LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 7 Time: 3:30pm Date: 07/06/2017 Students Prior Knowledge:

Students should have knowledge of how to

Learning Area: Mathematics calculate measures of central tendency for a
set of data

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum Students should have basic computer skills
Statistics and Probability / Data Representation and Students should be familiar with spreadsheets,
Interpretation: Describe and interpret data displays using Piktochart and Padlet
median, mean and range (ACMSP172)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical Personal and Intercultural
competence creative thinking behaviour Social understanding
competence
Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Asia and Australias engagement with Asia Sustainability
histories and cultures
Proficiencies: Fluency; Reasoning
Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

Understand how outliers and changes to a set of data can influence the mean, median and mode
Compare two sets of data and make conclusions based on those comparisons
Create a visual representation of comparisons between data sets

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

Create webquest for students Screencast videos can help students with
Create and test all links to external sites and visual impairments and help functions for the
applications applications can help hearing impaired
Prepare Kahoot quiz and Padlet students.
Prepare screencast videos Group work encourages collaboration and
helping peers for higher achieving students
Teacher can monitor class while students are
working independently and provide assistance
where required
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
Students to navigate to http://ictdaverob.weebly.com/ using a web
browser and go to Small Group Activity -> Using Mean Median and
0:05
Mode using the menu. Kahoot.
Kahoot quiz (students can follow the link on the page to access) to
assess prior knowledge of mean, median and mode

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Plop It!
Following on from the Kahoot quiz, explain to students that data sets
can change and this might affect the mean, median and mode. Google Forms
0:10 Students are to follow the links for task 1 to use the interactive graph
and answer the questions on the google form Screencast-o-matic
video

Students to from groups and download some real-world data from the ABS Census at School
0:02 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census at School website. This gives
the students the opportunity to work with data that has some meaning Screencast-o-matic
and context in the real world. Video

Student groups are to import downloaded data into a Google Sheets Google Sheets
0:05 spreadsheet and to add a column and calculate the age of the
students in the data set and then calculate the mean, median and Screencast-o-matic
mode of each column of data video

Student groups are to compare the mean, median and mode of the
Google Sheets
data they downloaded with a random sample of Western Australian
0:10 Year 7 students provided in a spreadsheet. Students are to describe
similarities and differences they observed and form conclusions about
what they observe.

Student groups are to create a visual representation of their

observations and conclusions using Piktochart and post it on to a Piktochart

0:13
Padlet.
Padlet
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

If Piktochart not completed at end of lesson, groups to submit it to the

Padlet on the Weebly before the next lesson
0:05
Discuss results posted with class asking groups to justify why they
chose to use mean, median and mode

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

Formative Assessment: Google Forms Exploring Mean, Median and

Mode worksheet using Plop It! Learning outcome 1, 2, 3
Summative Assessment: Piktochart submitted on Padlet Learning
outcomes 1, 2, 3
Informal Assessment: Observing students throughout class and how
they work together in groups Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3
