Different Types of Resume Formats

Not all resumes are befitting the requirements of all professions.
Here is a brief list of the types of resumes (i.e. CV curriculum vitae), and which would
be suited for what kind of professional:
1. Chronological Resume:

What is a chronological resume format?

A chronological resume is a resume which lists down all the jobs that the
professional has held in a definite timeframe. A chronological resume is best for
people who have progressed in their professional life through working in different
companies. A chronological resume can basically be considered as a time line of
a persons progress from one job position to its higher.
The chronological resume is best used to show the progress that a person has
done either in a short span of time or in a few or several companies.

A chronological resume begins with your work history listed from most recent to oldest.
Your education, skills, etc. are listed after your job experience. Employers like this type
of resume because of the simplicity of reading the resume and seeing relevancy. Its
also an excellent choice for those just entering the work force.

The Most Common Resume Format is the Chronological Resume

There are a number of different resume formats including size and shape.
However, the chronological resume is the most common format seen.

It All Begins With First Things

Youll begin by presenting your work history beginning with your current position and
moving backwards to that very first job.
That is unless youve been around for a while and then you should consider limiting
your job history. This resume is a good choice for anyone who has had stable career,
which is solid and resulted in only a couple of fields. If you began your career as a
carnival worker you probably want to opt for a different format.

Highlighting Growth
The chronological resume highlights your growth and how youve matured throughout
your career, or throughout you time with a particular company.
It offers a format thats easy to follow even during the interview process. Its a bit tough
to put together so that you get the maximum value out of it, but worth your time and
energy. It is not recommended if you are returning to work after an extended leave of
absence or if you are crossing into new fields.

The Strengths and Weaknesses of a Chronological Resume

Strengths
This list details the strengths of a chronological resume:

It is an excellent way to highlight your work experience in chronological order if

the job you are applying for aligns with your history.

Because this resume provides a timeline sequence, the potential employer can
easily follow your career.

Highlights job titles, job position, and organizations youve previously worked for.

It is the most factual resume because the timeline is built into it.

Weaknesses
This list details the weaknesses of a chronological resume:

A potential employer can easily detect gaps and breaks in your employment

It allows the employer to recognize if you are a party that changes job to
frequently.

Your career path may look illogical

Your resume is an important tool. Its your first chance to make an impression, which
can lead to the illusive interview.
Without the interview there is no chance at getting the job, so make the most out of your
chronological resume and give it the attention it deserves. Make your resume the one
the employer wants to further explore in person.

2. Functional Resume:
What is a functional resume format?
A functional resume is basically used by a person who has too much of
experience of too little or a singular responsibility. A functional resume is basically
used by a person who has held a number of job-positions in a single or very few
companies. A functional resume also helps you highlight your achievements in a
better understood manner if you have worked in several companies in the same
position.
The Functional Resume Template

By using the functional resume template, you can create a powerful resume that will get
your skills noticed.

Grouping by Skill Headings

The functional resume groups accomplishments into functions or skill headings.
For example, you might have:

Sales

Managements

Administration

Product development

Finance

Under each of those skill headings, you would list your accomplishments by priority from
most relevant to least relating to the current position you are applying for.
Its easy to target for each position you apply for, and it makes your resume much more
powerful than prioritizing by when things occurred. Using a functional resume template
your work history, which includes dates of employment, company names, and job titles,
is listed following your achievements.

When to Select? Who Should Use a Functional Resume

There are a number of people who can benefit from the functional resume format:

If you have a wealth of diverse experience but you dont have a focused career
path

If you are a student with minimal experience or non-relevant experience

If you are making a career change

If you are transitioning from a military career

If you have gaps in your employment history

Older workers

If you have a job title that doesnt correctly represent your responsibilities

When Not to Use a Functional Resume

In recent years, there has been some backlash from employers when it comes to
functional formats.
Some employers who not used to the functional format are confused by it, even
annoyed. Recruiters hate functional formats so it is not recommended that you use
these formats. You should also avoid if you are applying for a position in one of the
more conservative fields.

Banking

Law

Financing

Head hunters

None of these like the functional format. You also cannot use online.

Reader Friendly Functional Resume

To create a reader friendly functional resume try to include lots of context.

By doing so, the employer can get a pretty good idea if your skills match what they are
looking for. For example, the breakdown of leadership would look much different for a
student than a manager thats been in the workforce for 20 years. By including a
complete breakdown of the skills under leadership, the employer can easily determine
whether the applicant is under qualified, over qualified, or exactly what he/she might be
looking for. Use a functional resume template to ensure you get the most from this
resume format.

3. Combination Resumes (also called hybrid resume):

A combination resume is actually a good combination of the chronological
resume and the functional resume.
The combination resume basically takes the best parts of the chronological as
well as the functional resume. The combination resume makes a note of your
work history, as well as giving special attention to your qualities and qualifications
on a professional level.

Who is the Combination Resume Best for?

As the name suggested this resume format combines the functional and chronological
resume formats.
There are a number of job seekers who the combination resume can benefit including:

Workers whose employment history is steady and consistent

Students

New graduates

Entry level job seekers

Those who are making a career change

Older workers with an extensive employment history who will want to focus on
their strongest qualifications

Those who are re-entering the job market

A Combination Resume Template: Writing in a hybrid resume style

A strong point of the combination resume is that it is flexible, so you can structure it in a
manner that is best for you.
The strategy here is to begin with a career summary, which is also called a
qualifications summary. This will emphasize your strongest credentials so that the hiring
manager will see it immediately and be enticed to read the balance of your resume. In
the summary you can highlight key skills, job experience, and expertise that are relevant
to the position you are applying for, while still maintaining the chronological format that
the majority of employers still prefer.

Here is the layout

Section #1 Name and Contact Information Across the top you will include
your name, street address, phone number, cell number, and email address. This can be
done in a banner format or centered in the page.
Section #2 Education Next you will add your education. Many job postings
request certain education so the sooner they can see that you have the requirements
the better.

Section #3 Certifications, Licenses, and Honors Create a bulleted list of

your certifications, licenses, and honors that you have. Be sure to list them all including
first aid certifications.

Section #4 Skills and Knowledge Base Here you will create a bulleted list
of your skills and knowledge. Take your time creating this list and put your best foot
forward. List relevant skills to the position you are applying for.

Section #5 Career Achievements Here you will create a bulleted list of your
major career accomplishments.

Section #6 Work Experience This is the final section and its a list of your
work experience.

Your Personal Billboard

Your resume is your personal billboard advertising who you are.
You want to emphasize your strengths, while at the same time down playing your
weaknesses. You should always dedicate the necessary time and energy to your
resume, because doing so can be the difference between a call for an interview and
being passed over.

The Strengths and Weaknesses of a Combination Resume

Strengths:

If you have very little work history the combination resume allows you to highlight
your skills without focusing on your short work history.

If you about to make a radical career change this format can ensure you skill set
is emphasized rather than you have no experience in the field of the application.

If you have been employed for any length of time or have worked the same job
for a long time, the combination resume will show case the skills youve gained.

Weaknesses

If you change jobs often the combination resume emphasizes that.

If you are applying for a job that doesnt seem logical it will be emphasized.

If you are trying not to show your age this resume format will allow the employer
to get a pretty good idea of your age.
