7. CONCLUSIONES
Llega el esperado y temido momento de escribir las conclusiones. Esperado porque significa
que los interrogantes y dudas existentes al iniciar este trabajo se han resuelto, al menos
parcialmente. Temido porque uno tiene la sensacin de que se le han quedado cosas por decir o por
estudiar.
Las conclusiones de este trabajo se han ido apuntando ya en forma de resmenes al finalizar
cada captulo. En lo que sigue se intenta sintetizar estas ideas dndoles una visin ms global.
El problema directo trata de resolver algunas de estas cuestiones. Se dan soluciones analticas
exactas y aproximadas para el caso de la esfera y el cilindro. Con ellas se busca qu
configuraciones electrdicas son ms sensibles a la deteccin de una esfera. Dado que se utilizan
sistemas de medida automticos, se proponen configuraciones multielectrdicas nuevas basadas en
configuraciones clsicas. La configuracin doble dipolo presenta la mejor visibilidad pero requiere
un detector con gran margen dinmico. La configuracin Schlumberger presenta un buen
compromiso entre visibilidad y margen dinmico. La visibilidad de una esfera conductora es el
doble que la de una esfera aislante. Adems depende cbicamente de la relacin radio-profundidad.
En el caso del cilindro esta dependencia es cuadrtica. La visibilidad, tanto de objetos esfricos
como cilndricos, se satura rpidamente con el contraste resistivo entre el objeto y el medio. As
para relaciones mayores a 100 o menores a 0,01 el objeto se comporta como totalmente aislante o
conductor respectivamente. A partir de la curva de resistividad aparente normalizada se determina
la profundidad y el radio de los objetos, lo que constituye una primera aproximacin al problema
inverso.
Sobre la instrumentacin
Aplicaciones como la prospeccin arqueolgica y estudios medioambientales o de Ingeniera
Civil requieren un gran nmero de medidas. Esto supone un gran trabajo manual al tener que
cambiar en cada nueva medida la posicin de los electrodos inyectores y/o detectores. Para reducir
este trabajo manual y acelerar el proceso de medida y de interpretacin de la resistividad del
subsuelo, se han implementado tres sistemas de medida automticos, dos para el laboratorio y otro
para medidas de campo. Estos sistemas permiten cualquier combinacin de electrodos inyectores y
detectores sobre una agrupacin de 16 electrodos (laboratorio) y 8 electrodos (campo). La seal
inyectada es alterna y la deteccin es sncrona para evitar los errores provocados por el potencial de
electrodo y las corrientes telricas. A frecuencias cercanas a 1 kHz el campo elctrico interferente
presente en el subsuelo es mnimo (Sumner, 1985). Adems, la impedancia de electrodo disminuye
con la frecuencia, por lo que con la misma tensin entre los electrodos inyectores la corriente
introducida en el terreno aumenta y por tanto la tensin detectada. La frecuencia mxima utilizable
viene limitada por la profundidad de penetracin y por el acoplamiento electromagntico entre el
inyector y el detector. El sistema PROGEO permite obtener de la parte real e imaginaria de la
impedancia medida, lo que lo diferencia del metodo resistivo clsico que detecta solamente la parte
real. Sin embargo, las seales detectadas estn contaminadas por la tensin en modo comn, por la

Un problema est mal definido si pequeos errores en los datos provocan grandes variaciones
en la solucin. El mtodo resistivo pertenece a esta clase de problemas (LaBrecque et al., 1996).
Los mtodos de mnimos cuadrados tratan de resolver esta dificultad regularizando el problema,
que consiste en aadir informacin a priori. Los mtodos de retroproyeccin regularizan el
problema utilizando la traspuesta de una matriz de sensibilidad ponderada. Aqu se han comparado
diferentes algoritmos utilizando datos sintticos (obtenidos resolviendo el problema directo para
una esfera) para las configuraciones electrdicas Schlumberger y doble dipolo. Los mtodos de
mnimos cuadrados son claramente superiores a los mtodos de retroproyeccin. Los mtodos de
Marquardt y TSVD obtienen los menores errores y localizan con mayor precisin el objeto. El
factor de regularizacin utilizado en el mtodo de Marquardt se determina mediante el mtodo de
la curva L (Hansen y O Leary, 1992, 1993).
Para resolver el problema inverso se ha linealizado el problema por lo que los valores de
conductividad estimados no son los reales. Esto se intenta solucionar normalmente mediante el uso
de mtodos iterativos. En este trabajo se adopta otra estrategia que consiste en aplicar un factor de
correccin a las imgenes obtenidas. El modelo escogido para el subsuelo tambin influye en el
valor de la conductividad estimada. Si el nmero de celdas es muy superior al nmero de medidas
el problema es muy indeterminado. Utilizando los mtodos de retroproyeccin como informacin a
priori se puede encontrar una solucin adecuada. A pesar de que las medidas con configuracin
doble dipolo tienen errores relativos mayores, se obtienen mejores resultados que con la
configuracin Schlumberger cuando en aqulla se eliminan las medidas ms errneas y se utiliza
una matriz de sensibilidad relativa. En general, para estimar correctamente la posicin de un objeto,
se han de utilizar imgenes y medidas 3D. Sin embargo, para objetos cuya resistividad no vara a lo
largo de un eje es posible utilizar medidas e imgenes 2D si la agrupacin de electrodos se dispone
perpendicularmente a dicho eje. En este caso se ha de realizar una integracin previa a lo largo de
este eje para calcular la sensibilidad de las celdas.

situado en el lado sur de la tubera. Las medidas se realizan antes y despus de verter el agua. Las
imgenes obtenidas permiten detectar la fuga en el lado sur de la tubera justo debajo del tubo de
Tanto en las medidas de laboratorio como en las medidas de campo se ha de utilizar una medida
de referencia para eliminar los efectos no debidos al objeto que se quiere detectar. Estos efectos se
deben a la presencia de capas, paredes laterales y a la inexactitud en la posicin de electrodos entre
otros. As pues, los mtodos utilizados en este trabajo para la obtencin de imgenes no son
absolutos sino ms bien diferenciales (Riu, 1991). Para que la deteccin de los objetos locales
tenga xito las separaciones entre electrodos, aunque no sean exactamente las previstas, han de
la influencia de otras estructuras no ha de cambiar
sustancialmente al desplazar la configuracin. Por ejemplo, si se conoce la existencia de una capa
debajo del objeto con una inclinacin en una determinada direccin la configuracin electrdica se
ha de disponer en esa direccin y desplazarse perpendicularmente a ella. ste es el caso de las
medidas de campo presentadas en el captulo 6, donde el sustrato rocoso presenta una ligera
inclinacin en la direccin del eje de la tubera. La deteccin de cambios temporales de la
resistividad (por ejemplo una fuga) es ms probable que se detecte con xito, ya que la
configuracin electrdica no se ha de mover y todos los efectos que no sean el propio cambio de la
