Engineering FINAL Project Guidelines: Build a Mars

Habitat

Your class is going to build ONE habitat to compete with the other classes
that will meet the following requirements: (this is your PROBLEM)

1. It must be 1/5 the size of the actual habitat

2. It uses alternative energy to power any systems you install
3. It stays the coolest when sitting out in the sun on a hot day, it stays
warm at night when the sun goes down on Mars.

There is a minimum participation requirement. You must attend class EVERY

DAY there are no excused absences. Please reschedule any appointments and
get in on time if you are consistently missing because of your tardiness. I am
assigning daily participation grades, starting at a C, based on the following:

To receive a(n): You must do: And record:

C+ (8 points) Come and listen to The information
Just being there your team that was developed
by your team
B+ (9 points) Come and The work that you

Please keep in mind that you can also lose points for the usual
infractionskeep on task and work hard while we are here to get all of your
class credit! It will add up to 70 points of your total final grade.

DAILY PROGRESS:
Every day, we have to make massive strides to ensure that the house will be
completed by the end of the exam period. In order to make this happen, we will
follow a schedule.
1. To start class, the project manager will quickly review and assign tasks
for the day to each team.
2. Teams will break and begin working on their assigned tasks for the day.
3. We will stop 10 minutes before the end of class to report back to
everyone on the progress the teams have made for the day. In the event
that any individual team member has a way to help another team, they
can switch teams or they can contribute new ideas to move the other
teams forward.

GOALS: (to be met as quickly as possible!!!)

1. By the end of class today, you must select your Project Manager. This
person is going to be in charge of managing all of the teams, so please
consider the capabilities of the individual to motivate the other members
of the class. They will also help me assign daily grades based on your
participation.
2. Research is due FRIDAY from EACH PERSON. The purposed of your
research is to identify one solution to the project requirements. Please
complete it in your notebook and come prepared to class to use it to
start to brainstorm your part of the house design.
3. Teams will form based on the research brought back by individual
students. The purpose of teams is to use individual interest and
strengths to maximize productivity during class time and move the
project forward. Teams will be asked to produce a solution to one of
each of the following issues in order to complete the house:
a. The design of the habitat.
b. The materials for the habitat.
c. The systems developed to run the habitat:
i. Thermal
ii. Electrical
iii. Fluid
iv. COMMUNICATION
d. The power for the habitat.
4. The class will build the habitat together work must start by Monday to
ensure there is enough time to complete the habitat before testing it on
Friday.
5. Data will be collected using the temperature probes and analyzed by a
team in order to determine the success of the habitat design. It will also
test the success of the communication system.
6. The final presentation during your final exam period will be a combined
effort of the entire class. The results will be used to determine which
class builds the best house as well as other factors, including how well
the class worked together, the success of the individual systems within
the house, and how complete the final analyses of each part of the
design are completed.
