In Memoriam:
Roxana Lunday Phillips 1933 2017
Early in the morning of May 1, 2017, Roxana Roxie Phillips
passed away peacefully. She was 83 years old. Born in rural
Rugby, North Dakota in 1933, Roxie would always carry with
her the self-reliant pragmatism of the 2,000-acre ranch of her
youth. In 1941, in fifth grade, she moved from North Dakota to
Los Angeles, California and began a new life. Eventually she
enrolled in Pasadena City College, sparking a lifelong interest
in visual arts. During this time she met her eventual husband
of 56 years, John Phillips, at a Memorial Day party in 1957.
After a move to San Diego in 1971, Roxie later completed her BA in Anthropology/
Archaeology from San Diego State University in 1979 and MA in History from the
University of San Diego in 1984. An accomplished archeologist and historian, she
contributed research through several local firms and her own consulting company,
Phillips Research Services. She later served as the President of the San Diego
Congress of History.
Roxie and John (who passed away in 2014) shared a passion for heritage. They
moved to Redmond in 2004 from San Diego, and by 2007, and had become very
active members of the Society (see their volunteerprofile, Redmond Recorder,
November 2007, pg 4). When John joined the Societys Executive Board, Roxie
continued to volunteer, helping John photograph and catalog the Societys collections.
Not only were Roxie and John very generous with their time and talent, they also
donated funds to set up the Societys Phillips Family Permanent Endowment.
