reading and writing. Students are expected to:
(E) use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the
meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words.
Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to define synonym and antonym.
Students will be able to identify synonyms and antonyms in text.
Students will be able to use a thesaurus.
Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of synonyms and antonyms in active
learning.
Students will be able to replace given words with synonyms.
Materials: Synonym/Antonym Index Cards, Dry Erase Boards, Dry Erase Markers, Popular
Nursery Rhymes and/or Chorus to Popular Songs typed and printed on cardstock paper,
Thesaurus for each student
Introduction: Students will draw a word from box A (on white index card) and a word from box
B (on orange index card) when they enter the classroom. Once class begins, teacher will give
explanation. Using the word from box A (white index card), students will be instructed to
mingle throughout the classroom to find the person with the synonym for their word. Students
will work until completed. Teacher will ensure students found their correct match. Then, with
their synonym partner, students will create an original sentence that can be used with either
word and write it on their dry erase board. Students will share their two synonym words with
the class and show/read their original sentence. Then students will use their word from box B
(orange index card) and find the person with the antonym for their word. Repeat the same
tasks for antonyms. *Teacher must have the correct number or words prepared for each class.
Instructional Activities and Procedures:
Lecture Teacher will discuss that learning synonyms and antonyms is useful in reading and
writing because it helps with reading comprehension and it enables students to use a wider
variety of vocabulary in their writing.
Activity Students will work in pairs. Each pair will be given a nursery rhyme or chorus to a
popular song. Students will be instructed not to share they nursery rhyme or song with other
students. Partners will use a thesaurus to replace as many words as possible in their nursery
rhyme/song. Students can be given multiple nursery rhymes/songs if time permits. Students
will have approximately 15 minutes to rewrite their nursery rhyme/song. Once time is up,
students will then share their new version of the nursery rhyme/song with the class. Students
will try to correctly identify the original nursery rhyme/song. Repeat until all pairs have gone.
Modifications/Differentiated Instruction:
Early finishers in the introduction activity should list as many synonyms and antonyms they can
think of for their word(s).
Provide struggling learners with pictures for each word to help with understanding.
Evaluation: Exit Ticket Students will be asked to write down their own definitions of synonym
and antonym and give a synonym and antonym for the following words: 1) LOVE 2) PAINFUL 3)
BIG 4) ANGRY 5) LAUGH.
Closure: Review definitions of synonym and antonym
