Description:
Welcome to English Language Arts! I am so excited to have you in my class this summer. During this course, we will have fun
learning and exploring expository and literary works of literature, as well as learning how to format and structure a variety of
different forms of writing. Our main goals are to analyze authorial choice and theme complexity; as well as, analyzing
multiple interpretations of literature and composing a research paper and creating a complimentary multi-media
presentation.
I try to always keep the classroom creative and learning oriented with new, up-to-date materials and resources, as well as
fun and interactive learning activities. Students will work individually and within group settings to learn to articulate speech
and hone their listening skills. By the end of this summer, students will be able to closely read and analyze classic and
historical works of literature, as well as defend and craft their own their own unique compositions. Students will learn the joys
and benefits of leisure reading, while exploring classic literature, essays, poetry; as well as, analyzing major literary
movements and how they affect literature and our lives today.
Classroom Goals:
It is my firm belief that every student is capable of success! That is why I hold all my students to the same standards of
behavior and codes of conduct. Students are required to turn work in on time for full-credit, and to arrive on time for class
prepared to learn. Please make sure to follow all class and school rules. Please dont hesitate to come to me with any
questions or concerns.

Important Rules and Procedures:
A. Late Work: Per district policy, students that are absent have two days to turn in missed work for full
credit. Late work, not caused by an absence, is accepted up to five school days before the end
of the semester, with a 10% dock in score. Late work will not be accepted the last week of the
semester, NO EXCEPTIONS.
B. Tardies/Absences: Tardies and absences policies follow the Boise School District rules and
procedures for summer school 2017. See below:
Attendance: Students must attend 90% of the time to receive credit. Only two full-day
absences (8 hours) are allowed in each semester. This policy will be strictly enforced due to the
condensed summer school format. If students have obligations such as camps or family vacations
that would require them to be absent longer than two days, they should not register. If your child is
absent, please call the Summer School office to excuse the absence within 24 hours.
Tardies: Only six tardies per semester in each class are allowed. Students will be dropped from
the class if they are tardy a seventh time. After 20 minutes, a tardy becomes an absence. Students
should synchronize their watches with the West Junior High School clocks and pay close attention to
2-minute warning bells.

C. Cell Phones: There may be times that we will be allowed to engage with our cell phones. This time
will be clearly stated by the teacher. If you do not have direct permission for cell phones use,
please keep them out of sight. I will confiscate and hold on to any cell phones (until the end of the
class day) that create a disruptive learning environment. Multiple offenses receive a phone call
home to parents.
D. Headphones: Again, there may be times that music/headphones are allowed in class. Please
keep them out of sight unless allowed directly by teacher. Any students participating in disruptive
headphone use (your neighbor can hear your music) will be asked to remove their headphones
and will lose future headphone privileges.
E. Free-Time: We will not often have free time. By chance you obtain some, please use it effectively;
Do not disturb other class members.

Student Decorum Points: I do not grade for participation. I know that if you choose to participate, your grade will reflect
it. However, I have ZERO TOLERANCE for behavior that disrupts the learning of others. That is why, every student here is
awarded 100 Student Decorum Points at the beginning of each semester. THE ONLY WAY TO DEDUCT FROM YOUR
STUDENT DECORUM POINTS IS TO DISRUPT THE LEARNING OF OTHERS. Some examples include, but not limited to: engaging
others in inappropriate conversations during learning time, using your cell phone/headphones during unapproved
periods, loud or disruptive behavior, off-topic/silly questions, arriving habitually late to class, lining up/packing up early/
noisily, taunting/bullying other students, etc. You all have a fresh beginning to get 100% on your student decorum! Keep
your A+! Please know that I will not allow disruptive behavior to continue in the classroom. If there is habitual disruption,
