2. A) Gordon has an extra chromosome on 21.
B) This genetic abnormality is Trisomy 21 also known as Down Syndrome.
C) Down syndrome can often be identified through distant facial appearance, intellectual
disabilities, developmental delays, and lazy eyes. However Down syndrome also makes the
child more prone to heart disease and other fatal illnesses.
D) The life expectancy of a child with down syndrome is fifty years or older. While in the past
it was not uncommon for a Child with Down Syndrome to not live past the age of nine, but with
more understanding of the syndrome these individuals not only have normal life spans but can
learn at their own pace and develop skills that are needed for certain jobs. Today they can live
independently with a healthy career and life style.
3. A) Gordon has no chance of having SIckle cell, however he has a 50% chance of being a
carrier and only 50% chance o f being completely absent of the gene.

B) Cystic fibrosis is a fatal disease and should be taken very seriously. It is mucus build-up in
the lungs blocking the airways, making it very hard to get oxygen to the blood and to the brain.
This is called suffocation, which in most cases is fatal. People that have this trait often have
respiratory problems like coughing or being unable to breathe well.
C) Unfortunately there is no way that this trait can be completely treated. Treatments may
only lessen the effects, creating a longer life span. However, people that seek treatment do not
survive, they only survive for a little while longer.

5. A.) Hairline- The babys genotype is (H,h) which means he has a Widows Peak, this trait is
heterozygous.

Cleft in Chin- The babys genotype is (h,h) which means he has a Cleft Chin. This trait is
homozygous recessive.

Face Shape- The babys genotype is (AA) which means he has a round face. A round face trait
is homozygous dominant.

Eye Shape- The babys genotype is (tt) which means he has round eyes. A Round eye trait is a
homozygous recessive trait.

B.) Hair Curl - His genotype is (h,h) which means he has Straight Hair. This is considered to be
incomplete dominance since there is not one dominant trait. If it's heterozygous, it will not be the
same hair type as a homozygous dominant trait. A homozygous recessive trait is the third trait.
C.) Eye Color- His genotype is (pp,Qq) which means he has Dark Blue Eyes. Polygenic means
that there are many traits in genotype. Polygenic inheritance occurs when one characteristic
is controlled by two or more genes and it worked to give our baby his genotype since
there were 3 traits
