FIRST AFFIRMATIVE SPEAKER

Resolve that The selling of new car units should be temporarily restrained in the Philippines.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. The topic for our debate is that The selling of new car units
should be temporarily restrained in the Philippine. We defined the topic as the temporary suspension of
cars or vehicle sales. Temporary restraint is a short-term way of limiting, or preventing from doing
something and keeping it under control. We, the affirmative team, believe that the selling of new car units
should be temporarily restrained.

Today as the first speaker, I, Jade Marielle Dugenia, will be talking to you about the necessity of
the case. Our second speaker, Pamela Bianca Joy Amante, will state the beneficiality of the case. And
lastly, our third speaker, Leo Dianne Amad, will rebut, sum up our team case and talk to you about the
practicability of the case.

I am going to discuss three points on the said resolution. My first point is that, such increase of
cars because of selling can cause traffic jam or traffic congestion. According to an economist, Ciel Habito,
around 35,000 new vehicles hit our roads every month. Netting out an estimate of 180,000 vehicles
retired last year, the net addition was about 240,000 vehicles over the past year or 20,000 added every
month. Majority of the vehicles were cars.

Cars are the principle factors that cause traffic problems in urban areas such as Metro Manila due
to which prohibiting them from city centrals, helping the environment to be cleaner as well as reducing
traffic congestion. More cars on the road will result to traffic jam. The population in the Philippines is
increasing. Therefore, more people want their own personal transport to get with. As the number of cars
increases, the chance of congestion also increases. Thats why, in smaller towns and villages, congestion
is almost unheard of.

Now to my second point, more cars mean more pollution, and more pollution means more
pollution-related illnesses. It is widely known that cars are responsible for the highest level of carbon
dioxide emissions, or commonly known as greenhouse gases. According to Japan International
Cooperation Agency, traffic congestion also adds to the countrys air pollution. This is because congestion
leads to increased fuel congestion consumption and automobile emissions as vehicles are forced to
operate less efficiently. Nowadays, traffic contributed a lot in widespread of pollution.

Car smoke, traffic jams and loud horns of vehicles are few reasons that are significantly affected
the environment and people in many ways. With a large number of vehicles on the roads, people are more
vulnerable to various diseases and many have serious health issues due to pollution. In order to tackle this
issue, the selling of new car units should be temporarily restrained.

Lastly, to my third point, the increased growth of cars that results to traffic congestion is a real
social problem. This is because it isolates people from their various activities and limits the workers
availability and productivity by affecting employees commutes that lead to workers arriving late,
commuting hassles for workers, long travel time, and loss of personal time.

The wasted productivity hours because of traffic is equal to a monetary value that could be used
for other things such as earning extra income. Arsenio Balicasan, the Director General of the National
Economic Development Authority, said that Philippines loses P 2.4 billion per day in potential income as
a result of traffic congestion and loss productivity. It is a fact that most people wasted their precious time
on traffic jam. If we will reduce cars through temporarily restraint of car sales, the some of us will be
forced to take a public transportation system and would take a whole benefit of bus and car as it is quick
and cheap. Moreover, it would also be helpful to our financial status since petrol cost relatively expensive
to familys budget.

Ladies and gentlemen, the affirmative team believes that the selling of new cars should be
temporarily restrained. The solution to ease traffic congestion is not a long-term solution but rather a first
aid to ailing traffic problems. Unlike the widening of roads with a long span of time before it has been
accomplished, the restraint of car sales can immediately be executed. As the restraint of car sales has been
conducted, several alternative solutions may be raised to reduce traffic congestions. Some of which is the
alternative routes of the private vehicle, so that the public ones can travel along the road freely or
unhampered and also, the phasing out of vehicles that reached its economic life. Controlling and
restricting the increasing number of cars would definitely play a vital role in improving peoples health
and would also help in controlling factors that are the cause of deteriorating situation of the environment.
