1736 to 1770-74),
mother of Pritchett Gouty (July 4, 1766 to May 12, 1837)
Elizabeth Pritchett probably was born about 1750.
Elizabeth Pritchett was the daughter of Phunback Pritchett and his wife, who is
not know with certainty.(JJ)(Will of Phunback Pritchett)
Elizabeth Pritchett married John Goutee (Gootee, Gouty) on November 17, 1769,
in Dorchester County, Maryland.(BB)(Elizabeth, dau. of P. Pritchett of DO Co., m. by
17 Nov 1769, John Goutee (MWB 37:406; MDAD 65:9).)
17 November 1769 Jabus Pritchett testified that the will was that of Phunback
Pritchett, deceased.
17 November 1769 Robert Scott and Robert Scott, Jr. swore to the signature of
Phunback Pritchett before John Goldborough.
Mary Griffith Gouty died January 30, 1817 in Pickaway County, Ohio.
Alexander Griffith died in 1811 in Caroline County, Maryland.
(Note: The Gouty name is spelled with many variations in historical records, i.e.,
Gouty, Gowty, Gowtee, Gootee, Gottee, Goutee, Goutty, etc. In this writing, the name
will be spelled Gouty (similar to how my mother spelled it) except when reference is
made to an historical record, in which case it will be spelled as in the original
document.)
John Gouty is said to have been born about 1738 in Dorchester County,
Maryland, the oldest of four children of Jacob Gootee and Margery Wingate.(1) I have
found nothing yet however to prove Jacob and Margery Gootee were his parents.
Jacob Gootee was born about 1696 in Maryland and died March 9, 1779, in
Maryland.(2) He married Margery Wingate in 1721.(3) Margery Wingate was born
about 1701.(4) Jacob and Margery (Wingate) Gootee were the parents of five children:
John, Shadrack, Capewell, Jabez, and Mary.(5)
There appear to be several men named John Gouty in eastern Maryland during
the mid to late 1700s and it is not easy to distinguish among them. John Gouty, the
father of Pritchett Gouty, died in Caroline County, Maryland, on August 4, 1818.(6) He
left a will which appears in Appendix One after the REFERENCES section of this
paper.(7)
John Gouty married first Elizabeth Pritchett on November 17, 1769 in Dorchester
County, Maryland.(8) Elizabeth Pritchett was born about 1736 and she probably died
about 1775 to 1785. She was the daughter of Phunback Pritchett and his wife, who is not
known with certainty.
Several items at the time of the American Revolution concerning a John Gouty
are of interest. The first is a record of the 1778 Fidelity Oath by a John Goutee in
Choptank Hundred, Caroline County, Maryland, where John Gouty, father of Pritchett
Gouty is believed to have lived.(9) We also note that someone has claimed admission to
the Daughters of the American Revolution under John Gouty, father of Pritchett
Gouty.(10)
Another item is the 1776 census for Dorchester County, Maryland.(11) In my
opinion, this 1776 census doesn't fit with the family members of John Gouty, father of
Pritchett Gouty, at that time.(12) Since the Fidelity Oath signed by a John Goutee in 1778
was done in Caroline County, Maryland, it seems likely the John Gouty of Dorchester
County in 1776 probably was not John Gouty, father of Pritchett Gouty, who we know
was in Caroline County, Maryland.
A Maryland State Archives record concerning a John Goutee dated October 31,
1777, relates to a petition for early trial on charges of providing provisions for the
enemy. The author does not know if this document relates to John Gouty the father of
Pritchett Gouty or some other John Gouty.(13)
U. S. Census records for Caroline County, Maryland, in 1790 and 1800 exist for a
John Gouty (or Goutee).(14) The only two Gouty names, or any spelling of names
somewhat similar to Gouty, that appear in the 1790 Census in Caroline County,
Maryland are Able and John Gouty. In the 1800 US Census for Maryland, the only
Gouty names that appear in Caroline County are: Abel, John, Zachariah, and
Prichard.(15) Prichard Goutee is listed at age 26 through 44 in 1800.(16) If he was born
in 1765 he would have been about 34 or 35 years old in 1800.
In the 1810 US Census for Maryland, the only Gouty names that appear in
Caroline County are: Gabril, Thomas, Zachariah, and a P Gouty which we can assume is
Pritchett Gouty.(17) Thomas is listed as age 16 thru 25. Gabril is listed as age 26 thru 44.
P Gouty is listed as age 26 thru 44. If Pritchett was born in 1765 he should have been 44
or 45 years old, so the age 26 to 44 category might have been correct. Zachariah
apparently is keeping John Gouty in his household since his census record includes one
male age 25 thru 44 and one male 45 or older. Zachariah's census also included two
females age 16 thru 25 and no female above age 25.
The only Gouty family names in Caroline County, Maryland, in the 1820 census
are Abel Gowty, James Gouty and Thomas Gouty. James should be the orphaned son of
Zachariah.(18)
There are a number of Maryland land records that relate to a John Gootee or
Goutee. There appears to be more than one John Gouty related to these land
acquisitions. The author is not certain which of these land records are for John Gouty
the father of Pritchett Gouty.
I do not know if the John Gootee mentioned in this document is the father of
Pritchett Gouty or is a different John Gouty: "The Processioners of 1795: 8th Between [---
--] Creek and Back Creek on the bayside and up Back Creek Branch to the line between
John Gootee & William Miles and along their line to Wallops Road and along said road
to the line of the Parish. William Stran, Charles Bagwell & Woney Rew
Processioners."(19)
It seems reasonable to believe the John Gouty, father of Pritchett Gouty, owned
the following two land tracts since they were in Caroline County, Maryland, in the 1783
tax assessment.(20) The Caroline County assessment indicates that a John Gootee
owned two land tracts, Gootees Lott and Laynes Venture, both in Lower Chaptank
District Hundred.
A John Goutee was a surety in Dorchester County, Maryland, on August 25,
1767, for a John Aaron, deceased.(21) He also was a surety on November 11, 1767, in
Dorchester County, Maryland, for administrator and widow Margaret Staples.(22) A list
of Accounts for a John Gowtee, 1744, 1745, 1756, and 1760, all in Dorchester County,
Maryland, may be for a different John Gowtee than the father of Prichett Gouty.(23)
John Gouty and Elizabeth Pritchett were the parents of at least five children:
Abels second wife was Elizabeth Wheelton (or Whealton), whom he married
December 24, 1813, and with whom he had three more children.(26) One child was:
i. Elizabeth Gootee born February 14, 1818, in Caroline County, Maryland
Abels third wife was Esther Pritchett, born about 1789-90.(27) An Abel Gouty
was a witness to the will of Rebecca Walker of Caroline County, Maryland, written 8
May 1817 and probated 2 July 1817.(28) Abel Gootee died in August 1842 in Caroline
County, Maryland.(29) Abel Gouty made his will on April 3, 1841, and it was recorded
on August 23, 1842, in Caroline County, Maryland.(30)
3) Britannia Gouty was born about 1765. She married Richard Willis on January
22, 1788 in Caroline County, Maryland.(37) Britannia died January 3, 1826 in Caroline
County, Maryland. Richard Willis was born August 8, 1759, in Dorchester County,
Maryland, and died February 14, 1823, in Caroline County, Maryland.(38) He was the
son of Richard Willis and Rebecca Granger. Richard Willis may have been of the
Quaker faith.
Britannia and Richard Willis were the parents of:(39)
i. Rebecca, born Nov 9, 1788
ii. Dorcas, born about 1790-1794
iii. Richard, born Jan 24, 1794
iv. Ann, born June 8, 1799
v. Elizabeth, born about 1800
vi. Senah B., born April 19, 1802
vii. Foster, born December 27, 1805
viii. Zachariah, born December 27, 1805
ix. Peter, born April 21, 1811
4) Pritchett Gouty was born July 4, 1765.(34) He married Mary Griffith about
1800. She was a daughter of Alexander Griffith. She was born about 1765 in Maryland,
and died in Pickaway County, Ohio, on January 30, 1817. In his will, Alexander Griffith
Sr. names his daughter Mary, wife of Pritchett Gouty, as an heir.(35) Pritchett Gouty is
in the 1800 Caroline County, Maryland, census.(36)
Children of Prichard Gouty and Mary Griffith are:
i. Elizabeth, born December 15, 1796. She married Samuel Chezem.
ii. John, born March 31, 1800, in Maryland, and died January 24, 1879, in
Vermilion County, Illinois.
iii. Henry, born about 1801 in Caroline County, Maryland, and died
October 14, 1858, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.
iv. Thomas, born about 1802, in Maryland, and died June 10, 1863, in
Vermillion County, Indiana.
v. Delilah, born about1804. She married Wlliam Cossey.
vi. Zachariah, born about 1815 in Pickaway County, Ohio.
Pritchett Gouty married second Mary Donovan in Pickaway County, Ohio, on
January 13, 1817. Pritchett Gouty and Mary Donovan Gouty are buried in the Old
Baptist Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.(37)
5) Cynthia Gouty probably was born about 1780. She married John Nicols on
January 15, 1799, in Caroline County, Maryland.(38) John Nicols died before October 20,
1815.(39)
"1804 Silas Nicols was born in the year of our Lord 1804, Dec. 29, the son of John
Nicols and Cinthea, his wife. Cynthia was the daughter of John Gouty - (see will
Denton, Caroline County, Maryland."40) "1799 Henry Nicols, b. November 19,
1799"(41).
John Gouty's second marriage was to Jemima Brohawn with whom he had two
children:
6) Violetta (or Vility) Gouty was born about 1780. She married William Stevens
on January 3, 1803, in Caroline County, Maryland.(42) His parents were Azel Stevens
and Rebecca Townsend. He was born February 13, 1777, in Caroline County, Maryland
and he died July 12, 1824 in Caroline County, Maryland.(43)
Children of Violetta Gootee and William Stevens:(44)
i. Rebecca, born about 1804 in Caroline County, Maryland; died in Hamilton
County, Indiana; married Joseph Swiggert December 29, 1823, in Caroline County,
Maryland; he was born about 1793 in Maryland and he died December 12, 1883, in
Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana.
ii. William, born about 1806 William Stevens, born Abt. 1806 in Caroline Co.
Maryland; died Unknown in Henry Co., IN; married (1) Hannah M. Reynolds June 06,
1833 in Henry Co., IN; died Unknown; married (2) Rebecca Truslow December 20, 1843;

v. Violetta, born about 1813
vi. Elhanan, born March 11, 1816
vii. Seney, born about 1819
viii. James A., born about 1821
7) Zachariah Gouty probably was born about 1778. He married first Lucretia Andrew
on December 20, 1797, in Caroline County, Maryland.(45) Zachariah Goutee appears in
the 1800 Caroline County, Maryland, census.(46) Zachariah Gouty and Lucretia
Andrew Gouty were the parents of two children:
i. Mary
ii. James, born February 1807
Zachariah died before November 1812.(49) Zachariah was not named in his
father's will, but his four children were John Gowty's primary heirs, while Zachariah's
six brothers and sisters received one Shilling each. The State of Maryland passed a law
to assist his orphaned children and widow:(50)
Mary Stevens Gouty, the widow of Zachariah Gouty, married second a Daniel
Chaffinch on January 9, 1818, in Caroline County, Maryland.(51) He was born about
1785 and died May 12, 1865, in Concord, Caroline County, Maryland. Mary Stevens is
buried in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery, Concord, Maryland.
