June 2017
As the network is rapidly expanding we have taken the decision to run this committee term with two Chairs. This will
enable Jack and Eve to work closely together to promote the great work we do in the North East both regionally and
nationally. We asked Jack and Eve to give us a bit of information about themselves and why they chose to become part
of G4C...
I became involved with G4C in the summer of 2015. I attended the Summer BBQ event,
not really knowing anyone in the G4C or even how useful it would be. What I found was a
similar group of likeminded young professionals in the Construction sector, and two years on I
have made great contacts that are well respected and identified as potential future leaders within
their respective organisations. Everyone was very welcoming and it was fantastic to be made Co-Chair and be able to
implement ideas and strategies to help promote young professionals within the sector. I like to think myself and Eve
are very encouraging of anyone who is interested in getting involved with the G4C as it has been fantastic for my own
personal development.
My most memorable moments are the G4C Awards ceremonies. Its great to see the achievements of young professionals
in the region celebrated with a high profile event and being able to network with contacts who hopefully will be in
senior positions in the next 5, 10, 15 years.
Dr. Mehmet Chakkol and Max Finne from Warwick Business School presented
their research, highlighting the most valuable behavioural traits of an effective
collaborator, and motivating every attendee to reflect upon themselves and their
personal behaviour within the environments demanding collaboration. It was interesting to learn that trust is not the
key to achieving a successful collaborative partnership but, rather, is an outcome of an effective collaboration, while the
ability to think strategically, be a team player, and have good communication skills, are the top three traits enabling one
to be an effective collaborator.
David Hawkins from the Institute of Collaborative Working pointed out the importance of implementing standards
and systems facilitating collaboration at inter-organisational level, promoting the British Standard on Collaboration
(BS11000), as one of the ways to achieve this. The evening climaxed with a speech delivered by Don Ward from
Constructing Excellence who passionately outlined the relevance of collaboration to the construction industry and
emphasized its value for all parties including clients, contractors as well as designers.
It was an inspiring evening for all present. Many thanks to Julia Lydall, G4C National Chair, for organising and hosting
the event.
