Zheutlin, Peter. Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope
Highway. Naperville: Source, Inc, 2016. Print.

Summarize: Peter Zheutlin is on a road trip with Greg Mahle. Greg rescues dog from kill shelters in the
south and brings them to adoption centers in the north. Peter focused on how many of the dogs they rescue
could be temperamental and shy when it comes to being around humans. Most of the dogs end up being
adopted by loving families. Greg compared his work to how slavery was in the 1860s. Once slaves were up
in the north they would be free for the rest of their lives. Greg and others all work day and night for weeks at
a time to work on getting the dogs from the south to the north with the help of other non-profit organizations.

Assess: the book ended up being a big part in my project. Shelters were not the only thing I wanted to focus
on so most of my other research was a vague idea about animal abuse. After finishing the book, I realized
that shelters should be my main focus because shelters do not seem like a place where dogs can be
abused. I learned about kill shelters and that many dogs will be euthanized every day.

Reflect: this was my most helpful source because I narrowed my research topic after reading the book. It
made me realize that shelters abused animals more than I thought. It shocked me how the euthanization
rates in the southern part of America are higher than the northern part. All the stories told in the book really
changed my mind and how I would want others to know about kill shelters and how they take away the
chance of dogs getting a new home taken away.

Newnam, Jared. "Animal Cruelty and Neglect Exposed." Animal Cruelty and Neglect Exposed . South
University , n.d. Web. 9 May 2017.

Summarize: Newnam explains how there are not enough animal abuse laws in the country. There is only
one federal law in place for animal abuse. Each state will also have their own animal abuse laws. Since
animal abuse is not clarified in our constitution, each state is allowed to have their own laws. A person can
be charged with intentional and unintentional abuse where charges will be different depending what the
person did.

Assess: this article explained to me how there are different types of animal abuse like intentional versus
unintentional abuse. I ended up changing the focus of my inquiry topic after reading the article, but it gave
me insight to have animal abuse can vary. Also how each state will have different charges because there is
only one federal law for abuse. The article would be helpful to anyone researching vaguely what animal
abuse is.

Reflect: after reading this article, I think it is important that states put in more animal abuse laws and they
follow through with it. There should be more federal laws for animal abuse that can make it stop. This would
not be a source for my research topic, but it does give an insight to have animal abuse does not seem to be
a big deal in America.

Greenwood, Arin. "Pit bull rescued from abuse gets showered with love from the police who saved her."
TODAY.com. TODAY, 02 Nov. 2016. Web. 02 May 2017.
Summarize: Greenwoods article was talking about how a pitbull, named Jamie, was rescued from a
basement. She was living in her feces because her owner had abandoned her. After a veterinarian checked
her out, her owner also did not cut the pitbulls toe nails, resulting in them curling and stabbing the paws.
The pitbull was put into an ASPCA recovery program where she will stay until she is adopted. She is given
love from all the workers there.

Assess: the article showed that dogs can become adoptable after being abused. This article also shows
that the stereotypical pitbull breed is not vicious and aggressive as many people see them to be. They are
like any typical dog breed that can have a friendly characteristic. This source, and like many others in my
bibliography were not that helpful because I changed my inquiry topic after reading most of the articles.

Reflect: I feel like the article shows that pitbulls are not aggressive dogs. The stereotype that many dogs
that are huge are dangerous is not true because even little dogs can be aggressive, but there is just less
damage. Any dog has the same chance of getting adopted from a different dog. The ASPCA showers the
pitbull with love every day making it seem like being with humans is not a bad thing. After being abused,
dogs can be more aggressive towards humans because humans were the ones that hurt the dogs.

Schecter, Anna, and Lindsay Perez. "Tyson Foods dumps pig farm after NBC shows company video of
alleged abuse." NBCNews.com. NBCUniversal News Group, 20 Nov. 2013. Web. 25 Apr. 2017.
Summarize: Tyson Foods received a video of a workers on a pig farm abusing them. Tyson Foods received
the video from NBC. The food company said that they are no longer using that pig farm company to get their
food from. The owner of the farm fired the workers in the video. The workers were even abusing piglets.

Assess: this article about food suppliers abusing the animals gave me ideas about how the meat I could be
eating might have been abused. Tyson Foods terminated their contract with the pig farm owner because
they know that animal abuse is not right. The company supplying the pigs took the right action into firing the
employees who were seen in the video abusing pigs and piglets. This article would be helpful for those who
are researching farm animals that are turned into food for humans. This was not that helpful to me because I
ended up researching shelters, but this gave me an insight to how many other places have animal abuse.

Reflect: I think that Tyson Foods did the right thing in terminating their contract with the pig farmer because
animal abuse is not right. The source was not that helpful because I narrowed by topic down to shelters
versus being vague about animal abuse. This gave me insight that even though we end up eating pigs, it is
not right to abuse them when they are alive. It would not be fair if humans were abused like how animals
are. This changed the way I think about animal abuse because there are so many categories inside animal
abuse that others should know about.

Shiloh. Dir. Dale Rosenbloom. Warner Home Video, 2001. DVD.

Summarize: the movie is about a young boy who saw a stray dog on the street. Little did he know, but the
dog actually was not homeless and it had an owner. The boy ended up taking the dog home with the
disapproval of his father. Shiloh, the dogs name, was abused by his owner and that why he runs away
often. The owner of Shiloh ends up giving the dog to the boy because he felt like the dog will be happier.

Assess: even though the movie was fictional, it showed that animal abuse is wrong. The owner of Shiloh
knew that he was abusing the dog and made the right choice in giving it away. The movie had a message
and it was to stop animal abuse because you know it is wrong. Even though the movie was helpful for abuse
in households and family life, I ended up changing and narrowing my topic of animal abuse to shelters.

Reflect: the movie Shiloh is fictional but it shed some light that animal abuse could be happening right by
you. This was not a helpful source because I ended up focusing on animal shelters and the conditions
versus animal abuse that is happening in your house and in personal lives. This has not really changed how
I feel about animal abuse because I was always strongly against any form of animal abuse. This is more
proof that animal abuse happens everywhere but we might not be aware of what is going on.
