PHOTOGRAPH OF A SIGNIFICANT MEETING OF THE EAST AND THE WEST

When Bro. Lawrie met Bro. William Branham in April 1960 in USA, he was baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ by Bro. Branham. A photograph was taken of them in a close hug during his stay there. There does not seem to be any photograph of such closeness of Bro. Branham with anybody else except his wife. (The photograph is attached herewith).

He also seems to have mentioned to Bro. Lawrie that the photograph would be useful for his future visits to United States of America. True to the words of Bro. William Branham, when Bro. Lawrie visited the United States in 1967, this photograph was very useful for introduction amongst the believers of the Message of Bro. Branham.

PREFACE

We are very happy and glad to bring out the Biography of Bro. R. Paulaseer Lawrie of India, a man chosen and used of God mightily in our generation. His followers believe that he has been revealed as the Son of Man and anointed Son of David that is to appear in these last days.

He is a Great Person whom we understand to be the Word of Life in human flesh and also the Faithful and True Witness according to the Scripture. He is also believed to be Christ, The Mighty Angel of Revelation 10 whose coming was foretold and forerun by the present day Elijah, Seventh Church Angel and Forerunner - William Marrion Branham.

What we have seen heard and handled of the Word of Life which was from the beginning and was made flesh in our days we declare and bring forth here for the reader so that you also may have fellowship with us in this glorious Truth and that your joy may be full.

This Biography had been already brought out earlier in the year 1973 by Brother Lawrence D. Dale of USA who had been in close association with Bro. William Branham and who had also come to India and stayed with Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie at the Manujothi Ashram for five years. The result of his work was the book titled The Lightning From The East

However mention should be made that there were also others who were involved in producing the book such as Bro. Manley Ottis Dobbins Jr., D.D., USA, Sister Susanna Dale Baker, daughter of Bro. L.D. Dale, USA, Dr. (Miss) Soundarabai Oliver, Dr. S.C. Jacob, Bro. J.W. Arulanandam, Rev. V. Jothipackiam, B.D., Sis. Priscilla Dorcas Samuel, Mr. P. J. Prasad, a news writer, Dr. Shiva N. Tewari, Ph.D., USA, Bro. Manfred Mengel of Germany and etc. without whose efforts it would not have been possible to bring out this work.

Since this book contains only the incidents up to the year 1973 it was found necessary to write everything that followed thereafter and also certain other things known only to the members of the Lawrie family. The believers and well-wishers of the ministry had requested me to write what I knew apart from that which is already given in the book for the benefit of one and all. I am not able to elaborate further since this edition is meant for the website.

I had no idea or intention to open a website for the Lawrie Ministries since it did not cross my mind. But Brothers Anand Mallikarjun and Alexander Prabhu Manickavasagam and Bro. M. Edwin Charles suggested the idea and encouraged me very much to open the website www.lawrieministries.net in September 2006.

Bro. Anand, being the webmaster also suggested that I put up the Biography of Bro. Lawrie on the website which seemed to be a grand idea. Therefore, taking this to be the leading of the Spirit of God, I had chosen to write what I knew in addition to what is already given in the book and host it on the website.

My son Ophir Raja Lawrie is a minister of the Word and has been of great help in the computer ministry. He has been maintaining the function of the computers and had seen to it that the computer always functioned properly. Thus the work could go on without let or hindrance.

Mention also must be made of Bro. T. J. Chelliah an evangelist and an ex-officer of Indian Airlines who had known Bro. Lawrie from the 1950s, Bro. C. Andrews Ramakrishnan, Bro. V.A. Jeyapragasam, Bro. A. Vincent Jayakumar, Bro. A. Ezra Ebenezer and others whose help and cooperation made it possible to bring out the Biography at this time for the website.

I do sincerely hope that the readers would be enlightened and uplifted spiritually by the contents of this Biography so that they might understand the True Facts of these things wrought by the Faith work of God in our generation through Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie and have the revelation of the Son of David.

DEARLY BELOVED READERS

Here is a True story of a Man chosen of God in this generation. When we read this Biography we can understand how God deals with an individual to prepare him so that he could be used to fulfill the most important mystery of God for the Bride of Christ. In the Second Coming of Christ, He is to reveal himself as the Son of Man and Son of David.

We understand that the message concerning the Son of David had been revealed by Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie. This causes some questions to rise such as 1. Who is this Son of David? 2. How do we identify the Son of David? 3. How can one prove that Bro. Lawrie is that Person? 4. Are there records of genealogy to trace his ancestry to King David? And etc.

Some people may ask how one can prove that Bro. Lawrie comes in the physical line of King David. There are people who would not believe even if they were shown records of birth. In such a case what is the possibility of identifying the Son of David and those of the House of David without the records of genealogy?

IDENTIFYING THE LOST TRIBES

We all understand that the tribes of Israel had been scattered in all directions and have lost their identity. The records of their genealogy are not available after a certain generation and hence they lost their identity. Now that the scattered tribes of Israel have lost their identity, one wonders whether there is any way to find out and confirm their identity in a foolproof manner.

In the days of Ezra and Nehemiah, there were those children of the priests who were put away from the priesthood and not allowed to eat of the most holy things just because their names were not found in the register of genealogy. They could not prove beyond doubt that they were of the Children of Israel and were treated as ones who had lost their identity. Therefore a foolproof method was required to confirm and prove their identity without any question.

Then the Tirshatha (Governor) Nehemiah said that they needed a priest with the Urim and Thummim to confirm their identity even if they did not have the records of their genealogy (Ezra 2: 61-63, Nehemiah 7: 61-65). Therefore we understand that with the help of Urim and Thummim the lost identity could be found and confirmed beyond any doubt in an infallible and foolproof manner without any question.

URIM AND THUMMIM

In the Old Testament days, they had the Urim and Thummim which was the breast-plate of Aaron with 12 stones on it representing the 12 tribes of Israel (Exodus 28: 30, Numbers 27: 21, I Samuel 23: 9-12, I Samuel 28: 6). Sometimes there were people said to be prophets or men of God who prophesied or claimed to have a Word, a Vision or a Dream from the Lord.

Urim and Thummim means Lights and Perfections. When there was a need to confirm whether those prophecies, words, visions and dreams were from the Lord, the High Priest had to put on his holy garments and the Urim and Thummim. Then the prophet or dreamer was asked to speak out the word, dream or vision before the Urim and Thummim.

If it was not of God, the Urim And Thummim was dormant. But if it was of God, a supernatural light reflected on the stones resulting in a rainbow colouring across there, confirming it. It was an infallible and foolproof evidence. If the supernatural light did not flicker on there, the prophecy was wrong and not from the Lord no matter how real it might have sounded to the listener.

PRESENT DAY URIM AND THUMMIM

Now that the Aaronic priesthood has been done away with, we need an Urim and Thummim to understand the Truth correctly and to identify the Son of David. Today we have an Urim and Thummim which is God’s Word - The Holy Bible. Just as there were 12 Patriarchs in the Old Testament, we have 12 Apostles in the New Testament.

The Types, Shadows and Patterns, Message, Revelations of the Day and the Supernatural vindications that have the foundation on the 12 Apostles’ doctrines are the lights that prove the ministry, message and messenger of our days (II Peter 1: 19, 3: 2, Jude 17, Revelation 21: 14). Though Apostle Peter was an eye witness in the Mount of Transfiguration, he claims that the written Word to be more sure (II Peter 1: 16-18, 19).

The Great Light of God which was manifesting in the ministry of John the Baptist has been manifesting again in our Generation in the ministry of Bro. William Branham whom the Light identified and vindicated as the forerunner to the Second Coming of Christ and as the Messenger to the Seventh (Last) Church Age and also as Elijah.

William Branham was given the revelation of the Seven Churches and Seven Seals to awaken the Bride of Christ and to identify and introduce the Lion of the Tribe of Judah who is also the Kinsman Redeemer and the Son of David (Revelation 5: 1-5, 10: 1-7, Matthew 25: 6-7), It is similar to John the Baptist introducing Jesus as the Lamb of God in his days.

During the First Ever Moon-landing, on July 21, 1969 (IST) The Lord Jesus gave Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie the revelation required for the Coming of Christ and came down into Him at Chicago, U.S.A. A few days earlier a Mount of Transfiguration incident was reported. When Bro. Lawrie was preaching on the 23rd Psalm, flames of fire went forth from his eyes and he was transfigured.

Great Revelations concerning the Plan of Redemption, The Preparation of the Bride of Christ, The Son of David, The Seven Unwritten Thunders, New Name and many other things hitherto unknown were revealed by Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie for the preparation of the Bride of Christ. His New Message compared with the rest of the Word from Genesis to Revelation.

HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THE MESSENGER

Any such ministry will have to fulfill at least the following conditions, though there is a lot more to it.

1. He must have a New Message that compares with the rest of the Word from Genesis to Revelation with perfect Types and Shadows.

2. If a person has the ministry of the Mighty Angel of Revelation 10, he must have the revelation to finish the mystery of God uttered by the Seven Thunders (Revelation 10: 1-7).

3. If a person is Christ, He must have the Revelation of God coming down into Him as Jesus did.

4. If a person is the Bridegroom, he must have the message to gather the Bride together and prepare her for the Rapturing Faith.

5. If a person is the King of Kings with the Voice of a Lion, he must have the Revelation and Message about the Son of David and the Kingdom (Isaiah 22: 22, Revelation 3: 7, 10: 3).

One can easily see from the above statements that the Ministry of Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie, His Ministry and His Message fulfill all those conditions.

In a family, when the members talk about the family secrets, the others usually do not understand. But the family members can easily understand. They know what, when and where about their family possessions. In the same way, when the believers are able to understand the Message of the Son of David and the secrets of the Kingdom we can easily infer that they belong to the House of David.

Therefore the Message, Messenger and Revelations of the Day according to the Scriptural Patterns, Types and Shadows and the Supernatural vindications as a whole make up the True Identifying Factors. With these thoughts in mind, if this Biography is approached it will help us to get a fuller understanding of the Son of David.

THE FORERUNNER

Mention should be made about the mighty ministry of Bro. William Marrion Branham of the United States of America that shook the world. He had the ministry of Elijah of the Last days to forerun the Second Coming of Christ in our generation.

The Great Light of God which was manifesting in the ministry of John the Baptist has been manifesting again in our Generation in the ministry of Bro. William Branham whom the Light identified and vindicated as the forerunner to the Second Coming of Christ and as the Messenger to the Seventh (Last) Church Age and also as Elijah.

He was not afraid to preach the Truth and he strongly condemned the Christian churches for deviating from the Word of God. But the organized churches and denominations did not even acknowledge him to be a Man sent from God. As John was the greatest prophet messenger before the coming of Jesus Christ (Matthew 11: 11-14), William Branham had the greatest message and ministry manifesting the Power of God before the Second Coming of Christ.

On June 11, 1933, William Branham was conducting a baptismal service after an Open-Air Gospel meeting on the bank of the Ohio River, Jeffersonville, Indiana, U.S.A. About 4000 people had gathered for this service. As he was about to baptize the seventeenth convert he heard A Voice saying, Look Up! Looking up, William Branham saw a strange Light, like a star, whirling down toward him, coming to a stop just above him.

The witnesses standing on the bank of the River were over-whelmed by this unexplainable phenomenon. Some ran for fear; others fell to their knees and worshipped. Many pondered the meaning of this remarkable occurrence. The Voice spoke to William Branham from the Light saying: As John the Baptist was sent forth to forerun the First Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are sent forth with the message to forerun His Second Coming.

This was the commission given to William Branham. What was the significance or meaning of that Light? was the question in everybody’s mind. There should be still some who had witnessed this incident, living today. The True believer of the Word of God would understand the significance and strive for the revelation of the Person who has been introduced by William Branham.

When William Branham waited on the Lord to reveal to him the mystery of that Great Light, the Light appeared and a Swarthy Man (of dark complexion) emerged from the Light. He appeared to be about 5'6" (168 cm) weighing about 200 pounds (90 kgs). He claimed that He was the Angel of the Lord (The Lord Himself) and that he had come to explain him about his ministry. This was the voice William Branham had been hearing from his childhood and now he saw His form. William Branham’s ministry was to forerun the coming of this Great Person in flesh and introduce him.

The Mysteries of the Book of Redemption, sealed with Seven Seals were revealed to him to be given to the Bride of Christ to awaken her for the Second Coming of Christ and to introduce the Lion of the Tribe of Juda (Revelation 5: 1-5, 10: 1-7, Matthew 25: 6-7). John the Baptist had introduced the Lamb of God in the First Coming (John 1: 29).

Prophet William Branham claimed that he had introduced a Great Person as Christ, The Word who came to him and met him in the water just like John the Baptist introduced into the world, Jesus Christ who came to him and met him in the water. This Great Person is the End-time Messiah. He is the Shiloh who gathers and unites people under Him and fulfills all the prophecies in the End-time as the Son of Man and Son of David (Genesis 49: 10).

As a forerunner to the Second Coming, Bro. Branham has made many direct statements regarding God coming down and Tabernacled in a man in flesh in this generation. He has also thrown many hints for the people with spiritual insight. I sincerely hope that the believers would understand them and find the person whom Bro. Branham had introduced as Christ the Son of David rising from the East.

Apart from the statements he had made concerning the Coming of Christ, he had prophesied about the end of the Gentile Christian Age. He had a series of seven visions about the end-time in which the first five are already fulfilled. In 1962 March, he had prophesied that there would be a settlement regarding the city of Berlin which would be a Roman revival.

Accordingly the Soviet Empire fell and brought the upheaval of all world governments. In 1989 June, the Wall of Berlin was broken and both East and West Germany were united into one. It was the beginning of Globalization. Now we see the entire world coming under this system.

He had prophesied that the city of Los Angeles would go down into the ocean. He had mentioned about a woman President coming to power in America. He also speaks of a Pope from the United States (1954). These are some of the signs that should be watched.

HINTS FROM THE FORERUNNER

I have given briefly below what I had understood from the Messages of Bro. William Marrion Branham that may help the reader to ponder over.

1. But one of these days, there’s a great magnate coming from the East, called the Son of God, that’ll sweep this land.

2. Somebody try and get somebody to the moon. God’s trying to get somebody to heaven.

3. They can trying to go to the moon and… That’s another Tower of Babel.

4. Church has received a heavenly Sign: an Astronaut.

5. When the WORD here unites with the PERSON, and they two become one, and then what does it do then? It manifests the SON OF MAN again.

6. The Word come to the prophet in this dispensation of grace in the WATER. I thought you would catch it. IN THE WATER!

7. And John said, Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. See? So it—it paralleled it in every way, and I know it will.

8. It may be time. It may be the hour now, that this Great Person that we’re expecting to rise on the scene may rise on the scene. Maybe this ministry that I have tried to take people back to the Word has laid a foundation; and if it has, I’ll be leaving you for good. There won’t be two of us here the same time. See? If it is, he will increase, I’ll decrease. I don’t know. But I have been privileged by God to look and see.

9. O God, may I be able to hand this old Sword over to somebody else that’ll be honest with It, Lord, and will pack the truth.

10. My time’s up now. I’ve introduced you to Him. I must decrease now; I must go off the scene. He will take over from here. The millennium will be on right away.

11. Then when he seen that Light coming down, spread out like a dove and lit upon Him, he said, There He is. That’s Him. But John was the only one that saw It.

12. It comes just like John the Baptist. It comes like the birth of our Lord in a stable.

13. He come as from a little lady that lived down in the—in—in a little old mean country called Nazareth……Shivers me to think it. And to see the same thing reoccurring again… God cannot change.

14. When our Lord appears here on earth, He will be riding on a snow white horse, and He will be completely, fully, the Emmanuel, the Word of God incarnate in a man.

15. See, it’s Son of man, Jesus Christ, will come down in human flesh among us.

16. But in that day, oh God, there’ll be a Branch rise up from David.

17. Watch that Capital ‘L’ and see if it isn’t right.

18. I’ll admit we have got a lot of impersonators, but examine the FIRST ONE, the Original.

19. When this comes to pass, it’ll be great, big like this and it’ll be so humble. You’ll miss the whole thing and just go right on.

20. When you see God come from the heaven, stand before groups of men, and stand there, declare Himself just as He ever did… And that’s the Truth, and this Bible open. See?

21. It was easy for those Jews who’d been taught through generations to believe that there was a great supernatural God. But to think that that God had come down and was manifesting Himself through the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ, God tabernacled in a Body of flesh, that was a little too much for them to—to understand.

22. God will appear again among His people in Human flesh.

23. He was so nice to come down and let me have my picture taken with Him.

THE ROOTS

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots (Isaiah 11: 1).

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star (Revelation 22: 16).

Christianity came to India earlier than almost anywhere else outside its own home in the Middle East. St. Thomas, an Apostle of Jesus Christ is believed to have come to the south of India in the first century in the year 52 A.D. and had made many converts. He had done many miracles. No one is able to understand what made him come to the southern part of India.

Jesus commanded his disciples to go to the lost sheep of Israel since He himself was sent to the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 10: 5-6, 15: 24). We find that the disciples of Jesus Christ ministered to the scattered tribes of Israel (James 1: 1, I Peter 1: 1-2, Acts. 2: 5-11). It implies that wherever the disciples ministered, scattered tribes of Israel were found. We understand that there were scattered tribes of Israel in the southern part of India too to whom Apostle Thomas ministered.

Each Tribe of Israel was given its place around the Tabernacle in all four directions in the days of Moses. It is also worth noting that the Tribe of Judah was placed to the East of the Tabernacle. When the Tribes of Israel were scattered in all four directions under the sun, the scattering was mostly done according to the directions in which they were placed around the Tabernacle.

Swami Vivekananda a very esteemed and respected Indian Philosopher, Scholar and Speaker both in India and abroad, related in his Chicago Address delivered on 11th Sept. 1893 that the purest remnant of the Israelites came to South India seeking refuge in the very year (70 A.D.) in which their holy temple was destroyed by the Romans whom the South Indians welcomed cordially with open arms.

According to a publication of the Tourist Department of the Government of India, a community known as the White Jews came to South India in the ships of King Solomon and the present day coastal village of Puvar (Poovaatrumugham) in Kerala is believed to be the port of Ophir where they traded gold and silver to buy the spices of the east. Small numbers of White Jews still live in Cochin though many had migrated to Israel.

This Puvar lies in the old Travancore province comprising the areas that include the districts of Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. A large community of people called Natans named after Nathan - a full brother of King Solomon, later called Nadars dwell in these districts. They are the descendents of the White Jews who settled there.

Many of them scattered Jews had married from the local communities though some had tried to hold to their identity. It makes no difference who the wives were, as the blood line is carried forward through the husbands only (Jeremiah 29: 6). But in general, their identity had been lost. In spite of it their Royal characters had not been lost.

Bro. Lawrie’s forefathers came from this group of people who are the direct offsprings of Nathan the son of David; they have been a hidden tribe of Judah who had lost their identity. This was clearly documented by the British when they ruled India.

They were curious about the origin of this Nadar community as they were stubbornly so proud. When the British tried to control them during their rule and force them to do the demeaning manual labour, building roads and houses, they proudly cried, The head that wore the crown will never carry sand.

The British then traced the ancestry establishing this lineage from Nathan, King David’s son and King Solomon’s full brother. For thousands of years through the caste system in India, the intermingling had not been too much. The Royal Seed of David has been preserved.

Though there had been some intermingling, we all know that the seed always comes through the man. We do not have a complete genealogy but the foreordained seed has been passing and traveling through the ages like a meandering stream until the time it is revealed and identified by the Message in these last days.

This is the region where Apostle Thomas was ministering and before taking the course to Mylapore, Chennai where he was martyred. Apostle Thomas landed at Kodungalur near Cochin, in present day Kerala. From there he started moving south which was called Travancore. He had walked thousands of miles in his grueling ministry. Apostle Thomas had dedicated Churches during his ministry here.

Those of the Faith Seed of Abraham received the message of Jesus Christ preached by Apostle Thomas. Jesus Said, My sheep hear my voice. The Faith seed of Abraham are sensitive to the Message relating to the promises given to Abraham. The Message too helps us to identify the Messenger since the Message and Message are one.

Apostle Thomas could believe that Jesus had risen from the dead only after seeing the nail marks in the hands of Jesus and thrusting his hand into his side. He saw and believed. But Jesus told him, Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Little did Apostle Thomas realize then that the region where he was ministering would produce in the Last days, Word Believers who would not see and believe, but believe and see the Glory of God and also recognize through the Word of God, the very Son of God that is to appear in the Last days.

CHAPTER ONE

IN THE BEGINNING

IN GENERAL

When a Biography is written about a person, there are certain questions that arise. Whom is this Biography written about? What is the need to write about this person? Why is he considered important enough to have his Biography written? What had he achieved for mankind? Does he find his place in the Scriptures?

The Scriptures tell us about the Coming of Christ to take the Bride in the Rapture. There are hundreds of references in the Bible to this Second Coming of Christ. According to Dr. Manley O. Dobbins Jr. of USA, there are 318 such references. The Son of Man is to appear on earth in these last days and reveal Himself to the Bride of Christ and prepare her for the Rapturing faith for Glorification.

If Scriptural signs are any indication, this is now time for God (Messiah) to come back to claim His Bride and then present Himself (make Himself known) to Israel. Thus we see God again stepping forth in these last days to assume a Physical Relationship to man as the Son of David, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and Bridegroom of the Gentile Bride.

The Old Testament and New Testament are replete with prophecies concerning Him. He is the Root and Offspring of David, the Righteous Branch, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Man-Child of Revelation 12: 5 who will rule the world with a rod of iron. He is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of Man, the Son of God and the Son of David. It is God who chooses His man for every age and moulds his character to suit His purpose for which he is raised.

Prophet William Branham had the Call, Ministry and Message to forerun the Second Coming of Christ. He had given a number of prophecies and hints concerning the time, signs, mode and etc. of the Coming of this Great person who is also the Man-Child mentioned to rule all nations with a rod of iron and to be caught up to God and to His throne.(Revelation 12: 1-5). The words that that man would say, the way he acted, would blind others and open other’s eyes. See? He dressed the man in the type of dress that he was, the nature, the ambition, and everything, just the way he had to be, just perfectly selected for that certain people that He’d call for that certain age. While others would stand, and look at him, and say, Well I can’t… There’s… I—I can’t… See, they were blinded.

THE BEGINNING

Brother Rasiah Paulaseer Lawrie is believed to be this anointed and appointed one of God to claim Adam’s birthright on the basis of the Scriptures. He is the theme of this Biography and fits into the entire criterion set forth by the Scriptures and also by the prophetic predictions of Bro. William Branham, the Prophet Messenger of this age we dwell in.

This makes Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie a Very Important Person who is to become the greatest, mightiest and most highly exalted personage in the whole history of mankind and hence the need for the writing of his Biography. This Great Person Paulaseer Lawrie was born on February 24, 1921 in Lakshmi Tea Estate, Munnar of Kerala, South India.

His ancestry can be traced to old Travancore Region, now parts of the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He is said to be of the Jewish stock – a splinter group of the Israelites scattered all over the world, and of the tribe of Judah in the lineage of Nathan a full brother of King Solomon.

His predecessors landed at the ancient port of Puvar, which was the Ophir of Biblical days where they traded gold and silver to buy the spices of the east. (Ref: Booklet – India - page no.13 - published by the Department of Tourism, Government of India in 1970). They settled in Kanyakumari District (Cape Comorin) and Tiruvananthapuram district which was the southern part of the Travancore region.

During the reign of the Travancore Kings, a persecution arose in these parts to suppress the local people. A government edict was promulgated that the women of this community will not wear any covering dress above their waist thus exposing their breasts. Also members of this community were forbidden to walk on certain streets.

This ignominy drove them from those parts and they settled at the area now called Adayal Mudalur (Meaning – The First Village) because the people of this village were the first ones to embrace Christianity later. They worshipped the local deities and intermarried with those who had earlier migrated to this area. It was a fulfillment of what was spoken by Moses that they would be carried away and worship wood and stone (Deuteronomy 28: 36).

Bro. Lawrie’s great grandfather, Sudalaimadan Natan, was the seventh child of the family. He had such a craving in his heart to know God that in his quest he made a coffin (casket) and lay in it, refusing to eat or drink till such time God revealed Himself to him.

He was blessed with the vision of the crucified Christ (just like the vision Sadhu Sundar Singh had of Christ) which gave him great peace of mind and remission of sin. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and became a Christian and took on the new name, Swamiadian Nadar. Infuriated by this his folks drove him out of their fold and declared him as the Lost Son.

All his life this great-grandparent of Bro. Lawrie stood firm in his belief. He was a mighty witness for the Lord Jesus Christ having a healing ministry. His grave at Mudalur is venerated by people of every caste and creed even today after nearly 200 years. They carry away handfuls of soil from his grave site as it is claimed to have healing power.

The grandfather of Bro. Lawrie, Mr. Suvisesha Muthu Ponnuswamy, was a Tamil Pundit (Master of the language, Tamil) and taught the language to the foreign missionaries. He had a bakery in Nagercoil. One day one Mr. Lawrie Muthukrishna of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) came to the bakery with his tale of woe that some one had picked his pocket and that he had lost all the money. He was a famous fingerprint expert and Chief of the Polytechnic & Government Auditors of Sri Lanka.

He had lost all hope of returning to Sri Lanka. Mr. Ponnuswamy Nadar helped him out of this predicament by lending him the needed cash. It was in repayment to this act of kindness that this Government official of Sri Lanka took Bro. Lawrie’s father Mr. Rasiah with him to Sri Lanka and took on the responsibility of educating him.

Bro.Lawrie’s grandfather, on his mother’s side, is the famous Siddhar, a legend in his life time. His descendants are even now called the Siddhar family. The story goes that this Mr. Siddhar met an unknown Rishi (Sage) and received from him the secrets of setting broken bones and of valuable medicinal herbs, all written on foils of palm leaves.

(Like scrolls of Jews, the ancient Tamilians had recorded their valuable documents on Palm-leaf manuscripts called Yedus). This art of bone setting and medicines has been handed down from generation to generation and is carefully guarded as a family secret.

His father, Mr. S. Deva Rasiah, under the aegis of Mr. Lawrie Muthukrishna became a teacher in the Polytechnic College, and later worked in the Galaha Company as the Secretary to the General Manager. On an official visit to the Company’s Tea Estates in Munnar, India, he happened to stay with the Head Clerk at Laskshmi Estate, whose daughter he married later.

He took a long leave and stayed with his wife’s parents till Paulaseer was born. The child was named after Lawrie Muthukrishna and was baptized in the Church of England, Munnar by sprinkling of water and was christened Paulaseer Lawrie Muthukrishna.

CHILDHOOD

Soon after the baptism, Mr. Rasiah took his wife and child over to Ceylon (Sri Lanka). One evening young Paulaseer (18 months old) was sitting on his dad’s lap as he came home from his office. A Sinhala (Native of Sri Lanka), who must have had a grievance against Mr. Rasiah, advanced towards them with a drawn knife with an intent to murder them both. As he closed in on them, a bolt of lightning intervened and the Sinhalese man rolled on the ground screaming with fright and cringed to be forgiven.

Taking this as Divine intervention to save the life of his child, Mr. Rasiah took extra pains to bring him up in the fear of God. He used to take the boy to the Galle Face Green by the ocean in the evenings for prayer and meditation. On one such evening when his father was deep in meditation, Paulaseer who was about five years walked right into the sea waves and would have been drowned if a passerby did not pull him out in time.

When Mr. Rasiah and his wife had more children, the parents decided that the mother should go back to India with the children and get them all into schools. They built a house at Nazareth where the mother and children lived for many years while the father commuted back and forth from Sri Lanka whenever possible.

When Mr. Rasiah was leaving Nazareth, young Paulaseer was so adamant and insisted that he should be with his father that he clung to the wheel of the departing vehicle refusing to let go. His father then relented and took Paulaseer with him to Sri Lanka.

Mr. Rasiah was recruited into the Salvation Army and rose to the rank of a Sergeant Major. He and his wife had wished very much to be inducted into the Salvation Army for full-time service and even had the necessary uniforms made for them. When his wife went over to India this plan had to be dropped. Mr. Rasiah joined the Galle Face Christ Church instead and worked for the spiritual uplift of the Church members. During this time, young Paulaseer went to the Methodist School in Colpetty, Colombo.

As a child Paulaseer had been passed under the banner of Salvation Army and later they dedicated him to God’s work in the Christ Church, an act considered to be most unusual. Mr. Rasiah got bitter about the factions and cliques among the Church elders.

Their bickering and strivings for power during the election to Church offices and their misappropriation of the Church funds embittered him so much that he resisted them openly. He reproved even God for allowing such things to happen in his Church. He got so worked up that he spent sleepless nights.

He attended office regularly but had no sleep during the nights that he cracked up with nervous breakdown. During these days of sickness, Mr. Rasiah searched his heart that he came closer to God as never before, and found greater peace and tranquility. This had a direct bearing on young Paulaseer, as every evening after his father’s recovery, he went along with him to the seashore for prayers. The elder imparted his spiritual experience to his son.

BOYHOOD

Paulaseer outgrew the school he was studying at in Sri Lanka and he returned to Nazareth to further his education staying this time with his mother and younger brothers and sisters. There were eight children in all, five boys and three girls. Staying with the mother the children lacked the controlling factor of their father who was at Sri Lanka and visited the family for short spells only.

Thus unbridled, Paulaseer accumulated all the bad habits of the local boys. He became virtually a leader of young boys who were uncontrolled and unruly. They played pranks which were a menace to many houses. Being the eldest son, his mother doted on Paulaseer and gave him all the money he demanded of her which he spent unscrupulously and for mischievous deeds. Yet deep down in his heart he had the fear of God.

In studies, Paulaseer was well ahead in his class except Mathematics. His flat plumpy body earned him such nicknames as Roller, Barrel and Dwarf. His younger brothers too became unruly and even ganged up against their teachers. At times Paulaseer and his friends went into the Church and set traps for squirrels, in which Paulaseer was an expert.

Getting into the altar of the Church by anyone other than the ordained priest was considered a sacrilege in these places during those days. And the Church wielded such power over the people, that the priests ruled Supreme. No one could have Independence of thinking. Talking or acting against the Church and its representative, the priest was not tolerated.

One day caught setting the traps in the Church, the boys were bound to the trees and were beaten by the villagers by the orders of the pastor. This incident, early in his childhood, had its adverse effect in his attitude towards Church authority and he tempered his will never to bend to the religious tyranny.

Another gruesome act that impinged deeply into his young mind was the murder of an illegitimate baby perpetrated in one of the Christian homes. Bro. Lawrie recalls this with revulsion even to this day. In another incident in a Church elder’s home he witnessed the black act of witchcraft. The evil spirit that had been commissioned to destroy another family was offered eggs and blood of an animal which it gobbled up.

Having done these satanic deeds to his neighbours, this Church elder and his family were the first to the Church on following Sunday with hypocritical long faces and ‘holier than thou attitude’ towards others of the congregation. No wonder Paulaseer began sinking in the morass of sin (Rom. 1:29-31; Gal. 5:19-21; Col. 3:5-6; I Tim. 6:4-5; II Tim. 3:1-5; Titus 3:3; Rev. 22:15).

SCHOOL DAYS

He did get punishment for his misdeeds. Caning the students was common in those days. Teachers mercilessly thrashed the boys at times just to exercise their authority. Paulaseer came under severe cane blows one day that he told his mother about it. She pleaded for her son and got the
