Treatment-Unit 72-Assignment 3
Introduction: For this particular assignment, I am going to tell
information to which I am going to create in my practical assignment.
During the process of this treatment, I am going to include illustrations
to connect my text with pictures, I will be including certain headings
like Front cover, format of game, Market research e.c.t. I will also be
doing a written conclusion for this treatment to conclude my work.
Front Cover: -Name: The name of my Game is Guitar Hero: British Special. I have decided to
choose this name as it links it back to the actual company Guitar Hero however, I have
decided to add a twist to this, this being as British theme, I will be including British bands,
relevant to my target audience as well as relevant to the theme. (British) so for example: I
will be playing songs from the Stone Roses and Oasis e.c.t. including New and old British
songs to make my game exiting as well as covering all ranges. For my Logo, this is going to
also include the British theme, which Is going to be included into the original Guitar Hero
logo. Game name: My game name is Guitar Hero: British Special, as represented in the logo
that I have created. My USP-Unique selling point is the British Theme The theme of the
game is music and band gameplay. As my game is featured towards British Bands, this
enables me to tailor the game specifically to a target audience as shown above, the name of
the game is Guitar Hero: British Special, so this fits perfectly with the theme of the game
and in which I am going to explain. First of all, to fit in with the theme of the game and the

3
Unit 72-Assignment 3

British special, I have chosen British bands to feature in the game. This enables the game
player to really feel included to make it a great game.
Game/Formal Language: I have to consider everything for this section as I do not want to
offend anyone, I will do this through legal and ethical considerations. - Making a computer
game means that you have to cover all Ethical considerations, this means that there will be
restrictions to what you can exactly do for example religion will come in to the category
therefore different meanings can come in to Ethical considerations. Ethical considerations
are to protect people from things such as racial comments which could offend somebody
and cause huge problems. Ethical Considerations is not just the things you say away from
the internet but on the internet as well, comments can upset people and cause further stirs.
People are more likely to say harsh things online as they dont think that just because there
online they will get away with it. They wont as it can always be tracked meaning they will
be punished. In the media world and various different media jobs, more restrictions will
apply to what you can and cannot do, when working for the BBC or ITV, rules will apply in
what you can and cant say, for example: if you work for a television channel or radio
presenter and you say something which can be seen as racist or ethical then you will most
likely be sacked and serious cases could even be as serious as imprisonment. If somebody
reports a piece of offensive material than this could cost the company lots of money so rules
apply heavily in the media industry as well as outside the industry in every day-to-day life.
Below are the things you have to consider to do with an Ethical statement:
You are ensuring quality and integrity of your research
You will seek informed consent
You will respect the confidentiality and anonymity of your research respondents
You will ensure that your participants will participate in your study voluntarily
You will avoid harm to your participants
You can show that your research is independent and impartial.
There following rules apply to avoid breaching the Ethical Considerations law:
*You are not allowed to use any pictures; video or sound clips unless you have obtained the
owners permission before hand.
*You are not allowed to use any part of someones work without permission. This links in
with the copyright law.
You have to be careful in how you represent and describe people in your work and make
sure that you are not biased in anything you say- This may apply to (Race, Gender, Sexuality,
Disability, Nationality, Religion and Age)
This connotes that you cant suggest it in any way that these specific groups will take
offence to. If you produced a production for a big company then this will most likely not be

4
Unit 72-Assignment 3

seen, there are laws put in place to stop this from happening such as The Race Relations Act,
it is important you do not breach these acts.
When planning a design, it Is important to talk everyone above in consideration to ensure
that no breaching of these acts take place. I have put everything above into sensible
consideration but if I will have to check with my client to make them aware of these
considerations further action will take place if necessary.
To make exact sure that I do not break any of these rules, it is essential that I gain
permission for my images and videos from the internet. If I am declined from this
transaction then I will have to not use the owners images, this meaning that I will have to
go through this process again and look for more until my acceptance is granted. When
downloading them, I need make sure that the images/videos are not copyrighted, again
otherwise I will be breaching an act. I will need to make sure that the content is A:
Appropriate and B: Safe, so that I can include It in my software and it will not discriminate
anyone. The softwares I will be using have been published by my college so I trust the
programs to be safe and secure. I will not be able to use this software at my own home as I
have not personally brought the software.
Format of game: The format of the game is The game serves as a reboot of the Guitar Hero
franchise, being the first new entry in the series since Warriors of Rock in 2010 and the
seventh instalment overall. Activision wanted to bring back Guitar Hero for the next
generation of video game consoles but wanted the new game to be innovative. Freestyle
Games was given a free rein to revitalize the series by Activision, which led to the
development of a new guitar controller featuring a 6 button, 3-fret layout in contrast to the
5 button controller of previous games. Freestyle Games also wanted to bring a more
immersive experience to the player, and developed the main career mode GH Live to have
the note pattern displayed atop full motion video taken from the perspective of a lead
guitarist during a concert, with the crowd and other band members dynamically reacting to
the player's performance. Freestyle Games also wanted to forgo the traditional
downloadable content model to provide new songs for the game, and created the GHTV
mode which encompasses curated playlists in the style of music television channels that are
streamed around the clock, allowing them to easily acquire and add new songs. Within
GHTV, songs are presented with the note track overlaid atop their music video or from live
concert footage. GHTV allows players to pick up and play currently-streamed songs at any
time or use money and in-game credits to play any song within the library, forgoing
traditional downloadable content. The game was shipped with forty-two songs on disc and
200 songs within the GHTV library; New content has been added on a weekly basis,
provided through premium shows that earn players unique rewards. As the game is a
franchise and different games formats could be changed, mine will be changed to the British
theme as stated throughout the treatment, which allows the viewer to gain more of an
understanding about the game, especially through the format.
Genre it fits into: The Guitar Hero series sometimes referred to as the Hero series is a series
of music rhythm games first published in 2005 by Red Octane and Harmonix, and distributed
by Activision, in which players use a guitar-shaped game controller to simulate playing lead,

5
Unit 72-Assignment 3

bass guitar, and rhythm guitar across numerous rock music songs. Players match notes that
scroll on-screen to coloured fret buttons on the controller, strumming the controller in time
to the music in order to score points, and keep the virtual audience excited. The games
attempt to mimic many features of playing a real guitar, including the use of fast-fingering
hammer-ones and pull-offs and the use of the whammy bar to alter the pitch of notes. Most
games support single player modes, typically a Career mode to play through all the songs in
the game, and both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes. With the introduction
of Guitar Hero World Tour in 2008, the game includes support for a four-player band
including vocals and drums. The series initially used mostly cover versions of songs created
by Wave Group Sound, but most recent titles feature soundtracks that are fully master
recordings, and in some cases, special re-recordings, of the songs. Later titles in the series
feature support for downloadable content in the form of new songs.

Market Research: (Last assignment): The Target Audience I have been given from my brief
was based on both Male and Females so therefore it includes all genders. The age has to be
between the ages of 16-30 years old. The age limit has been chosen specifically from
research, this is the best age group as any younger than 16 would make you restricted to
what you can do Health and Safety wise and no older than 30 because you may be set in
your career and not have chance to go or even have a bigger responsibility if you have
children. As the game that I creating involves bands that may appeal to this age range, I feel
that this will really work. For example, choosing Oasis and Stone roses will appeal to the
older generation as well as the current teen generation. For my target audience, I will
have to cover, ethical considering from my market research especially in games, I have
written a report of ethical considerations to add further to my target audience-market
research: Making a computer game means that you have to cover all Ethical considerations,
this means that there will be restrictions to what you can exactly do for example religion will
come in to the category therefore different meanings can come in to Ethical considerations.
Ethical considerations are to protect people from things such as racial comments which

Identify your audience: My audience is 16-30 years olds for my game. This is because the
game is aimed at higher target audience, as seen (16-30) as the game includes a wide
variety of songs covering these ranges, by identifying my audience, I am going to explain
further as to why I have chosen this particular audience. In addition to this, I will explain
exactly why I have tailored it to males and females.
Territories: For this particular territory, my game is going to played in various different
venues depending on which one the game player wants to choose, as this is a good way of
involving different parts of the country, In addition to this, I will be explaining all formats
that I will be choosing as venues, heres the list:
King Tuts Wah Hut, Glasgow
The Fleece, Bristol
The Deaf Institute, Manchester
The Lexington, London
Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Moles Club, Bath
The Full Moon/The Moon Club, Cardiff
Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh
These venues will enable the game player to have a broader experience and turn the game
into almost variety. The game play will show all features of the venues in different ways to
make it more realistic, for example, if Baths venue (The Moles Club) had a huge disco ball in
the middle of the venue then this would be included to the specifics, however small or big
the venue is. I have chosen a mixture of small and large venues on this occasion. The picture
below shows The Full Moon, Cardiff:

Comprehensive overview: The Target Audience I have been given from my brief was based on

feature cartoon version of bands, like the stone roses and so on. As my theme is British, the
characters clothing will be British themed, for example the venues in the game will be
British. The structure of the game is really important, the core gameplay of the Guitar Hero
games is a rhythm game similar to Konami's Guitar Freaks and to a lesser extent Harmonix's
previous music games such as Frequency and Amplitude. The guitar controller is
recommended for play, although a standard console controller can be used instead.
However, the guitar controller has been required for play ever since the inclusion of drum
and vocal parts in the series. The game supports toggling the handedness of the guitar,
allowing both left-handed and right-handed players to utilize the guitar controller. While
playing the game, an extended guitar neck is shown vertically on the screen the frets
horizontal, often called the note highway, and as the song progresses, coloured markers or
gems indicating notes travel down the screen in time with the music; the note colours and
positions match those of the five fret keys on the guitar controller. For this particular

heading, I am going to talk about how important it is to include characters in games, as well
as comparing three games that has links to my guitar hero: British special in various ways, I
will be using sketches of characters for my task. Characters is a very important process of
any games, on these specific games, FIFA, Call of Duty and Mario Kart, the characters are the
main focus of the game, zoning in and using them as the user interface.

the bottom, the player must play the indicated note by holding down the correct fret button
and hitting the strumming bar in order to score points. Success or failure will cause the on-
screen Rock Meter to change, showing how well the player is playing denoted by red,
yellow, and green sections. Should the Rock Meter drop below the red section, the song will
automatically end, with the player booed off the stage by the audience. Successful note hits
will add to the player's score, and by hitting a long series of consecutive successful note hits,
the player can increase their score multiplier. There is a window of time for hitting each
note, similar to other rhythm games such as Dance Revolution, but unlike these games,
scoring in Guitar Hero is not affected by accuracy; as long as the note is hit within that
window, the player receives the same number of points. The British theme throughout will
be included into the game. When playing through Career mode or in other parts of the
Guitar Hero games, the player has the option to select one of several pre-created avatar
characters, who will be shown performing on stage as the player attempts a song, but
otherwise has no effect on the gameplay. A certain number of characters are available at

9

the start of the game, but the player must spend in-game money earned by successful
performances to unlock other characters. Many of the characters reappear throughout the
series, with the character roster changing as new characters are added or removed. Standby
characters that have appeared in nearly all the games include the metal head Axel Steel,
extreme/Viking/thrash metal head Lars mlaut, punk rocker Johnny Napalm, alternative
rocker Judy Nails, and hard rocker Casey Lynch. The developers utilized these characters in
more detail within Warriors of Rock, where each was given a unique set list and venue
based on their musical style, as well as a unique power within the game's Quest mode.

All features: The game features of my game is:

Crowd control see the crowd react to your awesomeness up close in the new first-
person view.
Theyre cheering your name feel the rush of performing with your bandmates at your
back. Just dont screw up, or theyll join the crowd in booing you off stage quicker than a set
made up of new-album material.
Bring the house down take the stage for an intimate club gig and make your way to the
headline spot at two fictional festivals Rock the Block.
Your selection dont like whats on? Just switch over to another channel and play a new
song.
Rock royalties earn in-game currency in GHTV that you can use to play songs on demand
or unlock items like custom note highways, player cards and more.
Friends that rock together jam in your living room or online with your friends and other
people from all over the world. Check out the leader boards to see where you rank with
other Guitar Heroes.

used on FIFA, as you may know, FIFA is a Football game, so the characters on this occasion is
football players, the footballers and managers in addition are used to give the game player,
more of a real experience and FIFAs strapline Play Beautifully connotes this. On the cover
of FIFA is the football players, this shows the real point of sale and invites game user to use
the game using these players, as well as this, managers are used on the new game FIFA 17
for the first time ever, this also enables more of an experience using these characters allows
you to connect with others. I feel that FIFA have really got the players specific to how they
actually are in real life, for example, here is an image of a real life football player and the
same player that has been created from EA Sports. As you can see, on the left is the FIFA 17
game creation and on the right is the real life player called Antony Martial who plays for
Manchester United on the game and in real life. The quality of the character is world class as
you can see as the features are almost directly identical, this is specifically a main feature for
the point of sale using these characters to interact with the viewers. Here is an image of the
FIFA 17 hard copy to also back up my evidence of the game using these characters
specifically, Likewise, to this game, Mario Kart also uses its characters as part of a point of
sale, for example here is an image of Mario Karts cover, which also shows these characters
demonstrating that you can use them, Unlike FIFA 17, Mario Karts characters are made up
and created, this meaning that they are not fiction. Mario Kart enables you to choose a
character of your choice, here is a description of some of the characters that Mario Kart
uses in full description- Mario is a Medium character that is available from the start. Mario
has been a playable character since Super Mario Kart and so is Luigi. Ludwig is an unlockable
Medium character. Play and win first place in a Grand Prix cup to randomly unlock one of
the hidden characters. Ludwig makes his first playable appearance in Mario Kart 8. Lemmy is
an unlockable Featherweight character. Play and win first place in a Grand Prix cup to
randomly unlock one of the hidden characters. Lemmy makes his first playable appearance
in Mario Kart 8. Metal Mario is an unlockable Heavy character. Play and win first place in a
Grand Prix cup to randomly unlock one of the hidden characters. Metal Mario has been a
playable character since Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. My characters will feature cartoon version
of bands, like the stone roses and so on. As my theme is British, the characters clothing will
be British themed, for example the venues in the game will be British.

Here are my characters sketches for my actual game design logo:

Game Mechanics:
In addition to game mechanics, I am going to talk about my gameplay, which will be based
around the whole theme of Guitar Hero it will enable you to play as an individual as well as
on a multiplayer. My game will have an interactive model to talk you through the gameplay
so that you can enjoy a great gaming experience and learn more about the game, I have
done some comparisons with three other games using interactive model, Interactive Model-
Technology affordance, also known as manual operators is the richness of the
communication between the student and the instructor usually expressed in terms of the
input and output channels. Video games are the closest approximation in todays games.
The communication throughout a game, usually on a demo, allows you to know exactly
what you are doing step by step. FIFA offers this by giving you information as playing the
gaming, always occasionally did you know you if you press X you can pass the ball this
information means that you can learn quickly, this is also demonstrated on Call of Duty and
Mario Kart and enables you to play the game as well as learning on the job, the picture
below shows this, as explained above and it shows that you can communicate with the
viewer while the player. My game will also feature a whole variety of different ranges of
British songs that you can play by yourself/multiplayer.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I believe that my game has some great ideas, especially zoning it
in towards the British theme, in addition to this I think that because my game is a franchise I
have been able to create more additions to the game structure of guitar hero to make it
better overall, my game will feature on all gaming consoles, which is something that other
guitar hero games do no offer and know that I know what I am doing, I will need to conclude
all of my evidence and hand drawn drawings and give them in. I will be adding Ideas from
this assignment into my next assignment which will also feature a presentation so I will be
able to present my work and so on.
