Definition

UV rays are invisible rays that are part of the sun's energy and is the wavelength
of electromagnetic radiation that is shorter than the visible light region, but
longer than X-rays

Frequency of UV rays
The frequency of UV light that is between 1015-1016 Hz

The inventor of UV rays

Johann Wilhelm Ritter was
born in 1776 in Samitz,
Silesia, which is now part of
Poland.
Johann Ritter is best known
for his discovery of
ultraviolet light in 1801
How he did it
In 1801, he was experimenting with silver chloride, a chemical which turned black
when exposed to sunlight. He had heard that exposure to blue light caused a
greater reaction in silver chloride than exposure to red light. Ritter decided to
measure the rate at which silver chloride reacted when exposed to the different
colors of light. To do this, he directed sunlight through a glass prism to create a
spectrum. He then placed silver chloride in each color of the spectrum. Ritter
noticed that the silver chloride showed little change in the red part of the
spectrum, but increasingly darkened toward the violet end of the spectrum. This
proved that exposure to blue light did cause silver chloride to turn black much
more efficiently than exposure to red light.
Johann Ritter then decided to place silver chloride in the area just beyond the
violet end of the spectrum, in a region where no sunlight was visible. To his
amazement, he saw that the silver chloride displayed an intense reaction well
beyond the violet end of the spectrum, where no visible light could be seen. This
showed for the first time that an invisible form of light existed beyond the violet
end of the spectrum. This new type of light, which Ritter called Chemical Rays,
later became known as ultraviolet light or ultraviolet radiation (the word ultra
means beyond)

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Types of UV Rays
UV A (380-315 nm), which is also called long waves
or Blacklight
UV B (315-280 nm), which is also called Medium
Wave
UV C (280-10 nm) is also called Short Wave
UV-A
UV-A rays cause the most radiation, UV-A rays are the main cause of
skin damage and wrinkles, UV-A rays penetrate to the dermis layer ( 2nd
skin layer) which causes the skin to lose elasticity and wrinkle. UV-A
rays can also penetrate glass.

UV-B
UV-B rays only usually damage the outer skin (epidermis layer).
Intensity of the light is between the hours of 10:00 to 14:00 the rays
does not penetrate glass, and a small amount of radiation can
synthesize vitamin D in the body, but in excess they can cause sunburn,
erythema , cataracts, and cause photochemical damage of DNA and
lead to skin cancer

UV-C
UV-C rays pose the greatest danger and cause the most damage, but
fortunately most of the light is absorbed by the Ozone layer. But
because of the damaged ozone layer, it is feared that much of the UV-C
light penetrate the hole in the ozone layer and cause a variety of effects
to human being.

The benefits of UV rays

Main Sources of Vitamin D
Reduce Blood Cholesterol
antidote to Infection and Bacteria
Reduce Blood Sugar
Helps form and repair bone

Laminar Air Flow

Laminar Air Flow

1. Turn on the UV lamp, minimum of 30 minutes, before the laminar
air flow is used. Avoid the light from body and eyes.
2. Prepare all sterile instruments that will be used. The tools are
inserted into one in the laminar air flow cabinet, is sprayed first
with 70% alcohol or methylated spirit.
3. Desk and wall in the LAF is sprayed with 70% alcohol or rubbing
alcohol to sterilize the LAF.
4. The blower on LAF is turned to ON to run the air flow.
5. Turn on the lights within LAF.
LAF is ready to be used.

How it works
Ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 240-300 nm is absorbed
easily by the DNA bases and can cause dimer that would cause
mutations and cell death. Germicides UVR lamps are lamps that emit
ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 254nm which is used to sterilize
the air or the surface of an object. Examples of the use of UVR light is
on laminar air flow
UVR light is on laminar air flow
Question
1. Which ultraviolet rays is most dangerous for the human body?
A. UV-A
B. UV-B
C. UV-C
D. None of the above

The answer is C. UV-C

Conclusion
UV rays are :

- invisible rays part of the sun's energy

- the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation that is
shorter than the visible light region, but longer than
X-rays
- Have 3 types : UV A, UV B, UV C
- The frequency of UV light that is between 1015-1016
Hz
