MYP5 English A: Language and Literature

You have a test scheduled for Monday 19th June. It will be divided into two sections:

Section A :

This section is divided into three components:

1) You will be given a visual text to analyse and which pertains to the Unit The Harlem Renaissance and the global
context of Orientation in Space and Time. You will be asked to summarise, identify, interpret and justify different
elements of the text. You should spend a maximum of 20 minutes on this part and you will be assessed
according to Criterion A: Analysing.

2) Afterwards you will be given a poem related to the same global context and which features similar themes to
that of the visual. You are then tasked with writing a comparative response based on the visual and the poem.
You will narrow down your comparative analysis to three major elements (such as major themes, context, target
audiences, symbolism, literary devices, etc.). We will provide you with this list in the exam. All you have to do is
make sure you focus on three. For this part you will be assessed according to Criterion A: Analysing and Criterion
B: Organising and you should spend a total of 30 minutes on this component.

3) The last question in this section centres on creative writing. You will be given a prompt for which you will answer
from the perspective of either the persona in the poem or from one of the characters in the visual. Responses
will be graded according to Criterion C: Producing Text and Criterion D: Using Language. You should spend a
maximum of 15 minutes on this part.

Section B:

In this section you will be given an essay question. You will be provided with quotations from the major texts
analysed in class (Yann Martels Life of Pi, William Goldings Lord of the Flies and Ishmael Beahs A Long Way Gone) to
stimulate thinking. You should refer to at least one of these texts in your writing.

In your essay you must ensure that you provide an introduction with an effective thesis statement, body paragraphs
and an appropriate conclusion in which you provide a resolution to your arguments. Needless to say (though of
course Im going to say it anyway) the PEED structure must be incorporated in your writing.

Responses for this section will be graded according to Criteria A, B and D (Analysing, Organising and Using Language
respectively).

For this section you should dedicate a maximum of 45 minutes (including planning).
