MONASH RESIDENTIAL SERVICES
A STYLE TO SUIT EVERYONE
Monash Residential Services (MRS)
offer three distinct styles of on-campus
accommodation from a single room in
a traditional Hall of Residence, to a shared
apartment or house for a small group.
Our traditional Halls of Residence offer
the character and charm of a bygone era,
with a long history passing through their
hallowed halls and photos of past cohorts
proudly displayed. Some students who
have parents that lived in MRS Halls have
even returned to live here and continue
the tradition!
This style (pictured) provides a single
room, with bed, desk, chair and wardrobe,
and is available at Clayton and Berwick
campuses. Facilities such as kitchens,
bathrooms, laundries and communal
spaces are shared by all.
Shared apartments and houses, at Clayton
and Peninsula campuses, provide all
the benefits of living on campus with more
privacy and independence.
Ranging from two to eight bedrooms,
is often the choice for a group of friends.
Residents have a single room, with bed,
desk, chair and wardrobe, sharing other
spaces such as lounge room, kitchen,
bathroom and laundry. Its almost like living
in a share house but without the worry
of utility bills, landlords and leases.
Our self-contained studio apartments at
the Clayton campus offer everything you
need to live independently in Halls.
As well as bed, desk, chair and wardrobe,
residents rooms contain kitchen facilities
and a personal bathroom. Communal
spaces include floor lounges with cooking
facilities, common, games and music rooms.
All styles include 1GB/sec internet access,
Monash Security patrolling 24/7 and free
use of washing machines and clothes
dryers.

Creative Coding
Coding is for everyone, not just for IT
specialists! One of the most exciting ways
to learn to code is through creative coding
writing code to create works of art.
Of interest to all students.
Course commences 1 May.
Mindfulness for Wellbeing and
Peak Performance
Feeling stressed? Mindfulness might be the
answer. In this six-week course, youll learn
how to incorporate mindfulness practices
into your life, to reduce stress and improve
your wellbeing. This course would be of
benefit to all students, especially those in
Year 12, as well as their teachers.
Course commences 15 May.
Monash short courses are offered for free
through the FutureLearn platform.

Receiving this scholarship relieves
so many of the stresses and
pressures I would otherwise have as
a medical student. With the financial
pressure of my course significantly
reduced, I am able to get much
more involved in my community in
terms of volunteering and becoming
a student representative of groups
which particularly interest me.

INTERNATIONAL
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
DAY 2017 RECAP
Our International Student Experience Day at
our Caulfield campus was a fun, interactive
day to farewell term one! We had close to 250
students attend, a few of whom brought their
suitcases to head home directly from the event!
The day was a wonderful taste of Monash
with our student panel offering valuable
insights and students participating in a range
of workshops across all of our faculties.
Our engineering workshop saw some fantastic
displays of robotics, while in pharmacy students
learned about how drugs are designed. Over
in the medicine workshop, students learned
about what really goes on inside your mind, while
students were taken on a journey through
the environment of communication design,
with art, design and architecture.
In science, students examined earth sediments
under microscopes to learn more about
weathering, erosion and sediment production.
Students in the law workshop examined the ways
in which lawyers must present and test a case.
We also saw students participate in a hands
on workshop about finance, and in the arts/
education workshop, students discovered
new digital technologies and applications,
and how they work in the classroom and make
a difference to teaching in the 21st century.
Towards the end of the event, VCE students
participated in an EAL masterclass which
was delivered by a student who achieved
50 in EAL in 2016.
Thanks to all of the international coordinators
and careers practitioners who promoted the
event to their students, and those who also
attended. We look forward to hosting this
event again on the last day of term one in 2018!

GAME, SET, MATCH WITH
ALUMNUS JOEL SMITH
Landing your dream job
What drew you to study journalism,
marketing and PR?
Going through high school, youre not
that sure what you want to do. My interests
and passions in sport and media swayed
me towards the idea of a career in
journalism. I chose to study journalism,
but kept it open with a major in marketing
and a minor in PR.
What were some of the highlights
for you?
There wasnt one semester that was
the same. The course was really hands
on too, especially radio and TV which
included creating a 10-week radio show,
a 90 second news story and a 5 minute
current affairs story.
I heard you got a scholarship to live
and study in Finland?
This was the highlight of my time at
Monash! I was lucky enough to be selected
to go over to Finland for three months as
part of the Global Environmental Journalism
Initiative. This involved studying within
their Environmental Journalism course
at the University of Helsinki.
So how did you get a job at
Tennis Australia?
You have to put yourself out there for your
first job, and in doing so I have been able
to steer my way back to what I am doing
today. The skills I learnt from my journalism
degree at Monash certainly built the
foundation for choosing a current career
path of social media.
What advice would you give students
looking to get their dream job?
Dont be too selective when seeking that
first job after graduation. Take a risk, get out
of your comfort zone and you never know
where thatll lead you.

FOR PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY
The new 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject have placed Monash second
in the world for pharmacy and pharmacology. This means Monash continues to be
number one in Australia and in the Asia Pacific region.
To make it easier for students to find out why that is and how they could benefit, we
are introducing new online information sessions for our undergraduate courses. Your
students will be able to hear from the Course Director, and listen to a current student
and alumnus talk about their experiences. We appreciate that not all students are able
to visit us at our Parkville campus, so this is a fantastic opportunity for your students
to have their questions answered from home.
We are pleased to continue to offer our curriculum aligned workshops in 2017.
Our on-campus VCE Revision Lectures are offered to support current VCE biology
and chemistry students studying units 3 and 4. These seminars have been designed
to reinforce each terms key learnings and will be delivered by qualified VCE teachers.
Our Science of Medicines Workshops offer a selection of curriculum-aligned workshops
for both Year 10 and VCE students. Each workshop has been designed to reinforce
content taught in the physical sciences and relates directly to the research themes
of our faculty. The workshops can be run in school or in the laboratories at our campus
in Parkville. Please share this with your science-teaching colleagues if you think
they would be interested. We welcome teachers to register their class for a workshop
throughout the year.
