Context and Rationale

Shane cannot decide and answer simple questions about the details of

patterns in symbols or shapes and neither can Glaiza arrange patterns of

number sequence. Why is this so? One reason is because of very short

span of attention in learning. Another reason is the misconception that this

lesson is passive and, easy-to-acquire. The learners are afraid to be bullied

when they cannot answer. So, specifically designed materials like worksheet

is very important for them to deal with, work independently and overcome the

painful childhood of being bullied.

The effective use of learning technologies and instructional materials

like worksheet can help pupils process knowledge. A worksheet is a tool

designed for the learner to have simple but fun at the same time, ensuring

children grasp concepts quickly and easily. They help children develop

cognitive abilities. Worksheet also helps in achieving the learning objectives

and contains exercises for the learners to work at their own pace. Worksheets

are effective tools in ongoing efforts encouraging our students to engage their

brains during class. Worksheets used in class can also help direct students

learning out of the class.

Making children study for long hours is one of the most difficult tasks

as they have a very short attention span. So, the time kids manage to sit to

study is very precious for parents. Now to make these young minds

understand what they are learning is a very tricky task. Here is where

worksheets play a vital role. Worksheets are a great tool for practicing

exercises, and practice often helps children understand concepts better. (

A students ability to learn mathematics is directly related to his her or

her understanding of mathematical concepts and principles (Cooney 1977).

Experienced teachers know that concepts are the basic building blocks of

1
thinking, particularly higher level thinking in mathematics. This article explores

the concept worksheet, which can help students identify and analyze

important mathematical concepts.

Children develop the skills and mindset for self-learning through the

process of solving problems in the worksheets and gaining the experience of

advancing beyond their school grade level.

Effectiveness of this research depends upon the mathematical

performance of pupils. The higher their achievement , the more effective the

study would be.

The researcher will conduct the study to create more interesting and

enjoyable learning experiences among learners and to develop independence

in determining the missing term in a pattern through the use of worksheets..

It will help pupils identify learning strategies that best improve the level of their

achievement. It will also inspire other teachers use recent learning strategy

and this would propel them to the new curriculum, most applicable to the

schools, teachers and pupils and align with the K to 12 curriculum guide .

The researcher is very interested to improve the pupils achievement

in determining the missing term in a pattern especially to those pupils with

learning difficulties of Grade III pupils in Metodio Elementary School of

Laguiben, Lagangilang, Abra. Hence, the study has to be conducted.

II. Research Questions

This study aims to improve the performance of the Grade III pupils in

determining the missing term in a pattern using worksheets.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the achievement level in determining the missing term/s in a

pattern before using worksheets?

2
2. What is the achievement level in determining the missing term/s in a

pattern after using worksheets?

3. What is the difference of the level of achievement of the Grade III pupils

after the use of worksheets?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

This study will be focused on determining the Grade III pupils performance in

determining the missing term in a pattern. It was delimited to the intact class of Grade

III class of Metodio Elementary School, Laguiben, Lagangilang, Abra for the School

Year 2016 2017. It will be confined to the use of worksheets as a strategy in

teaching Mathematics specifically in determining the missing term in a pattern.

Using Worksheets

Worksheets help learners to engage more thoroughly with specific elements

both in the classroom and at home. These are effective tool in ongoing efforts

encouraging our students to engage their brains during class. They help students

focus on their lesson, They also come to rescue if you as a parent are finding it tough

to maintain your childrens interest in class. These worksheets are simple but fun , At

the same time, ensuring children grasp concepts quickly and easily. They help

children develop cognitive abilities.

The use of worksheets is one of the most effective way in teaching

Mathematics. It focuses on the process of presenting a series of exercises to be

done by the pupils. The results of the study will serve as an instrument in evaluating

the effectiveness of the worksheets in improving the performance of the pupils of

Grade 3 in determining the missing term in a pattern.

3
The teacher should clearly understand the nature of the learner in order to be

more effective in dealings with them and with their problems. The result of this

study, it is hoped that a vivid picture of their nature, needs and aspirations can be

seen and therefore become foundations for good teacher-student relationship.

In particular, the study is important to the following:

Pupils. This study hoped to encourage and tickle minds of students to

communicate their mathematical ideas .It would help them develop and enrich their

skills in determining the missing term/s in a pattern. It will also help them work

independently which they will apply in a lifelong approach.

Teachers. They may find the result of the study helpful in planning and

initiating appropriate worksheets in teaching mathematics at any learning level

inside the classroom and encourage other teachers to upgrade their methods and

techniques in the teaching-learning process.

School Head. The findings of the study will serve as basis to formulate

learning resource development activity that aims to enhance the teaching learning

process

Researcher. The outcome of this study will hopefully serve as valuable

source of data to improve the pupils ability in determining the missing term in a

pattern.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework of the study.

Figure 1 shows that the researcher envisioned that through the use of

worksheets, the pupils will improve their ability in determining the missing term/s in a

pattern. She hoped that by giving the pupils varied learning activities, they will

become more interested in the lesson and will work independently and thus, they

will successfully improve their abilities in determining the missing term/s in a pattern.

IV. Action Research Methods

This action research will use the Single Group a Pretest and a Posttest

Design to determine the effectiveness of the worksheet in improving the pupils

performance in determining the missing term/s in a pattern as shown in Figure 2.

Pretest Worksheets Posttest

Figure 2. The Research Design

In this design, the pupils will be given a pretest. Then, the researcher will

teach them the lesson through the use of worksheets. Finally, posttest will be

administered to them.

b. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

This action research involved the intact class of 26 Grade III pupils of

Metodio Elementary School, School Year 2017 2018. There are 17 boys and 9

girls.

b. Data Gathering Method

A pre- test will be administered to find out the achievement level of the

pupils. The session will be done from December 4,2017 to December 8,2017.After the

use of worksheets ,a post test will be administered to determine the level of

improvement made with respect to their skill determining the missing term in a

pattern. The content of the pre- test is the same with the post test. Their level of

5
performance in determining the missing term in a pattern will be tabulated and

analyzed statistically.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher will prepare the test tools. She will conduct the study for ten

(5) days. On the first day, the pre-test will be administered to the pupils. They are

given an hour to answer the 25-item test based on their Learning Materials in

Mathematics 3.

There will be 3 sets of worksheets to be prepared...The first set of

worksheets will teach students on how to predict the next term or missing term by

looking at the regularity of the shapes or figures repeated. The second set of

worksheets will focus on number patterns or sequencing numbers. The students will

work on how to predict the next number or number/s by looking at the pattern and

discovering the operation used using the four fundamental operations in

mathematics. The third set will be the combination of different shapes/figures and

numbers. All exercises in the worksheets are arrange from simple to complex.

The post test will be administered to the pupils on the last day to determine

whether the worksheet was effective or not in improving the level of achievement of

the Grade 3 pupils in determining the missing term in a pattern.

c. Data Analysis Plan

The following are the norms to be used to analyze data;

For 25 Items Mean percentage Score Descriptive
