Sta. Lucia High School: A School Visit

Visiting a school is one thing, but being able to know more about the schools
comprehensive health program is another thing. At first, I thought that we would be going to a
school to meet with a faculty to tour us around and check and evaluate their health facilities,
but when we got there, it was different from what I was expecting. We were able to have a sit
down interview with the principal of the school, Sir Gilbert Inocencio. I really appreciate all the
information I was able to gather since it was very comprehensive, and he really made sure to
answer all of our questions given that we have a limited amount of time, hes very busy.
Second, I was amazed of how the school looked like physically because coming from a private
school with a very spacious campus, it could pass as one being the physical appearance of the
school a basis. Lastly, I salute Sir Gilbert of how he was able to incorporate and make health a
major concern for the school community.

First, the interview. It was surprising when Sir Gilbert said that he was a Physical
Education Major. At first glance, it seems weird that a PE Major is a high school principal, but
the thing is it served to his advantage because he was able to give attention to an aspect which
is most of the time neglected Health. I think that this served him in a way wherein he was able
to effectively implement the Comprehensive School Health Program (CSHP) specifically the
School Health Instruction, School Health Services, Healthful School Living, and School-
Community Coordination.

For the School Health Instruction, I commend all the efforts done by the principal and
the health department of the school because (1) the curriculum set by the Department of
Education was strictly followed, so in this way, the students are being lectured and updated of
how wide the topics are of health. It not only includes nutrition, but also consumer education,
drug education, basic life saving skills (First-Aid), and the like. Also, there is time allotted (1 hour
per week) for the health class of each section. Its sad that they really dont have a Health major
to teach the class, but what is good is that they give additional training to PE teachers for them
to be qualified to teach health, and there is one teacher per grade level. Health may be a boring
subject for some, but teachers use different strategies like playing games, utilizing technology
(internet, power point presentations, projectors, etc.), lectures and reports, inviting personnel
for first-aid activities, etc. for students to be more receptive in the lessons and discussions.

For the School Health Services, there is a lot of efforts being done, but the interview
made me see that there is really a lack of resources (labor resources) such as a permanent
nurse, nutritionist, doctor, and dentist for the school clinic. Despite the lack of professionals,
they make sure to give everyone first aid training in case something happens and no medical
professional is at site. The school really utilizes its first aiders courtesy of the Red Cross Youth. I
can say that they are really of help in spreading accurate knowledge. Sobrang tiwala ako
because I was part of the Red Cross Youth - Marikina Chapter when I was in high school, and I
can say that training is very much enough for a first aider to know what to do in different
situations. In order add to their knowledge, earthquake drills and fire drills are being
conducted. What surprised me is that they also have a lock down drill wherein they are trained
on how to act/respond if ever there is someone who out of the blue just disrupt the peaceful
day (magwala) or if someone declared a shoot out.

Also, I commend the on-call nurse because he/she still finds time to update the health
records of each student and able to assist in the annual health examination of the students and
faculty. There is only so much a nurse/doctor can accomplish given a large volume of students.
As a result, a regular performance of appraisal procedures such as height and weight
measurement, vision test, scoliosis test, health exam, dental exam is not being accomplished.

Last about the services, I have no doubts in their programs. They have numerous
activities and programs which cater to different areas of health. Some of these are the feeding
program, waste reduction program (War on Waste), Waste Segregation Program, etc. I can see
all the efforts that the school is making in order to attend to all the needs of its constituents.

For the Healthful School Living, this school deserves a round of applause because not
only that it is very spacious and is conducive for learning, but also it is away from unhealthy
temptations like street foods. It is very safe for students to be inside the campus because
theres a guard, the gates are very high, and the structures of the buildings are very well
studied, so thinking like a parent, you would want your child to be safe especially you are not
there to look after him/her. Not only it is safe, but whats more important is that the
environment is clean. There is enough classrooms and toilets for the students to use. Also,
drinking facilities are available, and there are more yet to come. When it comes to food, they
dont sell junk foods to students, and instead the the food service crew makes meals for
students based on the food pyramid. They would have rice, fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, water
instead of chips and soft drinks. Also to my surprise, candies are being sold in a limited amount
only. This practice would not be possible without the continuous efforts of the TLE area and the
City Health Office.

Discipline + Linis = Disciplinis. The school community really makes sure that they are
responsible enough for their own trash, which is a result of the aforementioned
equation/principle. Not only that, but there is a harmonious relationship between the students,
teachers, and administrators through the help of the principal who always finds a compromised
way to benefit all parties.

For the last area, the School-Community Coordination. I am surprised of how involved
the community especially the parents in the school. They have a regular Parent-Teacher
Conference (PTC) in order to update the parents of how their child is doing in school. Also,
there is a community-based Alternative Learning System (ALS) for those who want to study, but
dont have the luxury of time to attend schools regular hours. In cooperation with the
community and non-government organizations, they are able to conduct medical missions
which include vaccination, deworming, and the like annually. Last, but not the least, what I am
most surprised is that they have a State of the School Address (SOSA), which is not likely seen
or done in most schools, but for them it is important for the stakeholders to fully know what is
going on in the school.

From all that I have said, I conclude that CSHP is very much implemented and integrated
in the school curriculum and activities, which I hope that other schools would consider. If there
is one thing that I would like to bring from this school visit to my life is that it is very important
to be accountable for all of your actions. You have been given a responsibility, and it is assigned
to you because that certain person believes in your abilities, and the only thing you can do to
give back the trust that person gave you is to do your job extraordinarily well and be
accountable for whatever might the results of your actions be.
