The data in Table 4.4 shows the distribution of the respondents by occupation, of the 150
individuals surveyed from the Agency for Mass Literacy, Maiduguri for the study. 30% were
farmers, 16.7% Civil servants, 42.7 traders and 10.7% were craftsmen. This shows that majority
of those studying at agency are traders who want to learn and improve their educational level.

Table 4.5 shows whether occupation of the respondents have significant impact on the rate of
missing classes by the respondents. The distribution shows that between 70 and 80% of the
respondents from the different occupations have missed class once or twice per week. Being absent
for to three times a week is minimal across all the professions with 19.3% being consistent in
attendance. The chi-square tests result shown in Table 4.6 indicate that 92 = 11.182 with =
0.263 shows that there is no significant difference, that is missing classes does not depend on the
occupation of the respondents.

The distribution of house type the respondents stay in as shown in Table 4.14 indicate that 26% of
the respondents lives in thatched houses. 47.3% lives in hoses built and roofed with ordinary zinc
sheets, 16.7 % lives in concrete houses while only 10% of the respondents lives in modern houses.
