#6Action Examples Analysis:

Select an Action Example to analyze more closely. Grade 5

Analyze and discuss the action example.
o Compare the given Library Context and Collaboration Continuum to
your school library setting.

My middle school has a fixed schedule but very little collaboration

with classroom teachers. In this example, the librarians were
collaborating with the classroom teachers. The lesson was integrated
with the state curriculum for health class. It is a great example of
collaboration and teaching skills in integration vs. isolation.

o Note any comparable Virginia SOL.

Information Access and Use (Health SOL)

5.4 The student will critically evaluate how print media, broadcast media, and Internet technology
influence perceptions of health information, products, and services. Key concepts/skills include
a strategies for validating health information;
a) tools for the critical evaluation of advertisements and promotions.

Research (Reading SOL)

5.9 The student will find, evaluate, and select appropriate resources for a research product.
a) Construct questions about a topic.
b) Collect information from multiple resources including online, print, and media.
c) Use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate, and communicate information.
d) Organize information presented on charts, maps, and graphs.
e) Develop notes that include important concepts, summaries, and identification of
information sources.
f) Give credit to sources used in research.
g) Define the meaning and consequences of plagiarism.

o Describe what you would do differently if you were to teach this

lesson.
Would you have a different Final Product?

Yes. I feel that a brochure is appropriate for sharing their

learning and understanding of higher level questions. The
students will share their brochure at the student health fair.
However, students should have choice such as a powerpoint or
poster as well. Students could hang the posters at the student
health fair.

Would you change Assessment of the Product, the Process, or

Student self-questioning?
Yes. I feel that assessment is appropriate. Students are working
with a partner to check their work. However, what about
students that are struggling? Could they work in a larger group
with more support or with an adult?

Would you change Instruction/Activities in any way?

More support needs to be given for ELL and sped students. A
list of examples should be provided of some sample higher level
and lower level question. A graphic organizer question chart is a
great idea for all students to record their notes.

The students need lessons on inquiry because it is a higher

level skill and it helps students think better, retain more
information and achieve higher test scores on standardized
tests.

Identify an additional standard which could be addressed in this lesson.
