Uproar as police kill camels,

torch houses in Tana River
T
he killing of more than 135 camels
over the weekend by government
security forces in Bangal, Tana River
county has prompted anger and condem-
nation from residents and leaders.
According to residents, contingents of po-
lice officers stationed at Ukasi police sta-
tion in Mwingi, Kitui county raided Bisan
Hargeisa village on Friday and touched
more than 41 houses forcing residents to
scamper for safety into the bushes.
The officers drawn from the Kenya Na-
tional Police and Rapid Deployment Unit
(RDU) raided the same area two days later
and this time turned their guns on grazing
camels which were shot at indiscriminately.
The prized animals are considered the main
economic mainstay for the affected people
whose livelihoods are now threatened after
they counted losses worth millions of shil-
lings.
While the Somali livestock herders in Tana
River and the Kamba farmers in the neigh-
bouring Kitui county have for several years
engaged in disputes over grazing land, the
residents of Bisan Hargeisa claim that the
latest incident was politically motivated
and has nothing to do with the recent
boarder disputes.
Speaking to the Friday Bulletin, Abdi
Dubow Ahmed spoke of his pain and an-
guish after losing 17 camels, 4 donkeys
and 38 goats. He noted that the killing
of his livestock and torching of his house
has reduced him to a beggar and a home-

Female winners of Jamia Qur'an competition feted

The sixth annual Jamia Mosque Quran
memorization competition for girls closed
on Sunday with winners in various catego-
ries being awarded for their exemplary per-
formances.
Maryam Abdullahi Ahmed from Zaid Bin Al-
Khattab madrasa emerged the overall win-
ner after she topped the ranks in the cate-
gory of memorizing the whole 30 chapters
of the Quran.
Maryam who was third in the same category
in last years competition took home a cash
prize of Sh 80, 000.
The second position went to Rashida Abdi
Salat of Al Bushra Islamic centre who re-
ceived a cash prize of Sh 70,000.
Samira Hassan Mohammed from Musab
Educational Centre emerged in third posi-
tion and was awarded with a cash prize
of Sh 60,000.
For their performance, Maryam and
Rashidha received an automatic ticket
to participate in the 15th annual East
and Central Africa Quran competition to
be held this weekend in Mombasa. The
competition is organised by Muslim Mer-
cy Youth.

Uhuruto- Address the plight of rendition victims
Among the benefits emanating from Presi-
dent Uhuru Kenyattas recent visit to Chi-
na is the signing of an agreement which
would allow the transfer of Kenyans held
in Chinese prisons to complete their pris-
on terms back home in Kenya.
An estimated 80 Kenyans are being held
in Chinese prisons, most of them convict-
ed on drug trafficking charges. China has
some of the stringent laws on drug traf-
ficking and offenders upon conviction are
handed either long term prison sentences
or a death penalty.
After their acquittal from The Hague-
based International Criminal Court (ICC),
the head of state and his deputy William
Ruto made it clear that they will not allow
Kenyans to be jailed in foreign countries.
The pact with the Chinese is perhaps
among the measures towards fulfilling this
pledge which if implemented will see con-
victed Kenyans serving their jail terms in
their home country.
On the same premise, three Kenyans who
were set free by a Uganda court continue
to languish in jail, more than a year after
their acquittal. Muhammad Hamid Sulei-
man, Suleiman Mbuthia and Omar Awadh
Omar were part of a group of six Kenyans
arrested in the country and unceremoni-
ously shipped to Uganda in a much criti-
cized rendition programme involving the
two countries.
The suspects were charged with involve-
ment in the deadly bombing targeting foot-
ball fans watching the 2010 World Cup
finals in the capital Kampala. More than
70 people lost their lives in the attack, the
worst of its kind in the country.
Three of the Kenyans were convicted and
handed life term sentences while another
three were found to be innocent and set
free. As they waited to savour their new
found freedom, the three were immediate-

Hodan Abdikafi Muhammad from Zeid Bin
Al-Khattab took the second position. In the
third position came Hamdi Said Muham-
mad from Al-Adalah Islamic centre. The
three girls were awarded cash prizes of
Sh40, 000, Sh35, 000 and Sh30, 000 re-
spectively.
It was a close contest in the 10 chapter
category with only one point separating
the competitors. Zahra Hilowlesh Hassan
from Rabii bin Amir madrasa and Bushra
Okash Abdullahi of madrasa Abdullahi bin
Hudhafa emerged position one and two
respectively while Hamdi Mustafa Abdi
from Muadh bin Jabal and Adna Abdi-
rashid Tahir of Abubakar Sidiq tied in posi-
tion three. They each took home a cash
prize of Sh27, 000, Sh23, 000 and Sh20,
000 respectively.
First position in the five chapter category

ly rearrested and slapped with a strange
charge of attempting to escape from pris-
on. More than a year later, they remain
in prison, have no access to legal repre-
sentation and are virtually in legal limbo
with no prospects for justice.
Back home, despite persistent calls for
government intervention, little has come
from the government to address their
plight. Foreign Affairs cabinet secretary
Amina Muhammad has been on record
stating that the government is concerned
about their welfare and pledged to take
use diplomatic channels to address their
plight but it has remained just that- an
unfulfilled promise. On this matter, there
is a growing feeling that the government
has abdicated its responsibility and aban-
doned the Kenyans who continue to face
injustice
After the Kibaki government took the
unprecedented steps of renditioning the
Kenyans to Uganda without due process,
the parliament, judiciary, civil society or-
ganisations and the Muslim leadership
came out strongly in condemning the
government as they affirmed that it was a
travesty of justice and it was prudent that
the suspects faced trial in the country as
the alleged crimes had been committed
within the country.
During their campaign trail in the search
for Muslim votes in 2013, Uhuru Kenyatta
and his then running mate William Keny-
atta were unequivocal that the issue of
the renditioned Kenyans will be immedi-
ately be addressed once they ascend to
power as they affirmed that they will see
to it that there are brought back to the
country to face justice while at home.
For the same efforts which the govern-
ment took to secure an agreement with
Chinese to extradite convicted Kenyan
drug traffickers to complete their sentenc-

In his address Jamia Mosque Committee
deputy treasurer Abdul Majid Abdulkarim
encouraged Muslim girls to maintain the
tradition of memorizing the Holy-Quran
and taking madrassa education seriously
so as to gain religious knowledge for their
spiritual well-being and development.
He further pointed out that learning and
memorizing the Book of Allah was a fun-
damental aspect of Islam and urged them
to sacrifice more time for the objective to
be realized.

to see to it that the renditioned Kenyans are
also given an opportunity to have their pris-

More so, the fate of the three Kenyans who
were released deserves attention not ne-
glect. The Uganda high court found Muham-
mad Hamid Suleiman, Suleiman Mbuthia
and Omar Awadh Omar to be innocent and
this validates previous assertions that the
renditions were illegal, unwarranted and a
travesty of justice. The government is man-
dated to protect and safeguard the rights of
all citizens and it should resort to diplomatic
channels at its disposal to ensure that that
its citizens are not left to rot in foreign de-
tention centres.
It is also imperative that the Muslim leader-
ship live up to its obligation of being the voice
of the Muslim community and appropriately
advocate for their rights. Some few years
back, the Council of Imams and Preachers
of Kenya (CIPK), National Muslim Leaders
Forum (NAMLEF) and the Supreme Council
of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) were relent-
less in calling on the government to live up
to its obligation and respect the rights of all
Kenyan citizens.
It was their strong and relentless advocates
for justice which contributed to the govern-
ment taking efforts to return Kenyans who
had been rendition to Ethiopia in a US
backed rendition exercise.
Ultimately, as the government took the re-
sponsibility of ensuring that it will abide by
the constitution and safeguard the rights of
its citizens, our expectations are that it will
live up to its obligation take steps to ensure
that renditions Kenyans are brought back
home and like the Kenyan detainees in
China-to also enjoy the privilege of being in
close vicinity with their loved ones.
Committee in conjunction with other part-
ners will continue supporting the competi-
tion as measure to contribute to Da'wah
activities and the improvement of madrasa
education in the community.
On his part Imam Jamia Mosque Sheikh
Muhammad Swalihu urged Muslim parents
to instill the Qur'an reading culture among
their children to develop their spirituality
and build good moral behaviours at a ten-
der age for them to be responsible persons
in the society.
The two-day competition held over the
weekend at Jamia Mosque attracted 68 par-
ticipants drawn from 26 different madrasas
and other learning institutions from Nairobi
and its environs.
The boys event began yesterday and clos-
es on Sunday with the awards ceremony
taking place at the mosque.
The annual competition was organized and
sponsored by Jamia Mosque Committee in
conjunction with African Muslims Agency
(AMA).

Allah Almighty has prescribed fasting in ac-
cordance with the highest wisdom. He has
commanded the fasting person to fast in
a moderate manner, so he/she should not
harm himself/herself by fasting or consume
anything that will invalidate the fast. Hence
the things that invalidate the fast are of two
types:
1.1 Things coming out of the body
Some of the things that invalidate the fast
involve things coming out of the body, such
as intercourse, deliberate vomiting, men-
struation and cupping. These things that
come out of the body weaken it. Hence
Allah has described them as being things
that invalidate the fast, so that the fast-
ing person will not combine the weakness
that results from fasting with the weakness
that results from these things, and thus be
harmed by his fast or his fast no longer be
moderate.
1.2 Things entering the body
Some of the things that invalidate the fast
involve things entering the body, such as
eating and drinking. If the fasting person
eats or drinks, he does not achieve the
purpose of fasting.
Allah Almighty has summed up the things
that break the fast in the verse where He
says: So now have sexual relations with
them and seek that which Allah has or-
dained for you (offspring), and eat and
drink until the white thread (light) of dawn
appears to you distinct from the black
thread (darkness of night), then complete
your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall. (al-
Baqarah 2:187).
In this verse Allah the Merciful mentions
the main things that invalidate the fast,
which are eating, drinking and intercourse.
The other things that break the fast were
mentioned by the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) in his Sun-
nah. There are seven things that break the
fast, as follows:
1- Intercourse
2- Masturbation
3- Eating and drinking
4- Anything that is regarded as coming un-
der the same heading as eating and drink-
ing
5- Letting blood by means of cupping and
the like
6- Vomiting deliberately
7- Menstruation and nifaas (i.e. blood after
birth)
Intercourse: The most serious and the
most sinful of the things that invalidate the
fast. Whoever has intercourse during the
day in Ramadaan deliberately and of his or
her own free will, in which the two circum-
cised parts meet and the tip of the penis
disappears in either of the two passages,
has invalidated his fast, whether he ejacu-
lates or not.
He has to repent, complete that day (i.e.,
not eat or drink until sunset), make up that
days fast later on and offer a severe expia-
tion. The evidence for that is the hadeeth
DA'WAH
Things that invalidate the fast
narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be
pleased with him) who said: A man came
to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Al-
lah be upon him) and said, I am doomed,
O Messenger of Allah! He said, Why are
you doomed? He said, I had intercourse
with my wife (during the day) in Rama-
daan. He said, Can you free a slave? He
said, No. He said, Can you fast for two
consecutive months? He said, No. He
said, Can you feed sixty poor persons?
He said, No. Narrated by al-Bukhaari in which case it is permissible. In that case
Masturbation: The second of the things
that invalidates the sawm (fast). It means
causing ejaculation or climax by using the
hand etc. According to ulamaa causing
ejaculation comes under the heading of
the desire which the fasting person gives
up. Whoever masturbates during the day
in Ramadaan has to repent to Allah and re-
frain from eating and drinking for the rest
of the day, and he has to make up that fast
later on.
With regard to the emission of madhiy (i.e.
prostatic fluid), according to the most cor-
rect view is that it does not invalidate the
fast.
Eating or drinking: The third of the
things that invalidate the fast. This refers
to food or drink reaching the stomach via
the mouth. However, anything reaches the
stomach via the nose, can be also con-
sidered as eating or drinking. Hence the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) said: Snuff up water deeply into
the nose (when doing wudu), except when
you are fasting. Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.
If water reaching the stomach via the nose
did not invalidate the fast, the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
would not have told those who are fasting
not to snuff up water deeply into the nose.
The fourth of the things that invalidate the
fast is anything that is regarded as com-
ing under the same heading as eating and
drinking. This includes two things:
1- Transfusion of blood to one who is fast-
ing such as if he bleeds heavily and is
given a blood transfusion. This invalidates
the fast because blood is formed from food
and drink.
2- Receiving via a needle (as in the case of
a drip) nourishing substances which take
the place of food and drink, because this is
the same as food and drink.
With regard to injections which do not re-
place food and drink, rather they are ad-
ministered for the purpose of medical treat-
ment such as penicillin or insulin or
are given to energize the body, or for the
purpose of vaccinations, these do not af-
fect the fast, whether they are intravenous
or intramuscular (injected into a vein or a
muscle).
Kidney dialysis, in which blood is extracted,
cleaned and then returned to the body with
the additional of chemical substances such
as sugars and salts etc. is regarded as in-
validating the fast. (Fataawa al-Lajnah al-
Daaimah)
Cupping or Hijamah: is the fifth of the

things that invalidate the fast. The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
said: The cupper and the one for whom
cupping is done have both invalidated their
fast. (Abu Dawood)
Donating blood comes under the same
heading as cupping, because it affects the
body in the same way. Based on this, it is
not permissible for a person who is fast-
ing to donate blood unless it is essential,
the donor has broken his fast and must
make up that day later on. (Sheikh Ibn
Uthaymeen, Majaalis Shahr Ramadhan).
If a person suffers a nosebleed, his fast is
valid, because that happened involuntarily.
(Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daaimah).
With regard to bleeding that results from
extraction of a tooth, surgery or a blood
test etc., that does not invalidate the fast
because it is not cupping or something that
is similar to cupping, unless it has an effect
on the body similar to that of cupping.
Vomiting deliberately: Is the sixth of the
things that invalidate the fast. In this re-
gard, the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him) said: Whoever vomits
involuntarily does not have to make up the
fast, but whoever vomits deliberately let
him make up the fast. (Tirmidhi).
Whoever vomits deliberately by sticking
his finger in his throat, pressing his stom-
ach, deliberately smelling something nasty
or persisting in looking at something that
makes him vomit, has to make up his fast
later on.
Menstruation and nifaas: The seventh
of the things that invalidate the fast. The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) said in this respect: Is it not the
case that when she gets her period, she
does not pray or fast? (al-Bukhari).
When a woman sees the blood of her peri-
od or nifaas, her fast becomes invalid even
if that is one moment before sunset. But
If she feels that her period has started but
no blood comes out until after sunset, her
fast is still valid. If the bleeding of a woman
who is menstruating or in nifaas ceases at
night and she has the intention of fasting,
then dawn comes before she does ghusl
(i.e. religious bath), the view of the schol-
ars is that her fast is valid.
If a woman takes pills and her period stops
as a result, that is fine, she can fast and her
fast is acceptable. But it is preferable for
a woman to keep to her natural cycle and
to accept that which Allah Almighty has de-
creed for her, and not to take any medicine
to prevent her period. She should accept
what Allah has decreed for her of not fast-
ing during her period, and make up those
days later on.

How to sustain the spirit of Ramadhan during non-fasting days
Umm Maryam
Ramadhan is a time we all prepare for in
anticipation for all the extra rewards and
closeness to Allah we can gain during this
precious month. Although we may be fast-
ing, Ramadhan should be the most pro-
ductive time of the year, spiritually, socially
and personally.
However, sisters face a different productiv-
ity challenge due to menstruation or post-
natal bleeding. As we are unable to fast,
pray taraweeh or qiyam or read Quran
from the mushaf, the non-praying period
can often lead to a feeling of distance and
spiritual loss from the benefits of Ramad-
han.
Think about it: you have started Ramad-
han in full swing, with good habits and
ibadah, enjoying fasting and the spirit that
comes with it. Then all of a sudden, you
cant pray and fast for the next week! How
do you proceed? How can we continue to
feel the spiritual high, instead of slacking
and becoming lazy?
In this article, I will share practical tips
and advice on how you can use the non-
fasting days to sustain your spirituality dur-
ing Ramadhan, and make the most of the
short, invaluable time that we have.
Realise the blessing of Ramadhan
When we realise the value of the month of
Ramadhan, we see that not one second
can go to waste, as every second can be
spent in gaining reward, by both intention
and physical action. It is difficult enough for
sisters to maintain ihsan (excellence) in all
the roles we have during a normal month
in the year, let alone Ramadhan, and the
non-praying period adds yet another pro-
ductivity challenge! So, this is an ideal time
to remind ourselves of the virtues of Rama-
dhan:
Allahs Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sal-
lam said: When the month of Ramadhan
starts, the gates of the heaven are opened
and the gates of Hell are closed and the
devils are chained. [Sahih al Bukhari]
What we must remember is that praying
salah, reading Quran from the mushaf
and fasting are not the only ways to wor-
ship Allah .
This is especially important for women who
are in their post-natal period, as they have
a much longer time without obligatory acts
of worship. As Allah has granted this con-
cession Himself, we do not lose out on the
reward when we are unable to fast or pray!
However, we will be held accountable for
any time wasted during the non-praying
period, especially if it is not spent with the
intention of worshipping Allah .
Ramadhan does not unfortunately make
us immune to committing sinful acts; just
as in the rest of the year, the non-praying
period can often lead sisters to slipping
into bad habits and laziness, due to the
sudden break we get from our obligatory
duties. This has a domino effect as it can
make it twice as hard to return to good iba-
dah when the menstrual or post-natal pe-
riod is over. When we remind ourselves of

the blessings attached to worship in Rama-
dhan, it provides more motivation to fill our
non-praying days with other acts of ibadah.
Additionally, overall productivity and
barakah in other areas of our lives pro-
fessional, social and personal are de-
pendent on how we worship Allah . When
we invest time into actions to worship Al-
lah during the non-praying period, we en-
sure that we not only sustain our spiritual
productivity, but our worldly productivity
too, and this is especially important dur-
ing Ramadhan. When you can start fasting
and praying again, you will find it so much
easier to get back into the flow of Ramad-
han, and you wont feel detached from that
Ramadhan feeling.
Three women, different challenges
Muslim women face a number of productiv-
ity challenges due to the number of differ-
ent roles they play on a day-to-day basis.
Have a look at the challenges faced by
three fictional women and think of ways
they can make the best of their non-fasting
days.
Case 1: Salmah Mahmood The Over-
time Mother
Salmah is a stay-at-home mother to Ab-
dullah and 9-year-old Hafsah. Abdullah
was born a few days before Ramadhan,
so Salmah is not fasting or praying due to
post-natal bleeding. Between breastfeed-
ing her new son, homeschooling Hafsah
and cooking iftar for her husband, Salmah
barely has time to think about ibadah dur-
ing Ramadhan, let alone schedule in more
acts of worship!
Case 2: Fatima Omar The Pregnancy
Dilemma
Fatima is pregnant for the first time and
is due to have her baby in the third week
of Ramadhan. So far, her pregnancy has
been normal but coming to the end of her
pregnancy, Fatima is beginning to feel
more tired and is looking forward to the
start of her maternity leave from her office
job. Having done lots of research and after
speaking to medical professionals, Fatima
has decided to fast on alternate days to
keep her energy up, especially with long
hours of fasting in hot weather. She still
wants to keep up her ibadah until the birth
of her baby, but is finding it difficult to be
fully productive both spiritually and profes-
sionally between her job and the fatigue
she is feeling from being heavily pregnant.
Case 3: Zahra Ali The working Musli-
mah
Zahra is a midwife at a nearby hospital
where she works long hours, both during
the day and at night. Zahra is fasting but
she is due to start her menstrual period
around 15th Ramadhan, during which she
is hoping to get extra sleep and rest as
she wont be going for taraweeh prayers or
wake up at Fajr time for suhoor. However,
she doesnt want to lose the Ramadhan
feeling and get lazy during her non-praying
period.
Alternative ways to worship Allah

The key to sustaining productivity when
you are not praying is to realise the innu-
merable ways we can worship Allah aside
from fasting and salah.
An important thing to remember is that with
all the roles that we play, whether you are a
mother, wife, student or a professional (or
all of the above!), fulfilling these roles with
ihsan (excellence) and with the intention to
please Allah makes it worship! For exam-
ple, in the case of Salmah who cannot fast
and pray due to post-natal bleeding, when
she feeds her baby, changes nappies and
generally supports her child, she is being
rewarded for those acts. Even if you can
only fit in one of the following acts of iba-
dah, whatever you do out of longing for the
pleasure of Allah is a form of worship. It
may not be possible to do all of the follow-
ing actions, but have the intention to do a
few select ones that are easy for you, and
focus on those this Ramadhan.
1. Purify your intention
Everything begins with intention, whether
you are fasting or not. The greatest deed
could be rejected by Allah if we did not
have the correct intention to begin with.
2. Block out time for ibadah
It may not be easy for Salmah, Fatima or
Zahra to plan a comprehensive schedule
for the second half of Ramadhan. To op-
timise your non-praying days, block out
a certain amount of time (it doesnt have
to be at the same time everyday) to fulfill
at least one of the actions listed here and
make a firm intention to complete this eve-
ryday. This will keep the spirit of Ramad-
han alive even when you cannot pray and
fast, In sha Allah.
3. Make a dua list
Write two dua lists: one that contains per-
sonal desires and wants, and another with
duas from the Quran and sunnah (all the
Rabbana duas from the Quran, for exam-
ple). Make these duas at the recommended
times, like during the last third of the night,
at iftar time and during rainfall.
4. Engage in constant dhikr
Dhikr is a beautiful way to remain connect-
ed to Allah at a time when it is so easy to
feel distant. Try and complete your morn-
ing and evening adkhar, increase salawat
upon Prophet Muhammad and fill your
minutes with precious istighfar. Dhikr is an
especially effective tool for busy mums as
you can feel connected to Allah even when
you are running around after your kids.
5. Stay connected to the Quran
Stay connected to the Book revealed dur-
ing this month by listening to your favourite
reciters and/or reading easy translations
and tafseer. Ponder the meaning of the
Quran and aim to implement one ayah
every day or to the best of your ability. Lis-

Involving children in Ramadhan
Allah has made fasting obligatory on all
sane, healthy Muslims during the month
of Ramadhan. Children are not expected
to fast until the age of puberty. However,
many children desire to take part in fast-
ing along with their family from a young
age. Although this can be challenging for
them, there are many benefits in allowing
and encouraging your children to fast from
a young age.
Fasting, just for a few hours a day, will teach
children a degree of self-control that they
might not exercise outside of Ramadhan. It
will also help mentally and physically pre-
pare them in a progressive manner as they
get older, so that when they are obliged to
start fasting, it's not a complete shock to
their system. Finally, fasting serves as a
means of taking part in Ramadhan, allow-
ing them to develop their spiritual connec-
tion with Allah from an early age.
Let us look at some of the ways in which
we can encourage our children to get in-
volved in Ramadhan.
Start when they're young
Children will inevitably be involved in
some aspect of Ramadhan from the time
they're born. Whether it's sleeping next
to their mothers during taraweeh or set-
ting the table for iftar - try and encourage
their involvement in Ramadhan to instill a
love and appreciation for the month from a
young age. For those too young to fast at
all, introduce special Ramadhan time ac-
tivities to highlight the significance of the
month for them. This could be something
as simple as making Ramadhan cards for
family or giving dates to friends and neigh-
bors.
Small dosages
Fasting only becomes obligatory after pu-
berty so when the children are young, try
out partial fasts during the day. Let them
"fast" from breakfast till lunch, then gradu-
ally increase this so they can get used to
the idea as they get older. Children who
can manage it may be able to fast entire
days, possibly just the weekends if school
days are too tiring.
Similarly, encourage them to increase their
ibaadah bit by bit - if they normally read
one page of Qur'an a day, try and make it
2, or try and get them to pray more of their
daily sunnah or nafl salaah. Be sure to in-
form them of the increased reward of good
deeds during Ramadhan.
Reward
While we know that all reward comes from
Allah, sometimes this can be a bit harder
for children to understand. A tangible re-
ward for their efforts during Ramadhan can
help encourage their spirit. Try creating a
chart with stickers to mark out the days
they fast, or give them a small gift of some
sort to acknowledge their daily attempts.
Visit the masjid
Try and take your older children to the mas-
jid at the time of iftar. A communal breaking
of the fast will help bring about the spirit of
Ramadhan.
Encourage good deeds
YOUTH
Remind your children of the importance
of doing good during Ramadhan. Encour-
age them to be kind to their siblings and
friends, to give a small amount in charity
daily and to make dua to Allah.
Distract them
Do not force children to fast the entire day
if they are struggling as there is no obliga-
tion for them to do so. Do try and distract
them for as long as you think appropri-
ate, especially just before iftar when the
smell of food may tempt them. During the
time of the Prophet salallahu alayhi was
allam, the women of the village of Ansar
said they would make their boys fast and
if any of them started crying, their moth-
ers would give them toys made of wool to
distract them (Bukhari). Try and take the
children's minds off food but remember to
find a balance between pushing them too
far and giving in too easily.
Feed them wisely
While there may be a temptation to "re-
ward" children who attempt to fast with
their favorite meals and treats, this could
do them more harm than good. Exces-
sively sugary and fatty foods will not
benefit their health during Ramadhan.

long-lasting energy for children who are
fasting and remember to control their por-

Change their habits
As we adults try to reform our lives and char-
acter, so too should our children. Try and
change your children's daily activities to be
more in keeping with Islam. Restrict movies,
cartoons, iPads and TV games etc. and in-
stead encourage them to read Islamic stories
or listen to Qur'an. While these habits may
be difficult to maintain after Ramadhan, at
least make it clear to the children that things
need to be different during the month.
Company
Try and take your fasting children to visit
their young friends who are also fasting. This
will help build a companionship and can help
them encourage one another. In the case of
children of different ages where some may
be fasting and others not, make sure the
younger ones are conscious of their older
siblings or friends and are not showing off
their food unintentionally.
Above all, remember to use Ramadhan as
a time to prepare your young ones for when
they are older. Instill a love and appreciation
for the month and Insha Allah the rest will fol-
low suit as they grow up. Acknowledge and
reward their efforts and do what you can do
to make their attempts easier. May Allah re-
ward them and us for trying, ameen.
Mandera senator Billow Kerrow, Balam-
bala MP Abdikadir Aden and former deputy
speaker of parliament Farah Maalim have
all condemned the killing of camels and de-
manded for justice to be served to the vic-
tims. The leaders accused the government
of trying to impoverish the Somali pastoralist
community.
The father of nine lamented that the only
thing he is left with is 4 injured camels which
he says will have to be slaughtered before
they succumb to injuries. He reached out to
the government to take action against the of-
ficers responsible for the killing of livestock
and called on well-wishers to come to their
rescue and provide them with essentials
items such as water and food.
Another herder Ibrahim Taqal Tarbi said he
lost 70 heads of camel in the shooting. Two
of my sons were herding camels when they
were approached by security forces who in-
discriminately fired at the herd killing 55 of
them in one place, several others were shot
at different areas while I cannot account for
the rest of my camels, he said.

As Islamic finance industry continues to
gain acceptance and goodwill in Kenya, we
are bound to see many players positioning
themselves to gain entry into the market
and the existing service providers upping
their game.
Dubai Islamic bank popularly known as

6. Seek knowledge
Fatima, who isnt fasting due to pregnancy,
can select a book or watch a series of lec-
tures to gain and apply as much knowledge
as possible. She can do this while lying
down and relaxing, or when she is heading
home after work. Even Salmah and Zahra
can watch one of many YouTube Rama-
dhan series and podcasts by renowned
scholars at their convenience.
7. Earn the reward of fasting!
When Zahra Ali returns from a long shift
at the hospital, all she can think about is
putting up her feet and relaxing! However,
she remembers that there is a huge reward
in giving iftar to the one who is fasting. So
make the most of the extra time and en-
ergy you have during non-fasting days to
help your family prepare iftar, send iftar
over to the neighbors or to those breaking
their fast at the local mosque as Prophet
Muhammad said: Whoever gives food for
a fasting person to break his fast, he will
have a reward like theirs, without that de-
tracting from their reward in the slightest.

Similarly, Fatima and Salmah can plan to
make simple iftars, and Salmah can enlist
the help of her daughter when preparing
food or doing household chores.
8. Get socially productive
Contributing on a social level is often ne-
glected during Ramadhan as we all focus
on personal actions, but Ramadhan is an
ideal time to invest back into the commu-

Fifty years after Israel occupied the Pal-
estinian territories, its policies in the West
Bank and Gaza are at the root of Pales-
tinian hardship, the United Nations said
Wednesday.
"Occupation policies and practices remain

occupied Palestinian territories," the UN
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA) said in a report.
West Bank and Gaza residents suffer from

Gaza also restricts humanitarian work.
"At its heart, the crisis is one of a lack of
protection for Palestinian civilians -- from
violence, from displacement, from restric-
tions on access to services and livelihoods,
and from other rights violations."

Gaza Strip during the 1967 Six-Day War.
Repeated efforts to negotiate a solution
to the conflict and establish an independ-
ent Palestinian state alongside Israel have

Kenya (CIPK) national Chairman Sheikh
Abdalla Ateka urged Muslims to make the
best of these period noting that the Holy

and Labour Relations Court in Garissa
