*****************************************
Background and Program Information

In 2015, the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) established a blueprint that guides
the ASEAN community to become a people-oriented and environmentally friendly citizen, with a
focus on promoting sustainable development. One of the most important elements of the blueprint is
the aim to build an ASEAN identity so as to promote ASEAN awareness and create the sense of a
united community that serve as stepping stone toward the next step of ASEAN. In order to achieve
such goal, an effective use of media and information technology is crucial.
As of January 2017, it was estimated that 320 million people or half of the population of the
ASEAN community are internet users who are constantly exposed to information and media online.
Alongside the fast adaptation of digital technologies, traditional forms of media, such as newspapers
and radio, still exist. Once the potentials of media are realized, the awareness of ASEAN and the
sense of belonging in one community that may lead to the brighter future for ASEAN could be on its
way.
Recognizing the importance of the youths as efficient media users and the future of ASEAN
community, as well as acting as a platform for the dialogue between the ASEAN Member States, the
ASEAN Studies Center of Chulalongkorn University has inviting ASEAN students, who are the
future leaders of the ASEAN to gather at the ASEAN Youth Exchange Program 2017 - ASEANs
Next Step in the Changing World to enhance their understanding on the role of media and
information technology in the changing world and forge strong friendship among them. The
program, which includes lectures, discussions, workshop and site visits in Thailand, will be held
between 30th July 7th August 2017.

Objectives of the Program

1. To promote education on ASEAN within and outside of the region in various

dimensions, such as political-security, economic, and social-cultural perspectives
2. To foster understanding on the good relations and cooperation between ASEAN
countries
3. To promote friendship and understanding between ASEAN youths
4. To have the participating students understand and get accustomed to teamwork and
engaging in joint projects
5. To enhance experiences and knowledge which can be beneficial at the individual,
societal, and international levels in the future

Outcomes of the Program

Participants are expected to deliver the following outcomes at the end of the program;
1. E-magazine on a selected topic of ASEAN. (The topic will be assigned at the beginning of the
program. One group of participants MUST deliver one E-magazine.)
