It is a myth that Nimsoft is a cheaper, simpler alternative to Big 4

Nimsoft & CA have 2 separate architectures; added complexity without common backend/GUI

NMS offers very limited monitoring of application server environments, which are regarded by most organizations as
critical nodes in modern application architectures Gartner
The complex setup and configuration of components and monitors requires assistance from the vendor, and an
understanding of the different components and configuration tools Gartner

Nimsoft itself is not a true SaaS
Nimsoft needs servers on premise that can act as a hub for the bus and hub model

Nimsoft Snap a free basic monitoring tool
Reality: CA introduced Nimsoft Snap because Nimsoft sales started declining. We are yet to
see deal progressions through Nimsoft Snap

CA announced on Oct 2013, CA Nimsoft Monitor Snap, a free version of CA Nimsoft

Monitor. It is free for upto 30 devices
Though they claim that it has generated a lot of interest - In the 100 days since the
product was introduced, 5000 customers in 147 countries downloaded Nimsoft

From their last earnings call - "we are in a state with less than 10 but more than 5

But CA is struggling with its APM solution
CA posted a decline of 3%, 3% and 5% for their Enterprise Solution sales in the last 3 quarters (Fiscal
1Q, 2Q, 3Q, 2014) Earnings Report
Their latest release of CA APM 9.5 (Wily + Introscope) has huge memory leak issues and they had to
revert back to previous versions
To overcome these issues, CA last year announced (April 2013) CA Wily on SaaS. Their CXO's pledged
support to get customers migrated to SaaS in their CA World conference last year
After such announces, the Wily SaaS solution is still not available for purchase due to stability and
performance issues !
Though they call this as a SaaS solution customers need to have a server on premise that will collect the
data from all the agents and forward it to the off premise SaaS
To add to the confusion, CA retired their NSM solution and are forcing customers to migrate to either
IM - Infrastructure Management or Nimsoft

Myth #1: CA Wily solutions are easier to consume & lower TCO

Reality: CAs Monitoring solutions are complex, do not scale, require more products & H/W

Wily is more complex and does not SCALE !

Requires 3 to 4 times the number of servers to manage the same number of JVM's as
ITCAM

Oversimplifies their complexity. Reps are trained to focus on simple issues in POCs and TCO

CAs monitoring solutions cost more than IBM to deploy
4 CA products to get to root cause analysis as IBM (SCM)
Wily add-on features such as memory leak analysis and change detection plus
services are all added costs
Integration is complex and introduces added infrastructure overhead in terms of
additional databases, connectors, etc versus IBMs single data warehouse

CAs Monitoring Strategy APM

What they talk about

Their look and feel of their GUI
Wily CEM data to Wily Introscope (diagnostics) contextual linkage is good, and require less clicks
to diagnose
The transaction profile is created using the Java agent and hence they can correlate easily

What they dont talk about

APM9 CEM and Introscope integration has added additional complexity MOM, APM database,
minimum of 3 servers needed to use CEM and Introscope together
CA Wily recommends not to turn on transaction tracing 24x7
Custom method tracing involves number of steps, requires knowledge of transaction path to
instrument
Need more hardware to scale e.g. assuming each JVM has 10 applications, a single Introscope
Server can only support 10-15 JVMs
Multiple architecture and products for complete resource, transactions, mainframe, availability
and deep diagnostics

CAs Monitoring Strategy Infrastructure Mgmt

What they talk about

They have another new integrated dashboard (Performance Center)
that can show integrated data from their infrastructure mgmt solns
including network data Network Aware Performance Monitoring
Performance center shows both Physical and Virtual infrastructure
data together

What they dont talk about

Their Performance Center dashboard also operates on the common
data model principle like Service Operations and has the same
resource overhead issues
The NetQos appliances and Gigastore products do packet capture
analysis but since they collects a huge volume of data, have
scalability issues
They have 2 solns for virtual infrastructure mgmt (one each for
guest OS and hypervisor)
These 2 integrate into spectrum and ehealth which then report into
performance dashboard
So you need to have all the above products to view the physical and
virtual infrastructure performance together (From IBM all the
customer needs is SmartCloud Monitoring)
Capacity planning is a separate soln comes again with its own
infrastructure and has 3 different products

CAs Monitoring Strategy Summary

Strengths
Nice looking GUIs

Weakness - Scalability
CA has appliance based solutions for transactions and networks monitoring
They need to deploy a lot of these appliances especially around load balancers to capture
transactions
These appliances does not scale and has a huge impact on performance
They are in the process of consolidating these appliances to reduce the infrastructure overhead

Weakness - Integration
They make use of Catalyst tool (Common data model and connectors) for integrating their
solutions
Their products talk to each other and are integrated but creates a huge overhead and complexity
that needs to be deal with in terms of
Additional databases, connectors and reconciliation services

Weakness - Depth
CA forces the customers to invest in a huge infrastructure that will not scale in order to provide the
depth that the customer needs
You need atleast 3 -4 solutions before you can view physical and virtual infrastructure performance together
Capacity planning is a separate soln comes again with its own infrastructure and has 3 different products
and needs Service Assurance portfolio in place before it can be used

IBM and CA: Head to Head Compare

Solution Compare CA APM vs. IBM APM

CA IBM Product Match CA's APM and Nimsoft solutions are based on different architectures forcing customers

CA Xtraction TBSM Only IBM provides the ability to marry agent and full agent technologies for transaction tracking and
resource monitoring. It takes a lot of machines for CA to trace transactions, because they combine
their TIM (CEM component) boxes, with Introscope to trace from machine to machine resulting in
