CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction

Research is a structured analysis that utilizes acceptable scientific methodology

to solve issues and build knowledge that is generally applicable (Grinnell, 1993).
Methodology also refers to ways of obtaining, organizing and analyzing data (Polit
and Hungler, 2004).

In this chapter, it will be focus on research method to investigate and solve

problems towards case study. Types of research, methods used, data sampling and
data analysis will be discussed. Research can be scientific and systematic search for
related information on certain topic.

According to (The Advanced Learners Dictionary of Current English, 1952),

research can also define as a careful investigation or inquiry especially through
search for new facts in any branch of knowledge. This research focusing on
employee awareness of OSHA in manufacturing industry.

3.2 Data Collection Technique

Data collection technique in this case study will be distributed to employee of

Vacuumschmelze (M) Sdn. Bhd. For workers, questionnaire will be distributed and for
managerial team, an interview in person. Basically, both parts is followed by primary
research and secondary data.

18
3.2.1 Primary Research

Observation.

An observation will be conduct to identify the suitability of area for case study.
Vacuumschmelze (M) Sdn. Bhd. (VAC) had been chosen as research area because
it is manufacturing factory and lie under industry sector.

Questionnaire. (Quantitative Analysis)

Questionnaire will be distributed to workers as an indicator to measure the level

of awareness among them. It will include certain departments such as Quality
Assurance, Mechanical, Quality Control, Operations and others.

Interview. (Qualitative Analysis)

An interview with managerial team, especially the chief of Human Resources

Department will be conduct. Some of question list will be ask and from the interview
session then data can be collect and analyse. The result of interview will be
documented.

3.2.2 Secondary Data

Written resources.

Based on books, journals, articles, newspapers, magazines and others. Witten

resources can give information as a guideline in completing this research.

Internet.

Beside using written resources as sources, internet data is used to help gather
more information and keep tracking knowledge for the case study.

For employees:

3.2.3 Questionnaire and Interview Development

Questionnaire development is questions that need to be ask to respondents.

There are a few parts that have to be divided base on certain categories. These
divided parts make an easier data collection for the case study.

Section A

In section A, demographic details will be ask to the respondents. For examples,

age, gender, marital status and others. Basically in this section, background data of
respondents are collected in order to arrange the data base on demographic details.

Section B

This section is more focusing on whether the respondents are aware of

Occupational Safety and Health regulations that had been implemented in the
company. Respondents also will be ask about implementation of OSHA in the
workplace.

Interview Development is in person session that need to be done in order to

collect data for case study. A list of question is directly ask and all the answers are
kept in document.

3.3 Data Analysis Technique

Data analysis is a process of investigate, change, clean and model the data in order
to gain useful information, decision making and conclusion. It has many facets and
approaches depends on situation.

20
3.3.1 Interview Analysis

In interview analysis, there are three steps that need to be taken in order to
collect data. First is data reduction. Data reduction is a process to chose, coding, and
data specification. Interview session usually take up many information so reducing
the data is need but at the same time the aim of case study have to be in path along
the research project.

Second is data display. Data display is a presentation of data using quotes,

matrix, graph, chart illustrating patterns in order to understand the data. The third
steps are drawing conclusion where answer research question base on identified
themes, explanation, relationship and comparisons. Data display can be indicator to
draw conclusions based on patterns in reduced set of data.

3.3.2 Question Survey Analysis

Data that had been collected will be summarizing in Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences (SPSS). This program is from windows software and is used for data
entry, data analysis, data evaluation, build graphs, tables and others. SPSS can keep
records in detail arrangement and also capable of keep many data for records.

Frequency distributions will be use in other to key in data that had been
collected. Frequency distribution is a numerical display that shows the number of
data and usually the percentage of data. Descriptive statistics is used to describe
basic features of data collected. Besides that, graph and table will be use for better
explanation of data.

3.4 Summary of chapter

In this chapter, some and certain process and software are essential to help in
analysing and collecting data. SPSS is one of the software that keep the data in
organize and better arrangement. Besides that, SPSS also act as tool to make
decision and conclude data.

21
Process for interview session can help in order to stay within the right aim and
objective of case study. Qualitative analysis might not be easy but with wide
resources and right method can come up with accurate results for case study.

Research method can give new knowledge for researchers as there will always
need for data collection and resources in order to get results of research. Decision
making and solutions to problems might be solving with research methods.
