The Korean War

The Korean War is a memorable moment for most countries including

Canada. The Korean War started on June 25, 1950. How the war began was

when North Korea crossed the 38th parallel, the boundary between Europe

and the Mediterranean Sea. North Korean went into South Korea and started

fighting which set off the Korean War. By July American troops entered the

war on South Koreas behalf. For three years a bloody war was fought by the

allies of North Korea, and the allies of South Korea.

The Korean War involved of 16 counties. Twenty six thousand

Canadians were involved in the war and they were there from the beginning

to the end. Another country that was involved was China. The Chinese Civil

War ended with the establishment of the communist Peoples Republic of

China. Then China went to fight for North Korea thinking that this would not

be a big war and that they could finish off South Korea and then go back

home, but it was almost the opposite.

The Korean War was known as The first hot war of the cold war. It

was said that around 3.3 million people died during this bloody war fifty five

thousand of those were American and 2,000 Canadian troops died. The

beginning of the Korean War was just as bad as the ending. People started to

be killed right from the beginning and soldiers died to the very end.

Both the Korean sides had many countries fighting with their allies. The

countries that were allied with North Korea were China and Russia. For the

South, Australia, Canada, the United States and the United Nations fought

along their side during the whole war. Over six million soldiers, sailors and

airmen fought in the Korean War.

Not all of these countries were fighting against each other in Korea at

the same time. The war began with only two hundred thousand North

Koreans fighting one hundred thousand South Koreans. Later on in war the

United Nations came to the aid of South Korea and the Chinese came to help

North Korea. The war was being fought by these armies for a long time. At

this time of the war there were one million soldiers fighting against each

other. As the war progressed countries started to step in and do their part for

the war. Canada, America, and Australia joined to help South Korea and

Russian started to Help North Korea. While allies of the south were the

Soviets allies Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.

For South Korea the United States was one of their biggest allies. America

got involved in the war for three reasons, one of these reasons was called

the Domino theory this was called the Domino theory because China just

became a communist country in 1949 and Truman was afraid Japan would

become one too. The second reason was America wanted to start ending

communism, and the third reason was because Truman realised the United

States was in a competition for world domination with the USSR.

Canada was also involved in the war, Canada did not do as much as

the United States did in the war but Canada helped. Canada sent around fifty

thousand troops and eight destroyers, They were all sent around the same

time and they made a difference in the War.

The countries that fought with Korea mainly did so because they

wanted communism to grow. China and Russia were the champions of

communism and North Korea. They did the most for North Korea and sent

many troops.

During Canadas early days, their reputation was very good and is still

going strong to this day. Canadas reputation was not affected that much

because before Canada was not that involved.

But Canada did help in the war and when people here Korean War they

will think ya Canada was involved in that. When Canada got involved they

were not trying to fire up a big war, they were trying to support the South

Korean with the fight against Communism. Canada did not go to Korea to

make a name for themselves, but after when the war started to die down and

troops went home Canada was known for how they contributed with the

Korean War.
