CVEN90017 Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings

Workshop 1 (2016)
Thursday 24/3, 4:15pm-5:15pm (D207)
Thursday 21/4, 4:15pm-5:15pm (D207)

Organisation into groups

The class is to be divided into groups of 3 to 4 students for this exercise.

Equivalent Static Analysis, AS1170.4-2007

A 6-storey office building is to be designed in Melbourne with the composite framing
shown below. The columns are concrete-filled square hollow sections, while the
beams are UBs that are composite with a 120 mm reinforced concrete slab that is
itself composite with profiled metal sheeting such as bondek. The connections
between the beams and columns are designed to be rigid for all of the frames on grid-
lines A to E, and on grid-lines 1 to 5.

Part a) Determine the ultimate strength design earthquake forces acting on the
moment-resisting frame along grid-line 2 using the equivalent static analysis
procedure in Section 6 of AS1170.4-2007. Refer to Clauses, Tables etc from
AS1170.4 as appropriate in your calculations.

The following assumptions should be made:

The building has an importance level of 2 in accordance with the Building
Code of Australia (see Table B1.2B below to determine the required annual
probability of exceedance).
The columns are assumed to be fixed at the base due to an assumed rigid
perimeter basement wall.
The site sub-soil class is De, soft or deep soil.
The frames are ordinary moment-resisting composite frames with limited
ductility.
The floor system is a composite one using profiled metal sheeting. The
permanent load per unit area (including self-weight) is 4.5 kPa at the roof level
and 4.9 kPa for the floors at levels 1 to 5. The imposed load per unit area is 1.5
kPa at the roof, and 3 kPa at levels 1 to 5.
A medium density faade is used with a load per unit surface area of 1.0 kPa.
There is a parapet at the roof level of 1.5 metres in height.

AS1170.0 and 1170.1 should be consulted as appropriate. For example, the

robustness clause 6.2.2 of AS/NZS 1170.0:2002 must be satisfied.

Students should be aware that the columns in grid-line 2 would need to be designed
for biaxial bending since consideration would need to be given to 100% of the actions
due to design level earthquake forces in the plane of the frame and 30% of the actions
due to design level earthquake forces acting on perpendicular frames. This is in
accordance with Section 5.4.2.1 of AS1170.4. However, calculations for the
perpendicular direction are not required in this assignment.

Accidental torsion should be considered in accordance with Sect 6.6 in AS1170.4.

Part b) The frame member sizes have been determined with consideration given to
all of the appropriate load combinations in AS1170.0. A linear elastic Space Gass
analysis has been performed with the ELF loads applied to the frame on gridline 2.
The displacements in mm (from the linear analysis) at the different floor levels are
given below. Does the maximum drift comply with the limit set in AS1170.4?

L1 = 24.0, L2 = 43.1, L3 = 60.5, L4 = 75.0, L5 = 82.2, L6 = 89.0 (L = Level)
