Introduction to DS-License Server RLM (Recovery License Model)

The DS-License Server RLM is a Service or Daemon that validates the license quotas of
compressed data for registered DS-Systems and BLM Archivers. It is designed to be running
constantly and must always be accessible via TCP/IP connection from the relevant installations of
DS-System and BLM Archiver in order for these products to authenticate their licenses. Failover
can be provided for a period of time by an Emergency DS-License Server RLM (emergency USB
DS-Key), in case of problems with the Primary DS-License Server or connectivity between the DS-
License Server RLM and DS-System or BLM Archiver.

Asigra DS-License Server RLM is designed to increase your capacity flexibility with DS-System
and BLM storage license capacities. The DS-License Server RLM provides a total licensed
capacity for DS-Systems as well as for BLM Archivers, which can then be split by the DS-License
Server RLM administrator to multiple DS-Systems and BLM Archivers, depending on the type of
license purchased and the products purchased. DS-License Server RLM must be able to connect

1. Installation

to the Asigra License Server periodically via port 4417. The connection information for the Asigra
License Server is found in the configuration of the USB Key.

The DS-License Server RLM software product allows running of multiple DS-Systems and BLM
Archivers from a DS-License Server RLM by managing only one license. Any updates to the RLM
license are retrieved by the DS-License Server RLM directly from the Asigra License Server. It is
able to authenticate multiple DS-Systems and BLM Archivers installed in one domain in the same
geographical location or in different geographical locations. The total number of DS-Systems and
BLM Archivers available are free of charge, but pre-configured in advance by Asigra Head Office,
and may only be changed by Asigra Head Office. The DS-License Server RLM retains logs and
history which can be printed or exported to a file.

Storage capacity allocation in one domain or company can be adjusted by the domain
administrator. Transfer of Terabyte capacity between License Servers is not possible. All
Emergency DS-License server RLM license allocations for individual DS-Systems and BLM
Archivers come from the Production License Server. Asigra License Server controls all license
operations (updating license capacity, license tools, etc.) and License validations worldwide.

The DS-License Server RLM can be installed on 64-bit Operating Systems (Windows or Linux)
where it will run as a 32-bit application.

The DS-License Server RLM is designed to increase your flexibility with DS-System and BLM
storage license amounts.
You only need to purchase the recovery license that works with the DS-
License Server RLM.
You will receive a HASP USB Key from Asigra that must always be plugged
into the machine running the DS-License Server RLM.
Once the DS-License Server RLM is running, you can configure it to work with
your DS-Systems and BLM Archivers.
Service / Daemon (DS-License Server RLM) is designed to be running
constantly (24/7/365).
Hardware requirements are minimal, but the server / daemon must be on a
reliable machine and have Internet access to validate with the Asigra License
Server.
The DS-License Server RLM retains logs and history.
All log tables can be printed / exported to file.

The DS-License Server RLM can be installed on Windows or Linux platforms.

See: 1.1 Hardware and Software Requirements on page 9
See: 1.2 Installing the DS-License Server RLM on page 10

Emergency DS-License Server RLM

Each Production DS-License Server RLM will also come with a second emergency HASP USB
Key. This allows you to set up and configure an Emergency DS-License Server RLM: a second,
alternate server that runs in parallel with the Production DS-License Server RLM and serves as a
backup if DS-Systems and BLM Archivers cannot connect with the Production DS-License Server
RLM.
Install the Emergency DS-License Server RLM in the same manner as the
Production DS-License Server RLM.

1. Installation

On each DS-System and BLM Archiver, input both the Production License
Server and Emergency License Server (Setup Menu > License Server).

The only configuration required on the Emergency DS-License Server RLM is to register with the
Production DS-License Server RLM. All license allocations for individual DS-Systems and BLM
Archivers come from the Production License Server. For instructions, see 2.2.3 Emergency DS-
License Server RLM Configurations on page 26.

1.1 Hardware and Software Requirements

The target installation computer must be networked with all the DS-Systems and BLM Archivers
that will use it as their DS-License Server RLM.
You must purchase the storage capacity license that works with the DS-
License Server RLM.
You will receive a HASP USB Key from Asigra that must always be plugged
into the machine running the DS-License Server RLM. Plug the HASP USB
Key into the target installation machine.
Note: All required HASP drivers are installed with the DS-License Server RLM and a service/
daemon will run constantly.
The machine that runs the DS-License Server RLM does not require the
fastest or newest hardware, however it must be reliable for 24 hours / 7
days constant uptime.
The machine that runs the DS-License Server RLM must have an Internet
connection to be able to authenticate with the Asigra License Server.

your configurations. Each notification event will trigger a separate SNMP trap.

For more information on SNMP see your Operating System Help.

- Use the SNMP Tab to configure DS-License Server RLM to work with SNMP to send
traps. (You need to have SNMP management software installed if you wish to receive
and handle the trap information).
- New / Modify: Opens the SNMP Destination Info screen for you to add an SNMP trap
destination to the list. The same trap(s) are sent to each item in the destination list.
F1 Help: See SNMP Destination Info on page 61.
- SNMP heartbeat trap interval: If you configure a time, DS-License Server RLM will
send a special trap as a heartbeat for monitoring at the selected interval.

Note: Load the asigra.mib file (found in the software installation directory) with your SNMP
software to receive the traps sent by DS-License Server RLM. For more information, see
the SNMP Notification Knowledge Base article in the DS-Client User Guide.

2.2.2 DS-License Server RLM Initialization

The DS-License Server RLM obtains its license capacity from the Asigra License Server and
HASP USB Key. You must ensure this installation can connect via TCP/IP (Internet connection) to
the Asigra License Server at all times.
1. Licenses menu > RLS Initialization. The DS-License Server RLM Configuration
screen appears.

F1 Help: See DS-License Server RLM Configuration on page 52.

2. The radio button at the top of the screen will indicate if this is a Production License.
All the information in this screen is embedded on the HASP USB key you receive from
Asigra that must be plugged into a USB port visible to the DS-License Server RLM.
Asigra License Server: This is the TCP/IP address of the master Asigra
License Server. This DS-License Server must always be able to connect via
TCP/IP to this address to validate its license with Asigra.
TCP Port: The default is 4417. Do not change this unless you have specific
requirement to do so.
Key ID: Each HASP USB key has a unique ID.
License ID: Each license has a unique ID.

2. Using DS-License Server RLM

2.2.3 Emergency DS-License Server RLM Configurations

With each Production License, you will receive a companion Emergency License that you should
configure for fail-over purposes (in case the DS-Systems / BLM Archivers fail to connect to the
Production DS-License Server RLM). You may be able to purchase additional Emergency Keys
from Asigra if your environment requires them (e.g. if you have multiple data centers and need an
Emergency License Server for each one).
The Emergency DS-License Server RLM is installed and configured in the same way as a
Production DS-License Server RLM (see 1.2 Installing the DS-License Server RLM on page 10).
Once the Emergency License server is running, you can include it in the License Server
configurations of each DS-System and BLM Archiver.
The Emergency License is exactly the same as the Production License, with an additional
Emergency Counter that increases when fail-over authentication is required. You must register the
Emergency License Server with the Production License Server before it can accept fail-over
connections.
Once registered, the Emergency License Server obtains all the information
from the Production License Server. No further configuration is required on
the Emergency License Server.
Once a fail-over is detected, the Emergency Count increases by 1 in the
Emergency Recovery License (on the HASP USB Key).
A fail-over Emergency Count is valid for one (1) day (24 hours) from the
moment it is logged. This means DS-Systems and BLM Archivers can
authenticate with the Emergency License Server for 24 hours before the
Emergency Count increases again.
1. Run the DS-License Server RLM GUI: Server menu > Connect.
2. The Connect to DS-License Server RLM screen appears. Enter the address of the
Emergency DS-License Server RLM.
3. Click Connect. An Emergency License Server is indicated as such in the main GUI
Window.

Enter the IP address of the Production DS-License Server RLM and click
Update.
5. Once registered with a Production License Server, the Emergency License Server will
update itself with the latest license settings at the specified verification interval (or on
demand from this screen).

IMPORTANT NOTE: For Emergency DS-License Server RLMs, the only configuration you
perform is to enter the address of its Production DS-License Server RLM.

In the main GUI window, take note of the following differences for Emergency License servers:
The number of individual licenses (StandAlone, N+1, etc.) comes from the
Production License Server, therefore there is no maximum number (each will
usually show 100% in the display, even though more can be added).
The Current Amount Used is only adjusted when this Emergency License
Server receives fail-over verification from DS-Systems or BLM Archivers.
The Current Amount Allocated is automatically adjusted, depending on the
DS-Systems and BLM Archivers that have been assigned to this Emergency
License Server. (Assigning a license to use this Emergency License Server is
done on the Production License Server.)

2. Using DS-License Server RLM

2.2.4 Viewing the list of Emergency License Servers

In most cases, there will only be one Emergency License Server for each Production License
Server. Some service providers may require an additional Emergency License Server (for
example: if they have more than one data center), each requiring an Emergency HASP license
USB Key from Asigra.
From the Production DS-License Server RLM, you can view all its Emergency License Servers:

1. Licenses menu > Emergency Server. The Emergency License Server screen
appears. All the Emergency License Servers that have connected to this Production
License Server and been verified are listed here.

F1 Help: See Emergency License Server on page 57.

2. Refer to the F1 Help for a description of the button functions.

TIP: This screen is best for viewing or editing registered Emergency License Servers. Although
you can add new Emergency License Servers to the list, you still need to register that
Emergency License Server with this Production License Server (see: 2.2.3 Emergency
DS-License Server RLM Configurations on page 26). Registering an Emergency License
Server will automatically fill this screen with the corresponding entry.
