Cantilever slabs are a typical one way slabs. They are projections from wall face of
lintel beams or oor slabs.

Even while designing they are considered as one-slabs with cantilever xed or
continuous at supports. The trial depth is selected based on span/depth ratio of 7, as
in IS:456.

The reinforcement provided at the tension face should be checked for anchorage
length near supports. The thickness of such slabs is varied from max. at the xed end
to the min. of 100 to 150 mm at the free end. Distribution steel should be provided at
the transverse direction.

Proper selection of depth and detailing of reinforcements will safeguard against

excessive deections and cracking of the cantilever slabs. Also, cantilever structural
elements should be checked for safety against overturning.

To design any structure, and not just a cantilever slab, here is the general procedure:

1. Identify the geometry of the structure - such as span, support constraints,

material properties of which the structure is made, cross section shape and
size if already known.

2. Identify the loads expected to act on the structure during its expected
lifetime.

3. Analyse the structure for the identied loads and determine support
reactions and internal forces, such as, axial force, shear force, bending
moment at dierent locations of all the members of the structure.

4. Design each member one by one. Design of a member depends one the
predominant structural action to which the member is subjected. Based on
this, a member could be categorized as:

bending)

b. Flexural member (beams, slabs) subjected to bending and shear 1

c. Torsional member subjected to twisting about the longitudinal axis

5. Design procedure will vary depending on the category described above as

well as on the type of material (reinforced concrete or steel)

6. Identify critical section or sections and then proportion the cross section to
have a capacity equal to or greater than the design force at the section

Yes we can design a cantilever beam but there cannot be much span as in simply
supported beams. You can get reason by following example.

1. Span=L, Simply supported. So moment will be maximum at reaction F(L/2)

when force is applied at middle.

2. Span=L,Cantilever beam so maximum moment will be FL at xed end. If

force is appliedat free end.

So the moment is doubled then the design is made acording to that.
