1 A column 300mmx300mm carries an ultimate imposed load of 1040kN and ultimate dead load of
508.9kN. The safe bearing pressure is 150kN/m2. If the column resists on the footing whose weight is
80kN. Design a square base to resist the load. Use C35 concrete and T16 reinforcement, 50mm bottom
cover on blinding and 75mm end cover.

4 (a) Explain briefly the difference between shallow and deep foundations. Give one example for a shallow
foundation and one example for a deep foundation.
(b) With the aid of neat sketches describe three formations of pressure distribution across a base of a pad
footing. (Assume linear distribution of bearing pressure).
(b) A pad footing in the figure below is acted upon by direct force of 2000kN and moment of magnitude
600kNm. If the length of the footing L = 3m and width, B = 2.0m.
What is the pressure acting along AB and CD?

5.A footing is required to resist a characteristic axial dead load of 1000kN and imposed load of 350kN from a
400mm square column. The safe bearing pressure on the soil is 200kN/m2, fcu = 25N/mm2 and fy = 425N/mm2.
Assuming the footing is 150kN in weight, the effective depth for longitudinal and transverse reinforcement is
taken as 520mm and the diameter of the reinforcing steel is 20mm, find:
(i) design axial load for both limit states.
(ii) the size of the base ( which is also square).
(iii) the thickness of the footing to the nearest hundred mm and the net upward pressure.
(iv) the moment at the critical section.
(v) the amount of the bending reinforcement.

6.A square pad foundation is required to resist axial load of 1000kN including weight of pad from a 400 400
mm column. The safe bearing pressure of the soil is 250kN/m2.
(a) Estimate the required area of pad
(b) Calculate the bending moment at the critical section (face column).
(c) Estimate the area of steel reinforcement if the effective depth of reinforcement is 400mm.
Characteristics strength of material used: concrete grade 30, fcu = 30N/mm2 and mild steel, fy =
460N/mm2.
7.A 300 300 mm column carries an ultimate load of 700kN dead load and 1200kN imposed load. It is founded
on a soil with an allowable bearing pressure of 200kN/m2. The load due to ground slab and weight of foundation
above the soil is 10kN/m2.
(a) what is the required area (B D) of the footing.
(b) Calculate the amount of reinforcement required in the footing if fcu = 30N/mm2 and fy = 460N/mm2.
(c) Check for punching shear.

sides.

9 A reinforced concrete column transmits a total axial load of 1315kN to a footing slab of 60kN estimated
weight. Assuming the ground to have a safe bearing of 220kN; calculate the suitable dimensions in plan,
