articlesreferringtoChineseNewYear(occurringaroundtheendofJanuaryandthebeginningofFebruary).WehearthatthisyearperhapsistheYearoftheRabbit,
oroftheDragon.Butthereisawhole,complexhoroscopesystembehindthesewords,asystemthatcanunlockmysteriesofthehumanpersonalityandcurrentevents
inanextremelyaccurateanduncannyway.
BasedontheChineselunarcalendar,Chineseastrologyisahighlypoeticsystemofinterpretingbothhumannatureandevents.Itisnotdogmaticorrigidinanysense
itpointsoutthebasiccharacteristicsandelementsthatdefineourpersonalitiesandbehavioraswellasthetimeandplaceinwhichwelive,anditcanleadustoa

WhiletheCommunistsinChinahavetriedtostampoutbeliefinChinesehoroscopes,thesystem,likeFengShuiandChiGong,hasbeenpreservedinChinaitself.It
hasalsobeengreatlyadheredtoandadvancedbyoverseasChinese,inHongKong,Taiwan,Singapore,Malaysia,theUnitedStates,andotherareasoftheChinese
Diaspora,wheretheancientbeliefshavebeenpreservedfortheirpracticalwisdom.
OnceyoubecomefamiliarwithChineseastrology,youwillbeamazedbyhowaccurateitcanbewhenyouapplyittoyourselfandthepeopleyouknow.InChina,it
isnotonlyconsideredanancientandexactingsciencebutanartformaswell.WhatispresentedhereisaverybasicintroductiontoChineseastrologythatcanbe
appliednotonlytopeople,butalsotocountries,givinguselementalinsightintonationalattitudesandcharacter.Itisnomerehistoricalorpoliticalcoincidence,for
instance,thattheUnitedStates,bornintheYearoftheFireMonkey(1776),andtheformerSovietUnion,bornintheYearoftheFireSnake(1917),wereinvolved
inaprolonged"ColdWar"thatwasbasedonnervousmistrustandcovertactivities,eachspyingontheotherandtryingtocatchtheiropponentunawareorthatthe

communicationbarrierswiththePeople'sRepublicofChina,whichwasbornintheyearofthestubborn,authoritarian,traditional,andrigidEarthOx(1949).
What'sYourSign?
TheChinesehoroscopeisbasedontheChineselunarcalendar,whichismadeupoffivecyclesoftwelveyearseach,withacompletecycletakingsixtyyears.Itwas
introducedbythelegendaryemperorHuangTi,knownastheYellowEmperor,between2700and2600B.C.E.Accordingtolegend,Buddhasummonedalltheanimals
tocometohimbeforehedepartedtheEarth.Onlytwelvecametopaytheirrespects,andtohonortheminreturnhenamedayearaftereachanimalintheorderthat
theyappeared,thusestablishingthetwelveyearcycle:Rat,Ox,Tiger,Rabbit,Dragon,Snake,Horse,Sheep,Monkey,Rooster,Dog,andBoar.
TheVietnamesehonortheRabbitastheCat,butnoChinesesourceidentifiesthefourthanimalofthezodiacastheCat.Accordingtoonestory,whenBuddha
summonedtheanimals,theCatwastobeamongthem,buttheRatfailedtodeliverthemessageandappearedintheCat'splace.AnotherversionhasitthattheRat
deliveredthemessage,buttheCatwassleepinganddidn'twanttomove.YetanotherstorystatesthattheCatwasexcludedbecauseithadcaughtthemousesacred
toMaya,Sakyamuni'smother.

AccordingtoaChinesesaying,oneoftheseanimalsignsis"theanimalhiddeninyourheart,"anddeterminesthedistinguishingcharacteristicsofyourpersonality,
behavior,andproclivitiesaccordingtotheyearandtimeofdayyouwereborn.
Butthereismuchmoretothesystem.Eachofthetwelveanimalsalsocorrespondstoadirectionandaseason.Also,eachsignisallottedoneofthefiveelementsof
Chinesealchemy(knownasits"fixed"element):Wood,ruledbytheplanetJupiterFire,ruledbyMarsEarth,ruledbySaturnMetal,ruledbyVenusandWater,
ruledbyMercury.Thefiveelementsarefurtherdividedintopositiveandnegativepoles,knowninChineseasYinandYang.Yinisfeminine,darkness,death.Yangis
masculine,light,life.InChineseart,medicine,andphilosophy,everythingisclassifiedunderthesetwopolarities,whicharerepresentedbytheT'aichi,thecircle
dividedintoYinandYang,thedarkandthelight,thesymboloftheoriginsofalllife,the"greatprimalbeginning"ofallthatexists.
ThefixedelementascribedtoeachoftheMoonsignsgovernsitasawholeandaffectsthesign'sbasicattributesforexample,theMonkey,whosefixedelementis
Metal.However,besidesthefixedelement,asecondelementisascribedtoeachyear,anditisthecombinationofthesetwoelementsthatdefinethemakeupofany
givenpersonality(alongwiththesignrulingthetimeofbirth).Theyear1968,forexample,wastheYearoftheEarthMonkey,
