Introduction
Singlephaseequivalentlinemodels(orpositivesequenceline
models)canbeusedquiteaccuratelyinthreephasesystemswhenthe
systemisbalancedandthelinesareperfectlytransposed.However,
whenunbalancedsystemsoruntransposedlinesarebeingstudied,
thesemodelsbreakdownandafullthreephasemulticonductormodel
isnecessary.

Considerthethreephase,singlecircuittowerlineinFigure1,which
showsthreephaseconductorsandanearthwire.Asegmentallengthof
thismulticonductorsystemcanberepresentedbytheequivalent
circuitinFigure2below:

Wecanseethatinamulticonductorsystem,thereismutualcouplingbetweenthephaseconductors(a,bandc),
representedbytheshuntinductancesandcapacitances.Inthesinglephaseequivalentlinemodel,thesemutual
couplingsareignored.Notethattherecouldalsoberesistivecouplingbetweenphases,butisnotshowninFigure2
sinceresistivecouplingisnormallyassumedtobenegligibleinoverheadlines(i.e.shuntconductances=0).

Recallthatinthesinglephaseequivalentlinemodel,wehavesinglecomplexquantitiesfortheseriesimpedance
