Fromthere,firstyearstudentsareaccompaniedbythe"KeeperoftheKeys,GameandGrounds"(whichwasHagridduringthefirstnovel)tosmallboats,which

Hogwartsisdividedintofourhouses,eachbearingthelastnameofitsfounder:GodricGryffindor,SalazarSlytherin,

forvariousevents,fortheHouseCup(correctlyansweringaquestioninclass,forexample,mayearnfiveortenpoints

houseistheHerbologyteacherPomonaSprout,andthehouseghostisTheFatFriar.AccordingtoRowling,Hufflepuffcorrespondsroughlytothe
elementofearth.ThefounderofthishouseisHelgaHufflepuff.

TheentrancetotheHufflepuffdormitoriesandcommonroomentranceisconcealedinapileoflargebarrelsinanalcoveinthecorridorthatholdsthekitchen.To

ChamberofSecrets

TheChamberofSecrets,whichisdeepundertheschool(mostlikelyunderthelake),[28]washometoanancientBasilisk,intendedtobeusedtopurgetheschool
ofMugglebornstudents.SalazarSlytherin,oneofthefoundersofHogwarts,builttheChamberbeforehelefttheschool.

TheChamberiswellhiddenanditsentranceisinMoaningMyrtle'sbathroomonthesecondfloor,whichleadsdownintoadark,slimystonetunnel.Thereare
manyskeletonsofsmallanimalslitteringthefloorandevenagiganticskinshedbytheBasilisk.Thetunnelleadstoasolidwall,carvedwithtwoentwined
serpentswithemeraldsforeyes.[28]WhenParseltongueisspokentheyopenintoalong,dimcorridor,linedwithmonumentalstatuesofsnakes,includingtwo

toweringstonepillarswithmorecarvedserpentsthatbracetheceiling.AcolossalstatueofSalazarSlytherin,looking
ancientandmonkeylike,isatthecentre.TheBasiliskrestedinsidethestatueandemergedfromitsmouthwhentheHeir
ofSlytherin,TomRiddle,summonedit.[29]InhissecondyearatHogwarts,HarryusesParseltonguetoopenthechamber
anddestroysthediarycontainingtheembodiedmemoryofa16yearoldTomRiddlefromhisowndaysatHogwarts.Itis
laterrevealedthatthediarywasaHorcrux.InDeathlyHallows,RonandHermioneentertheChamber.Ronopensthedoor

TheChamberofSecretsasseeninMoaningMyrtle'sbathroomcontainstheentrancetotheChamberofSecrets.Theentranceisasinkwithasnakescratched
thesecondfilm ontothetap,openedbyspeakingParseltongue.Thiscausesthesinktoopenintoapipelargeenoughforapersontoslide
downit.AtthebottomofthischuteisatunnelleadingtotheChamberofSecrets.WhenTomRiddleopenedtheChamber,
Myrtlewassulkinginastall.Whensheheardhim,sheopenedthedoor,sawtheBasilisk,anddiedimmediately,becoming

aghost. Herbathroomremainsoperational,butisrarelyusedbystudentsbecauseofMyrtle'sdisagreeablepresenceandherhabitoffloodingitwhensheis
distraught.

Passages

Thereareusuallysevensecretpassagesinandoutoftheschool,andinaddition,theseriesdescribestheuseoftwinvanishingcabinetstocreateanother.Filch
knowsofjustfourofthesewhiletheMarauders(RemusLupin,PeterPettrigrew,SiriusandJames)andtheWeasleytwinsknowofallseven,thoughwheresome
leadisunknown.TheRoomofRequirementmay,onoccasion,createaneighthpassageoutoftheschool.Theonlyknowninstanceofthisoccurringisapassage
totheHog'sHeadbarthatformedbeforetheBattleofHogwarts.DuetothenatureoftheRoomofRequirement,itispossiblethatseveralpassagestodifferent
locationscouldbeaccessedfromtheRoom.ThethreepassagesoutofHogwartsthatFilchdoesnotknowaboutare:

aloudtheword'Dissendium'tothewitchallowsaccesstothispassagethehumponthestatuethenopensandrevealsthehiddenpassageway.

Afurtherlinkbetweentwovanishingcabinets,oneintheschoolandtheotherinBorginandBurkesinKnockturnAlleypresumablyworkeduntilChamberof
SecretswhenPeeves(persuadedbyNearlyHeadlessNick)smashedtheHogwartscabinet.ThepassagewasreopenedinHalfBloodPrincewhenDracoMalfoy
fixedthecabinet.ThispassageisnotshownontheMarauder'sMapasitisnotpartofthecastleitself.

Besidespassagesinandoutoftheschool,therearealsonumerousshortcutsthatleadfromonepartofthecastletoanother.Theseareoftenconcealedinsuch
fashionsasatapestrywhichhidesaholeinthewall.

RoomofRequirement

OntheseventhflooroppositeanenormoustapestrydepictingBarnabastheBarmyattemptingtotraintrollsfortheballet,theRoomofRequirementappearsonly
whensomeoneisinneedofit.Tomakeitappear,onemustwalkpastitshiddenentrancethreetimeswhileconcentratingonwhatisneeded.Theroomwillthen
appear,outfittedwithwhateverisrequired.TotheHogwartshouseelves,itisalsoknownastheComeandGoRoom.

Dumbledorewasfirsttomentiontheroom,notingthathediscovereditatfivethirtyinthemorning,filledwithchamberpotswhenhewastryingtofindatoilet.
However,DumbledoredidnotappeartoknowtheRoom'ssecrets.DobbylatertoldHarryoftheRoomindetailandadmittedtofrequentlybringingWinkytothe
roomtocureherboutsofButterbeerinduceddrunkenness,findingitfullofantidotesanda"niceelfsizedbed."Filchwassaidtofindcleaningsuppliesherewhen
hehadrunoutwhenFredandGeorgeneededaplacetohide,itwouldappearasabroomcupboard.Trelawneyalsomakesahabitofusingittohideherempty
sherrybottlesaftersheissackedinOrderofthePhoenix.Itwouldseemthatwhenonewishestohidesomethingitproducesthesameroomforeveryone:the
RoomofHiddenThings,whichisfullofmanycenturiesworthofabandonedobjects,suchasbrokenfurniture,books,andinonecaseadeadquintaped(formore
informationseeFantasticBeastsandWheretoFindThem),whichwerepresumablyforgottenbytheirowners.

Harrylearnedoftheroom'sabilitiesfromDobby,findingittheperfectlocationforhisDumbledore'sArmymeetings,duringwhichitwouldbefilledwith
bookcasesfullofDefenceAgainsttheDarkArtsvolumes,manydifferentkindsofDarkDetectors,andaplethoraoffloorcushionsforpractisingdefensivespells.
WhentheD.A.wasbetrayed,theroomwasleftopen,andPansyParkinsonwasabletoretrievethelistofmembersoftheorganisation.InHalfBloodPrinceHarry
usedtheRoomofHiddenThingstostashhiscopyofAdvancedPotionMaking,describingitasthesizeofalargecathedralandpackedtooverflowingwithitems
hiddenbyHogwartsinhabitantsovertheyears,suchasoldpotions,clothing,ruinedfurniture,anoldtiara(whichhappenedtobeoneofVoldemort'sHorcruxes),
orbookswhichwere"nodoubtbannedorgraffitiedorstolen."HelaterrealisedthatDracohadbeenusingtheroominthatstatetohideandrepairtheVanishing
CabinettouseittosmuggleDeathEatersintoHogwarts.Ironically,whileHarrytriesmanytimestogetintotheRoomofRequirementtoseewhatDracoisdoing,
theonlytimehesucceedstogetintotheroom(andheisnotthinkingaboutDraco),hegainsaccesstotheroomwhereMalfoyhasbeenworking.

InDeathlyHallows,thestudentswhoneedaplacetohidefromtheCarrows,twoDeathEaterprofessors,usetheroom.ItisalsorevealedthattheRoomof
Requirement'scurrentversioncanchangewhilestilloccupied,thoughshouldacompletelydifferentversionberequired(e.g.theRoomofHiddenThingsinstead
ofDAHeadquarters)theroommustbeempty.TheRoomcanalsoanswertothedesireofthewizardwithintheroom,suchasprovidingHarrywithawhistle

ForbiddenForest

TheForbiddenForestisalarge,darkforestintheboundariesoftheschoolgrounds.Itisusuallyreferredtosimplyas"theForest"andinthefilmseriesasthe
"DarkForest".Itisstrictlyforbiddentoallstudents,exceptduringCareofMagicalCreatureslessonsand,onrareoccasions,detentions.

AmongtheplantspecieswithintheForestaretreessuchasbeech,oak,pine,sycamore,yewandknotgrassandthornundergrowth.ThoughtheForestisvastly
