There is a correlation between language study and higher scores on

the SAT and ACT Tests.

Comparison of verbal Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and California Achievement Test (CAT)
scores of high school students who had or had not taken at least one year of foreign language
study supported the conclusion that length of foreign language study was positively related to high
SAT verbal scores.

Analysis of the American College Test (ACT) scores of 17,451 students applying for college
admission between 1981 and 1985 found that high school students who studied a foreign
language consistently scored higher on ACT English and mathematics components than did
students who did not study a foreign language in high school.

The correlation between language study and higher SAT scores is


not affected by a differences in economic background.

Data from the College Board’s Admission Testing Program revealed that SAT-verbal scores of
students who had taken four or five years of any other subject. A large-scale study conducted by
Eddy in 1981 concluded that students who study foreign languages for longer periods of time did
better on various SAT sub-tests and on the test as a whole that students who studied less foreign
language, even when the variable of verbal giftedness was controlled. Cooper’s own study of 23
metropolitan high schools in the southeast revealed that students who take a foreign language in
high school scored significantly higher on the verbal portion of the SAT than those who do not.
Economic background, which was measured by the number of students receiving free and reduced
lunches, did not affect students’ performance. Even those who came from lower socio- economic
backgrounds, but took foreign language, performed “basically just as well as their more fortunate
peers.”

Found that those who studied Latin, French, German, or Spanish in high school may be expected
to perform better academically in college than students of equal academic ability who do not take a

indicates that foreign language study provides both cognitive and sociocultural benefits. Cloud and
Genesee conclude, “Linguistic and cultural competence will be the mark of the well-educated
citizen of the 21st century.”

To be competitive on a global scale, the business world of tomorrow


needs individuals with strong skills in a second language who can
work within a culturally diverse environment.

* The U.S. is the third largest Spanish speaking country in the world.
* Fifty percent of all the jobs for the 21st century have not been created yet. What is known is that
communication will be central to the majority of these jobs.
.* According to the Kiplinger Washington Editors (1996), the Hispanic share of the workforce will increase by
25 percent by 2010. The Asian share will increase by 50 percent. Minorities will keep moving up the corporate
ladder in the next 15 years. Managers who know how to deal with a diverse workforce will have an advantage.
* "The workplace of tomorrow is a world of many cultures and languages ...with new forms of global commerce
we can't even imagine today" (Kiplinger Washington Editors, 1996).
