INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL. How will you introduce the knowledge and/or skills of the lesson?
What will your students be doing to process this information?
A helping verb is a verb that helps the main verb express action or a state of being.
A verb phrase contains one main verb and one or more helping verbs. Yes, there may be more than
one! P. 95
Some of the linking verbs (the forms of be) are also helping verbs. Sometimes they are simply the
main verb.
Sometimes a verb phrase is interrupted by another part of speech. P.96
We find verb phrases by looking for helping verbs and main verbs.
o Think Aloud:
1st example
I write see sentence Bobby is going to the store.
I think to myself, Im getting pretty good at spotting verbs nowtheyre actions or
state of being. But it looks like I might have two here.
I see that Bobby is a noun, and I know that go is an actionso that must be a verb.
But why is there another is there? Maybe Ill look at my chart on p.96 to see if is is
a helping verb.
P.96 says that it is! That must mean this is a verb phrase!
What Im going to do, then, is to circle the whole verb phrase because its just one
verb. Then, Im going to underline the helping verb. That must mean that going is
the main verb!
2nd exampleform of be is main verb
That one was pretty easy, but what happens when the main verb becomes a linking
I Do
verbbut it also looks like a helping verb? I am seeing the sentence He might have
been the best in his class.
Im looking at what I think are all verbsmight, have, and beenbut Im a really not
sure which one is the verb. Maybe the whole thing is the verb phrase.
But if thats the case, then where is the main verb??? Maybe its best. But I know
that best is a word that can describe someone or something, so that must be an
adjective.
You know, I remember learning yesterday that be can be a verb on its own! Thats
called a linking verb. So that must mean it can also be a main verb!
So, I cant circle best or the because they are adjectivesso I must have to circle
might have been
But then.what do I underline? What is the helping verb? Well, been is the main
verbso that must mean might is a helping verb. What about have? Oh, I
rememberI can have more than one helping verb! So, I underline might have!
3rd examplethe interrupter
Example: I can always try harder!
Well, I know that try is an action because I try all the time. And I just learned that
can is a helping verbso I want to circle can always try.
But waitI cant do alwaysand its not a linking verb. And p.96 does not say that
always is a helping verb. What do I do with always???
Wait! Sometimes helping verbs get interrupted. Always tells me how much
something can happenso I need to circle just can and try.
We learned this because the verb is the ONLY absolutely required word to make a complete sentence.
o Examples: Stop! and Freeze!

I will Cold Call each group to then share their answers with the class and then process about the answers, if
necessary.
