FEST
Welcome to STEAM Fest 2017! Our district-wide
education celebration gives us a chance to come
together as a community to have fun and learn about
all the exciting Science, Technology, Engineering,
Art, and Math programs Compton Unified features.
But today is also about finding out how you, as a
parent and as a member of the Compton community,
can support our students and help them achieve
great things! We must keep working together to build
Satra Zurita our schools of the future and support our students
CUSD School success. Its a great day in Compton!
Board President

The City of Compton is excited to co-host this

important event. We know that today well get a
chance to meet the future doctors, artists, scientists,
and technology entrepreneurs! Because of Compton
Unifieds commitment to providing our students with
a 21st Century education, we know were also
investing in our communitys future. We hope that
many of those future scientists and tech leaders we
Janna Zurita meet today decide to return and help us build a new
City of Compton Compton!
Councilwoman

When we started here, we set out to build schools of the

future. We knew we had to prepare our students not only
for todays jobs and careers, but also for jobs that havent
even been created yet. Today we get a chance to celebrate
many accomplishments on our path to build that future. We
have robotics programs in almost every school. We
launched Hackathons and Scratch Coding competitions.
We enjoy partnerships with dozens of important and
successful companies who provide many resources we
dont have. This is not the Compton Unified of five years
Darin Brawley
ago but we have much more work to do. We hope you
CUSD enjoy our event and remember to congratulate the
Superintendant students and staff who worked so hard to make it happen.

Activities
The Home Depot kids workshops provide a lively environment mixing
skill-building, creativity, and safety for future DIYers. Children can work
on fun and educational projects that they can keep.

Want to learn to Code? Apple will be conducting fun and interactive

APPLE hands on coding activities for students using their engaging App called
Swift Playground.

Kids in grades K-3 will participate in a creative learning activity where

they will learn about how seabirds ingest plastics in the ocean habitat.
Older students will participate in a synthetic sand activity where
students are exploring plastics pollution in local sediments and water
samples while learning about different plastic densities.

Students will learn about physics while creating acatapult which will
launch an object. A catapult is an awesome science activity, that
incorporates math, engineering, and even technology.

Inspired by the artwork Metropolis II by Chris Burden, participants

will collaboratively build their own metropolis adding their own
elements of a city with a variety of materials such as buildings,
skyscrapers, roads, parks, etc. Students will also have the
opportunity to sign up for their free membership toLos Angeles
County Museum of Artcalled NexGen.

In this fun hands-on activity students will learn about mechanical

engineering and computer science concepts while participating in
an engaging robotic push competition.

Gojo will show students how easy it is for germs to transfer from one
person to another. They will be using black lights to show all of the
germs that can live on our hands and show us how to stay clean.
Activities
How does electricity flow through a circuit? In the Buzzing Buddies booth, students will use
mini DC motors, a battery, and cable wires to learn about open and closed circuits! Students
will be designing their own buzzing buddies taking science, math, engineering, art, and
technology into account. Get ready to have some fun! Do you know what 3D printing is? How
does it work? Have you ever seen a CNC mill in action? What about a vinyl cutter? Come to our
booth to find out how these different machines operate. Let's think about STEAM, create some
cool stuff, and learn about fabrication!

There will be a FIRST Lego League Animal Allies Table with some
Lego Mindstorm Robots. Anywhere from 5-15 students will perform
challenges on the table with their programmed robots.

Come Fly a Drone! This fun hands on activity will showcase the
basics of coding and computational thinking as they control and
program a drone. Learn about drone technology and topics such as
flight, movement, film, photography, mechanics, and even virtual
reality!

HUBCITY LIVE! is a high-tech real estate development commercial

HubCity Live! project that fuels the hopes and aspirations of youth in the
community of Compton with a place to gather, learn and make
technology, create digital art, innovate and teach children. Team
HubCity Live! would like to introduce the students to the exhibit.

PBS SoCal will be showcasing the PBS KIDS Scratchjr. app for
students, educators, and families to experience the world of
coding. Attendees will have the opportunity to also experience and
do fun activities with Makey Makey. Join PBS SoCal for fun and
interactive STEM activities everyone can do at home and in the
classroom!

Boeing engineers will be in Compton to speak with students

about the amazing and important work that they do in the
aerospace industry. They will bring real airplane and
satellite parts for students to have a hands-on experience.

Bunche Middle School

Home of the Bulldogs

STEAM is an important component at Bunche Middle
School. Our students are very eager and natural
learners. There are 5 Project Lead the Way Courses at
Bunche. Flight and Space, Medical Detectives, Design
and Modeling, and Robotics, In addition Bunche has
its own Geek Squad (GENYES) and a Lego First League
Robotics Team. Alondra, Bridget, and Carmen (left) are
the main builders of the space plane using drawing,
then using online converters for meter to foot and
scale conversions.

With the generous support of our Principal Mr. Kildare

Salazar, this year our GENYES students have gone all out
for the STEAM Fest. Their final project consist of building
a Spaceplane that will be used a space simulator with
real orbital dynamics. In addition, each student has a
specific project that will relate tospace and space
exploration. Together the GENYES studentshave logged
over 175 hours on this project. Cesar (seen right) is
collaborating with other education institutes such as
Berkeley as part of the Search for Intelligent Life Institute
(SETI) and using one of our computers to crunch the
enormous amount of data they receive from their radio
telescopes.

Mr. Soruco's students learn about the history and

impact of automation and robotics as they explore
mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine
automation, and computer control systems. Using the
VEX Robotics platform, students apply what they
know to design and program traffic lights, robotic
arms, and more.
