FROM THE DESK
The only time I ever went to a
fitness centre turned out to be one
of the most embarrassing moments
of my life. It happened so that my
roomies and I were having a serious
discussion on fitness and how all 4 of
us would come out of the gym looking
like Arnold Schwarzenegger in just 6
months. Yeah, that was our goal!
Anyway, so there we were,
overwhelmed after looking at some
20 odd guys pumping their muscles
with Biebers Baby playing out loud
enough to irritate me even more. I
was seemingly the only odd one out
in the room, but I still managed to
ask the trainer what I should do. He
told me to do shoulder press behind
the neck. Now heres what made
me the laughing stock among my
friends. I couldnt lift the barbell with
10kg weights! And the worst part, the
weights were removed and I was told
to just lift the barbell! That was the
day I decided that it was my first and
the last day at any gym.
You must be thinking that why
I am talking about my fiasco at a
fitness centre. It is because this

issue is our ultimate fitness special
and after a month of slogging, I am
determined to visit the gym again.
And this time, to walk out as a fitter
and better version of myself. Yes,
this is what Disha Patani, our cover
girl feels too. Actually it was Dishas
motivational 24 reasons (pg. 50) that
inspired me to look at my life in a very
different way.
We talked to fitness expert, Urmi
Kothari from Nike, to bust down the
myths surrounding weight training
(pg. 32).
Other than fitness, we pitched the
Volkswagen Beetle against the Indian
Scout. We know that it doesnt make
any sense, but once you will read it,
we are sure that youd agree with our
idea. We also went to Dhanushkodi,
the forgotten part of the Pamban
Island to see if we can settle down
there with the fishermen.
And yeah, before I forget, we have
the regulars lined up for you. So, flip

FHM: Hi, Mansi. What are you up to
these days?
Mansi: Up to something really good Id say
(laughs)! Of late, I was house hunting, so there
were some hectic days!
How different do you find working in a
web series than regular TV soaps?
Its the same for me. Both mediums involve
acting and I love to act. I feel that TV is still
stuck to the saas bahu drama. But in web
series, we get to play different real life roles
and it involves real life situations which is
quite refreshing.
In Big F you are playing an aspiring
footballer. Do you like football? Whos
your favourite player?
To tell you the truth I played football for the
first time while shooting for BIG F (haha). Its
a difficult but interesting sport. I got the best
tan of my life (haha). I loved playing football
and it was really good to portray the role of a
Haryanvi girl who fights against the society to
pursue her dream of becoming a footballer.
My all-time favourite is David Beckham.
Do you have an account on Netflix or
Amazon Prime? What series are you
watching these days?
I have an account on Netflix and Hotstar. Im
a diehard Game of Thrones fan and
desperately waiting for the next season. Im
currently hooked on to This Is Us on Hotstar.

Maybe the Chandigarh administration was
really inspired with aircraft manufacturers,
even they dont have row number 13 in any
aircrafts (laughs). You know I think that they

Being a 90s kid what do you miss in
this decade?
I desperately miss the simplicity of life. Our
lives are getting more and more complex
every day with so many new gadgets coming
around. Our lives are now surrounded by so
much of electronic stuff that we dont even
have time for people around us. It was so
simple back then when we just waited for a
kulfiwala to come every afternoon and that
was our source of happiness.
You love painting. Have you uploaded
your paintings or sketches somewhere
that your fans can go and check out?
No, not at all. Im not that great of a painter. It
is better that they remain hidden for no one
to see but me. I just paint whenever I feel a
little low, and to my surprise, paintings also
turn out to be below my expectations.

Not really! I had to stand in the queue just
once throughout the exercise. And it was
quite fun because everybody was really cool

traffic, work and spending time with our

get to the gym it feels like a victory, however the one
hour spent in the gym is hardly enough in order to be

important to change your lifestyle, especially when you
are not at the gym to see the benefits of training. Here
are some questions that you need to ask your trainer
so that you get the most out of your exercise sessions.

1 WHAT TO EAT BEFORE AND AFTER TRAINING?

This will greatly depend on the type of exercise
programme you follow, the intensity of the
exercises and your goals. For example, if you want
to lose weight and your instructor has included
cardiovascular exercise as your programme of the
day, it is best to exercise in a fasting state, early in
the morning. This is because when the body is
fasting it starts using fat stores as fuel for the
exercise. Another example is when your goal is
building muscle. Here you need to consume a
proper meal which includes protein and
carbohydrates, two hours before you go to the
gym. Right before the workout, have a couple of
sips of protein shake. If you dont take protein
supplements, having some nuts or beans before a
workout will do the job too. After your workout, be
sure to drink the rest of the protein shake or
consume a meal rich in protein.

A SESSION?
Heart rate is a very important measure of
intensity during training, therefore ask your
gym trainer what your ideal heart rate for
the session has to be. Heart rate can vary
with age, gender, fitness level and exercise.
Children tend to have a higher heart rate
while training whereas adults have a slower
heart rate. However, in unfit adults, the heart
rate can spike abnormally while working out.
It is crucial to monitor it throughout the
programme because it can indicate intensity
as well as irregularities and diseases. Make
sure you breathe enough and at the right
stages of the exercise as it will help slow
down the heart rate. Adults with a history of
heart disease and high blood pressure as
well as individuals who are older also need

to be monitored carefully. A simple
calculation can be made to know what your
maximum heart rate is 220 minus your
age. This will make sure you dont overdo it.

WHAT QUANTITY OF WATER SHOULD YOU CONSUME AND THE

These will also depend on the type of exercise,
the intensity of the programme, the location
whether outdoors or indoors as well as the
duration of the workout session. Programmes that
are of longer duration and higher intensity might
require you to drink more fluids. On an average,
anyone who trains regularly should drink about
4-5 litres of water in a day. While training
outdoors in a hot and humid climate, more care
has to be taken. Make sure you consume lot of
fluids before rather than on the day of training, so
that the water has time to be stored in your body.
Finally, sleep impacts training because muscles
grow when you are sleeping. The average adult
needs to sleep at least 6-8 hours per night.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOURE NOT TRAINING?
Many people think that if they train three days a
week they will lose excess weight or gain
muscle. However, research suggests that
engaging in exercise for one hour a day
becomes useless if you sit for more than six
hours a day. This means that if you are not active
during the most part of the day all the benefits
from training for that one hour is lost. In order to
reach your goal quicker you have to stay active
throughout the day hence, the most important
question to ask your fitness professional is what
to do when you are not training. Here a standing
desk can come in handy to burn those extra
calories. Another tip is to walk to colleagues who
sit in the same office, instead of sending emails,
taking the stairs to different offices and getting
up every hour for five minutes and walking
around. Since most jobs require you to sit for
most of the time, make sure that your sitting
posture is proper. Sitting for long with the wrong
posture can cause a lot of back pain. Always
make sure that you have a good chair, that your
forearms are in line with the table and arm
handles and that your neck is straight. In order to
prevent back pain make sure you do regular core
exercises while training.
WHAT ARE THE VARIATIONS TO YOUR PROGRAMME?
Ask your trainer to vary your programme. Gym
programmes can sometimes get very repetitive
and mundane and that usually makes people
lose interest in training. Adding variations or
completely changing them can light up the spark
to train again. The body loves change so keep
challenging yourself and ask your trainer to
challenge you. Ask him/her to design
programmes such as strength with power,
strength training in a circuit training format or
HIIT instead of cardiovascular training.
Exercising is a crucial part of staying healthy,
and exercising regularly with a trainer can be
hugely beneficial to your health. However, many
people dont fully utilise their trainers by asking
them relevant questions. Asking the above basic
questions will help your trainer design a more
customised programme for you. You will see

Founder,
Poker Sports League (PSL)
Congratulations on the first India Poker
Sports League tournament. What are
the expectations?
Amit Burman: We would like PSL to be as
popular as any other league such as cricket,
kabaddi, hockey, etc. The aim of introducing PSL
is to further sportify it as a skill game and make it
a spectator sport. Poker is a mind game and
enjoys tremendous traction internationally. Our
first ever Poker Sports League will showcase the
best of the poker enthusiasts in India and will also
provide them a platform to showcase their skills.
India has several poker tournaments held at
quite a large scale but an idea of a league is
pretty unique. With your background deep in
the FMCG sector how did this come about?
AB: Yes, PSL is definitely a diversification from
the FMCG sector. Lot of sports leagues across
categories have been introduced in the last few
years such as Pro Kabaddi League, Indian Super
League, Premier Badminton League, Pro
Wrestling League but there wasnt any dedicated
mind sport or league. So we identified a gap there
and felt that given that our country has some
great poker players and lot of tournaments are
happening on poker its time to own a poker
league of our own.
International poker tournaments also witness a lot
of participation from Indian contingents. There is a
lot of interest for poker here so I felt that a team
based tournament will do well in India. This is
something that we have seen when we generated
a lot of interest among the serious as well as
amateur poker players and corporates and sold
our 12 teams immediately. There is lot of
enthusiasm within the team owners, mentors and
players, and we are looking forward to making the
maiden season a hit.
The owners of the teams are pretty well
known. Was there a stiff competition in
buying the teams?
AB: The first season had interest from a lot of
corporates and we had to reject many of them. We
even suggested to some of them to form a
consortium to buy a team. Next year we shall
expand it and make it bigger.
How closely are you personally associated
with poker?
AB: I do play the sport but I wont say I am an
excellent player. Poker is a skill based game and it
purely depends on skill and mathematics,
probability and decision making strategy. If a
poker player plays for a long time, the luck
element goes away. So if you play 30 to 40
games in 2 days, there is no luck involved
anymore. A good poker player, who can read
somebodys mind and see the probabilities and
mathematics of the game theory, will always be
the winner in longer term.

What are your expectations from the
first season of Poker League?
Pranav Bagai: This is the first year and
we are excited with the response
received for the inaugural season. The
most challenging part of the league
was to sell the teams and we have
been able to get leading corporate
honchos as team owners.
On the players side, we have been able
to engage with active poker players
within the poker community and all of
them are equally enthusiastic about it.
As we move from here, the focus is
now the grand finale. Our aim, as Amit
said, is to establish poker as a mind
sport in the country and we want to
establish Poker Sports League as one
of the premier league sport.
How do the teams look like? Are all
players Indian in the league?
PB: There are 12 teams that will
consist of a total of 108 players. Each
team will consist of 9 players (1
mentor/captain; 2 pro players; 2 players
selected from free live qualifiers; 2
players selected from free online
qualifiers; 2 wild card entries).
The wild card players will be selected
by mentors and team owners and they
have an option of bringing in an
international player. The teams are
currently being built and we are
confident of getting some international
wild card entries in the first season.
If we talk pure numbers, how big is
the poker scene in India?
PB: There are about 1 million
registered users on Adda52.com and
approximately 100 million poker players
worldwide.
Of late few states in India have
positively started to recognise
poker as a game of skill, however
largely it is still considered a

PB: Poker is definitely a mind skill
game. The design of the Poker Sports
League itself proves so. The
International Mind Sports Association
will soon recognise poker as a game of
skill and induct it in mind sports.
Anybody who wants to be a part of the
team will have to perform well in
multiple events and the luck element
definitely goes away.
How conducive is the business for
online poker start-ups right now?
PB: Adda52.com was acquired by Delta
Corp which is a public listed company.
This gave an impetus to the industry
and with this development, we have
seen new poker portals coming up on a
weekly and monthly basis and the list is
growing. We, at Poker Sports League,
are growing poker as a sport,
encouraging more players to take up
the sport and ultimately help the game
in the long run. There is a lot of scope
for both players as well as companies
who are thinking of entering this sector.
Figures tell us that poker in India is
hugely dominated by men. Whats
your observation on that?
PB: Yes, the stats do show it, but I think
the perception is slowly changing.
Karnataka, West Bengal and Nagaland
have given a clear verdict, classifying
poker as a skill-based game. With the
increase in the numbers of states
accepting poker as a legal sport, there
will be an automatic growth in the
number of women poker players as
well. Incidentally, our COO is also a
woman and a recognised professional
poker player.
How long have you been playing it?
How did you garner interest in it?
PB: I started playing poker in 2007.
This was followed by the launch of my
venture The Shark with a friend in
2008. We ran the first international
poker magazine in India and also
supplied poker products in India
(customised poker chips, cards etc). In
2009, we organised a legal poker
tournament in Goa.
In 2012-13, I joined Adda52.com as an
external consultant, while continuing to
focus on my family business. Now I am
back fulltime in the business of poker.
Youre the CEO of PSL. As an avid
player yourself, will your role go
beyond the boss in the upcoming
tournament?
PB: I was personally involved in
designing the league and selling all the
12 teams. Poker Sports League is
designed structurally to maintain a
balanced approach. In my current role, I
have to ensure that the league
progresses as per the vision of the
co-founders. While I can always mentor
the players, unfortunately I would not
be able to participate in the league as
a player.

The blockbuster film Bahubali now has a background
story by one of the finest storytellers of our time. In
conversation with Anand Neelakantan...

When Anand came to Delhi for the launch
of his book Rise of Sivagami, the first of
a trilogy on the extremely popular story of
Bahubali, I had one question ringing in my
mind. The same question that millions of
people throughout the sub-continent have
resonated for almost two years why did
Katappa kill Bahubali? And obviously so, I
asked him. He began to answer and my
heart throbbed like a bass drum. Would I
be the first person outside the tight
Rajamouli circle to know the secret a
month before the movie released with an
official explanation? My family asked me
this question when I was commissioned
for the book and I promised them that I will
tell only one family member. Four days
later I told it to my dog, guffaws the 43
year old engineer-turned-writer who shot
to an unprecedented firmament of fame
after his first book, Asura, was released
under Leadstart Publishing. Five years
later he is sitting with director Rajamouli,
actors Rana Daggubati and Ramya
Krishnan to launch his fourth book at an
Inox theatre in Delhi.
Mr. Rajamouli called me up and I
thought it was a prank call, Anand
narrates how he got to writing a book on
one of the most famous stories of modern
cinema. Apparently he would brag to his
friends that someday he would get a call
from some top director for his work, but
never had he imagined that it would
happen so randomly. Then he sent me a
mail and I was shocked. We met and he
asked me to write something. In the
introduction of The Rise of Sivagami,

Rajamouli writes that he was deeply moved
by Asura. But his books so far have all been
based on a lot of research from the folk
narration of Indian stories and involve a close
investigation of the classics. And in this
commissioning he would have to create a
whole new world with plots and characters
that did not yet exist. Mr. Rajamouli had a
similar doubt like you about me creating
original content. But I knew that I didnt lack
imagination, so I said Ill try and when I did, he
liked it.
I was given the entire freedom to write
the story. That is a great thing about him to
trust people like that. Only in the end he
asked me to change a few names so that
there was no confusion, says the author.
Almost 90 per cent of the story belongs to
him, in fact there are only three characters
from the movie that feature in the entire
trilogy. I am not writing the story of Bahubali,
but 30 years before Bahubali. Before
Bahubali it was Sivagami, and I am writing
her story... from a 17 year old girl to when
she becomes the Rajamata, which will span
through three books, explains Anand.
THE WRITING PROCESS
On several occasions Ive spoken to writers
of good repute and a common factor with
their methodology is an immaculate planning
for their books. However, Anand calls his
process of writing a very confusing one and
something that new writers should not be
advised to follow. I plot as I go. I dont have
the entire book in my mind from the start. I
like my characters to grow on their own. My
focus is more on how a character would
react in a certain situation; now every
reaction would result in three or four
consequences. I choose one of them and
see if it works. If it works, good, if it doesnt
then I come back and choose another path.
Sounds like a scientists approach while
conducting experiments.
I can imagine him writing page after page
like mediums do in automatic writing, getting
few surprises here and there himself. No
wonder he took just 64 days to complete the
basic writing. Can this be something of a
record? Anand jokes, May be it is. But Book:

Getting off...
The Edge
GOING OFF THE EDGE IS A POPULAR CHOICE

have written almost 15
different starts to this
feature but none of them
could capture my reason
for driving 1500 kms from
Mumbai to this forgotten
spot situated at the tip of
the Palk Strait. Before
going further I must tell
you that I am a nutcase
when it comes to driving.
Ask me to choose
between a 10 km trek
through some of the most
pristine landscapes in the
world and a 5000 km long
drive through the worst
possible roads, I will beginning...
choose the latter. So when It All Started... about a

reached Rameshwaram and

right on the beachfront. Now I
must say that they had pretty
decent rooms and a great view...
But the restaurant... extremely
disappointing. Having finally
cleared the distance we decided
to call it a night and set up the
alarm for an early morning start.

THE PROMISED LAND...

First thing you got to understand
about Dhanushkodi is that its part
of the Pamban Island and water
surrounds you on all sides. So
when youre about to reach the
Pamban bridge, which connects
Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi
to the mainland, a point comes
where you see an expanse of
sparkling blue water looming on
your right. The view is such that
you feel as if any moment the sea
is going to spill over and wash you
off like a worm. More than fear, its
the feeling of awe that greets this and we could simply drive through A MOMENT OF SILENCE... railway station, post office and

to a challenge. I would say it was the perfect partner for this trip.

f you have fomo (fear of
acclaimed missing out) it may be

other on the Pest side and

with not much to choose
between them.
Strolling down the
street we saw that the
best scenic views are on
the Buda side. Many of
the monuments,
especially the majestic
Parliament are on the
hills of Buda. Therefore
the views from Pest are
the best. The parliament
looks grand from the
outside, and even more
so at night when it is all
lit up. This has to be
arranged and a passport
is necessary as an ID
proof. But despite the
procedures the visit was
totally worth it.
Buda castle, the
Chain Bridge all lit up at
night add up to the
unique charm of the city.
A concert in ancient St.
Stephens Basilica with
its high dome is made
perfect with its acoustics
and atmosphere. Pest,
predominantly a
residential area of the
bourgeois, is
encompassed with
excellent bars, cafes and
restaurants. Another
attractive feature is the
great shopping
complexes behind the
Riverfront Hotels. We
also came across
Hungarian folk dances in
a theatre on this side of
town; they are not the
usual tourist trap that the
name might imply. On
both sides there are
famous cafes and after a
visit it becomes clear
why they are
appreciated. The tram
and metro system is
cheap and efficient.
