 Buncombe St.
in Greer has been charged
with Hit and Run of an Un-
attended Vehicle.
According to the Greer
Police incident report, of-
ficers responded to Trade
St., where a witness had
seen Balcono strike a vehi-
cle and leave the scene.
When police arrived at
his home to question him,
Balzono admitted to hit-
ting the vehicle and then
driving off.
He was arrested and
transported to the Greer
Police Department for
booking and arraignment.

Hampton in regard to a
shoplifting complaint.
Upon their arrival, the
subject was searched and

Inside his pockets, po-
lice found a small straw
and powdered residue.
He was arrested and tak-
en to Greer City Jail.

Christine Edmund Mi-
chelcic, 36, of 227 Clear-
idge Way in Greer has
been charged with Public
Drunkenness and Posses-
sion of Schedule 4 Narcot-
ics.
According to an incident
report filed by Greer Po-
lice, officers arrived at the
Urgent Care on West Wade
Hampton, where a woman
was allegedly staggering
around and requesting a
prescription for Xanax.
Police found Michelcic
there at the office with di-
lated pupils. She admitted
to taking Xanax the pri-

a field sobriety test and
failed. She was found to be

identified as Phentermine
Hydrochloride, a schedule

Michael Ray Chatman,
56, has been charged with
Discharging a Firearm
Within City Limits.
According to an inci-
dent report filed by Greer
Police, dispatch got a call
about a man shooting a
dog with a handgun.
Chatman said he and
his wife were grilling out
when their German Shep-
herd broke his chain and
jumped the fence. His wife
told police that the dog
had become aggressive
and attacked Chatman,
causing a cut on his nose.
She claims Chatman
then went and shot the
dog. The dog was found
dead nearby.
Chatman was arrested
for Animal Cruelty and
Discharging a Weapon
with City Limits. He was
given a breathalyzer at
Greer City Jail and blew a
.17 percent.
Police were seeking a
Sharon L. Gilreath, 48,
of 4267 Sandy Flat Rd. in
Taylors has been charged
with Assault and Battery
and Public Drunkenness.
According to an incident
report filed by Greer Po-
lice, officers responded to
a report of a fight at Sally
Beauty Supply Store.
There, a complainant
said Gilreath had pushed
her several times. Upon
questioning Gilreath,
police noticed she had
slurred speech and was
providing conflicting
statements. She also ad-
mitted to having taken the
medication Phentermine a
few hours prior.
She was placed under ar-
rest on the above charges
and transported to Greer
City Jail.

Warriors eye return to playoffs in 2017

Following a winless sea-
son in 2015, the River-
side football team got a
taste of winning last year,
which our guys were ex-
cited about, said head
coach Phil Smith. When
you start with excitement,
youre already a step
ahead.
The Warriors went 4-6
with a 1-4 record in the re-
gion in 2016, missing out
on the playoffs after being
plagued by injuries late in
the season.
Riverside got back at it
last Friday, competing in
a scrimmage to culminate
spring workout sessions.
Throughout the spring
game, which ultimately
saw the Warrior offense
defeat the defense 42-33,
Smith and his staff were
able to evaluate many of
the players on the roster.
Were a young team,
said Smith. Well have a
lot of starters for the first
time, but we have some
very talented freshman
and sophomores.
Despite the relative lack
of starting experience, the
Warriors do return junior
quarterback Logan Diben-
edetto, who played signif-
icant minutes last season
as well as for the offense
during this years spring
game.

respectively in the minor
league were the GBC Roy-
als and the GBC Pirates.
In the OZONE league, the
GBC Marlins took gold
while the GBC Braves
snagged silver.

and was trying to get
some parenting advice.
This guy has already had
three girls, so he knows
exactly what Im up
against here.
I only have one piece of
advice, he told me.
My ears perked up.
OK, hit me with it, I
said.
Make life as easy as
you can for her right now,
because in a few months,
she is not going to be
happy with you, he said.
He wasnt done.
Rub her feet, do the
laundry, make dinner
whatever you can.
Is my situation really
about to be this dire? Is
the presence of a new-
born in my home going
to make my wife want to
hurt me?
It very well could
I was just researching
and the internet says (the
internet never lies) that
babies cry for a total of
three hours a day when
they are first born! I dont
do anything (except may-
be sleep) for three hours a
day! How could a baby be
capable of such madness?
I already hate to be on
my wifes bad side, and
all this crying is going to
make staying away from
that even harder.
So, Malibu Shannon, if
youre reading this, take
all the IKEA trips you
want. Sleep in, go get a
pedicuredo whatever
it takes to have the best
summer of your life.

lon won the first Monster
Energy NASCAR Cup Se-
ries of his career and put
the vaunted No. 3 Chevro-
let back in Victory Lane for
the first time since 2000.
Working for the first
time in the Monster En-
ergy NASCAR Cup Series
with crew chief Justin Al-
exander, Dillon was one of
eight drivers who stayed
on the track when the
strongest cars in the Sun-
day nights Coca-Cola 600
at Charlotte Motor Speed-
waythe Toyotas of even-
tual runner-up Kyle Busch
and third-place Martin
Truex Jr.came to pit
road on Lap 368 of 400.
Saving fuel for the entire
run, Dillon trailed Jimmie
Johnson, who also stayed
out, until the seven-time
champion ran out of gas
with less than three laps
left. With Busch and Truex
in hot pursuit, Dillon had
just enough fuel to get to
the finish line.
The No. 3 Chevrolet
owned by Dillons grand-
father, Richard Childress,
returned to the winners
circle for the first time
since the late Dale Earn-
hardt won his last race on
Oct. 15, 2000 at Talladega.
After Earnhardts death
in the 2001 Daytona 500,
Childress retired the num-
ber in NASCARs premier
series until Dillon ran his
last laps. My fianc wrote
in the car, When you keep
God in first-place, he will
take you places you never
imagined.
And, I never imagined I
be here at the 600 Victory
Lane. Praise the Lord and
all these guys who work
so hard; and my pit crew is
the best on pit road. I love
it for them. Were in the
playoffs. Its awesome.
Dillon, who led only the
final two laps, had to re-
strain himself from using
too much fuel in pursuit
of Johnson.
I was just trying to be
patient with the No. 48,
Dillon said. I could see
him saving. I thought Id
saved enough early, where
I could attack at the end,
but I tried to wait as long
as possible. And when he
ran out, I figured Id go
back in and save where I
was lifting, and it worked
out.
I ran out at the line, and
it gurgled all around just
to do one little spin and
push it back to Victory
Lane.
Matt Kenseth ran fourth,
followed by Joe Gibbs rac-
ing teammate Denny Ham-
lin, as Toyotas claimed po-
sitions two through five.
The fireworks started
early at the 1.5-mile track,
more than six hours be-
fore the race ended. On
Lap 20, five laps before
a scheduled competition
caution, a large piece of
debris shot from the back
of Jeffrey Earnhardts
smoking No. 33 car into
the path of Chase Elliotts
No. 24 Chevrolet.
The debris knocked a
hole in the nose of Elliotts
car, and flames erupted
had hit a patch of ice, and
piled into the back of El-
liotts car, destroying both
machines.
Somebody broke, and
there was just oil every-
where, and I couldnt
turn, Keselowski said. I
ran into the back of Chase.
Somebody broke in front
of him, and then he ran
over what they broke and
then he broke, so there
were two cars broke in
front of me and just oil ev-
erywhere.
You couldnt stop and
turn. You couldnt do any-
thing. Its a real bummer
for our team. We had a
really fast Miller Lite Ford,
and I think we had a shot
at winning tonight, but
thats how it goes.
Elliott was equally dis-
appointed that his car was
on a wrecker in the garage.
The No. 33 broke some-
thing ahead of me and I
ended up hitting it, Elliott
said. I hit it pretty hard. I
knew it had hurt our nose
at least, then I saw some
flames and figured we
were laying down oil too,
I guess.
Brad couldnt get
stopped and ended up
kind of finishing us off,
but it was a bummer. I
hate it. I dont really know
what you do about stuff
like that. Just move on.
After the subsequent
restart on Lap 28, the rest
of the first 100-lap stage
ran caution-free, with Kyle
Busch passing Truex on
Lap 90 and pulling away
to secure the playoff point
accorded the stage winner.
Truex was leading when
the caution flag flew for
the third time on Lap 142
after Matt DiBenedettos

I wasnt even running
hard up there. I just got
loose and then I hit it and
it ruined our day. Im hop-
ing to hold onto the point
lead and then go to Dover
next week and try to do
better.

by five points over Larson,
with Keselowski 82 points
back in third-place.)
After Larsons accident,
Truex lost three spots on
pit road on Lap 294, ced-
ing the stage win to Denny
Hamlin.
But Truex, who led a

Basketball Camp from July
17-20.
The camp, which will
be held from 8:30 a.m.- 5
p.m. daily, was designed
to spark interest in the
program from young play-

leave a legacy is the day
your legacy begins. It has
to do with humility and
letting your actions speak
louder than words.
Its unlikely that there
ever will be a Mt. Rush-
more for defensive
tackles. Nor is there a
good chance that people
someday will think about
the guy who forced six
fumbles over the course
of a decade-long football
career. They will, how-
ever, remember a guy
named Cortez Kennedy
when they think about
what a football player is
supposed to be on and off
the field.
Tez was the kind
of player you couldnt
ignore. A Hall of Famer
who spent all 11 years of
his career with the Seattle
Seahawks during their
raucous 90s ... a graduate
of The U. A guy uni-
versally revered by those
who played with him and
those who coached him.
It was sad to learn of
his death at age 48. At the
time of this writing, there
was no official cause. The
morning of his death, it
was kind of striking and
weird to actually read
official Twitter accounts
that didnt make you
cringe in embarrassment
for a change.

Culvers employee surprised by proposal at work

Katlyn Miller and Pat-
rick Middleton will soon
share more than just em-
ployment at Culvers in
Greertheyll also share a
last name.
Middleton decided to
propose to his girlfriend,
Miller, a manager at the
restaurant, in a unique
way last month
My initial reaction
was, for real?
Katlyn Miller
Toward the end of one
of Millers shifts, Middle-
ton went into the back of-
fice to talk to the general
manager, saying he had to
fill out one more piece of
paperwork for the board-
ing process to work at
Culvers.
I didnt think anything marriage with a side of
of it, Miller said.
Then, the general man-
ager came up front, telling
Miller and another man-
ager to come outside with
her so she could show
them what to monitor
during the summer; such
as trashcans emptied, the
patio area cleaned and the
electronic sign checked
for spelling errors.
While they were looking
at the sign, the message
read, Question of the
Day.
Next, the sign flashed,
Katlyn, will you marry
me?
At that moment, Middle-
ton came from the drive-th-
ru side of the building in a
Culvers apron carrying a
value basket with the ring
inside.

115 now has a newly char-
tered American Legion
Auxiliary Unit.
Last Wednesday, Brenda
Holland, president of the
American Legion Auxilia-
ry, Department of South
Carolina, presented offi-
cers of Unit 115with an
official Charter document,
making the move official.
Were a brand new
group, said Secretary Do-
lores Hemming. Theres
ten of us. We had 15 peo-
ple sign up that were inter-
ested in joining at Greer
Family Fest. Were looking
to expand. Were happy to
get going on this. We have
a really good group of la-
dies who are chomping at
the bit to do things.
The mission statement
of the American Legion
Auxiliary is to support
the American Legion and
to honor the sacrifice of
those who serve by en-
hancing the lives of vet-
erans, military and their
families, both home and
abroad.
For God and Country,
we advocate for veterans,
educate our citizens, men-
tor youth, and promote
patriotism, good citizen-
ship, peace and security,
Hemming said.
The original ten inter-
ested women met several
times this year to elect
officers and decide annu-
al dues as well as meeting
days in order to apply for
the charter.
As we were encouraged
that the process was go-
ing forward, our members
joined together to volun-
teer in service within the
Greer community, Hem-
ming said.
For example, several
members baked home-
made desserts, which were
taken to Crestview Ele-
mentary School in Greer in
honor of National Teach-
ers' Appreciation Week.

teachers' break room.

trader named Mr. Lockhart
(Dane DeHaan) is connived
into chasing down a com-
pany CEO whose decision
to reside permanently
at a wellness hospital is
crimping the companys
style. Upon arrival and af-
ter an accident, Lockhart
is deemed a patient, and
thats when things start
to get weird. What can
you say about a film that
is too horrifically beauti-
ful to sustain a storyline?
Director Gore Verbinski
delivers a visual stunner,
with scenes designed to
cinematic perfection, but
the movie cannot hold the
attention so long without
any substance. A Cure
for Wellness comes off as
more of an eldritch reverie
than a plausible tale, and
at two and a half hours,
youll have plenty of down
time to peer through its
gaping plot holes.

Demidovich was born
in Kyrgyzstan July, 1951.
He graduated from college
with a degree in fine art in Palmetto Trail.
1978 and became a mem-
ber of an esteemed profes-
sional organization, The
Art Union of Kyrgystan,
until he immigrated to the
US in 2004. He exhibited
widely in his native coun-
try and found inspiration
in the wide array of cul-
tures he has encountered
in life. His travels and ex-
posure to beautiful vistas
have greatly contributed
to Vladimir's vision of art.
His preferred media are
oils, pastels and charcoal,
which translates his favor-
ite subject, the landscape,
into a mesmerizing, im-
pressionistic almost ex-
pressionistic explosion of
color.
The Artists Guild Gallery

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY
Everyone who shares a
love for hiking and bicy-
cling in South Carolina is
invited to celebrate Na-
tional Trails Day and the
Palmetto Trail, Saturday,
Conservation Foundation
(PCF).
PCF is hosting weekend
celebrations at Croft State
Park in Spartanburg Coun-
ty and Poinsett State Park
in Sumter County. The Pal-
metto Trail passes through

activities are planned in
Charleston County on the
Awendaw Passage of the
history. At present, PCF
Registration is required

Swallowing pills
just got easier
DR. ROACH WRITES: A
while back, I asked read-
ers for suggestions on
swallowing pills, and I got
many helpful answers.
I particularly liked this
pharmacists advice, since
it combines physics and
common sense:
Because capsules
FLOAT and tablets SINK,
two ways are helpful. For
capsules this works for
me: Place the capsule on
your tongue, then take
a big swallow of water
through a straw, keep-
ing your chin neutral. For
tablets, put water in your
mouth first, then tilt your
head back and drop the
tablet into your mouth
and swallow.
Using a straw was the
most frequent advice I
heard. Thicker liquids
were the key for other
readers, while one remind-
ed me that an inexpensive
pill crusher can turn a
pill to powder, which can
then be mixed into yogurt
or applesauce. However,
always check with your
pharmacist, since some
pills, such as long-acting
formulations, should not
be crushed, and a few
should not be mixed with
foods. Another person
found that swallowing
some ice chips for a few
minutes prevented the gag
reflex that kept her from
swallowing medicines.

es in diet, medication and
fluid intake, based on the
stone type, medications
taken, diseases or condi-
tions present and other
factors. There are services
available on the Internet
that will perform labora-
tory testing without an
order (by having a medical
director in a given state
order the lab), but I dont
recommend it for the rea-
sons above.

celiac disease should have
a blood test to look at thy-
roid levels. Celiac disease,
or intolerance of gluten
in general, may have few
or subtle symptoms, and
it might be worthwhile to
consider testing for celiac
disease in people with au-
toimmune thyroid disease.
However, I would not rec-
ommend a drastic change
in diet for people with thy-
roid disease if there are no
symptoms.

participate in an annual
Career Day.
Third through fifth
graders at Tigerville Ele-
mentary School located
in Taylors got out of class
last Friday to hear about
different jobs.
We feel it is an excellent
way for students to learn
more about the world of
work through firsthand
accounts, said Abby
Rucker, School Counselor.

what a typical day looks
like, what education is re-
