Dear Review Board Members,

My name is Adan Guerrero and as a future CIvil and Environmental engineer it is

clear that I have concerns for the environment and how we can improve our infrastructure.

Fossil fuels like Natural Gas, Coal, and Petroleum has been fueling our world and its

technological advances for more than a century. However, these sources of energy create a

lot of pollutants that have also been damaging our ecosystems in the air, water and the

ground itself. Even though regulations have helped reduce the pollution produced, the

regulations aren't strict enough and we are close to hitting a dangerously critical point on

the warming of the earth. The main reason can be traced back to the governments who do

not do enough to help turn around our damage to the earth by not funding projects that

create clean energy. That is my main issue for my project; Governments need to change

their policies in favor of the earth not the companies that currently power our world.
Governments need to fund projects such as Solar Roadways because they are energy

efficient, lessen dependency of fossil fuels to stop polluting the earth, and will benefit the

government economically in a variety of ways. When I first discovered the concept of Solar

Roadways I was blown away. I thought it was a sci-fi concept that was too good to be

created. However upon my research I found out major energy companies are investing in

this technology. My research was not only on how many projects are being made right now,

but also on the statistics to reinforce the need for funding this project. One of the main

projects that I found to back this concept is a prototype installed on a bike path in the

Netherlands. To this day the bike path has exceeded expectations on the amount of energy

produced and cost of maintenance. While it is only a few meters long, it has the capacity to

power the yearly energy consumption of 3 average households. Through more research I

began to see that this concept is not a futuristic theory but rather a global effort to shift our

dependence on harmful energy sources.

My SLE was essentially the application of this concept on a small scale project to be

able to apprehend the measures, planning, and costs for any solar powered system. My SLE

project is a tangible project that can benefit Garinger High. What I chose to do was to install

an off-grid system to power the lights of the Urban Farm Storage. Thanks to the donation of

Ms. Lemere I was able to obtain 2 solar panels that drastically reduced the cost of my costly

project. To complete the installations I needed other appliances to ensure the efficiency and

durability of the system. The system itself consists of the panels for energy absorption

followed by a regulator that regulates the amount of energy that is given to the storage

bank. This component is necessary because it prevents the overcharging and destruction of

the batteries from the storage bank. The storage bank follows and it consists of at least 2
Acid-lead batteries that can support the whole system. Lastly the part that connects the

systems and the lights is the converter that converts the energy into usable energy. Upon

the completion of my research on the supplies needed the estimated cost came up to be

around $300 dollars. Thanks to a career fair I was able to get a hold of a consulting

company that looks over major companies in the state such as Duke Energy. The CEO, Mr.

David A. Doctor, gave me 10 other CEOs and PResidents from other companies that can

potentially donate the supplies. So far only 2 have given any positive feedback. I plan to

complete this project ASAP.

My experience form the GRaduation Project has made a significant impact on my

ambitions on my career. At the beginning I was interested in Civil as well as Environmental

Engineering. However through my research I was able to gain insight on what these

professions actually do and I am looking forward to becoming a part of the fields of studies

to contribute my part to the world. Another thing that impacted me was just what I wanted

to do after I earned my degrees. Through research I saw many of these green advances are

still out of reach to lower income families, whose households generally are outdated and

not as efficient as the high income households. That is why my focus shifted to providing

these families more accessible technologies and services to help reduce pollution for all

areas no matter the income through programs, and looking at ways to make this technology

cheaper.

This project has benefitted me as if has made me more aware of the technological

advancements being made but also the improvement that can be made in terms of costs. I

have seen engineering not only as a career but as a profession that can help the world. This
project has personally made me more organized, confident, and more mature in terms of

diction whether that is on my research paper or my presentation.

Id like to thank you for taking the time to assess my Graduation Project, from the Paper, to

the SLE, and to the Presentation.

Sincerely,

Adan Guerrero
