Chapter one
o namo bhagavate vsudevya
I offer my respectful obeisances unto the all-pervading
Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vsudeva.

narayaa namasktya / nara caiva narottamam


dev sarasvat vysa / tato jaya udrayet
gaea-ea-brahmea-dinea-pramukh sur
kumrdya ca munaya / siddh ca kapildaya 1
lakm sarasvat durg / svitr rdhik par
bhakty namanti ya avat / tam nammi paratparam 2

He to whom the gods headed by Gaea, ea,


Brahm, iva and Srya, the sages headed by the four
kumras, the perfected beings headed by Kapila-deva, He to
whom Lakm, Sarasvat, Durg, Svitr and the Supreme
Goddess rmat Rdhik all bow perpetually with devotion,
to Him who is transcendental to the transcendence I bow.

dhyyante satata santo / yogino vaiav sad


jyotir abhyantare rpam / atula ymasundaram 3

The saints, yogs and vaiavas always contemplate the


internal light, which is the incomparable beauty of the form
of ymasundara.

dhyye ta parama brahma / paramtmanam varam


nirha-mati-nirlipta / nirgua prakte param 4

I meditate upon that supreme Brahman,who is the Supersoul


and supreme controller, free from desire and attachment,
beyond the modes of material nature and transcendental.

sarvea sarva-rpa ca / sarva-kraa-kraam


sata nitya ca purusa / pura parm avyayam 5

He is the lord of all, the source of all forms, the cause of all
causes. He is the eternal being and the primeval supreme
and imperishible enjoyer.

magalya magalrha ca / magala magallayam


svecchmaya para dhma / bhagavanta santanam 6

He is evokes auspiciousness and He is worthy of auspicious


offerings. He is auspiciousness and He is the reservoir of all
auspiciousness. He acts according to His sweet will. He is the
supreme abode and the eternal all-opulent Personality of
Godhead.

stuvanti ved ya avan / nnta jnanti yasya te


ta staumi paramnanda / snanda nanda-nandanam 7

Whom the Vedas perpetually praise, whose limits they are


unable to fathom. Him I praise, the blissful reservoir of
supreme bliss, the son of Nanda.

bhakta-priya ca bhaktea / bhaktnugraha-vigraham


r-da ra rnivsa / r-ka rdhikevaram 8

He is the beloved of His devotees, the Lord of His devotees,


the form of mercy for His devotees, the bestower of
opulence, the Lord of Laksm, the abode of Laksm, r
Ka the Lord of Rdhik.

vedebhyo dadhi-sindhubhya / caturbhya sumanoharam


taj-jna-mantha-daena / sanirmathya nava navam 10

The nectar of knowledge of r Ka is drawn from the


ocean of knowledge and received through the guru ankara,
who is the guru of the gurus of the best among the yogs. It
is transcendental to spirit and matter and through the yogurt
oceans of the four Vedas that very enchanting knowledge is
taught. By churning those oceans with the churning rod of
the knowledge of Ka, that nectar appears to be ever new.

navanta samuddtya / natv ambho padmbujam


vidhi-putro nrado ham / paca-rtra samrabhe 11

Having extracted the fresh butter of Kas ll from that


ocean, and bowing down before the lotus feet of ambhu, I
Nrada, the son Brahm, begin this Paca-rtra, a work
expounding five truths of spiritual life.

r-ka-carambhoja-dhynaika-tna-mnasam 13

japanta parama brahma / ka ity akara-dvayam


sukhsane sukhsna / ka-dvaipyana munim 14

In the sanctified rama of ara Nryaa is within the


holy land of Bhrata, is a holy place of perfection devoted to
Lord Nryaa. There at the foot of a banyan tree which
awards highly beneficial perfections, was the plenary portion
of Lord Ka, the sage Ka-dvaipyana. He was a
devotee of Ka, wholly dedicated to r Ka, and his
mind was solely extended unto the Lords lotus feet. He sat
at ease in a simple sana, He was chanting two syllables k
and a which are the sound incarnation of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.

papraccha ukadeva ca / sarvvaja pitara muni


kraa ca purn / pura param avyayam 15

Then ukadeva Muni inquired from his all-knowing father, of


the origin of the Puras which are ancient, supreme and
imperishable.

bhagavan sarva-tattva-ja / veda-vedga-praga
yad yat prakra jna ca / nigha tra-sammatam 16

teu yat sra-bhta cpy ajnndha-pradpakam


tat tat sarva samlocya / m bodhayitum arhasi 17

r ukadeva Gosvm said:


O great lord, knower of everything.You have traversed and
fully comprehended the knowledge of the Vedas and their
branches. Since you have completely considered each one of
them kindly enlighten me with the very essence and best
amongst all those teachings which may act like a brilliant
lamp within the darkness of my ignorance.

sa pit jna-dt yo / jna tat ka-bhakti-dam


s bhakti param uddh / ka-dsya-prad ca y 18

He is a father who gives knowledge. Knowledge is that which


gives ka-bhakti. Bhakti is that supremely pure goddess
who bestows service to Ka.

tad eva dsya asta ca / skt caraa-sevanam


nitya goloka-vsa ca / purata stavana hare 19

That very praiseworthy service means to directly render


service to the Lords lotus feet,while eternally residing in
Goloka and offering praises in the presence of r Hari.

avan nimea-rahita / tat-pda-padma-daranam


avat tasyrddham lpa-sev-karma-niyojanam 20

Continually without the space of a moment taking the vision


of His lotus feet, Continually. utilizing ones work in His
service, ones speech in discussing His glories.

tena srdham viccheda-sthna parama-obhanam


bhaktn vachita vastu / sra-mla rutau rutam 21

Either being with Him or being separated from Him are


supremely sublime. He is the wealth desired by the bhaktas.
He is the quintessential subject heard throughout the Vedas.

putrasya vacana rutv / vysadevo jahsa sa


vijya jnina putra / param hldam pa ha 22

Hearing the words of his son, Vysadeva laughed


understanding the motive of his wise son and he became
exceedingly glad.
putra ubhia ktv / sarva-ja sarva-bhvana
yath-prpta guru-mukht / pravaktum upacakrame 23

Offering propitious blessings on his son, that all-knowing


personality, considering the welfare of all beings, started to
reply, in the same way that he himself had previously heard
from his own guru.

uka dhanyo si mnyo si / puya-rpo si bhrate


putrea bhavat smka / kula mukta pvanam 24

O uka, throughout this land of Bhrata you are glorified and


respected as the very image of purity. Because your honor
has accepted your birth as our son, our dynasty has become
delivered and liberated from material existence.

sa putra ka-bhakto yo / bharate suyaaskara


punti pus ataka / janma-mtrea llay 25

He who is a devotee of Ka is a truly a worthy son, and he


confers glory on the land of Bhrata. Merely by taking birth,
he easily redeems hundreds of men.

mt-mahn ataka / mtara mt-mtaram


sodarn bndhav caiva / bhtyn patn sahtmajm 26

He delivers a hundred maternal grandfathers and


grandmothers, together with his one mother, brothers,
friends, servants, wife, and daughter.

yat kany pratighnti / tad di-purua-trayam


kany-pradt vauro / jvanmukta sa-bharyaka 27

He whom he accepts a wife beginning with three persons,


the bestower of the girl, and the father-in-law, become
liberated even with their present bodies together with their
wives.
svaya vidht bhagavn / para ka-paryaa
ka-bhakto vaihas tu / tat-suto vaiava svayam 28

Lord Brahm Himself is the greatest of surrendered devotees


of r Ka, and Lord Brahms son Vaiha, Lord Kas
bhakta is a himself a Vaiava.

vaiavas tat-suta akti / ka-dhynaika-mnasa


parara ca tat-putra / ka-pdbja-sevay 29

jvan-mukto mah-jn / yogndrn guror guru


aha veda-vibhakta ca / r-ka-pdbja-sevay 30

His son akti is also a Vaiava, whose mind is exclusively


fixed on Lord Ka, and Parara, his son on account of his
service to Kas lotus feet, who in turn by his service to
Kas lotus feet achieved as his son the liberated soul and
very wise man, guru of gurus of the chiefs among yogs,
myself. By my service to r Kas lotus feet, I became the
divider of the Vedas.

gurur me bhagavn skd / yogndro nrado muni


guror gurur me ambhu ca / yogndrn guror guru 31

My guru is actually that all-opulent personality the sage


Nrada and the guru of my guru is ambhu, who is guru of
the guru of great yogs.

te puyena putra tva / puya-ri mrtimn


padmn mama pus ca / prako bhskara svayam 32

By the pious deeds of these personalities, you, O my son,


have appeared as the personification of our pious deeds, like
a veritable sun to shed light upon the lotuses of those
personalities and on me.

r-ka-caranmbhoja / padbja naradeayo


sarasvat namasktya / vakye jna santanam 33
After offering my obeisances to the lotus-like feet of r
Ka, as well as the lotus feet of Nrada Muni, Lord iva,
and my mother, the goddess Srasvat, I shall utter the
eternal wisdom.

ryat paca-rtra ca / veda-sram abhpsitam


paca-savdam ia ca / bhaktnm abhivachitam 34

Hear now the paca-rtra, which is the all-attractive essence


of the Vedas. It contains five sacred conversations which are
highly appreciated by the devotees.

prdhika priya uddha / para jnmta ubham


pur ko hi goloke / ata-rge ca parvate 35

supuye viraj-tre / vaa-mle manohare


purato rdhiky ca / brahma kamalodbhavam 36

This pure and auspicious nectar of transcendental knowledge


is more dear than the breath of life. Once in Goloka on the
hundred-peaked mountain at the foot of a enchanting
banyan tree on the bank of the very pious Viraj river, Lord
Ka spoke it to the lotus-born Brahm in the presence of
rimat Rdhik.

tam uvca mah-bhakta / stuvanta praata sta


paca-rtram ida puya / rutv ca jagat vidhi 37

praamya rdhik ka / prayayau iva-mandiram


bhakty ta pjaym sa / akara paramdart 38

O son, after He spoke this holy paca-rtra to that great


bhakta who offered prostrated obeisances and prayers of
praise, that preceptor of the worlds having heard, again
bowed down before r r Rdhik-Ka and departed for
the home of Lord iva. There he worshipped akara with
great devotion.

sukhsane samsina / svastha bhakta ca pjitam


papraccha vrt vinayo / vinayena sukhvaham 39

Lord iva sat equipoised in a easy posture, In his own natural


mild manner that sense-controlled personality inquired of the
news and welfare of his devotee to whom he also offered
worship.

sarva ta kathaym sa / pacartrdika ubham


vasanta vau-mle ca / svarge mandkin-tae 40

Lord Brahm told him all that had passed of the auspicious
Pacartra etc. as they sat at the foot of a banyan tree on the
bank of the celestial Gag which is named Mandakin.

yogndair api siddhendrair / munndrai ca stutam prabhum


jnmta tam uktv sa / brahma-loka jagma ha 50

Having related to iva that nectarean knowledge, after Lord


Brahm had been offered prayers of praise by the best
among the yogs, siddhas and munis, he then departed for
Brahma-loka.

ambhu ca kathaym sa / sva-iya nrada muni


nrade kathaym sa / pukare srya-parvani 51

m bhakta anurakta ca / puyhe muni-sasadi


pacartra ida uddha / bhramndha-dhvasa-dpakam

ambhu narrated it his own disciple, Nrada Muni, and in a


assembly of sages at Pukara, on the auspicious day of the
equinox, Nrada recited to me, his affectionate disciple, this
pure teaching of the Pacartra. That teaching is a like lamp
amidst the darkness for those in this world lost in the
confusion of senseperception.

teneda pacartra ca / pravadanti maniia 44
The word rtram indicates knowledge, and that knowledge is
understood by sages to be of five categories. For this reason
the wise describe it as Pacartra.

jna parama-tattva ca / janma-mtyu-jarpaham


tato mtyujaya ambhu / samprpa ka-vaktta 45

The first knowledge is the highest truth which removes birth,


death and old age. Therfore ambhu who has conquered
over death, has accepted it from the mouth of Lord Ka.

jna dvitya parama / mumuk ca vchitam


para mukti-prada uddha yato lna hare pade 46

The second supreme knowledge is desired by those desirous


to attain freedom from bondage. It is supremely pure and
bestows liberation, whereby one can merge with the lotus
feet of r Hari.

jna uddha ttya ca / magala ka-bhakti-dam


tad-dsya-dam abha ca / yato dsyam labhed dhare

The third pure knowledge is auspicious, for it bestows


devotion to Ka. That knowledge which gives service to
Hari is very desirable, because through it one can attain the
service of r Hari.

cathurtha yogika jna / sarva-siddhi-prada param


sarvasva yogin putra / siddhn ca sukha-pradam 48

The fourth knowledge is that of yoga, and it awards all


perfections. O son it is the be-all and end-all for the yogs
and it bestows the happines of attaining siddhis.

aim laghim vypti / prkmya mahim tath


itva vaitva ca / tath kmvayit 49
To become very minute, to become very light, to acquire as
one desires, to have an irrepressible will, to control the
material elements, to bring others under ones will, and to be
able to suppress desire.

sarva-ja dra-ravaa / para-kya-praveanam


kya-vyha jva-dna / para-jva-hara param 50

To be all-knowing, to hear from afar, to enter into the body of


another, to expand ones body into a group of bodies, to give
life, to take the life of another.

si-karttva-ilpa ca / sarga-sahra-kraa
siddhi ca oaa-vidha / jnin ca yato bhavet 51

The ability to create and to cause destruction of the creation.


These are sixteen kinds of perfection which can exist for
those who have the knowledge.

yad ia-dev my s / para sammoha-kraam 52

There is also an excellent knowledge which is spoken of ,


which is indeed related to the sensual pleasures of mankind.
The worshippable deity is the goddess of illusion. This
knowledge is the cause of supreme illusion.

viaye baddha-citta ca / sarvam indriya-sevanam


poaa sa-kuumbn / svtmana ca nirantaram 53

The mind is bound to the senses and everything is dedicated


to the service of the senses. One continually nourishes
oneself together with ones family.

prathama sattvika jna / dvitya ca tad eva ca


nirgua ca ttya ca / jna ca sarvata param 54
The first knowledge is in the mode of goodness, the second
is also certainly in that same mode. the third is free from the
modes and knowledge is in all ways considered supreme.

cathurtha ca rjasika / bhaktas tan nbhivchati


pacama tmasa jna / vidvs tan nbhivchati 55

The fourth is in the mode of passion, the devotee does not


desire it. The fifth is knowledge in ignorance. A wise man
does not desire it.

jna paca-vidha prokta / pacartra vidur budh


pacartra sapta-vidha / jnin jna-da param 56

Five kinds of knowledge are spoken of, and the wise know
them as Pacartram. there are seven kinds of wise men for
whom this Pacartra bestows supreme knowledge.

brhma aiva kaumra / viha kpila param


gautamya nradya / ida sapta-vidha smtam 57

There those in the lines of Brahm, iva, the four Kumras,


Vaiha, Kapila, Gautama and Nrada. These are
understood to be the five kinds of wise men.

a-pacartra ved ca / purni ca sarvaa


itihsa dharma-stra / stra ca siddhi-yoga-jam 58

Within the pacartra there are six stras comprehended,


the Vedas, all of the Puras, the historical works, the
dharma-stras and the siddhi and yoga-stras.

dv sarva samlokya / jna samprpya sakart


jnmta pacartra / cakra nrado munih 59

Having seen and considered all of these stras, after


receiving knowedge from akara, r Nrada Muni
composes this work of nectarean wisdom named r Nrada
Pacartra.
puya ppa-vighna-ghna / bhakti-dsya-prada hare
sarvasva vaiavn ca / priya prdhika sta 60

It invokes auspiciousness, destroys the obstacles of sin, and


bestows devotional service to r Hari. For Vaiavas it is all
in all, and it is more dear than their life-breath.

srabhta ca sarve / veda paramdbhutam


nradya pacartra / pureu sudurlabham 61

It is the quintessence of all the Vedas. The truths contained


in this very wonderful Nrada Pacartra are very difficult to
find even by a study of all the Puras.

sarvntartm bhagavn / brahma-jyoti santana

Resplendent Lord r Ka is the superlative in complete


perfection. He is the primeval Supreme Lord dwelling in
everyones heart and the source of the brahma-jyoti, Just as
He is in comparison with the demigods ,so is this stra
Nrada-Pacartra in comparison with other stras.

vaiavn ca siddhn / jnin yogin iva 63

As the goddess who is the original energy of this material


world is honored amongst other goddesses, as among
perfect Vaiavas, jns and yogs, iva is honored,

vivastnm indriyn / mana ca ghra-gminm


brahm ca veda-vidu / puyn ca gaevara 64

As the mind is honored from all sides by the swiftly moving


senses,as Lord Brahm is honored by the knowers of Vedic
wisdom, and as Lord Gaea is honored by pious men,

sanatkumro bhagavn / munn pravaro yath


bhaspatir buddhimat / siddhn kapilo yath 65

As the eminent and venerable devotee Sanatkumra is


honored amongst the sages, as Bhaspati amongst
intelligent men and as Kapila amongst the perfected beings,

yogndrn sat uddha / ir nryao yath


kavn yath ukra / paitn bhaspati 66

As the pure sage Nryaa is glorified amongst the saints


and elevated yogs. As ukra is amongst poets, and
Bhaspati among scholars of the Vedas,

sarit ca yath gag / samudr jalrava


vndvana vann ca / var bhrata yath 67

As the Gag is glorified among rivers, as salt water ocean is


among the seas, as Vndvana is glorified among the
glades, and Bhrata is among the Varas,

pukara tatra trthn / pjyn vaiavo yath


tmko yathptn / yath k puru ca 68

As among the trthas, Pukara is most honored, as the


Vaiava is honored among those worthy of honor, as the
revelation of the soul is most cherished among those things
worthy of attainment, and as K is the best among cities,

vk kalpa-vka ca / surabh kmadhenusu


pup parijta ca / patr tulas yath 69

As the desire tree is glorified amongst the the trees, and the
surabh among the jewel-like cows, as the parijta is the
best of flowers, and the tulas among all leaves,

mantr ka-mantra ca / yath vidy dhanev api


yath tejasvin sryo / minm amta yath 70
As the best of mantras is the Hare Kra mah-mantra, as
the most exaltedknowledge is the science of the bow, as the
sungod is exalted amongst potent beings and as immortal
nectar is the sweetest of sweet things.

dhr ca sthln / mahviu yath sta


sukmm paramu ca / gur mantra-tantra-da 71

O son, as the greatest of those who sustain and are great is


Mahviu, as paramu is the most minute of all subtle
things, and amongst guru he who awards the knowledge of
mantra and tantra is most revered,
putra ca sneha-ptr / naktr yath a
yath ghta ca gavyn / asyn dhnyam psitam 72

As the son is greatest object of affection, as the moon is the


most appreciated amongst the stars, as ghee is the best of
those things given by the cow, as grains are the most
desirable among the fruits of the earth,

str yath ved / sramn yath dvija


taijasn yath ratna / mukta-maikya-hrakam 73

As the Vedas are among the stras, as the brhmaa is


among the ramas, as the pearl and diamond are among
potent gems,

yath chandasi gyatr / durg aktimatv api


pati-vratsu lakmi ac / kam-lsu medhin 74

As the Gyatr is among sacred hymns, as Durg is amongst


powerful women, as Lakm is amongst devoted wives, and
as the earth goddess is amongst those exhibiting tolerance,

saubhgysu sundaru / rdh ka-priysu ca


hanumn vanar ca / pak garuo yath 75
As mat Rdhr is amongst fortunate and beautiful
women who are dear to Ka, as Hanumn is amongst
monkey warrors, and as Garua is amongst the birds,

vhann balavat / akarasya yath va


lagrma ca yantr / pjsu ka-pjanam 76

As the bull of ankara is amongst powerful carriers, as r


lagrma is amongst mystical maalas, and as the the
worship of r Ka is amongst all processes of worship,

ekda vratn ca / tapasv anana yath


yajn japa-yaja ca / satya dharmeu putraka 77

O dear son, as among vows the Ekda-vow, as amongst


penances, fasting, as amongst sacrifices, the chanting of
japa, and as amongst righteous deeds, truthfulness,

sula ca gun ca / puyeu ka-krtanam


obh susukha-dyeu / prabh tejasu sarvata 78

As among laudable qualities good conduct, as among


virtuous activities, the chanting of Kas names, as among
those things which bring happiness to the eye, beauty, and
as amongst brillliant things, illumination which shines in all
directions.

porn upakart / mitr janan yath


loknm api lokea / eo ngeu pjita 79

As among those who provide nourishment, give welfare and


friendship, the mother, as among people, the lord of all
people, and as among the snakes ea,

sudaraa ca astrn / vivakarm ca ilpinm


dharmiheu dayvanto / devariu mahatsu ca 80

viu-bhakteu vijeu / yathaiva nrado muni


eva sarva-streu pacaratra ca pjitam 81
As among weapons, Sudarana-cakra, as among craftmen,
Vivakarm, as among the most virtuous, Dayvn, and
among the sages among the demigods, who are the great
souls, and learned devotees of Lord Viu, Nrada Muni,
similarly among all scriptures this Pacartram is worshipped.

yath nipya pyua / nisph cya-vastuu


pacartram abhijya/ nnyeu ca sph satm 82

As when a person drinks nectar, there remains no further


desire for other things, so when saintly people understand
this pacartra they will hve no hankering for anything else.

sarvrtha-jna-bja cpy ajnndha-pradpakam


veda-sroddhta tattva / sarve samabhpsitam 83

It contains the seed which is the purpose of all knowledge,


which is the essential truths extracted from the Vedas That
knowledge acts like a brilliant torch to illuminate the
darkness of ignorance. It is equally pleasing to all men.

Chapter Two

atha r-ka-naivedya-praas
Here follows the glories of r Kas remnants:

kutra v pacartra ca / nradya ca dhmate
pradatta ambhun tta / tan me vykhyatum arhasi 1

ukadeva Gosvm said, Dear father, for what reason did


ambhu give the Pacartra to the intelligent Nrada, Kindly
tell me this.

r-vysa uvca
adhtya sarvn ved ca / vedgn pitur antike
jagma trtha kedra / supraasta ca bhrate 2
r Vysa said, After he had studied the Vedas, and their
branches in the presence of his father, he went to the
celebrated holy bathing place named Kedara within the land
of Bhrata.

himlayasya prvve ca / gag-tre manohare


siddhe nryaa-ketre / sarvvem abhivchite 3

It lies on the eastern side of the Himlayas on the charming


bank of the Gag, in the divine place named Nryaa-
ketra which is desired by all men.

tapa cakra sa munir / divya vara-sahasrakam


pitroktenaiva vidhin / satata sayata ucih 4

That sage performed austerity for one thousand celestial


years with controlled mind, in a purified state, as directed by
the preceptor, his father.

urvka-v ca / tapaso nte mah-muni


alpkar ca bahv-arth / parima-sukhvahm 5

At the climax of his austerities, the great sage heard a


message from the
sky, which though of few words was of great meaning, and
whose final effect was happiness.

The unembodied being said, If r Hari is worshipped, then


what is the necessity of austerity? And if r Hari is not
worshipped, what is the necessity of austerity? If r Hari is
within and without then what is the necessity of austerity?
And if r Hari is not within and without then what is the
necessity of austerity?

labha labha hari-bhakti vaiavokt supakv


bhava-nigaa-nibandha-cchedan 7

O! obtain, obtain the very ripened fruit of devotion to r


Hari as directed by the Vaiava. That devotion cuts the
shackes of bondage to the cycle of birth and death.

iti rutv ca sa munir viman svar-adi-tae


cakrrthnusandna na prasanna ca tan-mana 8

Upon hearing this, that sage by the bank of the celestial


river became perplexed. and his mind was not at peace, as
he pondered the meaning of those lokas.

ruroda svar-nad-tre / smara smara hareh padam


dadara puratas tta / brahma sa-kumrakam 9

On that bank of the heavenly river, He wept, remembering


again and again the feet of r Hari. Then before him, he
saw His father Brahm together with his young son,
Sanatkumara.

nanma sahas mrddhn / pitara ta sahodaram


pdyam arghya ca pradadau / javena sdara muni 10

At once the muni bowed his head to his father, and brother,
and quickly offered water to wash their feet and hands, and
gave them water to drink.

loka-dvayrtha papraccha / kumra jagat vidhim


sukhna susthra ca / sasmita ca gata-ramam 11

svtm-rma pra-kma / jnin ca guror gurum


sru-netra pulakito / bhakty praata-kandhara 12
When his father, the preceptor of all the worlds and
Sanatkumra were comfortably and peacefully seated, free
from any exhaustion, with smiling faces, he with tear in the
eyes, and hairs erect and stooped shoulders, inquired in a
devoted manner from as to the meaning of those two verses
from Brahm, who is fully -satisfied from within his self and
who is the guru of all gurus.

nradasya vaca rutv / dv ta ktara vidhi


putrea srddham ligya / vykhy kartu samrabhe 13

Upon hearing Nradas words, Vidhi seeing that he was


disturbed, embraced him warmly, and then began to make
an explanation.

he vatsa prva-lokrtha / nigha ruti-sammatam


vedrtha dvi-vidha uddha / vykhy kurvvanti vaidik

O dear son, those conversant with the Vedas explain in two


clear ways the meaning of the first verse, which is
confidential and approved by the Vedic teaching.

rdhito yadi harir / yena pus sva-bhaktita


ki tasya tapas vyartha / trtha-ptasya nrada 15

If r Hari is worshipped with devotion by a person, what is


them necessity of his performing penance. It is without
purpose, for, O Nrada, such a person purifies all the holy
places.

ka-mantropsakasya / jvan-muktasya bhrate


tapa copahsa-bja / yath carvvita-carvvaam 16

For a soul who is already liberated within his body, who is


worshipping the Lord through the chanting of the Ka
mantra, penance is a cause for ridicule, as is one who chews
some food which has already been chewed.
mantra-grahaa-mtrea / puru ata sta /
punti sva-sva-bhakta ca / bandhav cvallay 17

O son, simply by taking the mantra, he purifies a hundred


men and he easily purifies each of his friends and those
devoted to him.

na hi dharmo na hi tapa / r-ka-sevant param


parirama ca viphala / tapas vaiavasya ca 18

There is no religious practice or indeed any penance greater


than the service of r Ka, thus for a Vaiava, strenuous
endeavor to perform austerities is useless.

ka-mantropsakasya / trtha-ptasya putraka


rtha-snnam anaana ca / vedeu ca viambanam 19

For a person who worships with the Ka mantra and who is


capable of purifying the holy bathing places, to visit the holy
places to take bath and fast is described in the Vedas to be
absurd.

prvva-karmnurodhena / yat ppa vaiavasya ca


mantra-grahaa-mtrea / nata vahnau yath tam 20

Whatever sinful reaction that may be remaining for a


Vaiava on account of his performance of previous
activities, merely by the utterance of that mantra it is
destroyed as dry grass is consumed in a fire.

pavitra paramo vahni / pavitra cmala jalam


pavitra bhrata vara / trtha yat tulas-dalam 21

punti llayaitni / uddha ka-pryaa


upaspara ca bhaktasypy ete vchanti sdaram 22

Fire is supremely pure, and pure water is pure, Bhrata-


bhmi is holy, and a tulas leaf is a trtha, yet that pure
personality who has dedicated his all to Ka easily purifies
these. They respectfully desire the touch of the bhakta.

bhaktasya pda-rajas / sadya pt vasundhar


na hi ptas tri-bhuvane / r-ka-sevakt para 23

The earth becomes instantly purified by the dust from the


bhaktas feet. Certainly throughout the three worlds, there is
no greater purifier than the servant of Ka.

lagrma-il-cakre / karoti ka-pjanam


tat-pdodaka-naivedya / nitya bhukte ca ya pumn 24

sa vaiavo mah-ptas / tan-mantropsaka uci


punti pus ataka / janma-mtrt sa-bandhavam 25

That greatly purified Vaiava man who performs worship of


Ka through the cakras of lagrma-il and regularly
respects the Lords footwash and food-remnants, and who
after taking bath, performs worship of Kas mantra,
simply by taking birth, purifies a hundred men in addition to
his relatives.

vatsa lokasyaika-pda / vykhyta ca yathgamam


vykhy karomy anya-pda / yath-jna nimaya 26

Dear son, I have explained the first line of this verse in


accordance with the previous authorities, now I shall explain
the other line according to my knowledge, now hear with
attention.

nrdhito yadi harir / yena pusdhamena ca


ki tasya tapas vyartha / niphala tat-pariramam 27

If some low-class man does not worship r Hari, what can


he attain through his penance? It is purposelessly done, for it
will not give any result except the perspiration of the ascetic.

vratny eva hi danni / tapsy anaanni


vedopayukt yaj ca / karmi ca ubhni ca 28
na nipunaty abhakta ca / sra-kumbham ivpag

Vows, charitable deeds, austerities, fasting, as well as


sacrifices prescribed in the Vedas and other auspicious
activities, cannot purify a nondevotee, as a wine-stained pot
cannot be purified even by the waters of the Gag.

abhakta-spara-mtrea / trthni kampitni ca


abhakta-bhra-dukhena / kampit s vasundhar 29

Simply by the touch of an abhakta, the holy bathing places


tremble, indeed out of the grief of bearing the burden of an
abhakta the earth herself, shakes.

lokrddha kathita vatsa / kicid eva yathgamam


tasyrddhasypi vykhyna / karomy iti nimaya 30

I have described somewhat the meaning of the first half of


the verse according to authority, dear son, and now I shall
explain the second half, now hear me attentively.

veda-sra ka-mata / mampi na hi kalpan


antarbahir yadi harir / ye pus mahtmanm 31

svapne jgarae avat / tapas te ca niphalam


sa eva viu-tulyo hi / tad-ao bhrate mune 32

This is the essence of the Vedas and it is the opinion of r


Ka; it is not my concoction. For those great souls for
whom whether asleep or awake Hari is forever within and
without, penance is a fruitless endeavor. such a person has
certainly realized his qualitative equality with Viu and is
his empowered representative within the land of Bhrata, O
sage.

tasya rak-nibandhena / tad-abhyse sudaranam


dhyna-mtrea nippa / punti bhuvana-trayam 33
By attaching oneself to his protection in his presence and
simply by contemplating his handsome countenance, one
becomes free from sin. for he can cleanse the three worlds.

dattv cakra ca rakrtha / na nicinto janrdana


svaya tan-nikaa yti / ta drau rakaya ca 34

Since Janrdana has awarded him His cakra for protection,


he has no anxiety. He goes in his personal presence with the
purpose of seeing Him as well as for protection.

tat-paro hi priyo nsti / ksya paramtmana


na hi bhaktt para ctm / pra cvayavdaya 35

na lakm rdhik v / svayambhu ambhur eva ca


bhakta-pro hi ka ca / ka-p hi vaiav 36

For the Supreme Soul, Ka, there is no one other than that
devotee who is dear, not His body, His life-breath, His limbs,
not Lakm, Rdhik, Sarsvat, nor even Brahm or iva.
Kas life-breath is His bhakta and The Vaiavas life
breath is Ka.

vykhyta ca tri-pda ca / he munndra yathgamam


ea-pdasya vykhyna / karomty nimaya 37

O best of sages, three lines of the verse have explained


according to the guidance of authority; now I shall explain
the remaining line. Please hear with attention.

nntarbahir yadi harir / ye pus ca nrada


tem api tapo vyartham / antarmmalina-cetasm 38

For those persons who are unable to see Hari within and
without penance is useless because their internal
consciousness is contaminated.

ki taj-jnena tapas / vratena niyamena ca


trtha-snnena puyenpy abhakta-mha-cetasm 39
For nondevotees whose consciousness is bewildered by
sense pleasure what is the benefit of having knowledge of
Hari, of performing penance, following vows and regulations,
of in holy places, and other pious deeds

ka-bhakti-vihnebhyo / dvijebhya svapaco mahn


karo mlecca-nivaha / sva-karmcaraena ca 40

A dog eater acting in accordance with his prescribed duty,


even though he earns his subsistance by a degraded
livehood, living like a hog, is greater than such twice-born
men who are bereft of Ka-bhakti.

sva-dharma-hna-vipr cpy abhakya-bhakanena ca


nitya nitya vidharmea / patita svapacdhama 41

Learned brhmaas who have abandoned their prescribed


duties, by wrongly eating that which is not to be eaten,
become perpetually pfallen to the position of the vile
caala.(dogeater)

brhma sva-dharma ca / santata ka-sevanam


nitya te bhujate santas / tan-naivedya pdodakam 42

The prescribed duty of the brhmaas is always render


service to r Ka.Those saintly men regularly eat the
remnants of His food-offering, and drink the water with
which his feet are bathed.

na dattv haraye yas tu / yadi bhukte dvijdhama


anna via-sama / mtra-sama toya vidur budh 43

The wise understand, that if a fallen brhmaa enjoys some


food without offering to r Hari, that food becomes like
stool, and the water like urine.

bhukte sva-bhakya kola ca / mleccha ca


svapacdhama
vipro nityam abhakya ca / bhukte ca patitas tata 44

A hog eats for his own pleasure as do a mleccha and a lowly


svapaca. The vipra who always eats such inedible foods is
thereby fallen (from his status as a bramaa).

lokam eka ca vykhyata / yath-jna ca nrada


sannibodha parasyrtha / vykhyna ca yathocitam 45

O Nrada, this one verse has been explained in accordance


with transcendental knowledge. Now be informed of the
correct meaning of the other verse.

tapaso virama brahman / vyartha bhakta-tapo dhruvam


akara ca guru ktv / hari-bhakti labhciram 46

O brhmaa, stop your practice of austerities. It is truly of no


benefit for a bhakta to perform austerities. Now accepting
akara as your guru, before long you must take up the
devotional service of Hari.

supakva-hari-bhakti ca tara bhava-tarae


gurur eva para brahma / karadhra-svarpaka 47

The very perfect devotional service to r Hari is is the boat


in which can cross over this ocean of repeated birth and
death, and r Guru who is undoubtedly the Supreme Lords
representative is the personified captain.

ity evam uktv tv dev / prajagma sarasvat


vykhytas tad-abhiprya / ki bhya kathaymi te 48

Having spoken in this way to you, the goddesss Sarasvat


departed, and this explanation by me was her plan. What
further can I tell you?

brahmaa ca vaca rutv / jahsa yogin guruh


sanat-kumro bhagavn / uvca pitara uka 49
O uka, having heard these words of Lord Brahm,
Sanatkumra, the guru of all yogs, laughing, spoke to his
father.

prvva-lokasya vykhyna / na buddha iun may
putra iyam abodha ca / yukta bodhayitu puna 50

Sanatkumra said, I am but a child and have not


understood your explanation of the first verse. Since I, your
son and disciple am puzzled and engaged in self-realization
please enlighten once again.

nrdhito harir yena /tasya vyartha tapo yadi
tasyrahitau tau dvau/ tapasa ca sthala kuta 51

If for one by whom Hari is worshipped, penance is


unnecessary, and for one by whom Hari is not worshipped,
penance is unnecessary, since both of such persons are
unfit, where is the place for penance?

tapa kurvvanti ye tta / tva m bodhaya balakam 52

for those who perform tapas Dear father, please inform me


who am but a little boy.

putrasya vacana rutv / sandigdho jagat guru


dadhyau ka-pdmbhoja / para kalpa-taru uka 53

Hearing these words of his sonthe guru of all the worlds


became confounded. Then O uka he meditated on the lotus
feet of Ka which are a supreme desire tree.

kaa sacintya pdbja / prpa rddhntam psitam


vykhy kartu samrebhe / vidht jagatm api 54
For a moment he thought of those lotus feet, and he got the
desired conclusion. Then the creator of the worlds began to
give his explanation.

dhanyo ham bhavata putrt / jnin ca guror guro
viu-bhaktc ca dharmiht / sat-putrc ca pit sukh 55

Brahm said, I am blessed. A father becomes happy by


having such a pure son such as your good self, for you are a
very virtuous devotee of Viu, and the guru of the gurus of
all wise men.

dhanyo si paito si tva / hari-bhakto si putraka


mampi saphala janma / jvana ca tvay budha 56

You are blessed, for you are a highly learned scholar, and a
devotee of r Hari, little son. My very birth and also my life
is meaningful on account of you, O wise one.

nibodha prvva-lokrtha / punar vykhy karomi ca


tathpi cen na santoo / bhavn vykhy kariyati 57

Be informed of the meaning of the first loka. Again I shall


explain. If however you are not fully satisfied, your grace can
yourself give the explanation.

-abda samyag arthe ca / rdhita prpta-vcaka


saprpta ca harir yena / vyarthas tasya tapa rama 58

The syllable which precedes rdhita indicates the


completeness of worship and that Hari has been possessed
by the the worshipper. Thus he by whom Hari has been
completely made a possession, for him to perform penance
is an unnecessary labor.

yena samyag prakrea / saprpto harir vara


svapne jne na ca jtas / te vyarthas tapa rama 59
For those by whom the supreme Lord Hari, who is not to be
known through dream or empiric knowledge, has been
completely attained, for them austerities are without any
result except the trouble they take.

r-ka-vimukha mha / dvijam eva nardhamam


trtha dna tapa puya / vrata naiva punti tam 60

Bathing in holy waters, giving penance, performance of


austerities, pious activities and vows, cannot purify a foolish
degraded man who is inimical to r Ka even though he
has taken second birth.

ya ca mhatamo loke / ya ca bhakti para gata


tv ubhau sukham edhete / tapa kurvvanti madhyam 61

Both he who is the greatest fool in the world, and he who


attainedthe highest level of devotion can become happy. It is
those who are in the intermediate stage who should perform
penance.

devn any ca bhajate / hari jnti tat-para


tapa karoti ta prptum / kkan madhyamo jana 62

The intermediate devotee who is wholly dedicated to r


Hari offers honor to the other gods although he knows Hari
to be supreme. Desiring Him, he performs penance in order
to obtain Him.

prktand anurg ca / gh sasra-savta


tapa karoti r-ka-pda-padmrtham psitam 63

At first one who is attached as a householder, surrounded by


family and other worldly encumbrances, performs austerities
desiring the wealth of r Kas lotus feet.

para r-ka bhajana / dhyna tan-nma-krtanam


tat-pdodaka-naivedya-bhakaa sarva-vchitam 64
Being wholly absorbed in r Ka, His worship, His
meditation and the utterance of His names, when he drinks
His footwash and eats the foods offered to Him, all his
desires become satisfied.

atva mho vipra ca / prktand guru-doata


tmaso hi na jnti / ri-ka tri-gut param 65

At first on account of a fault in his acceptance of a guru, a


very foolish brhmaa on account of the mode of ignorance,
does not understand that r Ka is transcendental to the
three moods of material nature.

ajnd athav jnd / sat-sagd eva prktant


bhukte naivedyam asya / kasya paramtmana 66

Then either knowingly or unknowingly, beginning with the


association of saintly devotees, he eats the remnants of food
which has been offered to the Supreme Lord r Ka who
resides in the heart of all living entities.

sa ca mukto bhavet putra / mucyate sarva-ptakt


sa yti divya-ynena / goloka lokam uttamam 67

My dear son, becoming liberated, and freed from all sins, he


then travels upon a celestial aeroplane to the transcendental
planet of Goloka.

u vatsa pravakymi / prvvkhyna purtanam


atva surava cru / madhura mukti-da param 68

Listen, dear son, as I relate to you an ancient history. It is


very charming, extremely pleasant to hear and awards the
highest liberation.

knyakubja sukubdha ca / brhmao grma-yjaka


devalo va-vha ca / mah-mha ca ptak 69
There was a very enlivened brhmaa in the city of
Knyakubja, who was a pjr and performed sacrificial
ceremonies on behalf of that city. He was also a great fool
and a sinner and his name was Vavha.

svapne jne na jnti / puya v ka-pjanam


ka-bhakta-sahlpa-darana-sparana ubham 70

babhva prktant tasya / kaa-mtra sudurlabham


tena puyena naivedya / lebhe kasya brhmaa 71

Whether in wakefulness or in dream, He knew nothing


except pious activities or worship of Ka. For a brief
moment his life became auspicious, filled with the
association, the sight and conversation with devotees of
Ka. On account of that pious association, that brhmaa
obtained the very rare food which had been offred to r
Ka.

pitu puyena putra ca / mrge patita-kalpakam


svaya bhuktvvaea / ca ptita vaiavj jant 72

On account of his fathers purification, his son spontaneously


ate the remnants which had been improperly thrown away
on the road by a Vaisava person.

susnigdhkata-jra ca / rajas mirita param


gacchatas tatra viprasya / patita bhakya-vasttu ca 73

naivedyopari kasya / tvar-yuktasya putraka


tad vastu bhukta viprea / ka-naivedya-miritam 74

O son, it was very soft, unbroken, old and completely mixed


with dust. Going there where that food-remnant of the vipra
had fallen, the vipra quickly placed it on the offering of
Ka, and mixed that item with the offering of Ka.

saputrea kubdhrttena / bhuktv tau yayatur gham


viprocchia ca bubhuje / tasya patn pati-vrat 75
Having eaten that together with his excited son those two
returned to their home, and there the brhmaas chaste
wife also ate from the vipras remnants.

parasparnusabandht / pavitr s babhva ha


jvanmukto brhmaa ca / babhva ca saputraka 76

By the close association which they had with one another,


she also became purified. That brhmaa together with his
son became liberated even within their present bodies.

klena tena puyena / vyghra-bhukta ca knane


srddha ca vyghra-putrbhy / goloka prayayau dvija
pativrat saha-mt / bhart srddha jagma s 77

In due course of time on account of the pious deed that


brhmaa was devoured by a tiger in the jungle. Then
hewent together with the tiger and his son to Goloka. His
chaste wife voluntarily accepted death along with her master
and she also accompanied him.

r-ka-naivedya-praasana iti dvityo dhyya
Thus in the r Nrada Paca-rtra, the nectarean essence of
knowledge, in the first knowledge, second chapter, entitled
the glories of the food offered to r Ka.

Sanatkumra said, O father, what an astonishing and


exalted glorification of the food offered to the all-pervasive
Lord r Ka. Now kindly describe it in detail.

Brahm said, Once that brhmaa in a jubilant mood, with a


countenance and eyes which blossomed like flowers set out
with his son to the home of his kinsman.

saputro brhmao mrge / kut-pipsrdita suta

He was invited for a wedding and he bore many


presentations. Then having drunk and eaten in the relatives
house, the brhmaa again departed happily for his own
home with his son. On the road the son became afflicted by
hunger and thirst, and seeing the charming Candrabhga
river, he said to his father, After bathing here, I shall eat. O
dear father, while on the road hunger and thirst increase
very powerfully.

bhayakara vanam ida / sampe sarita sta 6

Hearing the words of his son, the brhmaa replied to him,


O son, this forest by the bank of the river is dangerous.

sughra gaccha grmnta / puro ramya-sarovaram


tatra sntv ca bhokvo / gaccha vartma yath-sukham 7

Very swiftly let us go to the next town. There before that


delightful lake, we shall eat after first taking bath. At your
pleasure, let us take to the road.
ttasya vacana rutv / jahsa ca cukopa ca
pitara vaktum arebhe / rakta-pakaja-locana 8

Hearing the words of his father, the son laughed, becoming


angry, and with eyes like red lotuses, he began to reply to
his father.

blo ha daa-var yas / tva ca vddha ca jna-da


pit dadti putrya / jna sarvatra bhtale 9

I am but a boy of ten years, whereas you are elderly and a


giver of wisdom. Everywhere on the earth the father gives
knowledge to the son.

aho duratyaya klo / vddho vadati blavat


katha prktanam ullaghya / brhi tta duratyayam 10

O how inscrutable is time! When an elder speaks like a boy.


Father why do you speak in such an inscrutable way, thus
stepping over the ancients.

prktand sukha-dukha ca / roga oka bhaya pita


sumtyur apamtyur v / ciryur alpa-jvana 11

yatra kle ca yan mtyur / bhavana ubha-karma ca


nyndhika kaa nsti / niedha kena vryyate 12

O father, we have heard from the words of the ancients that


an individuals happiness and distress, his disease,
lamentation and fear, his auspicious or inauspicious death,
whether he has a long life or a brief one, all these and at
which time his death will take place is decided by the star of
his birth and his good deeds. There is no question of a
inferior or advantageous moment. Therefore why are you
hindering me with your prohibitions?

yasya haste ca yan-mtyur / vidht likhita pur


na ca ta khaitu akta / svayam viu ca akara 13
The cause of death which Brahm, the creator, has already
written in the persons hand, not even Viu Himself or
akara is able to change.

tta vyartham adhta te / durbuddher janma niphalam


subuddhe saphala janma / tat-kaa jvana sukham 14

Father your studies have been in vain and your foolish birth
hs been fruitless. A fruitful birth is the result of good
intelligence and his life is full of happiness from that moment
onwards.

yena ukl-kt has / uk ca hari kt


mayur citrit yena sa me rak kariyati 15

He who makes the swans white, the parrots green and the
peacocks multicolored shall protect me.

yena kena vivni / csakhyni ktni ca


carcara yo raket / sa me rak kariyati 16

r Ka who creates the uncountable universes, and who


is able to protect all moving and unmoving beings, shall give
me protection.

ghorraye sukha ete / yo hi kena rakita


nirbandho pi sthito yasya / maraa tasya mandire 17

He who is protected by r Ka lies down peacefully in the


terrible jungle. But one situated within his home will die if he
does not have Ka as his friend.

ya ete nga-yysu / prktann magalhita


yo nga-bhakito bhogt / sa mto garuntike 18

On account of the auspicious deeds of his previous life, the


Lord who lies down on a bed of snakes. One who is being
eaten by snakes is protected from the hoods of snake or he
may die in the presence of Garua,
samudre ca mriyate / ngni-ro vinale
na astrea na cstrea / yur marmmni rakati 19

He does not die in the ocean, as a mass of flames does die if


placed within poisonous flames. He does not die by weapon
nor by missile. The Lord protects His duration of life and his
vulnerable points.

nprpta-klo mriyate / viddha ara-atair api


tgrepi saspa / prpta-klo na jvati 20

If his time has not arrived, he will not die, even though he
may be pierced with hundreds of arrows. But if his time has
arrived, even if touched by the tip of a blade of grass, he will
live no longer.

kacid garbhe ca mriyate / kacid bhmi-ha-mtrata


kacid yauvana-kle ca / kacid eva hi vrddhake 21

Some soul dies while in the womb, some one while he has
just touched the ground. Somone in youth, and another in
old age.

kacid ciry rog cpy arog cpi kacana


kacid dhan daridra ca / kacid eva hi karma 22

Some man may live a long life although diseased, another


undiseased man may also live long. Some die rich, some die

Some person may live till the end of the kalpa. Another may
just live a long life by ordinary standards. On account of
previous actions, some person may become immortal, and
another may be born as the most powerful

By his deeds someone becomes an emperor and travels in a


celestial chariot. Another takes birth among the species of
insects and moths, and yet another is born in the animal
kingdom.

kacid gajendra-gm ca / pau-yy ca kacana 25

Someone becomes a renunciant, someone a murderer,


someone has the graceful gait of the king of elephants,
another the awkward gait of a buffalo.

Some person gives gems in charity, another is a mendicant.


One wears a fine silken raiment, another man a tattered
shabby cloth.

kacin nagno py anhr / sudh-bhoj ca kacana

Some man goes naked and fasts. Another feasts upon


nectar. Someone is distinguished with handsome features.
Another is covered with sores of leprosy that ooze pus.

kacid drgho madhyama ca / kacit khaja ca vmana

Some person is hunch-backed and crippled, deaf and blind


in one eye. Another is tall and slender, and yet another is a
lame dwarf.

kacit ka ca gaura ca / ymala ca sva-karma


kacid bhakty ca prpnoti / ka-dsya sudurlabham 29
Some persons complexion is black, somone is fair, another
is swarthy each according to their works. And someone
through pure devotion can achieve the most rare
achievement of service to Ka.

brahmaa parama sthna / janma-mtyu-jar-haram


kacit prpnoti parama / brahma-loka nirmayam 30

Some one achieves the the supreme situation of


transcendence of the spiritual planet which takes away birth,
death and old age, and is free from inebriety.

kacit svarga indra-pada / iva-loka sva-karma


kacit svargam indra-lokam / yama-loka ca kacana 31

Some person attains the heavenly opulences of Indra,


another by his deeds, enters the planet of iva. Someone
achieves heaven planet of Indra and another, Yama-loka.

kacic ca narake ghore / prpnoti kleam ulbaam


tito yama-dtena / kuditas tita sad 32

Somone else receives terrible sufferings within the terrible


planets of hell. There hungry and thirsty, he is tortured by
the servants of Yamarja,

bhukte vi-mutra-ka ca / tan-mala lem gara


vasm
kura-dhre tapta-taile / vahnau te jale sthale 33

He eats excrement, urine, worms and their stools, mucous,


bile and fat.
He becomes placed on a razors edge, in boiling oil, in cold
winds and freezing water.

O father, that sinner experiences terrible suffering which is
appropriate for his former deeds. Then he takes birth in
order to enjoying the remainder of his enjoyments which
were due as a result of his activities.

vydhi-yukta pramucyate / tay ced varecchay


yad-bhayd vti vto ya / sryas tapati yad-bhayt 35

That person who was full of disease becomes liberate from


that condition by the desire of the Supreme Lord. For is out
of fear of Him only that the wind blows and the sun heats out
of fear of Him.

yasyjay si-vidhau / krmo nanta dadti ca 36

sa ca sarva ca brahma / llay cevarecchay


yasyjay mah-bht / sarvvdhr vasundhar 37

Lord Indra sends rain, the firegod heats, and death wanders
amongst the living entities by His order. And by Supreme
Lords desire to enact the process of creation, the tortoise
easily holds up the unlimited universes. By His desire the
earth, who is very much afraid sustains all the living entities.

svaya vidht bhagavn / dhyyate yam ahar-niam 38

And upon Him that the earthgoddess, richly endowed with all
kinds of fruits, grains and vegetables, the personified
Himlaya, covered by gems, and the powerful creator Lord
Brahm himself, meditate upon both by day and night.

sahasra-vaktro ya stauti / dhyyate bhajate sad 39

Upon Him, iva himself, the conqueror over death,


contemplates and worships. Upon Him the thousand-
mouthed ea forever contemplates and adores.

Unto Him, her desired Lord, Goddess Sarasvat offers


prayers of praise. O father, the goddess Lakm who dwells
in the midst of lotus flowers, spontaneously renders service
to His lotus feet.

stuvanti ved satata / svitr veda-mtk 41

Unto Him, in great fear the goddess of illusion offers prayers,


as also does Durg, the destroyer of misfortune. Unto Him
the Vedas eternally offer praise of praise together with
Svitr, mother of the Vedas.

dhyyante ca bhajante ca / bhakt santo hi santatam


kecid vadanti ya brahma / bhagavanta santanam 43

It is He whom the most exalted amog the siddhas, the sages,


and the yogs headed by Sanaka, the best among emperors,
demons and gods as well as men, contemplate and adore
and whom the saintly devotees perpetually address as the
Absolute Truth, the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead.

kecit tu sarvva-rpa ca / sarvva-kraa-kraam 44

Some address Him as the first progenitor, others, as the


basis of the the brahma-jyoti. Some describe Him as the
origin of all form and as the cause of all causes.

snanda paramnanda / govinda nanda-nandanam

Some describe Him as He who accepts multi-forms according


to His will, and who takes such forms to show mercy to His
bhaktas. Some speak of Him as the lustrous sublimely
beautiful dark form which enchants the mind, and as He who
who is supremely blissful and is accompanied by blissful
bhakta , as the son of Nanda nd as Govinda, who awards
pleasure to the cows the senses and the mind. Dear father,
just worship that Supreme Brahman, and perpetually
remember that Lord of godly beings.

the candrabhga and drank the clear water, enjoying the
sweet flavor of the water

The father upon hearing those words of his son shed tears of
joy and kissed the cheek of his son and embraced him.

meditation and worship. Seeing that his father had bathed,
the son set out into the jungle.

(dates) as well as the karajaka, jmbra and the beautiful

Having picked all these fruits and flowers, he saw before him
a lake with crystal clear waters and mind-stealing white lotus
flowers.

There were also red lotuses blossoming at the waters edge.


At the head of the lake he put down all the fruits and flowers,
and drank the clear water.Then he picked the rare lotuses
which were of a rich red color, and he also picked the
ripened fruits of the lotus.

with creepers of mallik, malat, kunda, ythik and

The boy who already had many flowers, picked the beautiful
flowers, and then his leaf-plate of fruits and flowers became
a heavy burden.

He did not eat the fruits, being fearful of breaking the


principles of religion and doing some irreligious deed.

Before him the child saw the terrible den of a tiger. In great
fear, he called out, Father Father! again and again.

Out of fear the son of the vipra chanted these ten names,

again he saw the beautiful lake.

In the pure water of the lake, he offered the flowers and


fruits to the all-opulent Personality of Godhead, Lord r
Ka, the Supersoul.

He performed worship of Ka, while meditating on His


lotus feet. The tiger did not come near but watched the boy
from a distance.

The boy also watched the tiger, with his alarming prominent
jaws, his distorted teeth, his dreadful eyes and his massive
belly.

Looking from a distance at the tiger, he stayed on the shore
of the lake and meditated upon the lotus feet of Ka which
remove the distresses of birth, death and old age.

kualin to the thousand-petal-lotus, he then meditated on
His master, the Supreme Lord, situated in his heart.

He saw the pure beauty of two-handed r Ka, dressed in


a yellow dhoti, and smiling. Displaying the effulgence of a

The beauty of His pastimes and His abode was more


enchanting than that of a million cupids and more pleasing
to the minds of the living beings than a million full and new

His sublime figure was the proper object of the sense of sight
and awarded happiness, as He showed compassion upon the
devotees. His entire body was sprinkled with the pulp of

His eyes resembled blossoming lotuses. r Rdh was


seated upon his chest. Garlands of mdhav flowers were

With His right hand He held a jewel lotus, and with His left
hand He held a brilliant mirror made of gems.

Jewel earrings illuminated His cheeks, and the Kausthuba,


the king of gems, radiated brilliantly upon His handsome

His rows of teeth mocked the luster of rows of pears, and He


was decorated by a garland of mlati flowers intertwined
with forest flowers, which hung to His knees.

He was offered prayers of praise by the Vedas personified


headed by the goddess Sarasvat and also by Brahm and

the vipra, morning, noon and evening, becomes freed from

Lord Brahm said, Hearing these prayers of the brhmaa,


the all-opulent Lord Janrdana was very pleased, and
showed His mercy, for He is well known as the Lord of His
devotees and He who is merciful unto them.

dadara brhmaa-vau / tam eva muni-pugavam


tejas sukha-dyena / sundara sumanoharam 3

The reservoir of limitless opulence, who resides within the


hearts of all and within every atom, the primeval sage
Nryaa who appears as the son of Nanda Mahrja,
appeared in that very spot by the lake, and gazed upon the
brhmaa boy, who was indeed a powerful sage. By His
power the Lord became delightfully manifest in a perceivable
form which was sublime enchanting and beautiful.

He wore a yellow cloth, and His body had the luster of a


newly arrived stormcloud. His entire body was sprinkled with

His gracious smiling face which ws free from all disturbance


was adorable to all. His form shone and He wore a necklace
of pure crystals.

Seeing Him, the powerful brhmaa son quickly bowed his


head and the Lord murmured auspicious benedictions and
placed His hand on the boys head.

The best among sages being kind to the destitute spoke


compassionately to him words of welfare, and actual truth
which were the essence of morality and which brought about
happiness in the end.

yasmin kule ca jto si / tad-dhanya supraamsitam 8

The sage Nryaa said, O vipra, fortunate soul, your life is


fruitful, and the family in which you were born is glorious and
praiseworthy.

dhruva ysyasi goloka / paramnandam psitam 9

You should worship the supreely blissful son of Nanda


together with His blissful abode and devotees. Thus you shall
actually go to the planet of the cows which is most desirable
and blissful.

tat-kula pvana dhanya / yaasya ca nirpadam


yasmin svaya bhavn jta / puya ka-pryaa 10

That family is purifying, glorious, celebrated and free from


calamity in which your grace has taken voluntarily birth, for
you are a pure soul wholly dedicated to Ka.

naivedya patita mrge / jra vpada-bhakitam


bhuktv tavai buddhi ca / ksa-bhaktir babhva ca 11

The food which had been offered to Me had fallen in the


road. It was old and had been eaten by some wild animal.
When you this it brought you intelligence and thus you
developed devoton for Ka.
ka-naivedya-mhtmya / ko vatsa kathitu kama
yad vaktu na hi akt ca / ved catvra eva ca 12

My child, who is capable of describing the glories of


prasdam. Even the four Vedas are unable to do so.

vara vuva bhadra te / subhadra dvija-pugava


sarvva dtum aha akto / yat te manasi vchitam 13

Choose a boon from me. Good fortune to you. O Subhadra,


best of the twice-born. I am able to award everything to you,
whatever you may desire in your heart.

nryaa-vaca rutv / tam uvca iu svayam


puna kampita-sarvvga / sru-netra-pujali 14

Upon hearing these words from Lord Nryaa, with folded


hands the child replied to Him spontaneously, and as he did
so his whole body trembled again and again, and tears filled
his eyes.

dehi me ka pdbje / dh bhakti sudurlabhm
tad-dsya tat-pade vsa / jar-mtyu-hara para 15

Subhadra answered, give me the most rare attainment of


unflinching devotionto the lotus feet of Ka. For service to
Him to His feet and residence at His feet is the best way to
get rid of old age and death.

anya vara na ghmi / na me kicid prayojanam


nha varrth km ca / rg vetana-bhug yath 16

I will not accept any other boon, for I have no use for
anything else.
I am not a seeker after boons, a lusty person, attached to the
objects of the senses, like a paid servant.

r-ke yasya bhakti ca / tasytra ki sudurlabham
aimdika-dvtriat siddhi karatale pr 17

The sage r Nryaa said, For one who has pure devotion
to r Ka, what is difficult to obtain? The thirtytwo
perfections headed by aim lie in the palm of His hand.

nirvvikalp dadty asya / naiva ghati vaiava


animitt harer bhakti / bhakt vchati santatam 18

If one offers him an oppotunity to attain oneness with r


Hari the Vaiava never accepts it. The bhaktas always
desire to atttain Hari-bhakti which is free from any
motivation.

gha mantra kasya / para kalpa-taru varam


bhakti-da dsya-da uddha / karma-mla-nikntanam 19

Accept this boon of the Ka-mantra. It is the supreme


desire tree, bestowing devotion and pure devotional service.
It cuts out the roots of
the tree of fruitive activity.

lakmr my-kma-bja / nta ka-pada tath


vahni-jyanta-mantra ca mantra-rja manoharam 20

ity evam uktv tat-kare / kathaym sa dakie


vra-traya muni-reha uddha-bhvena putraka 21

yena stotrea tuva / subhadra paramevaram


j cakra sa is / tad eva pahitu mud 22

Having thus spoken He uttered the mantra thrice into the


boys right ear. By this chanting this mantra with a pure
consciousness, Subhadra satisfied the all-attractive Supreme
Lord. That sage joyfully accomplished His instruction to
recite the mantra.
kavaca ca dadau tasmai / jagan-magala-magalam
dhyna ca sma-vedokta / sarvva-pj-vidhi-kramam 23

The Lord also gave him a protective amulet which invokes


auspiciusness for all auspicious things within the universe,
and a meditation which is spoken from the Sma Veda and it
may be chanted as a step while practicing all kinds of
worship of the Lord in His Deity form.

harer dsya ca tad-bhakti / goloka-vsam psitam


janma-dvayntare caiva / karma-bhoga-kaye sati 24

He awarded him service to r Hari and devotion to Him. He


fulfilled his desire for residence in Lord Kas personal
planet of Goloka, after period of two births when his desires
for fruitive sense-pleasure had finished.

Subhadra said, Truly, O illustrious Lord if You would give me


a boon. I choose a boon more than that which ishankered
after in my mind.

mamakya nsti kicid / dtha sarvva-sampadm 26

Nryaa replied, O verily my child, I shall give you the


boon. Just ask whatever you desire. There is nothing
impossible for me. I can give all opulences.

kahe te ki ca kavaca kasya v sarvva-pjitam
amlya-ratna-guik-yukta ca sumanoharam 27
Subhadra said, Whose indeed is that fascinating amulet on
Your neck made of priceless gems and pearls and which is
consecrated above all?

kavaca dehi me deva / sva-satya rakaa kuru


viprasya vacana rutv / uka-kahotha-tluka 28

Give me that amulet, O Lord! Be true to Your word. Brahm


said to Nrada, Hearing the words of the vipra. The Lords
throat, lips and tongue became dried up.

vaktu na akta tad-vakya / dadhyau ka-pdmbujam


pradadau guik tasmai / novca kavaca muni 29

He was unable to reply to his words, but meditated on


Kas lotus feet. The Lord gave the locket to him. but the
sage did not reply.

disturbed became apparently angry at the desired boon.

Because you have taken the amulet of my worshippable


Lord. You shall have a lifetime of seven kalpas and also in the
next life.

pare mkendu-putras tva / mrkendeyo bhaviyati 33

After an extremely long time you shall go to Goloka. In your


next life you shall become Mrkendeya, the son of Mkendu.

tava kahe sthita csya / pratijanmani janmani 34

I have given you my amulet. You must protect it little son. It


is to be placed upon your neck on each of your successive
births.

The sage who was the devotee of the Lord and the son of
religion, devotedly replaced the kavaca upon the Lords
neck.

The Lord blessed him, and gave back the kavaca to the vipra
just as a cow whose calf has died, then the muni departed
for his home

The sage was chastised by his brother, Nara, by the great


soul, his father, Dharma, by his mother, Mrti, and by his
wife nti.

The vipra having obtained the supreme desire tree of the
mantra arose from the lake brilliant with brhmaical power.

For a moment he stood by the shore of the charming lake,


and chanted the supreme mantra, worshipping the Supreme
Lord.

Then his father the learned brhmaa, after searching a long


time for his son he went to his home most unhappy,
lamenting and weeping.

Because of this news of her son, his mother attempted to


give up her life. The vipra did not give his life having seen a
very wonderful dream.

The brhmaa and brhma left their home in order to find


their son, and together with all their relatives, they entered
the terrible jungle.

After searching the entire forest, they came to the beautiful


lake, and there they saw the child at the foot of the young
banyan tree glowing like the sun.

The vipra and vipr, father and mother, kissed the cheek of
their son
with respect and embraced him again and again.

Their son respectfully related all that had happened. Hearing


the boys story, the vipra his wife and their kinskolk all went
to their own land, after crosing the Candrabhga river and
entered the great city.

The emperor whose residence was in that city, seeing the


powerful child, gave him his own daughter, decorated with
jewels.

She was young, lovely. Her complexion was dusky and her
luster was like molten gold. She was chaste, very virtuous
and was an expansion of the goddess of fortune.

As a dowry the emperor also happily gave a thousand


elephants ten hundred thousand horses and a thousand
chariots.

wearing golden ornaments, and a thousand garments made

foot-soldiers, ten hundred thousand foot-soldiers and ten

Having given away his daughter, he wept together with his


wife. The king with his daughter went to the brhmaas

Having gone some distance, he king saw his city. It was


extremely beautiful and charming, exceeding Amaravat,
the capital of Indra.

It resembled pure crystal, and was composed of touch stone.


Within it were three hundred thousand houses with roofs and
nine hundred thousand fine temples.

Seven walls and three moats surrounded it, making it very


difficult for enemies to have access, O my son.

The rama of the child was also pleasurable, being made of


touch stone. There were of doors embedded with diamonds
and pitchers made of precious jewels.

the child with his father and mother was also joyfully

He ushered the child into the house of jewels, and with


respect he enthusiastically made him sit on a lion-seat
made of jewels.

The minister also happily offered delightful lion-seats of


jewels to the king who was giving his daughteras well as to

The minister himself rendered service to the child with the


white cmara, holding a bejewelled umbrella which was
bordered by strands of diamonds.

He dwelt in the sudharma assemby house just like the great


Indra and . The father in-law preceded by the child then went
to his home.

During that time the childs father was eaten in the jungle by
the tiger.

O son, His chaste wife, the highly fortunate mother of the


child died together with her husband and because he had
eaten with respect the food offered to r Ka, he
travelled accompanied by his wife, on a vehicle made of
jewels to the abode of r Ka.

The tiger having eaten his bones, rightly became instantly


purified and went with that couple to the sublime mind-
magnetizing realm of Goloka.

The child abandoned his body on the bank of the celestial


river by a snowy peak of the Himlayas, having bequeathed
to his son his kingdom, the opulence of which was great
even compared to that of the heaenly planets, and by his
deeds, he obtained a birth in the womb of the wife of
Mkeu.

In his next life through the boon given by r Nryaa, he


became Mrkeeya, greatest of sages, with a lifetime of
seven kalpas. The vipra rightly attained this destination,
because he ate the food offered to r Ka.

O son, if such is the destination, for one who eats the food
offered to the Lord undesiring and unknowing, though it be
old and lying in the road, then if one knowingly and
desiringly eats that food, desiring eternally the remnants of
the Lord, certainly the four Vedas are unable to determine
his destination.

O brhmaa, thus I have described to you this ancient


history which is astonishing, charming and delightful. Now

the glories of the offering tasted by the supreme Lord Ka

Presently I desire to hear that kavaca which can destroy


doubts concerning ones actual self, and which was spoken
from the thraat of r Nryaa i. Kindly speak on that.

Sanatkumra said, O forefather of all living beings, I also
have some doubts on this point. Who was the subject of that

May our father and guru clearly reveal this destroyer of


doubts. Quickly, most fortunate father, dear to your sons, tell

Hearing the words of his sons, Brahm, his throat, lips and
palate dry, remembered the lotus feet of r Ka, and

Brahm said, The dhynam and kavacam awarded by Lord


Nryaa to the virtuous great soul Subhadra is also uttered
in the Sma Veda.

navna-jalada-yma / pta-kaueya-vsasam
candanokita-sarvvga / sa-smita yma-sundaram 3

He has the blue-blackish hue of a rain-filled thundercloud,


and his raiment is yellow silk. His whole body is sprinkled
with the pulp of sandalwood. Thus ymasundara stands
smiling.

munndrea-susiddhea-brahmea-ea-vanditam 4

His attire is enhanced by strings of malat flowers,


ornamented by jewel ornaments, and He is worshipped by
the chiefs among exalted sages, perfected beings and the
Lords Brahm, iva and ea.

sarvvdyam api sarvva-ja / purua prakte param 5

His form is all that I possess. He is the lord of all and origin
of everything, the perpetual Lord, the first of all persons, the
all-knowing supreme enjoyer, wh is transcendental to the
influence of His material energy.

He is free from the three modes of nature, desireless and
untouched by matter. This is the Supreme Lord whom I
adore. Have thus meditated on the Lord together with His
mla-mantra, in a pleasing mood one should offer to the
Lord a footwash etc.

Then with devotion and feeling one should recite the stotram
and kavacam and after murmuring that mantra with love,
one should fall down to the ground like a rod and offer ones
obeisances. Thus I have described it to you, O my child.
What further do you desire to hear?

r Sanatkumra said, O Brahm, recite to me that kavaca


of r Ka the Supersoul, which is the most auspicious of

I gave it to Yamarja, who in turn gave it to Nryaa i.


That si gave that kavaca to the great soul, Subhadra.

It is most confidential and pure. Out of affection for you I


shall tell that kavacam which the perfected beings recited
and thus obtained their perfections.

dharmrtha-kma-mokeu / viniyoga prakrtitah 12

Thus all the demigods headed by Indra obtained their


opulences. The sages, the moon and the sun, and Lord
Nryaa Himself by chanting became awarded the benefits
of religiosity, economic development, sense enjoyment and
liberation.

May Gaddhara protect my throat, and may Ka himself


protect my shoulders. May Vsudeva protect my chest, and
may Acyuta protect my abdomen.

May Lord Padmanbha from whose navel a lotus grows,
protect my navel. May the killer of Kasa protect my
skeleton, May Puruottama protect my back, and may
Nitynanda protect my buttocks.

May Puarka protect my two feet, and may Hari protect

protect my entire body. May Rma protect me from the front,

protect me from the east, and may Vmana Himself protect

May Ananta protect me from the north. May vara Himself


protect me from the north-east, and may the Lord of
Vndvana protect me, His devotee, who has come to His
shelter, in the water, on the land, in space, while asleep and
while awake. Dear child, thus I have recited to you this very
wonderful kavacam.

ihaiva hari-bhakti ca / jvan-mukto bhaven nara 22

It awards happiness and liberation and is very essential,


bestowing all perfections on the pure souls. A man who
recites this excellent kavacam at the time of performing
worship, obtains service to Hari and an exalted residence in
Goloka. In this world he receives devotion to Hari and he
becomes liberated even when in the material body.

Thus the kavacam named jagan-magalam, related in the


first Part of the essential treatise of all nectarean knowledge,

This kavaca embedded in pearls was given to me by


Nryaa i. However it was not revealed to me being
forbidden by r Hari.

The kavacam of his beloved goddess was desired by him and


was not spoken to me by the i. The pearl locket was not
given to me being forbidden by my kinsmen.

tmana kavaca mantra / svaya dtu na crhati


pr naa ca dnena / ceti veda-vido vidu 27

One should not give ones own kavacam and mantra. Those
wise in the Vedas say that by giving it, ones life airs become
disturbed.

akara gaccha bhagavan / janmntara-guru tava


sa eva tubhya kavaca / dasyaty eva na saaya 28

He Bhagavan! Go to akara who was your guru in a former


birth. He will, without a doubt, give you the kavaca.

tvat-prktanena viprendra / satvarea ubhena ca


dhruva prpsyasi tva vatsa / kavaca tat sudurlabham 29

O best of vipras with auspicious resolve hasten to the


presence of your former guru. Dear child, you shall actually
achieve that extremely rare kavacam.

kumra gaccha vaikuham / sva-guru paya satvaram


nryaa ca kavaca tubhya dsyati nicitam 30

sanatkumra, you should quickly go to Vaikunha and see


your own guru, Lord Nryaa, He will certainly give you the
kavacam.

saprpya kavaca vatsa / kavaca tat sudurlabham 32

O child, the great personality Sanatkumra, having gone to


Vaikunha, achieved that desirable and most rare kavacam.

And by the order of Lord Brahm, Nrada also set out, and
Brahm returned to Brahma-loka which is free from the
tribulations of birth, death and old age.

Chapter Six

r ukadeva Gosvm said, After Sanatkumra had


departed for Vaikuha, and Brahm had gone to Brahma-

Vysa mahmuni said, When they had both departed, the


sage wept by the bank of the river. He wandered here and
there grief-stricken out of separation from Me.

dhyyamno hari-padam / iva drau samutsuka 3

The exalted sage eagerly considered in his heart and


meditated on the feet of r Hari, being desirous to see iva.

praamya pitara bhakty / kumra bhrtara tata


jagma tapas sthnt / kailsbhimukho muni 4

With devotion he offered obeisances to his father and then to


his brother Sanatkumra. Then the muni left the place where
he had executed penance and set out for Kailsa

After bathing in the sacred Ktaml river, he offered


worship to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then he ate
some fruts and drank water and set out for the
Gandhamadana Mountain.

There, at the root of a charming banyan tree, in a straw hut,


he saw a brhmaa meditating on r Kas lotus feet.

His body was tall, naked and golden and covered by long
hair. His eyes were closed in bliss, and filled with tears of
happiness.

expert in the knowledge of union with the Lord. he was a
disciple of iva, who is the guru of gurus of the chief

Within his lotus heart resided the eternal Supreme


Personality of Godhead, who is the all-pervasive supersoul,
from whose navel a lotus sprouts, who has the appearance
of a bright new moon, from whose transcendental form the
brahmajyoti emanates, who is the supeme reservoir of all
opulence, the witness of all beings, who is watching and
smiling, his entire body covered by bumps of rapture.

On seeing this great and exalted sage, his mind absorbed in


pure and lofty thoughts of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Nrada i, the sage amongst the demigods

He wandered here and there, looking at the hermitage of the


sage. It was an extremely secluded place, and from moment
to moment it appeared to be more and more charming, and
ever increasingly new.

veta-raktotpala-dalai / kamalai kamalyaka 14

There was a lovely and resplendent lake of crystal clear


water filled with white and red lotuses, seeming the suitable
residence for the goddess of fortune.

The lake forever shone with excellent blossoming lustrous


blue lotuses and with swarms of intently absorbed humming
bees,

vanyai vkair bahu-vidhai / phala-kha-suobhitai

...and also with many varieties of woodland trees which were


nicely beautified by their fruit-filled branches, with medicinal
karajaka, with fragrant karajas whose fruits are shaped like
fingernails as well as scarlet fruited bimba and the small
crooked and ugly koika...

mandrai ca sindhuvrais / ti-patrai suobhanai 17

...with trees of tamarind, as well as the kapittha, whose fruit


is favored by monkeys, with the ever blooming red flowers of
the never-sad aoka tree, with cooling sandalwood trees as
well as heavenly mandra coral trees, with sindhuvras and
the very beautiful tipatra palms...

...with young parijt trees which were enhanced with nicely


ripened fruits, very graceful and pleasing...

...together with many varieties of jasmin, mallik, malat


and kunda. and the auspicious comet flowers. Amidst these
natural trellises of creepers. were alcoves of tulas, who is
very dear to Lord Mdhava, and tulas were worshipped by
the beautiful campaka flower trees.

...with groves of kadamba trees with bright white flowers,


and groups of snake-king trees which created a brilliant
effect and excellent thornapple trees...

...with flocks of swans, ducks and male cuckoos endlessly


cooing their pure vibrations, the hermitage was excellently
adorned and very attractive to the mind.

...with tigers, and the eight-footed arabhas, with lions,
rhinoceros, buffalo, black deer and yaks flaunting their
camara-tails it was extremely splendid.

By the influence of the great sage these animals were


devoid of the fault of enemity. They were free from the
propensities for violence, thievery and viciousness to others
living beings, as well as fear and lamentation.

That was a most sanctiying place, the best among trthas,


glorified through out the land of Bhrata, a place embodying
perfection, endowing perfection, evoking supreme perfection

Upon seeing that rama, Nrada, the best of sages went in


the presence of the muni, who was sitting equipoised but not
in trance.

On seeing the powerful sage among the devas, he swiftly


arose and offered him some unbroken fruits and roots and
meanwhile he spoke to him.

Smiling, the muni questioned his exalted brhmaa guest


who shone with spiritual potency, appearing as if he were
personified good fortune approaching that place, and the son
of Brahm, Nrada, who was a pure saint of pure lineage,
playedupon his v and smiled reciprocally as he was
offered worship,

The muni said, O vipra, what is your good name? Whither


do you go, and whence do you come? Where is your father
and indeed who can he be? Where do your reside and what
is your place of birth.

It is by my good fortune that you who appear like


brahminical power personified, have come here to purify
myself and my rama.

By frequenting the holy places made of water, dirt or stone


for a long time even the gods do not become purified. But
merely by seeing the devotee of Viu, it is effected.

By the touch of the vaiavas feet, the trthas instantly


become purified, Indeed the earth together with her oceans
at once becomes purified, as do her mountains, forests, and
islands.

I am blessed. I am fulfilled, and my life is now fruitful! For


suddenly a guest appearing as a brhmaa-vaiava has

One who honors the vaiava thereby honors all living


beings. I therefore offer my rama and everything within it
unto you.

For the present, please eat these nicely ripened relishable


fruits, and drink this sweet, cool pure water.

dugdha ca surabh-datta / ramya madurita madhu


paripakva phala-rasa / piba svdu muhur muhu 38

Drink this milk yielded by the surabh cow. It is delightfully


sweet. And drink this luscious juice of fully ripened fruits.
Take more and more!

sukha-bjye su-talpe ca / ayana kuru sundare


su-ta-vta-saugandha-ptena surabh-kte 39

Now take rest on this pleasant bed which is nicely ventilated


by the cool fragrant and purified breeze created by the
surabh cow.

atithir yasya tuo hi / tasya tuo hari svayam


harau tue gurus tuo / gurau tue jagat-trayam 40
One who pleases his guest, thereby pleases r Hari Himself.
When r Hari is pleased r Guru becomes pleased, and
when r Guru is pleased, one satisfies the three worlds.

tapsi yaj satya ca / la dharma sukarma ca


apjitair atithibhi / srddha sarvve praynti te 42

When guests are given residence in our home then all the
demigods, holy places, holy vows, penances, sacrifices,
truth, good behavior, virtue and good deeds also reside
there. However if guests are not worshipped, then all of
these personified beings depart together with those uncared
for guests.

When a disappointed guest departs from someones home,

deity as well as his guru all abandon that sinful person and
depart out of disappointment.

He who does not not worship a elevated brhmaa guest is


on the same level as the ungrateful killers of women, as the
killers of brhmaas, as those who have sex with their gurus
wife, as rogues who kill trusting persons, as those who are
hateful to those who have shown friendship, as those who
ungratefully break their word, as those who earn money
sinfully, as those who steal money given in charity, as those
who sell their daughters as prostitutes, as those who remove
boundaries (ie. steal others land?), as those who give false
witness, as those steal the property of brhmaas, as those
who steal the property of the Deity, as those materialistic
attendants on iva-ligams or pjrs in general who make a
living thereby, as those who eat the food cooked by dras,
as those who eat food cooked on the the rddha day of a
dra, as those vipras who are inimical to r Ka, as
those cruel persons who slay their fellow man, as those who
are not devoted to their gurus and thus become afflicted
with disease, as those who always tell lies, as dras who
associate with women of the brhmaa caste, or who have
sex with their mothers, as those who cut down the avattha
tree, as wives who slay their husbands, as those who kill
their father or mother, as those who slay those who have
taken shelter of them, as those whether brhmaas,
katriyas, vaiyas or dras who steal either stones or gold.
So saying the muni worshipped the sage Nrada. He made
him eat tasty food and afterwards, he devotedly induced him
to rest.

r Nrada said, O best among sages, I am Nrada, a


brhmana and I am the son of Brahm. I have come from the
place at which I performed austerities and my desired

I have come here to purify my self and to see you. Who are
you, who are rendered pure through meditation, naked with
straw on your head?

ki dhyyase mah-bhga / reha-deva ca ko guru 55

Whose is the kavaca on your neck, covered with faultless


gems and pearls? Why do you mediitate, O highly fortunate
one and who is the elevated divinity who is your guru?

jvan mukto bhavn eva / punsi bhuvana-trayam
yasya yatra kule janma / tasya tat tad vaco mana 56

putre yaasi toye ca / kavitvena ca vidyay


pratihy ca jyate / sarve manasa nm 57

The muni replied, You are a liberated soul even within your
present body, and thus you sanctify the three worlds. Your
history where and in which family you took your birth, each
and every word (and mind?), concerning your famous
boyhood and the water (in which you bathed) is known and
celebrated through poetry and wisdom in the minds of all
men.

tat-putro si mah-khyto / devari-pravaro mahn 58

The creator of the worlds, Brahm, expanded you through


his mind. Thus you are his highly renowned son, the great
and excellent sage among the demigods.

nagno lpyur vivek ca / vsaso ki prayojanam 59

O most fortunate soul! O saviour of those deliver the


universe! My name is Lomaa. I live naked. Life is a brief
moment. Thus if one discriminates, one should ask, What is
the use of clothing?

vka-mle nivso me / chatrea ki ghea ca


raudra-vi-vrartha / smprata kaamastaka 60

The root of this avattha tree is my residence. What is the


use of an umbrella or house for the purpose of protection
from fierce rain. Presently I have straw on my head.

jala-budbuda-vidyudtva-trailokya ktrima dvija


brahmdi-ta-paryyanta / sarvva mithyaiva svapnavat

The three worlds are like some bubbles in the water or the
flashing of a lightning bolt. O brhmaa, Beginning with Lord
Brahm down to the blade of grass, everything in this world
is false like a dream.

What I use of a wife a son, wealth, opulences and beauty?
Why should one strive for money and attractive qualities. O
muni, This life is of but short duration.

As each of the Indras dies and each of the Manus, one of my


hairs will fall out. What is the necessity of illusory needs.

O muni, when all of my hairs have fallen out, when my


abundant hairis exhausted, it is certain that my insignificant
life will end and my death shall come.

dhyye r-pda-padma / tat pdma-padmea-vanditam


parasya praktes tasya / kasya paratmana 65

Thus I meditate upon the splendid lotus feet of the Supersoul


Lord r Ka. He is transcendental to the material energy
and His feet are worshipped by Lord Viu, the master of
goddess Lakm who dwells within the forest of lotus
flowers.

tasya me bha-devasya / sarvvem kraasya ca


gurur me jagat ntho / yogndr guru iva 66

He who is the ultimate cause of everything, is my cherished


Deity. My guru is Lord iva, lord of the worlds, who is the
guru of the best among yogs.

mat-kahe kavaca yasya / mad-guru kathayiyati


guror niedho yatrste / tad-vaktu ka kamo bhuvi 67

The kavacam which is on my neck, my guru will tell to you.


My guru forbade me to tell it to anyone on this earth.
guro ca vacana yo hi / plana na karoti ca
gurktam uktv pp sa / brahna-haty labhet dhruvam 68

One who does not follow the instructions spoken by r


Guru, is said to be a sinner and will certainly get the
destination reserved for those who kill a brhmaa.

sva-guru iva-rpa ca / tad bhinna manyate hi ya


brahma-haty labhet so pi / vighnas tasya pade pade 69

One who considers a difference between his guru and the


form of iva, also attains the destination for the killer of a
brhmaa, and there will be difficulties for him at every step.

akarttavya tu karttavya / planya guror vaca


aplane sarvva-vighna / labhate natra saaya 70

By following the order of r Guru, one automatically does


what should be done and avoids that which ought not to be
done. However one who does not follow r Gurus order,
encounters all manner of obstacles. There is no doubt of this.

i pda-rajas / cocchihliganena ca
mucyate sarvva-ppebhyo / jvan-mukto labhen nara 71

By his blessing, by the dust from his feet, by honoring his


food-remnants and by receiving his embrace, a man
becomes freed from the reactions to all sinful deeds and
becomes liberated even while in the material body.

sva-guru akara paya / gaccha kailsa varam


mucyate vighna-ppebhyo /guro caraa-darant 72

You should go to see Your own guru Lord akara at Kailsa,


for one becomes freed from the impediments due to sin by
seeing the feet of r Guru.

r Vysa said,After speaking with Lomaa, then Nrada


Muni departed for the bank of the Pupabhadra river which
was extremely mind-enchanting.

yatrste ga-ka ca / uddha-sphika-sannibha


nn-vka-samyuktais tribhir anyai sarovarai 2

In that place there is a mountain named ga-kta which


appears as made of pure crystal. there are many trees there
as well as three other excellent lakes.

hasa-kradavkrair bhramarair dhvani-sundarai


puskokila-nindai ca / santata sumanoharai 3

Those lakes are always crowded by groups of swans and


ducks, and filled with the charming sounds of the wandering
bees, and the reverberating sound of the male cuckoo, which
delight the mind.

aitya-saugandhya-mndyai ca / vyubhi surabh-ktai


samdhi-yukto yatrste / mrkeeyo mah-muni 4

They were also endowed with cool fragrant and gentle


breezes which were created by the surabh cows. The sage
Mrkeya resided there in trance.

papraccha kuala nta / nta sattva-guraya 5

When that sage saw r Nrada, he bowed to the ground


with devotion. Then that peaceful devotee who was the
abode of virtue, inquired of Nrada concerning his wellbeing
and peace.

Mrkeeya Muni said, Today my birth has been made


fruitful, and my life has become full of meaning, for that
mountain of saintly qualities, Nrada, the son of Brahm has
entered my rama.

kva ysi kuta ysi / ki te manasi varttate 7

Aho! Most glorious divine sage, shining with spiritual


potency, where do you go? Whence do you come, and what
is on your mind?

manasa prinm eva / sarvva-karmaika-kraam


mano nurpa vkya ca / vakyena prasphua mana 8

For living beings, the mind is the sole instrument for all
activities. Words follow the mind, and through words the
mind becomes clear.

mune ca vacana rutv / v-pi svam psitam


uvca sasmitam nta / vaca satya sudhopamam 9

Hearing these words from that sage, Nrada, who was


playing his v and travelling at his will, smiling, replied to
the sage with words of peace and truth which resembled
nectar.

O friend, I go to Kailsa in serch of knowledge from the best


of the wise. I go to see and question Mahdeva, and also to
offer obeisances to the Lord.

So saying, after accepting worship from the muni, Nrada


Muni, set forth. Mrkeeya however felt afflicted by sorrow
because of being separated from the compaany of a sdhu,
for that is the most severe of all pains.

svarga-mandkin-tra / kailsa prayayau muni 12

After passing with ease beyond the almost impassable


Himalayas, the muni arrived at Kailsa on the bank of the
celestial Mandkin.

dadara vaa-vka ca / yojanyutam ucchritam


obhita atakai skandhai / rakta-pakva-phalnvitai 13

susnigdhair sundarai ramyai ramya pakndra-sakulai


siddhendrai munndrai ca / yogndrai pariobhitam 14

He saw the beautiful banyan tree ten thousand yojanas high.


It had hundreds of trunks and was covered by ripe red fruit
and with the splendid lovely and charming kings of the birds,
the garuas. It was also further adorned by the chiefs among
the siddhas, sages and yogs.

After speaking to those persons who offered him their


respectful obeisances, Nrada went to the forest of Parvat.
It was symmetrical, with a pleasing circular shape and was
four yojanas in width.

It was beautified by seven lovely and charming lakes which

lines of blue and red lotus flowers surrounded by swarms of
addicted bees, and with hundreds of enchanting flower
gardens.

All of the animals and birds were free from enmity, fear and
so on, and the predator beasts and the smaller animals
drank water amically together.

This was the charming sporting grounds of goddess Parvat


and the great lord iva and it was nicely decorated by
diamonds, sapphires and rubies.

That play ground was round like the orb of the full moon. It
extended one kroa in measurement, and was surrounded by
hundreds of thousands of unwilting pillars made from
plantain trees.

Those plantains were wrapped around with fine new thread
of variegated bright colors of red, yellow and white, which
were arranged together with unbroken leaves in a very
graceful, decorative and attractive fashion. And around and
around the plantains and everywhere were ornamental
lattices of flowergarlands.

There was a resting place with beautiful beds scented with


charming campaka and sandal. The air also was scented with
flowers and candana on account of the surabhi cows.

That river is the saviour and Her waters are everfresh due to
emanating from the feet of r Ka. She is worshipped by
all the worlds due to her devotedness to her husband.

After bathed in that deliverer from the horrible ocean of


material life. Nrada offered worship to the supreme Lord
r Ka, who is the Supersoul, and transcendental to the
influence of His own material energy. He is the most dear
person, unattached to His own pleasure, not bound by the
three ropes of material existence goodness, passion and
ignorance. That Supreme Lord is the witness of the subtle
and gross actions of the jvas and from His body emanates
the eternal divine light. After performing that worship,
Nrada saw before him a delightful royal road and he went
forth on it.

It was decorated completely of faultless crystalline gems of


great value and had been constructed by Vivakarm, the
architect of the demigods.

That road was visible to pious devotees and but wrongdoers


were unable to see it. It was a hundred bow-lengths in
breadth and shone splendidly with multicolored lines of
gems.

It was very long and upon it persons from all the ramas
were walking. Nrada then saw before him a chariot which
was endowed with millions of facilities.

That air-chariot was made of invaluable priceless gems and


designed with pure symmetry. It had a globular shape and
was one hundred thousand bow-lengths in circumference.

It stood upright one hundred thousand bow-lengths in


height, and could fly upwards vertically and hover. It ws

It had a very brilliant pinnacle artistically designed made of


faultless diamonds. The air-chariot was ornamented by

Fromr the air-chariot also were hung ornamental webs of


prijt flowers. The chariot appeared as effulgent as a

It was especially constructed by the desire of Lord iva and
was capable of fufilling all desires of those who wishes to

which was composed of pure gems, and surrounded by

just described, The panels of its doors were made of

Smiling (in mystification) Nrada beheld the castle of
ambhu to be decorated by excellent pillars and staircases
made of many kinds of diamond. It was surrounded by three
moats which were inaccessible for enemies but they were of
easy access for saints. There were also three walls, each of
them one hundred thousand bow-lengths in height, my son.

Everywhere were Rdh and Ka. There was a thousand


enchanting cottages within the groves an in each one of
those pleasure abodes were Rdh Ka.

There was a thousand fragrant flower-scented beds sprinkled
with the pulp of sandalwood and there was a door-keeper

He held a trident and wore a tiger skin. After chatting with

He entered it and saw a very dear wish come true. At the


root of the enchanting bank of the Yamun, amidst a group
of Kadamba trees in between bejewelled walls, was a
wonderful scene of the gops bathing completely naked.

On the top of the kadamba tree was r Ka with a bunch


of ss in His hand. Then Nrada saw the merciful door-
keeper with the trident in his hand appearing like time-giant.
Then after speaking with him, Nrada went on swiftly to the
third excellent door.

There he saw before him a artificial banyan tree. At the root


of the tree was a peron who wore a yellow dhoti and who
was the object of absorption for all the other cowherd boys.

They performed boyish sports, and in their midst was He


who transcends the darkness of the material world, Lord r
Ka. The boys were enjoying some excellent sweet rice
which had been offered by the wives of the yajic
brhmaas.

After the sage performed a deep meditation on that scene,


then being permitted with a graceful wave of the guardians
hand, Nrada took the fourth delightful door.

The son of Brahma went forward and he saw a sublime


picture. It was Lord Kra holding the hill of Govardhana.

He was giving protection to the gops and the other


residents of Gokula. at the time when the whole of Gokula
was fearful on account of the dangerous rains sent by Indra.

With His right hand Ka assured fearlessness to the


Vrajavss. Then Nrada saw that the gate-keeper Nand
was standing with trident in his hand smiling.

Looking towards the fifth excellent gate the vipra went
forward. Then he saw a place embellished by many pictures
and overseen by the guard Vrabhadra.

There he saw at the base of a kadamba tree on the bank of


Yamun, a fascimile of the subduer of Klya.

After looking on this he felt satisfied and smiling he went


forward to the sixth door. That gate was in the charge of a
boy, who was endowed with four arms and who carried a
trident.

He sat smiling on a bejewelled lion throne together with his


associates. r Nrada saw there a wonderful picture of the
going of r Hari to Mathur.

The gops were lamenting together wwith Yaod and


Nanda. All Gokua was in distress and came to take shelter of
r Hari as He stood on the chariot.

Akrra was there as well as Nanda, devoid of joy, being


overwhelmed by grief. The r Nrada saw the seventh door
and its door-keeper.

It was the entrance into Mathur of Lord Ka who is


transcendental to the material energy, together with
Balarma and the other gopas, a scene of extraordinary

All the residents of Mathur and their sons and anyone who
happened to be in that town, gazed unrestrainedly with
great respect upon that fascinating sight.

Also portrayed were the breaking of ivas bow as well as


the killing of Kasa and his assistants, and the welcome
release of Vsudeva and his wife from their shackles.

The lord of the devas, Gaea, was appointed to the door of


that place, together with his hosts of followers. He was
situated in trance. He appeared very effulgent and was
garlanded by a necklace of crystals.

He was murmuring the supremely pure names of Lord Ka


from whose form the eternal divine light emanates. He is
unaffected by material desire, free from the material modes,
transcendental to the material energy.

Woshipable in all places! Lord of all beings! Worthy of


worship by all living beings! Great heart! Spiritual master of

excellent worship and pure vows of the Supreme soul of all

best of learned persons, the most glorious leader of the
multitude of godly beings who follow Lord iva.

After the sage among the gods had thus spoken, that
powerful Gaea then became invisible. Nrada then went
forward swiftly joyously contemplating the Supreme Lord
within his heart.

One who regularly recites this prayer of praise of the pot-


bellied god at the time of worship which was composed in
former times by r Nrada, will experience victory in every
step of his life.

One who recites this composition attentively for one year will
receive a special son who will be highly devoted to r
Ka.

He will be renowned, learned, wealthy and long-lived. Al


these obstacles wil be annihilated and he will achieve great
opulence, and spotless fame and at the end he will easily go
the supreme abode of r Hari.

from sight, Nrada, with a blissful consciousness, looked
about the lords rama which was charming and sublimely
enchanting to the mind.

The temple of jewels was adorned with pillars of pearls


actually the color of gorocan and equipped with couchs
white as the foam of milk.

It was decorated with staircases and doors of diamond, and
was lustrous glistening with strings of pearls.

Seeing that the exalted sage went into intense trance and he
saw r akara seated on a lion throne made of gems.

The Lord wore a garment of tiger skin and the sickle moon
stood in his hair.`His smiling face was pure and tranquil.

vibhti-bhitga ca / para gag-ja-dharam


bhakta-priya ca bhaktea / jvalanta brahma-tejas 9

His supreme body shone with spiritual potency. It was


ornamented by the powers of mystic yoga and upon his
matted hair he sustained the waters of Mother Gag dev.
He is the lord of his devotees, and thus was very dear to his
devotees.

tri-netra paca-vaktra ca / koi-candra-sama-prabham


japanta paramtmana brahma-jyoti santanam 10

He was adorned with three eyes, five faces, effulgence like


that of ten million moons, chanting the names of the eternal
Supreme Personality of Godhead, the origin of the divine
light...

nirlipta ca nirha ca / dtara sarvva-sampadm


svecch-maya sarva-bjam / r-ka prakte param

...who is unattached and free from desire, awarding all


desires, self-willed, the germinating seed of all existences,
the all-attractive r Ka who is transcendental to his
material nature.

siddhendrai ca munndrai ca devendrai parisevitam


parvada-pravara-reha-sevita veta-cmarai 12

He was nicely served by the best among the siddhas, sages


and gods, and fanned with white cmaras by the most
excellent amongst his exalted associates.

His lotus feet were massaged by Durg dev and his


qualities were elaborately praised by Bhadra-kl. Before
him stood his sons Skanda and Gaapati.

r Nrada wrapped his shawl around his neck and bent his
shoulders in humility, and then bowed his head to the
ground in submission before the best among yogs, r
ambhu, his guru.

sva-guru ca pau-pati / vedoktena stavena ca 15

The sage amongst all gods then gave satisfaction to his


guru, who is the master of bestial beings as well as the
whole universe by giving with great devotion a recition of a
prayer of praise from the Vedas.

I bow unto you, O lord of the universe, my lord and my


master. You are the seed of the tree which takes the form of
this world of material existence. You accept the form of the
