consultancy firm known for the quality and uniqueness of its design work, and for
its attentiveness to client needs.

for us, and inspire us to create an ever-growing range of architectural expression.

important to review your garden regularly and carry out remedial work when
needed.

We provide a garden maintenance service to assist you with the regular upkeep of
your garden, whether or not you have used our landscaping services before.
Whatever type of garden you have, we will recommend a specific maintenance plan
to suit it and offer contracts either on a weekly, monthly or less regular basis
accordingly.

Serving mainly the Mbarara, Masaka, Jinja and Kampala areas, our well-trained
professional teams with over 5 years experience will draw up a written tailor-made
maintenance contract for every client.

The contract will specify the frequency of maintenance visits to your garden, and
will guarantee your losses.

It will describe the services to be carried out, such as

Pruning and supporting of trees and bushes
Disease control of plants and lawns
Mowing and weeding the lawn
Hedge trimming
Cleaning and removal of garden waste
Regularly checking the irrigation system and regulating it according to the
season
Keeping the garden neat and tidy

We are committed to ensuring that your garden is in perfect shape and gives you
pleasure all the year round.

Our high standards, reliability, the quality of our work and our reasonable rates are
what our reputation is based on.

17
LANDSCAPING

Our services range from the development of the overall garden design concept, to
designing and implementing soft and hard landscaping. Hard landscaping includes
choosing the right plants, laying lawns and pathways, constructing walls, as well as
installing irrigation systems and providing continuous maintenance.

We will ensure that the whole process, from initial concept to project completion, is
smooth and seamless and offers you value for money.

Our ultimate aim is to design the right garden that not only gives pleasure, but also
suits your lifestyle, matches the architecture of your home and adds value to your
property.

Landscape/Garden Design

It is essential that the garden design matches the style of your home, the
surrounding environment, as well as your way of life.

Our team includes a qualified landscape architect with the right training to ensure
that there is a strong relationship between internal and external spaces, as well as
architectural features.

We also offer the option of our 3D design feature to help you see your garden come
to life and accurately visualize the design before it is implemented so that you can be
confident that it fits in with your taste and your property.

Landscape Installation

The elements of a landscape that do not involve construction constitute soft

landscaping. They include trees, palms, shrubs, lawns and flowering plants.

Some of these elements can take years if not decades to mature and therefore require
thinking ahead, as they will form the backdrop of the landscape for years to come.

Trees that frame a view or provide shade, shrubs and bushes that ensure privacy,
flowering plants that follow a colour scheme, we will create your garden so that it
will be a space you want to use and will give you pleasure all the year round well
into the future.

A successful garden also needs an efficient irrigation system. We will also design the
right system to ensure that your garden receives the right amount of water at the

18
right time. We use the latest systems with electronic controls and timers so that your
garden can establish itself quickly and remain healthy for a long time to come, while
at the same time saving water and reducing your costs.

From choosing and planting trees, to improving your soil, establishing a successful
irrigation system, laying turf and creating planting themes, we offer expert advice
and execution.

Hard Landscaping paths, walls, paving

A successful garden must have good bone structure. Its layout and shape, the paths
and steps linking one section of the garden to another, its focal points or places to sit,
are all essential elements of good design.

Whether we create walls or fences, patios or decking, paths or stepping stones,

rockeries or ponds, we always make sure the materials we choose are in sympathy
with the house and both pleasing to the eye in terms of design and texture, as well as
constructed from good, reliable materials and within a clients budget.

Garden Types

Here is just a small sample of the projects that we have done.

Luxury garden

A luxury garden should reflect the style and taste of the discerning homeowner who
desires the highest standards of living. We can create exceptional outdoor living
spaces ranging from peaceful sanctuaries, to exotic oases. Elements such as flowing
waterfalls, artificial lakes, bubbling brooks with stone bridges or even fish ponds can
add value to a property. Romantic gazebos and pergolas further add to the mood
and create special areas for outdoor entertaining.

Tropical garden

Create the look and feel of the tropics with bright, intense hues and lush, dense
vegetation. Plants within a tropical garden typically reflect natural growth, usually
with large greenery, irregularly shaped leaves and interesting textures, while
splashes of colour and large species become focal points of interest and create a
stunning presentation.

19
Shade garden

The scorching dry season heat of Uganda makes outdoor living during the day
almost impossible. A garden designed to provide shade will enable you to sit and
entertain outside not just after dark. You also need to know what plants or shrubs
thrive in shady conditions.

Low maintenance garden

For holiday homes where youre not there all the time to give the garden the care it
needs, plants that require the minimum of attention are the way to go. Olive trees or
pine trees have adapted to the conditions and will survive no matter what you do, as
will oleanders and a host of herbs and low growing shrubs.

Scented garden

Design your garden so that it is a pleasure to your sense of smell as well as that of
sight. Jasmine is a much loved feature of Ugandan gardens, while the stronger
cestrum nocturnum that only flowers at night will give your garden an exotic feel in
the evenings.

Water garden

In a world where water is becoming an increasingly precious commodity, its

existence in a garden makes it all the more welcome. From a small pond or fountain
to a large swimming pool, any body of water is a focal point of interest. However,
the planting round a pond or pool needs to be carefully thought out and placed so
they do not shed too many leaves and flowers that would block the pool filters.

Colour-theme garden

A single colour scheme can be a striking statement. Go for only white flowering
plants with a background of green, playing with the different foliages, or have
splashes of colour in strategic spots. Or control the colour scheme so that it changes
with the seasons for a painterly effect as well as endless variety and interest.

Gravel garden

White gravel stones give a sense of neatness and Zen peacefulness, while at the same
time being practical as they eliminate the need for mowing a lawn and keep weeds
at bay.

20
Lawn garden

Simple elements make up this garden, a large expanse of lawn framed with shrubs
and trees.

Patio, veranda or roof garden

Patios, or paved areas, serve as an extension of the house, providing an external

room for al fresco living. For city dwellers who dont have the luxury of a garden per
se, a veranda can be transformed into a lush garden with plants grown in large
containers.

Lakeside garden

If youre lucky enough to have a garden with a view of the lake, you dont want to
plant anything that will obstruct it. Frame it instead with a tall cypress tree or lead
the eye to it with a broad expanse of lawn.

Pergolas and trellises

A splash of colourful clematis climbing up a trailer will give a garden height and
visual interest. A cascading wisteria over a pergola makes a beautiful and sweet-
smelling arcade.

Paths and paving

Paved parts of a garden give as much mood and style to a garden as do plants.
Paths divide the garden into different areas, define spaces and link them together,
while paved areas can be attractive areas for entertaining and sitting outside

After sales service

Rest assured that after your garden has been designed and realised, we will not
disappear. Our gardens come with our personal guarantee in the form of continuous
after-sales assistance and support from our experts.

Should anything occur that requires fixing in the gardens that we have created, we

THE DESIGN APPROACH

It is one good thing to know what to do but equally another to know how and when
to do it. The design approach refers to the systematic programme process through
which a design idea is conceived and its challenges/problems accepted, and it is
then synthesized through problem-solving techniques; solutions are conceived
through design realization techniques these solutions are processed thematically
into an integral design unit and implemented. The design then grows under care
until it matures. We have divided our design approach into four (4) major
programme categories, each of which is typified by a set of clearly marked activity
specifications.

1. Project Contracting

This is the most client-oriented phase of our design approach because it in this phase
that we actively engage with our sponsoring client in order to establish the fate of
the project. It is characterized by the following sequence of activities:-

a) Client Brief: This is the first meeting or set of meetings in which the client
introduces the project to the designer while highlighting their inspirations
basing on similar completed projects. Meanwhile, the designer observes this
brief carefully while placing it in perspective in relation to past project design
experiences.

b) Initial Project Site Visit: Upon evaluation of the issue based on the previous
meeting(s), the client permits physical access to the project site to the
designer. During this visit, the designer is bale to establish a rough estimate
of: the site location, soil quality, climate, relief, topography, boundaries,
neighborhood and available resources.

c) Project Brief Analysis: At this stage, we analyze the clients brief encodings
and compare them with our site assessments to frame a client profile.

d) The Client Profile: This is a fact file we build of the project in question in
regard to the analysis of the previous assessments. Remember we still refer to
this activity as client profile because even at this stage we still view the project
in the image of the client who has been the brief encoder.

e) Design Criteria: In this activity, we practice projection of topics which are as

typically descriptive of the client profile as possible in effort to arrive at a
theme or set of themes through which we can closely address the issues as of
our client profile.

22
f) Brief Analysis Report: This is the document we produce of our analyses and
approach, in reply to our client's brief and our previous assessments.

g) Quote: With help of the facts we have documented about the project, we
attach a figurative estimate to the requirements of implementation.

h) Contracting: With the help of the brief we are able to get a feedback from our
client. The report and feedback prepare both our design team and the
sponsoring client to set up a contracting body to document agreement of
terms and conditions of how to manage the project.

2. Project Planning

Project planning is the second most sensitive program in our design approach after
contracting. This activity is marked by:-

a) Survey: Collection of detailed important information to determine the quality

and quantity of the space we are going to work with, inclusive of
measurements.

b) Research: In this practice we study a few such related projects for

comparisons and contrasts.

c) Schematics: This is the most studious practice of our project planning because
it is through this activity that we can realize and consolidate the subject
matter into a functionary design. This involves among others, technical and
architectural drawings, sketches and cartoons, photography, artistry, etc.
However, without objective information about our subject matter, this process
can be too studious.

d) Critique: This stage is important because it engages both teams to debate and
evaluate the performance of the report.

e) Contracting: This refers to establishment of terms and conditions of

agreement of work.

3. Project Implementation

This is the practical and materialistic program of our design approach. It is sub-
divided into management and technical parts.

23
a) Management
This part is marked by: reorganization of project management structures;
allocation of project funds; mobilization of plant, equipment and labour force;
and work scheduling.

b) Technical
This part is marked by the following clearly staged steps.
i. Clearance.
ii. The design Mark out.
iii. Landscaping (hardscaping, landscaping)
iv. Procurement and logistics(selection, transportation and storage)
v. Landscape construction.
vi. Gardening and instant maintenance.
vii. Clean up.
viii. General maintenance and care.
ix. Handover.

4. Staff Training

PLANET DESIGN will always be ready to provide post-landscape project design

training to a Clients staff to enable them continue with landscape maintenance two
(2) years hence. Historically, landscape designers are trained by apprenticing. Other
routes of training are through informal apprenticeships with practicing landscape
designers, landscape architects, landscape contractors, gardeners, nurseries and
garden centers, and docent programs at botanical and public gardens. Since the
landscape designer title does not have college degree or licensing requirements to be
used, there is a very wide range of sophistication, aesthetic talent, technical expertise,
and specialty strengths to be responsibly matched with specific client and project
requirements.

LOGO DESIGN AND BRANDING

We are also specialists in logo design in the Kampala area and other parts of Uganda.
Our corporate identity and branding solutions are tailored to your specific brief,
based on detailed appraisal of your company, your values, your marketplace.

Logo Design
Logo Design has consistently been one of our strong points as a design company
over the years.

More than a logo design. A strong identity implemented consistently across all your
communications helps ensure that your business conveys the right message to your
audience all-important in building a successful brand.

Your logo design or brand image should be one of your strongest assets,
communicating the essence of your business and what you aspire to. Getting this
basic foundation of your company image right will ensure cohesive presentation for
all your material.

An Outline to Successful Branding

An effective brand strategy gives you a major edge in increasingly competitive
markets.

But what exactly does branding mean? Simply put, your brand is your promise to
your customer. It tells them what they can expect from your products and services,
and it differentiates your offering from that of your competitors. Your brand is
derived from who you are, who you want to be and who people perceive you to be.

Are you the innovative maverick in your industry? Or the experienced, reliable one?
Is your product the high-cost, high-quality option, or the low-cost, high-value
option? You cant be both, and you cant be all things to all people. Who you are
should be based to some extent on who your target customers want and need you to
be.

Branding Solutions
The foundation of your brand is your logo design. Your website, packaging and
promotional materialsall of which should integrate your logocommunicate your
brand.

Your brand strategy is how, what, where, when and to whom you plan on
communicating and delivering on your brand messages. Where you advertise is part
of your brand strategy. Your distribution channels are also part of your brand

25
strategy. And what you communicate visually and verbally are part of your brand
strategy, too.

Consistent, strategic branding leads to a strong brand equity, which means the
added value brought to your companys products or services that allows you to
charge more for your brand than what identical, unbranded products command. The
most obvious example of this is Coke vs. a generic soda. Because Coca-Cola has built
a powerful brand equity, it can charge more for its productand customers will pay
that higher price.

The added value intrinsic to brand equity frequently comes in the form of perceived
quality or emotional attachment. For example, Mukwano Group sometimes
associates its products with star athletes, hoping customers will transfer their
emotional attachment from the athlete to the product. For Mukwano Group, its not
just the Aqua Sipi mineral waters qualities that sell the bottled water product.
