Psalms 23:1
(John 10:9 14, 1 Samuel 17:34 37)
[The Lord is my shepherd]
Work of a good Shepherd:
1. He leads them out and in, so that they
find pasture and safety.
2. He knows where to feed them, and in
the course of his grace and providence
leads them in the way in which they
should go.
3. He watches over them, and keeps them
from being destroyed by ravenous beasts.
4. If any have strayed, he brings them
back.
5. He brings them to the shade in times of
scorching heat;
[I shall not want] Jehovah-Jireh, the
Lord will provide, (Genesis 22:14).
How can they be in want?
*He who is their Shepherd has all power in
heaven and earth, therefore he can
protect them, Gen. 1:1.
*The silver and gold are his, and the cattle
on a thousand hills; and therefore he can
sustain them, Haggai 2:8, Psalms
50:10.
Psalms 23:2
[He maketh me to lie down in green
pastures: He leadeth me besides the
still waters]
Still waters Jehovah-Shalom, "the Lord
our peace" (Judges 6:22 24God
promised Gideon peace)
He assures us of His love, peace,
provision, protection and tender care
Ill be with you to the end of age,

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me
in the paths of righteousness for his
name's sake.

When the soul grows sorrowful, He
revives it;
When it is sinful, He sanctifies it;
When it is weak, He strengthens it
[In the paths of righteousness]

Internal Life
[For his name's sake] for He is the
Good Shepherd
*To display the glory of his grace and not
on account of any merit in me.
Psalms 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and
thy staff they comfort me.

God protects always even in the
presence of danger
He shows up in always even in
hopeless situations
Why you must not fear
[For thou art with me] the joy of the
Christian

God is our ever present help in time
of need

[Thy rod and thy staff they comfort straggling creature,) I will fear no evil: for
me] his rod and staff comfort me; his law and
his Gospel both contribute to my

Thou preparest a table before me in
the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oil; my cup
runneth over.

*Nothing is hurried, there is no confusion,
distraction, the enemy is at the door and
yet God prepares a table and the Christian
sits down and eats as if everything were in
perfect peace.
[Thou anointest my head with oil]
"anoint my head" Jehovah-M'Kaddesh,
"the Lord who sanctifies" (Leviticus 20:8)

May we live in the daily enjoyment of

this blessing, receiving a fresh anointing
for every days activities.
Perfumed oil was poured on the heads
of distinguished guests. The woman in
the Gospel, who poured the box of
ointment of spikenard on the head of
our Lord (see Matthew 26:6-7; Mark
14:8; Luke 7:46,) only acted according
to the custom of her own country,
which the host, who invited our Lord,
had shamefully neglected.
[My cup runneth over.]
*More than enough!
*Thou hast not only given me abundance
of food, but hast filled my cup with the
best wine.
Psalms 23:6
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life: and
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
for ever.

Your rod and your staff
1 The Lord is my shepherd;
protect and comfort me.
I have all that I need.

5 You prepare a feast for me

2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with
oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love
will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.
