Unit 5 Responding to a Professional Brief

Below is a screen shot of the first assignment brief I will evidence, Unit 54 assignment 3, I
was not able to retrieve the brief for Unit 54 Assignment 3 but this is what the brief would
look exactly like.

In this assignment I had to design several graphics for The Pixels band who are a Manchester
based band that are looking for an A3 band advertisement poster, a CD Cover case and a
new logo for the band.
Many specific requirement have been given out which I will talk about below.
Negotiating the Brief:
Consultation with the Client:

After receiving the brief for this assignment, I had a Client

meeting with the client where I was given all the demands
and requirements of the designs and additional
information about the designs, which I need to follow.
This client meeting is a list of client needs which I need to
follow in order for the final designs to meet the client
needs and to be exactly to how demanded on the
assignment brief.
I met all the requirements from this client meeting and
met all the clients needs listed on the client-meeting list; I
will show some examples of me meeting the clientsneeds.
Amendments / Edits:
Not just for this assignment 3 but also for every assignment we produce a product such as
these graphics we are required to create a software diary. In these software diaries, I show
everything what I am doing when creating my product so that I could go back later to do the
exact same thing or to change something.
In addition, if other people wanted to create the same product, which I had created, they
can read this software diary and follow the steps to produce the exact same thing.
Below is the first page of my software diary and then screen shot below of the rest of the
pages.
Unit 54 Assignment 3 Software Diary

A3 Poster:
I will start my ~A3 poster by creating the canvas size in Photoshop at the correct size,
29.7cm by 42.0cm.
To create the background for my A3 poster I will first import the background image and add
a blur effect on to it after.
I go to File>import and select my file.
Now I will resize the image to make it fits perfectly to the A3 canvas size.
Now it is time to add the blur effect. I go to Filter>Blur and select a Blur effect. This is how
my background for my poster looks now.

Now I will add The Pixels band logo to my A3 poster.

File>import and select my logo .PNG file.
Once imported I resize the logo to an appropriate size by pressing c-T to free transform the
logo.
I will place the logo in the top centre of the A3 poster for The Pixels.
Feedback from Peers / Questionnaires:
A questionnaire was not required for this specific assignment 3.
Legal & Ethical:
Another section of this assignment brief I covered (Unit 54 Assignment 3) which I will show
evidence of doing is the Legal and Ethical document, which is Task 5 on the assignment
brief, the final task of the assignment.
I had to type up a Legal and Ethical document in this Unit 54 Assignment 3 because when
producing graphics and something, which will be broadcasted in any aspects of the media
there are many copyright, laws which the product / design cannot break.
Below is the Legal and Ethical document I typed up for the assignment to show and provide
evidence that I did type up and provide a Legal and Ethical document in this assignment.
Legal and Ethical Considerations

Copy Right Law

Producers of a Video Advert need to know the rules against the Copyright laws. As Video Advert have the uses
of Text, Graphics, Audio, Video and Animation and many different softwares and program being used in the
making so it would be very helpful knowing the Video Advert copyright laws as the is a lot of areas you could
fall into copyright at.

The Copyright law originated in the united kingdom in 1988 covering intellectual right and the work which it
applied to. The law gives the creators production of;

Films
Broadcasts, films and video productions.
Published Editions
Magazines and papers.
Artistic work
Photography, sculptures, drawings and paintings
Drama productions
Dances and scripted plays
Literacy and writings
Computer programs, song lyrics, Scripts, articles and leaflets.
Sound recordings and musicals
Musicals and Literacy that has been recorded.

The right to cover their products from copying, editing, publishing, lending and giving out to the public and
also selling. Most people who create their Video Advert are registered as an author of their product so they
can then be protected by the International Conventions which applies in most countries and which is subjected
to national law.

People are still allowed to publish something very similar and based around the same topic as long as they do
not directly copy any of the following from your piece of work;

Titles.
Sentences / parts of Text.
Logos (even if in different colours).
In some cases there are Fair Dealing terms which allows you to almost commit copy right but this usually
occurs for personal and educational use. These are the acts which copyright is allowed in;

Research and study purposes.

Performance and lending out for educational use.
New reporting and Criticism.
Copies and lending to and from Libraries
Court proceedings and parliamentary purposes.

Ethical

When partaking in any kind of Video Advert you need to be aware of the phrases and topic you talk
about as it could people from different backgrounds for example. The Ethical Considerations means
that in any type of Video Advert created there can be no remarks of discrimination against people
Race, Religion, Sexuality and Gender. Every company making a Video Advert knows about the ethical
considerations but sometimes companies try and push these boundaries, not writing directly at one
Race or Disability for example but still quite discriminating in some ways.
If companies break the Ethical consideration rules this will not just give the specific company a bad
reputation, the people which the article is discriminating will stand up and speak out, often causing
rallies and protests etc. The worst things that have happened when a Video Advert company has
broken the ethical considerations law is the authors / writers of the article or product will be targeted
with hate offenses, which also gets a lot of Media attention.
One place people like to avoid these rules is on the internet.

On the web you can use other peoples music / videos for example if they are not copyrighted, many
people make non copyrighted music for other peoples use across the web but if somebody does have
copyright over there video which are uploaded onto the web then you cannot use them and the
creator could potentially sue you. Same goes to music as well many music artists have a VEVO channel
if you illegally download the video that is classed as copyright, often if you try and illegally download a
VEVO Music video it will not let you because the video has harsh copyright issues to it.

All TV programmes that are streaming on todays TV have copyright issues, similar to everything else
in the media platform. This is also where piracy comes in to the topic because people either record
their TV programmes with a DVR player or they illegally download them like with music. This is also
very popular with films too. People illegally record or download them to use for personal use or to sell
on illegally.
If you get caught pirating TV programmes you can get in a lot of trouble.
In advertising, companies or other organizations may use symbols, slogans, sounds, or other unique
features in order to get an identity for their products. These methods of presenting brand name
recognition are called trademarks. The three levels of trademarking are registered trademarks, service
marks, and unregistered trademarks. Service marks are trademarked services as opposed to
trademarked products.

Unregistered trademarks are protected under a number of cases. Fully registered trademarks are registered
with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In regards to levels, there are also types of trademarks
which are registered, trademarks, service marks, collective marks, and certification marks.
Below is a screen shot of the first assignment brief I will evidence, Unit 54 assignment 3, I
was not able to retrieve the brief for Unit 54 Assignment 3 but this is what the brief would
look exactly like.

In this assignment, the task was to create all the drawn graphics I created form Unit 78
Assignment 2 and digitally produce in them in softwares such as Photoshop.
Consulting with the Client:
In this Unit / Assignment there wasnt an actual Client meeting like in Unit 54 but below I
will show a screen shot of the clients needs for this assignment which was shown in my
proposal in the assignment 2 of this Unit.

Amendments / Edits:
Not just for this assignment 3 but also for every assignment we produce a product such as

Main character

I began this creating my main character by imported an image of Mario in to Photoshop to

now change and edit in to Galip the super Mario brothers cousin.
My goals with this graphic is to change the colours and the face of this but keep the same
character build, I began this by using the select tool to select the character clothing, going to
image, adjustments, hue/saturation and changing the colour of the characters top, pants
and hat to a dark grey/light black colour.

Now for other pieces of clothing, like the characters shoes and belt I did the exact same
thing going to image, adjustments, hue/saturation but this time changing the colours of
these pieces of clothing to a dark emerald green kind of colour.

For the face of my character I used the hue/saturation tool to change the hair to a light
brown colours and I kept the eyes the same colour. Now to get rid of the facial hair for my
character I used the brush to go over it on the characters face, using the same colour as
which the characters face is already set at, this is the finished face result of my character.
Feedback from Peers / Questionnaires:
No questionnaires were required for this assignment 3, Unit 78 Assignment 3 but below I
will show an example of a questionnaire I have used in the past, which I give out to my
classmates / Class Peers.

Every questionnaire I produce to give out for my classmates / class peers to fill out I ask
around eight questions and I will print out 10 copies of the questionnaire for 10 of my
classmates / class peers to fill out for me.

Opportunities:
In this section I will talk show evidence of producing and typing up an Evaluation for the
assignment 3 I am currently reviewing, the first one will be Unit 53 Assignment 3.
After most assignment 3s we do at college, there is an assignment 4, which is an evaluation
assignment. Either in this assignment, we can type up an evaluation or we can produce a
podcast talking about the required heading for the evaluation.
For this assignment 3, Unit 54 Assignment 3 I did not do a podcast.
I will show the first page of the evaluation for Unit 54 Assignment 3 and then I will screen
shot the rest of the page from that evaluation below.
Unit 54 Assignment 4 Evaluation

Effectiveness:

Extent to which brief has been realised:

I believe I have met the assignment brief exactly how I should have done. I have produced an A3 Poster,
Album Cover and Logo for a Manchester based band keeping in mind that the band originate from
Manchester. In addition, I needed to make sure that the design were relevant to the people in the band,
the origin of the band and the genre of which there music is.

Use of appropriate methods and techniques:

I believe that there are many appropriate methods and techniques you can use to produce the logo, A3
poster and Album cover for The Pixels, which we have produced in the previous assignments. For this
previous assignment, we were given and extremely recommended to use Photoshop for the production of
these graphics. I agree that Photoshop is a very appropriate method and using the tools in Photoshop to
execute the editing and production techniques for The Pixels Logo, A3 Poster and Album Cover. Other
softwares such as Paint.net and Adobe Fireworks are both very viable pieces of image editing but over the
past few years Photoshop has been deemed the number 1 software for graphics creation due to being the
most popular in my opinion because you can do the same things in these other softwares as well as
Photoshop.

Level of professionalism achieved:

I believe I have achieved a good level of professionalism while producing my graphics however there a
things, which I would change that I think, would change my level of professionalism from good to great.
While I was producing my graphics whenever I change something or do something while editing and
creating my graphics but I ended up producing my software diary after actually creating my graphics, I
believe that if I did my diary exactly alongside the production of my 3 graphics then I wouldnt have
missed a few smaller details in the production of my graphics and would turn my level of professionalism
achieved from good to great.

What message your final versions communicates:

I believe that my final graphics, especially my A3 poster and album cover strongly communicates everything it
needs to the audience. From receiving the assignment brief for the previous assignment, we knew that The
Pixels are a Manchester based band who are very popular locally / their own town and are now releasing their
new album and advertising future shows around the country through A3 Posters. The top 2 things we were
given about the band Is that they are a Manchester based band and there name is The Pixels.

In this second section of Opportunities I will talk show evidence of producing and typing up
an Evaluation for the assignment 3 I am currently reviewing, the first one will be Unit 78
Assignment 3.
After most assignment 3s we do at college, there is an assignment 4, which is an evaluation
assignment. Either in this assignment, we can type up an evaluation or we can produce a
podcast talking about the required heading for the evaluation.
For this assignment 3, Unit 78 Assignment 3 I did a podcast.
This podcast can be found on my Tutors drive in the Unit 78 Assignment 3 folder.
Skills:
In this final section I will talk about skills which are required and show your employer and
below I will state why and what skills you need within certain areas that are expectations
from an employer of what they expect you to have when performing a certain job.
Employer Expectation

Employability skills

Maths

Maths is a key skill for every aspect of this Unit because there is a lot of number to keep in mind such as the
length of the duration of the whole animation needs to be and the amount of frames needed to complete the
animation. When it came to getting the raw images for my animation production I had to take the exact
correct amount of pictures for it to fit in the 30 second time limit and at 12 frames per second, I had to make
sure I correctly spread the frames across each scene so that all my episode would be covered in a total of 360
images.

English

English is a very important skill to have when it comes to this project because most of the work is written work
and needs to be at a high standard of English to achieve my bench mark target grade, also the video clips I am
using in my animation production will have titles, text and ending song which is in English and you must be
able to understand English when picking what to use in my animation because if you didnt then you wouldnt
know whether the language being used in the clips are suitable to be broadcasted on TV.

ICT

I believe that ICT skills is the most important skill to have, especially if you are doing a digital media course.
Also just for this specific project ICT is the most important skill to have because all the theory / written work is
in programs such as PowerPoint, Word and Excel. The biggest importance of ICT skills for this project however
is the use of software production and editing programs such as Director, Flash, Photoshop, Premiere and
Aftereffects because these are programs that will be used to actually produce and create the actually my new
childrens Claymation animation production.
Communication

Communications skills isnt the most important skill that is needed while producing the a young childrens
animation episode but beforehand it definitely is because if you have poor communication skills at the start
with your new potential client they may decide to find someone else to create their animation so
communication skills with the Client is vital! Also in some aspects of the theory work for this project
communication skills are needs, such as the Questionnaire and statistical analysis because other people are
coming to view the new animation and answering questions and giving their general opinion on the product as
a whole. Bad communication skills with people rating your product and potential future customers / viewers is
also very important!

Punctuality

Punctuality I think is actually the most important thing you need when it come to this whole project because
even if you have bad maths and English skills for example, as long as your showing up when you need to and
getting help if you need it you can get it done by the deadline. Also meeting the assignment deadline is also
very important because it you miss a deadline then it could potentially badly effect your work and the final
grade that you get for this particular unit. Also being punctual with being on time for class is also very
important because for example if your 10 minutes late for class every day, that calculates to nearly 1 hours less
work time than people who are on time every day, which is a lot and shows why punctuality is key!
