The purpose of this course is to provide students with a theoretical understanding of physical,
cognitive, social, and emotional development of children from infancy through school age. In addition,
instruction covers: child health, safety and nutrition; child guidance techniques; and developmentally
appropriate curriculum. Students plan and present educational materials and activities related to
language development, math, science, music, art, and motor development. This course meets the
University of California g elective requirement. This course is articulated with Cuyamaca Community
College/Grossmont Community College. Prerequisite: none
BASIC SKILLS:
As part of the instruction, this course reinforces and applies basic skills in reading, writing, speaking,
listening and mathematics in the context of a career. Instructional strategies used in this course also
assist students to: think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and develop the ability to learn and
reason. Students are given opportunities to demonstrate personal qualities including individual
responsibility, self-confidence, self-management and teamwork.
Growth and development of the infant and young child - The Student
Describes the developmental stages of infants and toddlers.
Identifies stages of play and importance of play for young children.
Describes and understands the physical development of children 2-5 years old and/or infants.
Lists the social development stages of children 2-5 years old and/or infants.
Identifies ways to help children 2-5 years old and/or infants develop sound emotional health.
Lists the stages of intellectual development of children 2-5 years old and/or infants.
Identifies the sequence of language acquisition and development of children 2-5 years old and/or infants.
Identifies the theorists responsible for understanding the development of young children.
Examines the environmental factors which influence the development of children 2-5 years old and/or infants.
Determines the needs of exceptional children, including special family situations.
Identifies the social, emotional, physical and intellectual stages of development of the school-age child.
