Simplified stability information

Simplified stability information eliminates the

need to use cross curves of stability and
develop righting lever GZ curves for varying
loading conditions by enabling a ships
stability to be quickly assessed, to show
whether or not all statutory criteria are
complied with, by means of a single diagram
or table.
Three methods of presentation are in
common use. These are:
(a) The Maximum Deadweight Moment
Diagram or Table.
(b) The Minimum Permissible GM
Diagram or Table.
(c) The Maximum Permissible KG
Diagram or Table.

In all three methods the limiting values are

related to salt water displacement or draft.
Free surface allowances for slack tanks are,
however, applied slightly differently.
Maximum Permissible Deadweight
Moment Diagram
This is one form of simplified stability data
diagram in which a curve of Maximum
Permissible Deadweight Moments is plotted
against displace- ment in tonnes on the
vertical axis and Deadweight Moment in
tonnes metres on the horizontal axis.
The Deadweight Moment being the moment
of the Deadweight about the keel.
The total Deadweight Moment at any
displacement must not, under any
circumstances, exceed the Maximum
Permissible Deadweight Moment at that
displacement.
STABILITY REQUIREMENTS AS PER
INTERNATIONAL CODE ON INTACT STABILITY, 2008
GENERAL FOR ALL TYPES OF SHIPS
The area under the righting lever curve (GZ
curve) shall not be less than 0.055 metre-
radians up to 30 deg.
angle of heel and not less than 0.09 metre-
radians up to 40 deg or the angle of down-
flooding if this angle is less than 40 deg.
Additionally, the area under the righting lever
curve (GZ curve) between the angles of heel
of 30 deg and 40 deg or between 30 deg and
angle of down flooding if this angle is less
than 40 deg, shall not be less than 0.03
metre-radians.
STABILITY REQUIREMENTS AS PER
INTERNATIONAL CODE ON INTACT STABILITY, 2008

GENERAL FOR ALL TYPES OF SHIPS

The righting lever GZ shall be at least 0.2 m
at an angle of heel equal to or greater than
30 deg.
The maximum righting lever shall occur at an
angle of heel not less than 25 deg.
The initial metacentric height GM0 shall not be
less than 0.15 m.
Angle of down flooding is an angle of heel at which
openings in the hull, superstructures or deckhouses
which cannot be closed weather tight immerse. In
applying this criterion, small openings through which
progressive flooding cannot take place need not be
considered as open.
SPECIAL CRITERIA FOR PASSENGER SHIPS

Passenger ships shall comply with the

requirements as applicable to all types of
ships.
In addition, the angle of heel on account of
crowding of passengers to one side as defined
below shall not exceed 10 deg.
A minimum weight of 75 kg shall be assumed
for each passenger except that this value
may be increased subject to the approval of
the Administration. In addition, the mass and
distribution of the luggage shall be approved
by the Administration.
SPECIAL CRITERIA FOR PASSENGER SHIPS

The height of the centre of gravity for

passengers shall be assumed equal to:
1 m above deck level for passengers
standing upright. Account may be taken,
if necessary, of camber and sheer of deck;
and
0.3 m above the seat in respect of seated
passengers.
Passengers and luggage shall be considered
to be in the spaces normally at their disposal,
when assessing compliance with the criteria.
SPECIAL CRITERIA FOR PASSENGER SHIPS

Passengers without luggage shall be

considered as distributed to produce the most
unfavourable combination of passenger
heeling moment and/or initial metacentric
height, which may be obtained in practice,
when assessing compliance with the criteria.

In addition, the angle of heel on account of

turning shall not exceed 10 deg.
Stability Criteria for Grain Cargo

the angle of heel due to the shift of grain

shall not be greater than 12 or in the case of
ships constructed on or after 1 January 1994
the angle at which the deck edge is
immersed, whichever is the lesser;
in the statical stability diagram the net or
residual area between the heeling arm curve
and the righting arm curve up to the angle of
heel of maximum difference between the
ordinates of the two curves, or 40 or the
angle of flooding (), whichever is the least,
shall in all conditions of loading be not less
than 0.075 metre-radians;
Stability Criteria for Grain Cargo

the initial metacentric height, after correction

for the free surface effects of liquids in tanks,
shall be not less than 0.30 m.
Before loading bulk grain the master shall, if
so required by the Contracting Government of
the country of the port of loading,
demonstrate the ability of the ship at all
stages of any voyage to comply with the
stability criteria required by this section.
After loading, the master shall ensure that
the ship is upright before proceeding to sea.
Volumetric Heeling Moments (VHM)

The bulk carriers' grain loading manual

contains Volumetric Heeling Moments (VHM),
which are values based on an assumed
surface grain shift of 15 (for a full
compartment) and 25 (for a partially full
compartment).
Document of authorization

A document of authorization shall be issued

for every ship loaded in accordance with the
regulations of this Code either by the
Administration or an organization recognized
by it or by a Contracting Government on
behalf of the Administration.
It shall be accepted as evidence that the ship
is capable of complying with the requirements
of these regulations.
The document shall accompany or be
incorporated into the grain loading manual
provided to the master.
Document of authorization

Such a document, grain loading stability data

and associated plans may be drawn up in the
official language or languages of the issuing
country.
If the language used is neither English nor
French, the text shall include a translation
into one of these languages.
A copy of such a document, grain loading
stability data and associated plans shall be
placed on board in order that the master, if
so required, shall produce them for the
inspection of the Contracting Government of
the country of the port of loading.
Document of authorization

A ship without such a document of

authorization shall not load grain until the
master demonstrates to the satisfaction of
the Administration, or of the Contracting
Government of the port; of loading acting on
behalf of the Administration, that, in its
loaded condition for the intended voyage, the
ship complies with the requirements of this
Code.
