Zeng Fanzhi - Paintings, Drawings, and Two Sculptures

Gagosian Gallery (NY) 2017 ISBN 9781938748325 Acqn 27466
Hb 32x27cm 158pp 70col ills 81.25

Zeng is at the forefront of a generation of Chinese artists who have achieved national and
international prominence in the wake of the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s. Over the past three
decades he has probed the place of the unconscious in the construction of human experience
while reflecting on the collective national psyche in the face of broad and accelerated change. In
his formative years, he was particularly inspired by the works of German Expressionism and
French Romanticism, in which he found precedents for exploring the psychology of selfhood in
the throes of societal flux.

Recent paintings include large-scale nocturnal landscapes, some populated by anonymous

figures or identifiable historical subjects; and smaller, more abstract canvases in which schematic
black branches stand out in sharp relief against backgrounds of sweeping horizontal
brushstrokes. In the landscape paintings, traditional techniques blend seamlessly with modern
abstraction: in an idiosyncratic method originally adopted out of necessity due to injury, Zeng
sometimes works with multiple brushes in each hand, undermining his own precision through a
process that has become a continuous cycle of creation and destruction. The abstract
landscape paintings evolve as if autonomously through the rhythmic processual vitality with
which Zeng approaches his persistent motifs. Invoking a lineage beginning with Song Dynasty
depictions of idyllic, imaginary vistas rendered in calligraphic strokes, he envisages vast scenes
of bleak terrains spontaneously lit with bright pinks and blues, and eclipsed by jagged black
branches, graphic in their concise and sinister silhouettes.

If all the ways I have been along were marked on a map and joined up with a line, it might
represent a Minotaur. Pablo Picasso

Gagosian, in partnership with the artists grandson, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, is pleased to present
Picasso: Minotaurs and Matadors, curated by Sir John Richardson. The exhibition examines the
intersection of Picasso's bullfighting imagery with his mythological and biographical compositions
of the 1930s. Including works dating from 1889 to 1971, this career-long survey traces Picassos
engagement with the ancient rituals and narratives of his native Mediterranean.

Comprised of paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, ceramics, and a home movie Picasso made
in 1929, Picasso: Minotaurs and Matadors is presented in an innovative installation designed by
the Stirling Prize-winning architecture firm Caruso St. John, and is accompanied by a fully
illustrated catalogue with essays by Richardson, noted Picasso scholars Michael FitzGerald and
Gertje Utley, and historian of Greek art and archaeology Clemente Marconi.

My Vibe is New Yorkbased poet and writer Jeremy Siglers collection of diaristic tales by an only
partly sympathetic struggling poet who flirts withand often fails atcreating romance and
playful distractions in his otherwise boring life. The tales are self-deprecating, awkward, nostalgic
and at times perverse, but they retain warmth, honesty, whimsy, charm and are often wickedly
funny. I love pseudoscience. I love it. Next time I read my work in public, Im gonna cut out big
cardboard letters and paint them red. Im gonna prop them up behind me: T-E-D.
Pseudoscientists get all the fans. They get all the love letters. For their viral youtubes of levitating
beer cans. The Pseudos get all the attention. They go viral. Unlike poets.

Jeremys voice is one you cant deny; its crisp, clever and sometimes creepy. Its like finding
someones old journals, their identity revealed bit by bit, confession by confession. Abbi
Jacobson, Broad City

Jeremy Sigler (born 1968) is a poet, critic and teacher living in Brooklyn, New York. Sigler has

OBrienthe prolific writer, editor, creative director and New York staplein a 1990 article for

With prescience and panache, OBrien wrote on such diverse topics as advertising in Japan, the
Buy American campaign, Burger King, tobacco and alcohol ads, condoms, Max Headroom,
computer games, the relationship between advertising and art, and much more. Now collected in

Edda Renouf - Visible Sounds

Annely Juda Fine Art 2017 ISBN 9781904621782 Acqn 27399
Pb 22x25cm 40pp 22col ills 15

important and recurrent themes in my art are those of time and music or sound. My art works
are a record of the days, weeks, months and seasons when they were created, and thus act as a
journal of my working process; and the theme of sound, points to the idea of a hidden presence of
wave structures in our universe. - Edda Renouf

Working since the 1970s, Renouf has developed a unique method of revealing certain qualities
of the linen canvas by removing specific threads according to the existing movement of the
weave. She brushes on thin glazes and then sands the surface, making visible the life within the
linen.

Works in this exhibition mark a new direction for the artist in unusually long and narrow vertical
paintings made of several panels: a quadriptych, two triptychs and a diptych. Renouf found that
the vertical paintings could be related to through ones body. When standing before the artwork
my eyes were then led to read up and down the painting giving me a sense of movement.
Since Renouf identifies sounds with movement, titles of the paintings combine sounds with the
natural elements.

artist and architect. Early paintings were figurative, however, an early interest in contrasting light
and shade can be seen. Figuration was gradually abandoned by Michaeledes through abstract
processes and gave way to juxtapositions of colour and line. His style grew more abstract over
time, and finally he abandoned the use of paint entirely, working with just canvas and wood.

Sigrid Holmwood - The Peasants Are Revolting

Annely Juda Fine Art 2017 ISBN 9781904621812 Acqn 27525
Pb 25x22cm 48pp 37col ills 15

Sigrid Holmwood's work focuses on the ways in which the hand-making of materials generates
meaning and resists the alienation of industrialised life. Holmwood uses the figure of the peasant
- in her paintings but also through an adopted persona - as a means to highlight the links between
the exclusion of European peasant culture and the suppression of indigenous pigment making
technologies and practices through Western modernity and colonialism.

Works in this exhibition stem from Holmwoods research for the construction of a pigment garden
in Almera, Spain, at the arts-led field research centre Joya: arte + ecologa. The cochineal insect
(found to be infecting cacti in the region) produces a crimson dye and was, during the colonial
era, imported from Mexico to Spain. Holmwood uses this pigment in these paintings, along with a
version of Mayan blue; a remarkably stable pigment that is believed to have been invented by the
Mayans around the year 700. The practice of making the pigment was subsequently lost in the
wake of colonialism and has only recently been re-discovered through archaeology and analytical
chemistry. Holmwood has re-adapted and hybridised the technology by making Mayan blue from
the European indigo-producing plant, woad.

Prunella Clough
Annely Juda Fine Art 2017 ISBN 9781904621805 Acqn 27526
Pb 22x25cm 64pp 45col ills 22.50

Prunella Clough is widely appreciated as one of the most significant British artists of the post-war
period. Her work consists of paintings, collages, drawings and reliefs which demonstrate the
characteristic development of her work through her various influences notably cubism and
European abstraction. In this exhibition, we will be showing works from the 1940s right up to
those made the year before her death in 1999; figurative still lifes to abstract colour works,
collages, oil paintings and works on paper, reflecting the huge variety and richness of Prunella
Cloughs life and work.

Clough explored a range of themes and subjects during her long career. At the heart of her
practice was exploration; either through the subject or studio based experimentation. Cloughs
early work was very much based on observation; she made studies of fisherman and fishing
ports, lorry drivers in their cabs and weavers among the looms in the textile mills. These paintings
are rendered in muted tones and colours, often reflecting the industrial nature of the settings.

Edited by Magdalena Malm, this volume articulates the why and how of curating art projects that
gain their meaning in relation to a surrounding context, or which require a specific structure in
order to play out. In such practice, curatorial considerations are interwoven with production, and
the intentions of artists and curators are foremost, rather than institutional structures. With
contributions by Grgory Castra, Claire Doherty, Raimundas Malaauskas, Jessica Segerlund,
and more, the texts and conversations offered here reflect on how these curatorial methodologies
not only situate works in different places, but also transfer curatorial methods into other fields.

This selection of eight paintings by Vincent van Gogh attests to the modernity he brought to the
traditional genres of portraiture, still life, and landscape. In addition, the evolution of his
relationship with colour and composition is clearly evident, which in turn provides insight into the
artists temperament. Van Goghs characteristic manner of expression combines both
strangeness and sincerity, calm and exaltation, to produce an usual perspective that has since
resonated through generations of artists. Six of the canvases come from the collection of Swiss
industrialist and lifelong art lover, Emil Georg Bhrle. With analyses by two Van Gogh scholars,
David Misteli and Alex Weintraub.

Fondation Vincent Van Gogh 2017 ISBN 9791094966051 Acqn 27412
Pb 21x30cm 70pp 35ills 17.50

Though his assemblages of related images or composite and quirky objects, Thibault Franc
attempts to keep the world in one piece with humour. His delight in misappropriating forms is not
indulged at random, but is consciously anchored in the Provenal region and around its local
mythologies: from Roman legions to Van Gogh, passing via the mythical Tarasque dragon, the
famous Arlsienne women, and tourism and its boutiques of goodies, inescapable in a city
devoted to heritage and the arts.

With irony, Thibault Franc captures, in a few strokes, this energy of the whimsical coupled with
the trivial. He invites us to take the fragments of a world simultaneously old and new, on the
banks of the Rhne, and turn them into colour.

stark contrasts that effectively conveys the palpable unease lingering in our environment. The
cities of Venice, Porto, Paris, and Haifa provide the stage for uncanny combinations. Wertmans

Swedish artist Gunnel Wahlstrand (b. 1974) creates extraordinary large-scale ink wash paintings
featuring monumental landscapes, compelling portraits and serene interiors with intriguing
compositions. The point of departure for Wahlstrands work was a box of family photographs, the
only connection that she had to her father while growing up. To fill the silence surrounding his life
and disappearance, she began to use these photographs: enlarging the image, delving into every
detail and using her imagination to complete any information that is lacking or obscured. Each
work takes months to complete, as the ink washes are applied in successive layers, gradually
filling the white paper through a process that the artist likens to a slowly developing photograph.
