Pray for yourself
The devotional "Beside Still Waters" offered to us this past
Lent, was and is so inspirational. It has made me reflect
back on my own prayer life. Starting with
the first prayer most of us can recall, "Now I
lay me down to sleep". Well, as a child I
refused to pray that---what child wants to
talk about dying just before they go to bed?
So, I would "make up" my own prayers for
family, friends, neighbors and even my pets.
The longer the prayer, the later the bed-
time!!!
There are many prayers said or sung by rote
and we don't always put a lot of thought to
what we are actually saying. The Lords
Prayer is a good example. "Thy Kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth". . In our
PC world are we really preparing for His
Kingdom and His will? Are we so con-
cerned about offending that we are afraid to
take a stand? Jesus was not concerned about
offending. Then, there is "forgive us our debts, as
we..." We humans seem to find it difficult to forgive and
will still hold a grudge. Thankfully, God does not forgive
like we do!! God knows that forgiving leads to healing.
I think most of us have been in a desperate situation, health

Reach out to all with faith and love.
concerns, personal problems, family problems and our
prayers turn to pleading and begging for a miracle and the
miracle doesn't happen. Grief can be so overwhelming we
are unable to pray. Thankfully, the Bible
tells us that the Holy Spirit pleads for
our needs when we can't.
I love the old hymn "I Come to the Gar-
den Alone" and He walks with me and
He talks with me. What a wonderful
concept, walking and talking with Je-
sus!! We have no problem talking and
walking with our friends. Why not talk
to your BEST FRIEND and SAVIOR,
God wants us to talk to Him.
As we age, our prayer lists get longer. I
have always prayed for forgiveness but
have never really thought of praying for
myself. Now I find it comforting to
know I can and should talk to God about
my own concerns. He really does care
and loves us.
Peace to all - find your quiet place and talk to God. And
don't forget to pray for yourself.

The best Father

Unlike an earthly prince, God didnt take a high-and-mighty title, notes 17th century British
preacher Thomas Watson. Instead, God calls himself Father to encourage us to pray to him
But God isnt just any father. Watson offers these reasons why God is the best Father.

He is the most ancient (Daniel 7:9).

He is perfect (Matthew 5:48).
He is the wisest (Romans 16:27).
He is the most loving (Zephaniah 3:17; I John 4:16).
He has unsearchable riches (Ephesians 3:8).

MISSION PROJECT SUPPORT OUR TROOPS/VETERANS

The warm months have arrived and our Mission Committee is again sponsoring our Summer Project for Veterans. We are
collecting short-sleeved t-shirts and socks through the months of June and July with anticipated delivery to MANA House and
other Veteran facilities by mid-August. During the summer here, living conditions can be extremely hard for many veterans
who are not fortunate enough to be living in a facility but living on the streets. A new clean t-shirt and a pair of socks can make
all the difference to them. Please consider this project when you are out and about at our local stores. They all have t-shirts and
socks.

You may place your donations in one of the two collection boxes, one located in the Narthex on the table and the other one is
located in the Fellowship Center on the left side as you enter, or you may also make a drop-off at the Church office and they
will call me. Also remember that along with these items, magazines, gently used clothing, DVDs, CDs, games and puzzle
books, are collected and delivered continuously throughout the year. Deliveries are made when there are enough items collected
to do so. And speaking of deliveries, two deliveries have been made during the last few weeks and that indeed sets a record.
Thank you again very much for remembering our Veterans and others in need.

David, Geraldine Brooks We see David through the
eyes of those who love him, fear him-from the prophet

Seasons of the Enemies, the Long Walk of the Nava-
jos, Sharon Leslie Gearhart Gearhart is a member of
Desert Palms Church. From her experience as a teacher
on the Navajo reservation, she tells the story of the at-
tacks on the Navajo people by many nations on the
1860s.
A Light in the Wilderness, Jane Kirkpatrick
This is a dramatic story of a freed slave who has lost
her husband and her freedom papers and must find a
way to survive in the wilderness of Oregon Territory.
The Housemaids Daughter, Barbara Mutch
Life in South Africa before, during and after apartheid,
is portrayed through the eyes of a black woman servant
and the white woman who becomes her benefactor as
well as her employer.
Under the Wide Starry Sky, Nancy Horan
The tempestuous love story of Fanny Van de Grift Os-
borne and her husband Robert Louis Stevenson is the
subject of this historical novel. It spans decades and the
globe.
A Man Called Ove, Frederik Backman
Ove is a curmudgeon called by his neighbors the bitter

The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah
A tribute to the extraordinary courage and endurance of
Frenchwomen during World War II. This novel celebrates
the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of

These women worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee developing
the Atomic bomb. They were unaware until after the bombs
were dropped what they had been working on.

Between 1987 and 1989, Alepho, Benjamin, and Benson,

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a cul-

A Man Called Ove
By Fredridk Backman
A number of people had mentioned this book to me and
they were very enthusiastic about it. After reading it I had
the same degree of enthusiasm. It is wonderfully sensitive
and filled with insight.
When first we meet Ove (oo vay) we see a fiftynine year
old man who could well be described as a curmudgeon;
surly, ill-mannered, inflexible, bad-tempered and thor-
oughly cantankerous, but already on page 35, we can be
brought to tears.
He had lost his wife six months before and all of the light
in his life had been distinguished. He no longer lived, but
merely existed.
Our story continues and tells us about his former life. An
only child in a good home, his mother died when he was
eight years old, and his father died when he was sixteen.
He never attended school again; lived alone in the small
house he had shared with his parents and went to work
where his father had worked. His was a solitary life. He
was very quiet and introspective as well as having great
physical strength and very high ethical standards.
His was a black and white world until he met and was
mesmerized by a beautiful and friendly young woman.
The story of their courtship was lovely and touching.
They spent forty years together in a happy marriage
which, very unfortunately began with a terrible tragedy.
None of his wifes friends could ever understand why she
married him, and humble Ove was equally puzzled. How-
ever, a closer look revealed that they were just right for
each other. She was kind, optimistic, outgoing, a voracious
reader and a very successful teacher of difficult children.
He was a very taciturn man, deeply devoted to her, con-
scientious, very hard working, and a builder and master at
fixing anything broken. She loved to talk and laugh and he
loved the sound of her voice. His wifes death left him so
bereft that he became obsessed with the idea of taking his
life so that he might join her. He made an attempt four

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put
in an old age home?" "Well," he said, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to
the person to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the
teacup." "No" he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

times and each time he was stymied, beginning with
the rope breaking. Though this is a tragic subject there
is some dark humor.
One day his quiet and solitary life changed drastically.
There were new neighbors and he was extremely irri-
tated. No more peace and quiet.
It began with the good natured, but very inept hus-
band and father trying to park and smashing Oves
mailbox. His wife was a very energetic, good-hearted
and assertive extrovert. Oves ill-natured behavior did
not faze her a bit! They had two young daughters and
a third child was expected.
It is fun to read how Ove, in spite of himself, got
drawn into doing good deeds and more involvement
with others, including taking in a homeless cat, than
he had ever intended. All he had wanted was to be left
alone!
Now, for those who feel strongly that there should be
less government involvement in peoples lives, this is
indeed the book for you. Ove was fiercely independ-
ent and he engaged in a tireless and lifelong battle
with government officials, (referred to as White
Shirts) because of what he saw as their undeserved
power, hard-heartedness, destructiveness and stupid-
ity. His barrage of letters and telephone calls through
the years made him a legend. There are many inter-
esting characters in this book, including some lovable
misfits.
There are great losses but also large and small tri-
umphs. One cannot remain unmoved. We are given
much to think about and when
we are finished we will feel that
it was time well spent.

Explanation of God

It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula

Vista , CA . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain
God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well? (and he had such an
assignment, in California , and someone published it, I guess miracles do
happen!)

'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the
ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth.
He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and
easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teach-
ing them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.'

'God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this
goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside
bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this.
Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears,
unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.'

'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps
Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your
mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have. Athe-
ists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula
Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.'

'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water
and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching
to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they
were doing and to forgive them and God said OK.' And God did not let Jesus stay in the grave, but raised him from the dead.

'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on
the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things
which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secre-
tary, only more important.'

'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the
time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's
God! Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun
doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.'

'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you,
like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get
thrown into real deep water by big kids.'

'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he
pleases.

And...that's why I believe in God.'

mer style of worship. For so
many years we have enjoyed
a blend of music styles,
hearing music from so many
that just love to play and
sing music that glorifies
God, His Son, and His Com-
forting Spirit in our souls.
The youth will continue
meeting through the sum-

4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Center, and we will have a
small group of Singers, the "Celebration Summer Sing-
ers" blending harmoniously on tunes familiar and com-
fortable, and tunes new to our souls. We must reach into
our hearts and quite possibly, while doing so, some songs
reach all the way to our tapping toes. These are not
my instructions. We must feel joy. We must feel the
Spirit stir. As it is written in Ephesians 5:19,
"speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and
songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your
heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Fa-
ther for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ."
I look forward to seeing those who are absent from us
soon, and, for those who are here, see you Sunday!

There was a young man who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as he was getting his
things 'in order,' he contacted his Priest and had him come to his house to discuss certain aspects of his final wishes. He told him which songs
he wanted sung at the service, what scriptures he would like read, and what outfit he wanted to be buried in.

Everything was in order and the Priest was preparing to leave when the young man suddenly remembered something very important to him.
'There's one more thing,' he said excitedly.. 'What's that?' came the Priest's reply. 'This is very important,' the young man continued. 'I want to
be buried with a fork in my right hand.' The Priest stood looking at the young man, not knowing quite what to say.

That surprises you, doesn't it?' the young man asked. 'Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request,' said the Priest.

The young man explained. 'My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to
those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the
dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.'
It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming .... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something
wonderful, and with substance!' So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder 'What's
with the fork?' Then I want you to tell them: 'Keep your fork .. the best is yet to come.' The Priest's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he
hugged the young man good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see him before his death. But he also knew that the
young man had a better grasp of heaven than he did. He had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice his age, with
twice as much experience and knowledge. He KNEW that something better was coming.

At the funeral people were walking by the young man's casket and they saw the suit he was wearing and the fork placed in his right hand.
Over and over, the Priest heard the question, 'What's with the fork?' And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Priest told the
people of the conversation he had with the young man shortly before he died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to
him. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking
about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.

2. * Click on Sign-In.
3. Enter your email and password, click on sign in.
4. Click on your name (top right hand corner),
under Account Summary scroll down to

number or name of organization then select

An Investment Today for the Life of Our Church Tomorrow

CONTRIBUTING TO THE FOUNDATION

This is the third and final article explaining the operating procedures of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation.

In thinking about creating a gift (funds of bequest) to the Foundation, have you considered what happens to your gift? What are
the procedures for distributing your gift? Here is an overview of what takes place with the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church
Foundation when this situation occurs.

1. Please notify the Church office of the death. The office will notify the Foundation.
2. The Foundation will contact the Administrator/Executor concerning the death.
3. The Document (Will and/or Trust) is read. The question of Probate is answered.
a. The Administrator/Executor informs the Foundation of the results.
b. If the document must go to Probate, the procedure is set aside until it has been resolved. Once that happens,
continue with step 4.
4. Foundation and Administrator/Executor resolve the details of the document.
5. When the document contains directions for the use of the gift, the Foundation notifies the Session and appropriate
Ministerial Unit (s).
6. If the gift is undesignated the Foundation notifies the Session and they determine the usage of the gift. The Session
completes a Foundation Request Form and submits it to the Foundation.
7. After all interested parties have approved the usage, the Foundation will distribute the gift.
8. The Foundation will notify the giving party as to how the gift was distributed and thank them.

The Foundation will be in hiatus from May 20th to September 15th. If you have any questions or want to get in contact with the
Foundation, please call the Church office. They will contact a Trustee who will get back to you.

Member Spotlight . Did you know?
Bonnie Hollabaugh was born in the spring of 76 and grew
up in New Oxford, Pennsylvania, a small town right outside
of Gettysburg. Growing up, she was an absolute Daddys
girl, who learned early in life that being outside and mowing
the lawn was way more interesting than staying inside and
doing the inside chores. During high school, Bonnie was
very active playing sports, being in the marching and con-
cert band, and lots of clubs. It wasnt unusual for her to leave
her home at 7:00 a.m. and not get home until 9:00 or so in the
evening. Bonnie did not grow up in a church, but when she
was about 14, her dad decided it was time to start going to
church again, so the two of them went church shop-
ping and visited a different place each week. Eventu-
ally, they decided that the local Baptist church seemed
like the best fit, so they joined. As per usual, Bonnie
was very involved in the youth group, going to various
church camps and being part of the puppet minis-
try. She was baptized (dunked, really) a month before
her 15th birthday. After graduating from New Oxford
High School, Bonnie chose to go to Bloomsburg Uni-
versity, where she majored in interpreter train-
ing. Bonnie had learned bits and pieces of American
Sign Language before this point, but it was in college
that she truly developed her skills.
When Bonnie was 22 years old, she was ap- Bonnie Hollabaugh
proached by one of the people in the church about
the possibility of coaching one of the local middle school
volleyball teams. Bonnie had played sports all through
school, so it seemed like something that may be interest-
ing. This was where Bonnie really found something to be
passionate about. She ended up coaching one season of vol-
leyball and 12 seasons of middle school girls basket-
ball. She truly loved being with the kids and showing them
how to be responsible young adults. There is one specific
story that sticks with her, and that lives out her motto of
sometimes doing the right thing and following the rules are
two different ideas. During one of the games, Bonnie put
th
one of her 7 graders into the game at the beginning of the
third quarter. Sarah was in the game for a grand total of
seven seconds when she fell and broke her arm. Throughout
the rest of the season, Sarah continued to attend every prac-
tice and every game, even though she was not able to play. It
was not unusual to see her sitting on the bench beside Bon-
nie, keeping stats of the game. The team made the playoffs
that year, but they were going in ranked fairly low, so the
reality was that they were probably not going to win the
game. What Sarah did not know at the time was that Bonnie
had added her name to the roster of players for that
game. Before the game started, she had cleared it with the
referees and the other coach if the game was decided with
thirty seconds or so, Bonnie was going to put Sarah into the
game, even though she was still in a hard case (breaking all
of the safety rules of the game, but being able to reward the
kid who had worked so hard to be there). With 17 seconds

left in the game, the Hanover team was down by al-
most 20 points, and Bonnie called a time-out, much to
the chagrin of everyone in the gymnasium, who just
wanted the game to be over. At that point, she looked
at Sarah and said, Do you want to play? Sarah hesi-
tated, knowing that she was not supposed to play with
the cast on, but then ran out onto the court with a huge
smile on her face.and everyone applauded. Every-
one, that is, except for her parents, who were the one
set of people that Bonnie did not get permission
from. After the game, Sarah came off the court and
could not have been happier. This is a mo-
ment that had stayed with Bonnie throughout
her adult years.
In 2006, Bonnie moved to Arizona, and lived
in Phoenix for approximately 18 months. At
that time, Ron Waldo (tech Elder and
neighbor) was offered a position at Fountain
View Village, so Bonnie moved to Fountain
Hills, where she and Ron continue to be
neighbors. She started at FVV in 2008 and
has worked as a caregiver and in the activi-
ties department. Four years ago, the Human
Resources Manager position opened up,
and Bonnie was given the opportunity to
learn a new role. Her position involves
doing the payroll for almost 200 employees, as well as
everything else that is employee related. Its been a
challenging position for sure, but its taught Bonnie a
lot and it is something that has been an interesting step
in life.
Bonnie is not married nor has any human children, but
there are three animals at home who mean the world to
her. Boo and Bob are the cats (ten- and nine-years old
respectively), and Bella is the 2 year old schnauzer /
terrier mix. They fight like cats and dogs most of the
time, but when it is time to go to bed at night, all three
animals have their designated places on the bed. As
someone who has been an animal lover throughout her
life, there is nothing quite like the love that pets bring
to the table.
As far as the family side of things, Bonnie is the
youngest of eight kids. Because she has a sister who is
almost 18 years older, her oldest nephew was born
when Bonnie was five. She became a great-aunt at the
ripe age of 30, and currently has a total of twelve
nieces / nephews and 8 great-nieces / nephews. Al-
though she lost her dad in 2011 to ALS, Bonnie defi-
nitely takes after him both in looks and personality.
Bonnie is a collector of all things Titanic it has been
a fascination of hers for many, many years. She also
collects Bicentennial items and coins, since it is the
year that she was born.
