to specialise in their chosen fields. I
realise now that in design as well as
in aviation, I have crossed conven-
tional boundaries. As a designer I am
just as excited by the challenges of
high architecture for civic events as
by low-cost construction for a mass
audience. Infrastructure also inspires
me in the same way as buildings or
even furniture. So for me, flight and
design are both universal activities.

Por supuesto, puede ocurrir lo contra-
rio, como en esos megaproyectos que
se levantan sorprendentemente rpido,
como el aeropuerto de Pekn, que es el

importantes. En este sentido, me viene

P: As que, para ti, dibujar es como

R: Desde que tengo memoria he estado
dibujando, y esta fue una de las razones
por las que quise ser arquitecto. Estaba
dispuesto a pagar por tener el privile-
gio de estudiar, de trabajar para poder
pagar las matrculas y mantenerme a
m mismo. Para m, hacer arquitectura
sigue siendo un puro lujo. Lo malo es
que, con el gran tamao de un estudio
internacional, surgen muchas otras
cosas que hacer. Pero sigo sintiendo
el gozo de proyectar.
P: S que no quieres hablar ahora sobre
tu legado, algo que le dejas a los histo-
riadores, pero desde tu primer proyecto
en Manchester has guardado todo tus
dibujos y maquetas, as que de algn
modo veo que ah hay un acervo de
trabajo que puede ser sustancial e im-
portante para el futuro.
R: Este material, que es orgnico y

explicar la importancia que tiene un
enfoque personal del diseo, suelo re-
petir el lema de que la calidad es una
actitud mental. En la creacin de un
edificio hay tres recursos fundamen-
tales: el dinero, el tiempo y la energa
creativa. Pero es siempre el elemento
creativo el que determina la calidad
del producto final, no la cantidad de
dinero o tiempo empleado. Algunos
de los mejores edificios que hay en el
mundo se han construido en un tiempo
rcord, y a menudo con presupuestos
muy reducidos. Algunos de los peo-
res se han eternizado y han costado
una fortuna. Esto no significa, por su-
puesto, negar la sabidura que hay en

fragmentos a los bordes de un espacio

ti crear un lugar mucho mejor para
trabajar, hacindolo ms estimulante
para los usuarios del edificio.
El proyecto de Hong Kong surgi
en la misma dcada, la de los aos
1970, que nuestro edificio para Willis
Faber en Ipswich. Las innovaciones
de este ltimo edificio lo hicieron so-
cialmente ms adecuado, y le dieron
la flexibilidad para integrar la nueva
tecnologa digital sin tener que recurrir
a un nuevo programa.
La historia de Stansted, el tercer ae-
ropuerto de Londres, es tambin una
historia de innovacin o reinvencin.
Buscando una nueva generacin de
terminales aeroportuarias, le dimos li-
teralmente la vuelta al modelo tradicio-
nal para crear una alternativa radical
que, desde entonces, se ha converti-
do en norma para otros diseadores
de aeropuertos a lo largo y ancho del
mundo. Este modelo aspira a devolver
al usuario el placer y el atractivo del
viaje en avin, adems de mejorar su
eficacia operativa.
Podra darte otros ejemplos de nues-
tros trabajos que han sido revolucio-
narios, aunque, en realidad, la mayor
parte de nuestros proyectos merezcan
el nombre de evolutivos. En otras pala-
bras, son proyectos construidos sobre
otros previos y pioneros, o desarrollos
adicionales de modelos preexistentes.
A una escala pica, el aeropuerto de
Pekn es un buen ejemplo de ello, pues
fue posible sobre la base de Stansted y
Chep Lap Kok de Hong Kong.

Q: Now I know that you do not want
to discuss legacy, that you would
